Abstract:

Abstract:
Chunks and Tasks is a programming model based on the C ++ programming language. This programming model is used for electronic structure calculations, among other things. The purpose of this project is to improve the CHT-MPI software library for Chunks and tasks, so that calculations of matrix-matrix multiplications are performed more efficiently than they do with the existing software library. The software library is based on the work stealing method, which is a method the software library for Chunks and Tasks uses for the distribution of the calculation work. The considered way to improve the software library is by modifying the work stealing method in a way that makes the distribution of calculation work happen in a more efficient way , which will lead to calculations performed faster than before. Two different modifications of the work stealing method were tested and it led to two new methods, Method 1 and Method 2, which distributed the calculation work differently. Method 1 did not give results that were compatible with the theory, since the calculation time with this method was much longer than the previous method.  The results for method 2 were compatible with the theory for the method. Method 2 distributed the calculation work more efficiently than before which decreased the amount of data sent during the calculations, which led to a shorter calculation time than with the previous method.  This method made an improvement of the software library for the programming model Chunks and Tasks.

Abstract:
Programming efficiently in extremely high thread count environments can be both challenging and tedious for the modern programmer. Task based programming models provide an abstraction of the low--level system details by instead allowing a program to be expressed as a set of tasks to executed by the system. However, these abstractions often have an associated performance overhead that can cut into the benefits of running with many threads. The Chunks and Tasks programming model is one such task based abstraction model. The Chunks and Tasks CHT-MPI C++ library, developed at Uppsala University, follows this programming model. The CHT-MPI library works by first spawning a set of worker processes. Tasks are then assigned to the workers in a dynamic fashion so that those who complete their tasks faster than others are automatically assigned additional tasks. This is done to help with load balancing across the system. Workers may also steal tasks from each other. Each worker process may have many threads. In this thesis, the CHT--MPI library is modified to reduce inter-thread communication within individual worker processes. Currently, each worker process has a single master list of all tasks to be executed by that worker. This list is shared between all threads within a single worker. This list sharing can create a performance bottleneck when the tasks are relatively short and the list is being modified often. Adding support to the library for thread-local task trees reduces the number of times that threads must synchronize with the master list. With this new feature, a worker process with twenty threads that was assigned a set of highly granular tasks can see a two times boost in performance when compared to the old version of the library. This level of performance improvement was observed for dense matrix-matrix multiplication and integration benchmarks. This is an important result as being able to effectively scale programs of a fixed problem size across an ever increasing number of threads necessitates being able to efficiently execute them in smaller and smaller parts.

Abstract:
Microbial diversity is generally considered for his role in key ecosystem processes, such as decomposition of organic matter and biogeochemical cycles. However, information about the impact of diversity on minor functions, such as degradation of xenobiotics is scant. We study from the approach of \'dilution to extinction\', the role of diversity on the capacity of microbial community to degrade the chlorothalonil (organochlorine). We also studied the behavior of bacterial community after applying the pesticide in the soil with and without biochar. Microbial diversity of the soil natural (control) was artificially altered by dilution, forming a gradient of diversity (SN > 10-1 > 10-3 > 10-6), followed by inoculation in sterile soil samples and subsequent restructuring (15 days). After of the community restructuring, the samples were handled with biochar (1% w/w) and treated with the chlorothalonil field dose. The behavior of the bacterial community was studied by PCR-DGGE and qPCR of the 16S rDNA gene through an experiment with cold molecule (no radiolabeled). While the CHT degradation capacity was studied by radiorespirometry (14C-CHT). Initially, the community of bacteria was influenced by the diversity gradient obtained by dilution. The separation of bacterial groups showed very similar in the first three pre-application periods of the CHT (SN > 10-1 - 10-3 > 10-6). While in the period of 15 days, the group dynamic has changed (SN > 10-1 > 10-3 e 10-6). During periods of 21 and 42 days, the profile bacterial community showed strong modification. The bacterial groups were more dispersed when only considered the CHT. Although, the ANOSIM analysis indicated no difference in samples with and without biochar, suggesting that chlorothalonil who has contributed the most in the dispersion of bacterial groups. In the period of 42 days, the community presented a positive response, being observed increases in the number of bands and Shannon-Weiner index in all treatments. This possibly due to less concentration of fungicide available in soil solution, thus reducing, the deleterious effects on the community. The qPCR dates showed no change in the number of copies of the 16S rDNA gene in all treatments. The removal of microbial strongly impacted the ability of the bacterial community to degrading chlorothalonil. Despite the ability to degrade not having been lost, the minimum change in diversity promoted high reduction in the rate of mineralization CHT. The dissipation of the CHT showed quick (D50 < 1 d) in all treatments, in addition, the formation of non-extractable 14C-residues was one of the main mechanisms of dissipation of the CHT. From the degradation of chlorothalonil, three metabolites were detected. We conclude that modification by dilution of the bacterial diversity had a negative impact on the mineralization of chlorothalonil. And the formation of non-extractable residues consisted in the main CHT dissipation mechanism in both soils.

Abstract:
This master thesis project consisted of three parts that all were performed through CFD simulations with the purpose to develop Scania's methods in the subject of CFD. All parts included simulations on Scania's SC92T70 centrifugal compressor. Part one consisted of performing a mesh study for the purpose of reliability, to investigate the convergence of different parameters by refining the boundary layer. The method used is an inflation option called First layer thickness. Five different meshes were generated where the Richardson extrapolation method was used to examine the parameters between the mesh renements. From the result from the examined parameters, an approximate relative error could be calculated to be less than 0.52 %, and a numerical uncertainty of less than 0.35 %, between Mesh3 and Mesh4. In addition to that, Mesh3 had a simulation time of one hour less than for Mesh4. These results motivated the use of mesh3 to be refined enough for further work in this thesis project. This mesh ended at 37, 915, 257 number of elements. The second part consisted of performing steady state CFD simulations, to examine different parameters in order to find indications of the phenomena surge. Here, experimental data was used as reliance to perform CFD simulations on the compressor. Design points from experimental data was used, that ranged from low mass flow rates where surge arises, to high mass flow rates where another phenomena called choke occur. Except for the design points taken from experimental data, a few extra design points where included at low mass flow rates (in the region of surge). The goal was that the analysis of the different parameters would generate fluctuations on the result for the design points in surge region. Four different rotational speeds on the compressor were examined, 56k, 69k, 87k and 110k revolutions per minute. A total of 140 different parameters were examined, where 10 of these indicated on surge. All of these parameters that indicated on surge where found in regions of vicinity to the compressor wheel, which are the regions subjected to the phenomena. The parameters indicating on surge where mass flow, pressure coefficient, static pressure and temperature. Indications where found at the wheel inlet, ported shroud, and wheel outlet interfaces. The indications were only found for the two lower rotational speeds of the compressor wheel. To capture the behaviour on higher rotational speeds, more design points in the region of surge are needed, or transient simulations. Part three of the thesis project consisted of investigating the methodology of performing a Conjugate Heat Transfer model (CHT) with the CFD code CFX. This part has not been performed by Scania before, so a big part of the problem was to investigate if it actually was achievable. The goal was to use this model to calculate the heat transfer between fluid and solid parts, as well as between the solid parts and the ambient. One question Scania wanted to answer was if the CHT model could generate aerodynamic performance that corresponds to Scania's traditional adiabatic model, as well as to experimental data of the compressor. In this part, both solid and fluid domains were included in the geometryto calculate heat transport, in contrast to the traditional adiabatic model that only uses the fluid domains. Because of that, a big part of the work consisted of defining all interfaces connecting together surfaces between all domains. This is needed to model heat transport between the domains. In the set up part in CFX, the CHT model differed a lot from the traditional adiabatic model in that way that the outer walls was not set up as adiabatic anymore. In the CHT model, instead heat transfer is allowed between the outer walls of the fluids and the solids. From the result simulations, one could see that the CHT model was able to compute the heat transfer between fluids and solids. It also managed to export thermal data such as heat flux and wall heat transfer coefficient to be used for mechanical analysis, which is an important part in Scania's work. From the analysis of aerodynamic performance, a conclusion was drawn that the CHT model was able to compute efficiency and pressure ratio that followed the behaviour ofthe traditional adiabatic model as well as experimental data. However, for lowermass flows, the CHT model started to underpredict which could be explained by the geometrical differences between the CHT and adiabatic model. By analysis of temperature, one could see quantitative differences compared to the traditional adiabatic model. For other parameters (static and total pressure), there were no experimental data to be used for comparison. Because of that, an important part in future work of this CHT method development is to perform more experimental test for CFD data to be compared against. Another important part to compare the models is to have an identical geometry. Without an identical geometry, deviations in result will occur that depends on geometry.

Abstract:
An accurate measurement of total temperature in turbomachinery flows remains critical for component life models and cycle performance optimization. While many techniques exist to measure these flows, immersed thermocouple based probes remain highly desirable due to well established practices for probe design and implementation in typical industrial flow applications. However, as engine manufacturers continue to push towards higher maximum cycle temperatures and smaller flow passages, the continued use of these probes requires new probe designs considering both improved sensor durability and measurement accuracy. Increased maximum temperatures introduce many challenges for total temperature measurements using conventional immersed probes, including increased influences of conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer between the sensor, fluid and the surroundings due to large thermal gradients present in real turbomachinery systems. While these effects have been previously investigated, the available design models are very limited to specific geometries and flow conditions. In this Dissertation, a more fundamental understanding of the flow behavior around typical vented shield style total temperature probes as a function of probe geometry and operating condition is gained using results from high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations with Conjugate Heat Transfer. A parametric study was conducted considering three non-dimensional probe geometric ratios (vent location to shield length (0.029-0.806), sensor diameter to shield inner diameter (0.252-0.672), and shield outer diameter to strut/mount thickness (0.245-0.759)) and three operating conditions (total temperature (70, 850, 2500°F) and pressure (1, 1, 10 atm), respectively) at a moderate Mach number of 0.4. Results were further quantified in the form of new empirical correlations necessary for rapid thermal performance evaluations of current and future probe designs. Additionally, a new mixed-fidelity or Reduced Order Modeling technique was developed which allows the coupling of high fidelity surface heat transfer data from CFD with a generalized form of the 1-D conducting solid equations for evaluating radiation and transient influences on sensor performance. These new flow and heat transfer correlations together with the new Reduced Order Modeling technique developed here greatly enhance the capabilities of designers to evaluate performance of current and future probe designs, with higher accuracy and with significant reductions in computational resources.

Abstract:
EDF operates a large number of electrical rotating machines in its electricity generation capacity. Thermal stresses which affect them can cause local heating, sufficient to damage their integrity. The present work contributes to provide methodologies for detecting hot spots in these machines, better understanding the topology of rotating flows and identifying their effects on heat transfer. Several experimental scale model were used by increasing their complexity to understand and validate the numerical simulations. A first study on a turbulent wall jet over a non-confined backward-facing step (half-pole hydrogenerator) notes significant differences compared to results from confined case : both of them are present in an hydrogenerator. A second study was done on a small confined rotating scale model to determinate the effects of a Taylor-Couette-Poiseuille on temperature distribution and position of hot spots on the heated rotor, by studying the overall flow regimes flow. These studies have helped to obtain a reliable method based on conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations. Another method, based on FEM coupled with the use of an inverse method, has been studied on a large model of hydraulic generator so as to solve the computation time issue of the first methodology. It numerically calculates the convective heat transfer from temperature measurements, but depends on the availability of experimental data. This work has also developped new no-contact measurement techniques as the use of a high-frequency pyrometer which can be applied on rotating machines for monitoring temperature

This master thesis was provided by Scania AB. The objective of this thesis was to modify an application in the free Computational Fluid Dynamics software OpenFOAM to be able to handle spray and wall film modeling of a Urea Water Solution together with Conjugate Heat Transfer. The basic purpose is to widen the knowledge of the vaporization process of a Urea Water Solution in the exhaust gas after treatment system for a diesel engine by using OpenFOAM. First, urea has been modeled as a very viscous liquid at low temperature to mimic the solidication process of urea. Second, the development of the new application has been done. At last, test simulations of a simple test case are performed with the new application. The results are then compared with simplied hand calculations to verify a correct behavior of certain exposed source terms. The new application is working properly for the test case but to ensure the reliability, the results need to be compared with another Computational Fluid Dynamics software or more preferable, real experiments. For more advanced geometries, the continued development presented last in this thesis is highly recommended to follow.

Abstract:
Ceramic Hydroxyapatite (CHT), with empirical formula (Ca5(PO4)3OH)2, is a material used as ion exchange resin in chromatographic applications. The material, having both positive and negative charged sites, can be used in many different contexts encountered in the protein purification processes. Nevertheless, the resin shows an intrinsic limitation for this kind of applications: even if the material solubility in water is very low at pH values higher than 6.5, it sharply increases in more acidic environments, reducing the life of the material and increasing the operative costs of the process, making problematic the CHT application at these conditions. There is a further complication related to the CHT application: it is experimentally reported that the result of the resin interactions with salts is a pH transient occurring in the liquid phase of the chromatographic column. These pH variations are temporary but remarkable, they may influence in an important manner the material solubility, affecting the number of utilization cycle of the fixed bed and, eventually, the stability of the proteins involved in the separation process. In this work the principal aspects contributing at the selection of the operating pH and of the buffering specie are analyzed, discussing also the effect of the buffer itself on the material solubility. Then, it is reported a mathematical model useful for the description of the dynamic behavior of the column and it is proposed an interaction mechanism between the salts of the mobile phase and the stationary phase. In particular, it is emphasized the discussion regarding the different affinity shown by the stationary phase for the different counter-ions which may accompanies the buffering specie. Finally, a series of equations are developed at the scope to obtain a model useful to describe the observed pH transients.

Abstract:
This work deals with the solution of coupled aerothermal problems. The aim of the work is to improve the accuracy and robustness of the coupling techniques. The stability of the aerothermal coupling for steady state problems is first studied (weak coupling). A numerical Biot number is defined, which allows to evaluate the intensity of the fluid-structure thermal interaction. Several methods (Dirichlet-Robin, Neumann-Robin and Robin-Robin) are studied and their ranges of validity are defined. The Dirichlet-Robin method with a safety coefficient, which presents the easiest implementation, proves to be the most robust. Taking radiation into account implies a major destabilization of the aerothermal problem. Thus, the stabilization method is modified in order to be able to stabilize this type of calculation. In the second part, the solution of coupled aerothermal problems in the transient regime is studied using the quasidynamic partitioned algorithm. This is an iterative procedure (strong coupling) between the thermal problem in the solid solved in the transient regime and the flow field at the steady state, thus ensuring equal heat flux and temperature at each coupling time. The accuracy of this algorithm is analysed and improved. Finally, the quasi-dynamic algorithm is analysed on quasi-industrial aerothermal problems of aeronautical compressor and turbine discs

Abstract:
Music Education
M.M.
One of the most distinctive musical genres that originated in Cuba over the last century has been Cha-Cha-Chá, which was created by Enrique Jorrín in the 1950s. The popularity of this music has grown considerably since its genesis, evidenced by the vast array of repertoire associated with the style of music, the multitude of bands performing it and its prevalence in popular culture. The music has traveled the world via aural transmission; advances in technology have helped to disseminate Cha-Cha-Chá and have contributed to its prevalence. Very little research—particularly research written in the English language—exists on this genre and its creator. Due to its musical significance and social impact, it is important to understand Cha-Cha-Chá’s place in modern Cuba and how it has been preserved over time. The purpose of this study is to discuss Enrique Jorrín’s influence on the creation and performance of Cha-Cha-Chá, and to discuss the importance of Cha-Cha-Chá in American music education.

Abstract:
This work is part of a research project that aims to synthesize and characterize new organic-inorganic hybrid materials that can be used in the manufacture of photovoltaic cells, but with less polluting elements than the compounds currently proposed. For this we have developed and studied two new compounds based on tin : bis tetramethylammonium hexabromostannate ([N(CH₃)₄]₂SnBr₆), and bis-tetraethylammonium hexabromostannate ([CH₃-CH₂]₄SnBr₆). The experimental studies are based on thermal measurements (ATD, DSC, ATG), energy dispersion spectrometry (EDX), powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectrometries (infrared and Raman), complex impedance spectrometry, and UV-Visible spectrometry. It appeared that [N(CH₃)₄]₂SnBr₆ is of cubic symmetry of the K₂PtCl₆ type. It consists of unconnected SnBr₆²- octahedra, separated by tetramethylammoniums, which can be considered to be derived from a perovskite structure in which half of the sites of octahedral symmetry are occupied by SnBr₆²- and half by vacancies (perovskite structure 0D). This arrangement thus leaves very large volumes free of any atom, and we have even shown that it has infinite open channels of large section (0,5 nm in diameter) ; it can thus be considered as a porous material. The vibrational analyzes coupled with ab-initio calculations on the SnBr₆²- octahedron and the tetramethylammonium ion (TMA+) made it possible to unambiguously explain the spectra and to conclude to the existence of local disorder. Infrared, Raman and EDX signals also suggest the presence of OH- or water, probably related to the porous structure. It has been shown that the compound undergoes a reversible phase transition at a higher temperature (around 100°C). Vibrational studies confirm the phase transition, as do studies of dielectric properties. The gap (2,31 eV) is close to the width of the 2,7 eV forbidden band of the Cs₂SnBr₆ semiconductor used in solar cells.Bis-tetraethylammonium hexabromostannate [CH₃-CH₂]₄SnBr₆ at room temperature exhibits a (rhombohedral) structure also composed of non-connected SnBr₆²- octahedra, but of compact structural arrangement, unlike the compound with TMA. Its temperature study reveals two reversible transitions but with strong hysteresis at 262K / 239K and at 362K / 307K (heating / cooling). Its gap energy is equal to 2,51 eV

This research aims to analyze the social logics that operate in the functioning and performance of 'Traditionalism Gaucho' in Rio Grande do Sul and that can explain, with more or less consistency, significant projection that he acquired in this state even putting up as movement called "traditionalist" in the XXI century. We believe its projection can be explained, at least reasonably, from two different angles of analysis, namely, first, by investigating those properties or characteristics assumed by movement so it could be spread throughout the Rio Grande South (say acquire large membership) even under the condition of enormous ethnic and cultural diversity that the state has gaucho, and second, by investigating those properties that explain the temporal continuity that the Movement has shown, extending to the nowadays, while there were significant contextual changes of economic and social order since its founding until the present time. From these two dimensions we believe we can cover reasonable sociological properties of performance and functioning of traditionalism that explain the considerable projection that he acquired in Rio Grande do Sul.

Abstract:
Neurodegenerative diseases are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the ageing population, and are among the major contributors to disability and disease worldwide. The identification of the gene defects responsible for many of these conditions has played a major role in our understanding of the pathogenic processes involved, and provided opportunity to develop targeted treatment strategies. Cholinergic neurotransmission supports a wide range of physiological and behavioural processes and its dysfunction of cholinergic signalling has been associated with a number of disorders, including myasthenias, cardiovascular disease(1), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (2), Alzheimer’s disease (ADi), schizophrenia, addiction(3), and depression(4). SLC5A7 encodes the Na+/Cl- dependent, high-affinity choline transporter (CHT) which represents the rate limiting step in acetylcholine (Ach) synthesis and is critical for normal cholinergic signalling. The work in this thesis details two new inherited disorders, caused by distinct pathogenic disease mechanisms, associated with novel SLC5A7 mutations. Chapter three documents the discovery of two autosomal-dominantly acting SLC5A7/CHT mutations associated with adult onset motor neurone disorders. Initially we identified a frameshift mutation that results in premature truncation of the transporter protein in a large Welsh kindred affected with distal hereditary motor neuropathy type VII (dHMN-VII), in which neurodegeneration and muscle paresis is largely restricted to the distal limb muscles and vocal cords. The mutation responsible results in the dominant-negative interference of the mutant molecule with function of the wild type choline transporter, resulting in significantly reduced (although not completely abolished) transporter activity. This finding is further evidenced by the discovery of a second dHMN family associated with a distinct frameshift SLC5A7 mutation indicative of a similar dominant-negative disease mechanism. Together these findings corroborate a dominant-negative disease mechanism arising from C-terminal truncating SLC5A7 mutations associated with dHMN, and provide further insight into the role of aberrant choline transporter function in neurological disease. Chapter four describes N-terminal missense mutations located in the transmembrane spanning region of SLC5A7/CHT, associated with a severe infantile neuromuscular disorder characterised by predominantly central hypotonia and developmental delay. The phenotypic effects of these mutations are likely to result from the near abolition of CHT-mediated choline transport in homozygous individuals, and are in keeping with those observed in CHT knock-out mouse models(5). The development of a mouse model of the human motor neurone disease arising from SLC5A7 frameshift mutations should allow for further investigation of the mechanism by which truncated CHT leads to the dHMN phenotype. Chapter 5 details treatment hypotheses for dHMN, as well as the generation of a patient-specific knock-in mouse model carrying an Slc5a7 mutation orthologous to that identified in dHMN-VII families in chapter 3, and results from preliminary neurological phenotyping of the mouse model. This model will be crucially important for the exploration of treatment options in dHMN-VII motor neurone disease as a prelude to clinical trials in humans.

Abstract:
Background Nuclear reactors utilizing molten fuels rather than solid fuels show a massive advantage in energy yield, waste handling and safety features. The only successful reactor utilizing a molten fuel was called the ‘Molten Salt Reactor Experiment’ (MSRE), built and operated in the Oak Ridge national laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee, U.S.A. during the 1960s. The molten salts in question are fluoride compounds under the name of “FLiBe”. In this thesis, the heat exchangers of the MSRE are modelled and simulated, with the aim to test whether current computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and mathematical models can accurately predict molten salt heat transfer behaviour.  Methods All programs used are open-source and/or free-access to facilitate open collaboration between researchers in this growing field. All models and findings produced in this thesis are free to use for future research. The program Onshape was used to draw CAD-models based on hand-drawn technical documents released by ORNL. Several programs, e.g., Simscale and Salome, were used to create high detailed meshes of the heat exchangers. The CFD software Simscale and OpenFOAM have been used to simulate the heat exchangers, using the 𝑘 − 𝜔 𝑆𝑆𝑇 Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence model to perform a multiregion conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analysis. The program Paraview has been used for all post-processing on the large datasets.  Results A working toolchain with open-source programs for CFD has been identified. Highly detailed, full-scale and accurate CAD-drawings of the two heat exchangers have been produced. Models have been finely meshed, containing tens of millions of cells, with good quality measures. The simulations produced physically sound and valuable data: Great heat transfer predictive capability with high accuracy to the data presented by ORNL. Pressure data showed a consistent over-prediction with a factor of ~2. Possibility of error within the MSRE measurement.  Conclusions CHT using modern turbulence methods work well for the intended purpose and can be used by industry to simulate molten salt heat transfer. Open-source programs perform well and can be used by researchers to share ideas and progress. Doubts around certain measurements from the MSRE, showing large uncertainties. Future projects have been outlined to continue the work performed in this thesis. Molten salt reactors show fantastic promise as an energy generation method and should be seriously considered for the future of clean, reliable energy.

Brand image is the core of brand equity. The brand competitiveness almost equals to the core competence of the enterprise. Strong brand image can reduce the risk perception of consumers when they were shopping, and then improve their satisfaction and loyalty. Moreover, it may be an important competitive advantage to the market, a good brand image can benefit brand itself and provide a basis for the brand extension. Recently, the researches on brand image still assumed that it was tangible product such that these studies lacked research results regarding the service sector; Thus scholars mainly focus on identifying the major factors of the brand image thru the literature review and analysis from the methodological point of view, these studies belong to the theoretical analysis, absence of an empirical test. Actually, image exists in the mind of the consumers for which only through empirical research to really understand what the nature of brand image is and which factors are relative important to consumer. Accordingly, this study uses an quantitative investigation to examine the relevant brand factors of the mobile phone and theoretical model for consumers, and then create the questionnaire measurements for investigation of brand of mobile phone in order to provide a reference for constructing brand image and management purpose.

Corporate Identity System (CIS) is a total communication system which contains mind identity, behavior identity and visual identity; meanwhile, CIS has become a powerful strategy for managing current enterprise successfully. In order to alter former conservative corporation image and to establish a new、cordial、sincere and effective image for enterprise, CHT conducts CIS formally when reorganized. This study applies objective and scientific method of investigation to predict effect of CHT conduction of CIS1. By the Interview Survey, we found out that due to there is no exclusive administrative department for building up enterprise image for CHT, CHT had difficulty of executing identification of organization;meanwhile, because of lack of sampling when making enterprise image, CHT had problems of deficiency, mistake and misuse of regulations. 2. Compared with other private telecommunications companies, CHT had a negative comment of conservation, however, CHT also got positive appraise with powerful enterprise character and made internationally magnificent performance.3. The Questionnaire Survey shows that the investigated people are sure of that the effect of CHT conducting of corporation identification. 4. After reviewing the research, it is no doubt that the factors affecting the effect of use of CIS are emotional、rational、traditional and modern concepts, these parts play important roles and influence others mutually. The main cause influencing recognizing of particular styling (Mascots) is because of the design of corporation mark、 the characteristics of professions and the attributes of enterprises. Therefore, CI offers opportunities for enterprise to deliberate、evaluate and design strategies for im5. This study utilizes the modified method of SD for finding out the efficiency of conducting CI. Is the modified method more effective or not depends on further detailed and long researches for verification.

After the government has allowed privatized telecom companies to operate in Taiwan, Telecom industry has gradually become a red ocean battleground. Due to the fact that the customer base is limited (the max number of customers is basically the whole human population of Taiwan), it’s a huge troublesome for the marketing department to find the target customers for the appropriate campaigns/promotions, within the allowed time frame and budget. This research paper is based on how information technology (IT) can help to increase the efficiency of marketing people targeting the right customers within a given time frame and promotion goals, with the aid of a case study showing how the marketing department of a fix line broadband company greatly decrease the time of finding the precise customers after IT steps in. This paper will explain how IT, by first reviewing marketing people’s requirements, then using a systematic method, build-up a data model to fulfill these requirements and also build-up a best practice for data gathering and data cleansing, help to solve the issues of disperse Data Mart within the company. Then, using the commonly used pivot table interface, the marketing people will then be able to pick out the targeting customers within the shortest amount of time. The practice that is demonstrated within this paper should not only apply to this selective company, it should also be applicable to all industries &; corporations with large customer base. I believe the methodology that is mentioned in this paper.

Since joined the World Trade Organization in January, 2002, many industries in Taiwan have faced a profound influence and impact especially those having no competitive edges in the global markets. Accordingly, telecommunication industries will encounter an enormous turbulence on the globalization pathway in the future. Oversea revenues of multinational telecommunication companies such as Vodafone in England, NTT and NTT DoCoMo in Janpan, KT in Korea, SingTel(ST) in Singapore, and PCCW and Hutchison in Kong Hong has steadily increased and so do their oversea investments in recent years. Among all telecommunication companies, CHT is the largest in Taiwan, which has more resources and customer bases than others. Its business includes fixed network, mobile communication, and data communication…etc. However, as the market deregulated slowly, CHT will lose its privilege gradually in monopolizing the market shares as well as frequently adjusting the price without considering the consumer rights and the quality of its service. Nevertheless, CHT has built and managed the telecommunication infrastructure in the past. This creates hardships for some new companies to get into the business. In this study, we will explore the focal points of each country in telecommunication industry. We will discuss the ratio of the total revenue from this industry to the gross national product (GNP). Hopefully, we will be able to have an insight in knowing the contribution and the importance of the industry to the nation. We have focused on the individual case studies of these five telecommunication companies, CHT, NTT, KT, ST, and PCCW. Comparison will be made on the basis of the study results and the readily available telecommunication index. We are able to see the differences among them. Finally, according to the collected data that were analyzed by Mike Porter''s Five-Force and Weihrich''s SWOT methods, results demonstrate advantages and disadvantages in competing the worldwide market shares and the current rivalry conditions among these five leading telecommunication firms. Among them, CHT has the strongest financial strength and vast technologies. If this superiority can wisely be applied in expanding the international market, it will be of great help to the company''s operating revenue and also lowering the risk.

This study takes the service of Multimedia on Demand (MOD) offered by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) as the subject. We assume that MOD is a Strategic Business Unit (SBU) of CHT to map out a feasible strategy and structure applying the business model proposed by Hamel (2000). The first step is to build the MOD business model according to Hamel’s four dimensions (Core Strategy, Strategic Resource, Customer Interface and Value Network) and three linkages (Customer Benefit, Configuration and Company Boundary). Second, use Hamel’s four factors of profit decision (Efficiency, Unique, Fit and Profit Booster) to construct efficient methods to ensure the earnings of the business model. Applying Hamel’s business model to CHT-MOD, we concluded the following: 1. Among Hamel’s four dimensions, value network is the most significant for CHT to extend MOD service. 2. To stand out from the CATV competitors, CHT has to maintain superior differentation by continuously developing and innovating the MOD business model and providing updated customer-oriented service. 3. Unique configuration links strategic resources to core strategy sufficiently to maximize operation benefits.

Since the deregulation of the telecommunication industry, our company has been confronted with various internal as well as external challenges. Externally, we are facing an ever-competitive market, which resorts to endless price-cutting as a business tactic. As a result, not only that we have lost market share of customers, but the profit margin has steadily deteriorated. Internally, we are challenged with an aging workforce, whose mentality is ill-adjusted for the ferocious competition industry-wide. Some employees are plagued with low moral, due in part to the uncertainty about the company’s privatizing status. The net result is a clear adverse effect on the overall productivity output of our company as a whole. Despite the efforts put forth to motivate our employees, the outcome is nowhere near our expectation. This ineffectiveness, ironically is due to a combination of job security, comfortable work atmosphere and above-average wages. Our management must investigate the employee mentality in depth, so that effective motivation measures can be undertaken. The endeavor is absolutely required to promote work ethics and improve the company’s competitive edge. We have recently conducted a written survey, which is aimed primarily to determining employee job satisfaction. As a part of the survey analysis, we also intend to compare job satisfaction between employees of internal and external responsibilities. The survey reveals above-average satisfaction toward teamwork, individual work, wages, collegiateship and direct supervisorship. The only below-average satisfaction rating fell into the category of rank promotion. The survey also indicates that job satisfaction differs between genders and employees of different responsibility areas. Other than gender and job nature, all employees showed insignificant differences in job satisfaction. Further, the survey reveals that (1) intrinsic motivation and cognition of equity significantly affect employee job satisfaction of both the internals and the externals, the effect being more prominent with the internals (2) extrinsic motivation shows no effect on job satisfaction in either the internals or the externals. Suggestions to the company:Prior to privitization, it’s essential for the company to consider two factors that apparently contribute to job satisfaction, i.e., intrinsic motivation and cognition of equity. The company should implement a motivation system with appropriate measures to improve job satisfaction and work moral. These measures, as successfully employed by private sectors of the industry, may include commission, dividend and equity sharing.

In response to increasing competition, Chunghwa Telecom MOD should commit itself to the transformation of the rapid network television development. The purpose of this study is to promote the delivery of a play platform for the brand new ChungHwa Telecom MOD ( CHT MOD ) based on data collected from in-depth interviews and the theory of Value- based Adoption Model (Kim, Chan, & Gupta, 2007) . This study examines the ChungHwa Telecom on-line MOD (ieMOD OnLine, MODOL ) which allows the viewers to watch MOD videos on computers that are connected to the Internet without having to install a complete Set-Top Box (STB) and to enjoy a valuable package of free television channels and pay-per-view contents for video on demand. For the first phase, we strive to expand the market of ChungHwa MODOL digital television for specific users and college students to enhance the competitiveness of ChungHwa Telecom multi-media. From the in-depth interviews of the assigned student group, participants in this study expressed their positive views and interests in Chunghwa Telecom MODOL. The survey results from the student participants indicate a strong positive support for the preferential facets but concerns for the shortcoming facets of “Technicality” issues that may have negative effects on the perceived value. However, they believed that based on our cognitive habits, this would not have an impact on the perceived value of the product. Overall, student population demonstrated their willingness to adopt the product through the recognition of most facets and the perceived values. This study hopes to provide the industry with some new inspirations and recommendations so that they can be in a dominant position and elevate to the next level in the face of competition in the multimedia market.

Abstract Internet service market has been developing prosperously for more than 10 years. The Internet surfing population has rapidly increased from the end of last century till now which is almost saturated. Under the circumstance of the fatal impacts of the openness of the telecommunication market, the breakthroughs of the information and communication technology and the changes of consumer’s demand, the ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) product services of the CHT (Chunghwa Telecom Co.) seems followed the three different stages of the Product Life Cycle (PLC) during the past decade. The CHT has been adjusted its competitive strategies and marketing strategies in each stage in order to acquire its competitive advantages and success. The purpose of this study is to utilize the progressing stages of PLC as a structure to analyze the CHT broadband product--ADSL services. Namely, this study tried to review its progress of development in the three stages about ADSL product services; and intended to find out the important factors of gaining competitive advantages successfully in providing ADSL services to the general public. The methodology used in this study includes using the timeline to divide the ADSL service life cycle into three stages of development, then focusing on analysis of each stage in the aspects of marketing segmentation, selecting target markets, and positioning analysis of ADSL product services. The facets of marketing mix 4P (including product, price, place and promotion) tools are also used simultaneously to analyze the competitive and marketing strategies adopted by the CHT service programs in this study. The research results indicated that CHT broadband products not only fit to the PLC, but also developed its own unique competitive strategies in each stage of life cycle. Moreover, the fitness of FTTX (Fiber To The X) and ADSL will be as the critical and strategic issues when the CHT faces the “Triple play” market in the near future. The CHT has to create the synergy of integrating its business units for aiming at competing with upcoming challenges of Cable Modem’s new technical implementation in the telecommunication service industry.

Keeping relationship partnership with customer is benefitful for creating value, reducing searching and transaction cost. The powerful information technology is helpful for interacting with customers and addressing their needs. Customer relationship management (CRM) becomes an effective way for competitive advantage. The core factor for successful CRM is the effective utilization of information technology to support the CRM process. This study adopts information processing model to investigate the fit between CRM’ s information processing requirements and information processing capabilities, and their effects on CRM performance. The information processing requirements are derived from the uncertainty, and equivocality of CRM activities, and the information processing capabilities are determined by the media richness and information quantity, which varies by the type of communication media. In the case study research methodology. The chunghwa Telecom Co’ s Telecommunication was selected for our single case study design. The units of analysis are customer relationship activities, including idea generating, promotion, sales, inquiry, accounting, after sales service, and change service. Data were collected by multiple sources of evidences, including published documents, websites, interviews and questionnaires. The interview was focused on senior employees in marketing department of chunghwa Telecom, including the information processing requirement and information processing capabilities. Next about customer satisfaction and loyalty, this research adopts questionnaires survey in northern, central, and southern areas, three strata for stratified random sampling. Base on the data, the fit between information requirement and capabilities, and relationship quality, in terms of satisfaction and loyalty are measured. The propositions concern the relationship between the degree of fit satisfaction and loyalty. For the CRM in Telecommunication industry, this research concluded that (一) there are different information process requirements for different marketing activities. (二) The information processing capabilities varies media for different communication. (三) Degree of fit information processing requirements, and information processing capabilities are positively related to customer satisfaction. (四) Degree of fit information processing requirements, and information processing capabilities are positively related to customer loyalty. This research focused on part of no fit and provides some useful suggestions for telecommunication companies in the following area: (1)about website : need to design contents and interfaces, (2)about people : reinforce people of expertise, communications, and the education of training ; (3)about call center : reinforce system ; (4)about Documents : set up contents and rearrange of documents ; (5) the integration of different media, and continue to adopt new media .

Thesis Abstract There are six private telecommunication companies granted to operate the wireless mobile communication services in late 1997,that have fractured The ChungHwa Telecommunication''s (CHT for abbreviation) monopoly on the telecommunication service market in Taiwan, and resulting in ten times of growth in mobile users. Nevertheless, at the end of the year 2000, there are three new telecommunication operation companies joined the fixed line communication services market, so the CHT will receive even more competitive pressure. Since the domestic communication market is the mature stage, those new entrants shall quickly ascend their market shares by means of divvying original CHT''s, especially those so call "Enterprise Accounts" in the metropolis are aimed targets. By surveying sampled special accounts of the southern Taiwan branch of CHT, this study probe into the subject of special accounts'' satisfaction degree, difference between the experienced service quality and the service quality expected, relationship between the service quality and the satisfaction degree. With the statistic software SPSS, I analysis 121 feedback questionaries and found that the special accounts appreciate indeed the service items, but not satisfied. In addition, the T-test exam reveal, the special accounts of southern Taiwan deem that CHT should improve the premium pricing, the communication quality, and the professional consulting. Since the competitive situation is switched on, CHT ought to broaden its comprehensive span of special accounts category on one hand, but to strengthen its manpower for professional knowledge of substantial assistance on the other hand, if CHT wish to remain its dominant status.

In recent years, privatization of Government-enterprises companies is popular over the world because of the degradations on their performances. The action aims at improving the capability of company’s competition. In the past decade, the Total Quality Management (TQM) scheme has been widely implemented in European countries, Unite State, and Japan, etc. Its effectiveness on improving the operation efficiency and the competition capability of a company has been confirmed. In Taiwan, the Chunghwa Telecom Co.,Ltd. (CHT), which is a Government-enterprises company, has been scheduled to accomplish a goal of liberalization, privatization, and globalization before 2001. A series of actions have been taken to adjust the company organization for making it more competitive. In this thesis, the study focuses on the performance evaluation of the implementation of the TQM scheme on an action plan realized in the Southern Taichung Branch Office of CHT. The study compares the responses of two questionnaires of service quality to customs. The first query was held in the beginning of implementing the TQM while the second one was held six months later. A statistical analysis of the responses of these two queries showed that the service quality has indeed been improved by the implementation of the TQM.

Pursuant to the progress and development of Internet technology, all media are changing rapidly. New forms of media will greatly alter the operations of traditional media as well as the patterns of competition withinthe industry. In recent years, the trend of IPTV has been to exhibit rapid growth, becoming a media mainstay. In the telecommunications field, CHT has been involved in the operation of IPTV and has offered its own MOD since March 2004. The emergence of this new industry and related digital content is a trendsetting development. On January 30, 2007, the NCC stipulated that MOD be placed under the telecom law of the ROC and that CHT should therefore be treated as an Internent service provider. Television signals, including increased channel content, a large variety of VOD programming and numerous interactive functions, are accessible islandwide. CHT originally expected to seize and hold a large share of this market. However, this has unfortunately not come to pass: the company reached a 2008 year-end total of only 676,029 MOD customers despite having set a target of 1.2m. Furthermore, the service had only been taken up by 666,859 subscribers by the end of the next year (2009) despite a reduced goal of 1.0m. (CHTC actually LOST 10,000 subscribers year-to-year). As of the end of 2010 1Q subscribers totalled 670,000. This paper (THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN...) made use of the available literature plus survey results. Through this analysis, it is hoped that CHT can be provided with information concerning the factors contributing to the slow growth of MOD uptake. It is also hoped that this research can arrive at a conclusion which will offer CHT suggestions aimed at improving strategy and marketing in the future.
