Abstract:
Since the 1991 discovery of hollow cylindrical carbon-based unidimensional structures, the nanotubular form of matter has been thoroughly investigated leading to a wealth of literature. Their particular features are not limited to graphite but are common in many inorganic highly anisotropic two-dimensional layered compounds. The first non-mineral inorganic nanotubes, constituted of lamellar molybdenum and tungsten disulfides, were synthesized in 1992. Afterwards, a large number of inorganic nanotubes have been synthesized, opening the path to the development of nanoelectronics, due to their di

Nanowires were produced by injection of molten Hg and Pb into chrysotile nanotubes. The breakdown of chrysotile and the surface tension of the molten metals are the limiting factors for the filling procedure. The thermal stability of chrysotile nanotubes was investigated by infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, and x-ray diffraction analyses. For short-term thermal annealing (30 min) the tube morphology remains stable up to 700 °C. The high surface tension of both molten Pb and Hg (γLV > 200 mN/m) requires external pressure for the melts to penetrate into t

In a neutral environment, Chrysotile nanotubes have been synthesized by hydrothermal method, with MgO and SiO2powder as the starting materials. X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) are used to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of the as-prepared samples. We found that the diameter of Chrysotile is uniform. Their outer diameter is about 30~50 nm and the inner diameter is about 6~8 nm. The length of them is a few hundred nanometers. The XRD analysis indicates that the as-prepared Chrysotile is a Rhombohedral structures.

This research is aimed at obtaining boron-containing nanotubular chrysotile fibers with increased neutron absorption capacity. The possibility of using an organosilicon modifier based on tetraethoxysilane to increase the hydrothermal stability of chrysotile, as well as the strength of nanoreinforced composites based on a cement binder is considered. The mechanisms for the synthesis of heat-resistant nanotubular fibers of the composition Mg6(OH)8SiB4O10, which have a chrysotile structure, have been established. The nanoMgO and active nanoSiO2 were prepared by the special liquid-phase precipitation method. Subsequently, Chrysotile nanotube was prepared of by hydrothermal method using the nanoMgO and active nanoSiO2 as precursors at 220°C under 23atm in basic solution. The surface topographies and composition of the Chrysotile nanotube were characterized by XRD and TEM. Then, the dispersive property of particles modified by oleic acid was analyzed by IR. AbstractFrom a few examples, the first part of this paper discusses the use of transmission electron microscopy in characterizing arrested silicate reaction mechanisms in coherent rocks, including nucleation, crystal growth, and resorption events. Some attention is given to the role of reaction sites and strain. The second part of the paper addresses the wealth of mutual arrangement of serpentine tubules (chrysotilesl) found recently in serpentinite cracks, the result of hydration reactions. It is suggested that their great flexibility of association as fascinating mesostructures may indicate
