Abstract:
The main intention of the PhD project was to create a varve chronology for the Suigetsu Varves 2006' (SG06) composite profile from Lake Suigetsu (Japan) by thin section microscopy. The chronology was not only to provide an age-scale for the various palaeo-environmental proxies analysed within the SG06 project, but also and foremost to contribute, in combination with the SG06 14C chronology, to the international atmospheric radiocarbon calibration curve (IntCal). The SG06 14C data are based on terrestrial leaf fossils and therefore record atmospheric 14C values directly, avoiding the correction

Doctor of Philosophy
Department of Geography
John A. Harrington, Jr.
Clearly, the character of the relationship between humans and their environment has changed over time. Scholars have developed a geologic timeline and a timeline for life, but there is not a human-environment timeline. The proposed new geologic epoch of the Anthropocene is inadequate for encapsulating the diversity of the human-environment relationship throughout history and prehistory. This dissertation initiates conversation about developing an official human-environment timeline. Oriented from the perspective

Abstract:
The search for a ‘historical Moses’ is one which has been debated for several centuries. In spite of copious archaeological finds in Egypt and other parts of the ancient Near East, no material remains have been found to substantiate the Exodus story. Mythological stories from the ancient Near East bear striking similarities to the Moses narrative found in the Hebrew Bible. The inconsistencies found in the Hebrew Bible further hamper the attempt to find a historical Moses, instead Moses is found only in tradition. Taking these issues into consideration, other possibilities need to be investigat

Abstract Commercial quasi-binary Ni-Mo alloys containing molybdenum as the primary alloying element between 26 % and 30% have been widely used in many chemical processes since the late 1920's. The first major alloy of this family, Alloy B (UNS # N10001), was developed to be resistant to hydrochloric acid and was used in many applications such as in the distillation, condensation, and handling of this and other reducing acids such as sulfuric acid under 60% concentration. Many processes existed where use of catalysts like aluminum chloride led to HCl formation by hydrolysis thus requiring use o
