Abstract:
This article outlines recent events concerning the conservation and management trajectory of a highly migratory shark species, the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus), in the North Atlantic, where it has been routinely captured recreationally and as part of commercial fishing operations alongside other species. Noting recent warnings concerning the high mortality of the species in this ocean region, and the threat of imminent population collapse, this article sets out a number of applicable law of the sea provisions, and carries out an evaluation of relevant measures for target and incidental capture species, discussing their applicability to the mako fishery. It also presents an analysis of regional and global governance actions taken to date by the international community and by individual actors, noting a number of shortfalls, and outlining potential responses.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the multiple dilemmas faced by feminist activists in the process of choosing between engaging or not in UN institutional agendas. These dilemmas include risking cooptation by the very processes they seek to oppose, possibly legitimating them; or contesting and offering resistance to these processes. The case upon which the analysis is carried is the Financing for Development (FfD) process, which culminated in the Monterrey Consensus in 2002. Despite the (foretold) perspectives of frustration, many Transnational Feminist Movements (TFMs) decided to stay in the process until the end, by articulating a politics of engagement and resistance (which they call an inside/outside strategy). The strategy calls for critically participating in official discussions and, at the same time, contesting the invisibility of how gender structures the current intellectual and practical development project. To conclude, two hypotheses are raised regarding this decision to engage. According to the first, this counter-intuitive decision is a result of two factors: the perception of the UN as a vital space of engagement; and the importance of carrying out contentious politics as part of a larger process. The second hypothesis understands this decision as pervaded by logics of power internal to the TFMs, who seek to maintain the institutional spaces they have struggled to acquire since the UN Decade for Women. The conclusion points to the dilemmatic nature of this strategy.

This dissertation approaches the similarities and incongruities among the art of registering the instants through the picture and the art of Rubem Braga in writing his chronicles. Starting from the reading of the book Casa dos Braga: memory of childhood, of Rubem Braga (1913-1990), published in 1997, it is attempted to evidence in that work the fragmentary character, the characters and landscapes cutting, the reduced dimensions of the gathered texts and the documentary tendency of that collection of childhood chronicles that drive the reader to surprise the tangency and the contamination of the operations of memorialist writing by the processes of the photographic device, here considered as much as metaphor of the permanence of the mnemonic residues in the psychic apparel, as much as symptom that gathers the picture and the écritures de soi in the same "indecisive tension" between the testimonial registration of the past and the several irruptions from the imaginary and from the fiction. It is sought, also, to demonstrate, in the reading of the Casa dos Braga, the seductive and enigmatic impression of finding before an album of pictures. In the same way that a collection of family pictures arrests us and it interrogates us quietly, the textual substance of Rubem Braga's chronicles, while fixation way and accumulation of fugitive instants, works in the reader similar practices to those of the "amateur" of pictures, because there also fragments and cuttings are to demand of the glance and of the imagination movements and digressions that allow to complement the space and to unite multiple stations of the time. There changed in immobile types, the textualized memory mobilizes us to vivify what is dead, as in the paradox in that the picture is said: "eternization of the instant". Finally, it is intended to emphasize the importance of the space of the house of childhood in relation to the writer's literary space and to discuss the pertinence of the analogy between the "picture album" and the referred work, correlating the literature with the semiotics practice of the picture.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Colombian writer who won uncountable awards in his life. He is a master of magical realism, his masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude” had been known all over the world. In 1981, he published a novel “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” which is based on a true story. The plot of the novel is very complicate, therefore got the high praise from wide readership. The Italian director Francesco Rosi, who is good at produce realism film, directed the cinematography adaptation of “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. After the broadcast, several sources have criticized the movie saying that is not as good as the original novel, which has an excellent content and rigorous structure. The thesis mainly focus on the narrative elements and art of this film and tries to apply the narrative theory of Gerard Genette and Seymour Chatman to analyze the differences between the novel and the film''s content and structure. The methodology of this thesis is based on the textual analysis. We will analyze and explore the artistic value through narrative perspectives in the case of the novel “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” and the homonym movie. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of the novel and the film narrative theory. The second chapter deals with the introduction of Marquez’s life, main works and his writing style. The third chapter is about the meaning and the artistic value in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”, including plot genre, characters, theme and time. The last chapter introduce the director Rosi’s life, then analyze the form of structure and narrative element in the novel and the movie by narrative theory, which contained characters, time and space, focalization and plot genre, to explain why the director arranged the different elements in the film. It is used the methodology of textual analysis and the application of narrative theory to compare the structure of the novel and the movie and analyze the process of the adaptation which enables to demonstrate the artistic value of this cinematography adaptation.

"Inheriting man's estate : constructions of masculinity in selected popular narrative." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1913.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the violence of patriarchal culture as it is staged in three twentieth century texts: the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), the South African novelist Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples (1993) and the American film Night of the Hunter (1954) directed by Charles Laughton. Each of these works focuses on the induction of the boy child into culture and the trauma attendant on this process of accession. The thesis is that if culture is violent then it must follow that damage is done to the developing subject in the process of its construction by the cultural forces that shape masculinity. The theoretical grounding of the analysis is derived from two main sources: Jacques Derrida's account of the violence of culture in Of Grammatology (1976) and the analysis of patriarchy and the Oedipal development of the boy child into manhood found in the work of Freud and Lacan. Derrida is used for his thinking on the inherently violent nature of culture and the way in which cultural discourse is structured through binary dualisms. The three chosen works all critique and dismantle binarist thinking as a move towards imagining a less destructive discursive order. The Oedipal narrative, as a myth which describes and explains the forces shaping the male child in the process of acculturation, exemplifies and illustrates cultural violence: As expounded by Freud and Lacan, the Oedipal myth is one which underpins all three of the chosen works. Derrida, Freud and Lacan have been very usefully mediated by several cultural critics and therefore extensive use is made of commentaries by Kaja Silverman, Frank Krutnik and Madan Sarup. Slavoj Zizek's interpretations of Lacan have also yielded much that is interesting about the nature of the Law of the Father and consequently reference is made to his ideas, principally in Chapter Four.
