The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of filamentous fungi isolated from petroleum-contaminated soils to oxidize chrysene. Only 4 of the 17 isolates known to oxidize pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene were found to produce polar products when incubated in the presence of chrysene and Tween 80: Penicillium janthinellum, Syncephalastrum racemosum, and 2 Penicillium spp. Trows-1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydrochrysene was identified by 1H-NMR as one of three fungal metabolites. A range of small molecules of interest for use in organic semiconductor devices were studied computationally. Trends in geometry, absorption spectra, molecular orbitals, electrostatic potentials, reorganisation energies were studied. Results suggest that, as with acenes, the performance of non-linear cata-condensed polyaromatic hydrocarbons improves as number of fused benzene rings increases. The m41 element of the matrix, which is related to the circular polarization behaviour, is analysed. Light reflected from the scarab beetles Cetonia aurata (C. aurata) and Chrysina gloriosa (C. gloriosa) has left-handed polarization. In this work the polarizing properties and structural characteristics of the cuticles of these two beetles are investigated with two different techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Mueller-matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry (MMSE). As enzymatic repair of damaged DNA is very body specific, body burden and fundamental studies of chemical carcinogenesis require the development of new bioanalytical techniques which can directly determine damage of intact DNA from carcinogenic matabolites. Assessment of damage at a level of ~1:109 base pairs is required for ~10-100 μg of DNA.
