Abstract:
As the poverty rate continues to rise, many individuals seek assistance to help meet basic needs. Previous research has indicated that churches provide a social safety net for those in need, yet some churches choose not to become human service providers. The purpose of this multicase study was to explore how pastoral transformational leadership influences a church's decision to become a provider of human services among African American pastors and churches. Transformational leadership provided the theoretical framework for this study. The purposeful sample included bounded systems of 5 pastors and their respective churches. Each case was bound by race, location, and denomination. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used as a tool to identify each pastor's leadership style, and interviews were used to determine how the church becomes a human service provider. Interviews were transcribed, inductively coded, and analyzed to identify recurring themes. The results of this research indicated that the transformational pastor is influential in all aspects of the church's human service initiatives. The transformational pastor plays a key role in determining whether the church becomes involved in human service initiatives, and he or she remains involved throughout initiation, implementation, and sustainability. Findings from this study may influence pastoral leadership training and provide a framework for churches and communities who wish to help meet the social needs in their communities. If churches consistently address poverty-related issues, they can address the underlying problems associated with it. This can result in a decrease in the poverty rate over time. This contribution can potentially help decrease the rate of poverty in the community.

Abstract:
This qualitative study investigates how leadership is embodied within the role of seminary principals in released-time seminaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This study utilized a grounded theory approach and constant comparative analysis while triangulating the data obtained from personal interviews, participant observations, and analysis of documents. The primary sources of data came from the personal experiences and perspectives of four principals, eight teachers, and one area administrator that are analyzed through biographical interviews. Analyses of the data were completed to determine common themes of leadership that were embodied by principals in released-time seminaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Results included the importance of: (a) principals as trainers, (b) a lack of training for seminary principals, (c) principals as a reflection of higher administration, (d) principal's influence on faculty unity, (e) principal's focus on assisting the struggling student, (f) ensuring faculty professionalism, (g) personal satisfaction and growth, and (h) managerial organization. Recommendations from this study help provide a framework of leadership practices for current and future seminary principals, as well as those who oversee seminary principals within the Church Educational System.

Abstract:
One of the few quantifiable measures available for any study of society in the medieval period, other than economic and fiscal data, is the evidence of shared beliefs and values as expressed through the cult of saints. The chronology and geography of this phenomenon, of which one aspect is the dedication of churches, forms a vital, but often mishandled class of evidence for tackling a range of fiscal and historical issues relative to patterns of settlement, community, lordship and patronage, trans-national as well as insular. This thesis concentrates on a single region, the pre-Reformation diocese of Worcester, which is generally agreed to have been coterminous with the early Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the Hwicce, because it is both rich in medieval documentary evidence, and provides a sufficiently large corpus of evidence to provide reasonable amounts of data for statistical interrogation and/or intuitive judgement. This study therefore exploited medieval documentary evidence, chiefly wills, of which more than 600 were examined, but also including episcopal, legal and other records in transcript and in printed editions, in addition to evidence already published in the Victoria County Histories. The results were collated in a dataset of evidence for the dedications of churches and other foci of religious observance. Since churches operated as integral parts of the medieval systems of community, economy, and administration, the study attempts systematically to identify the superior settlements of the region in successive medieval periods, and to suggest a reconstruction of early landed units of lordship and administration within which the region's chronological and spatial patterns of dedication may be further examined. A variety of published sources was used for this part of the investigation. The results of the database collation, set against the evidence for superior settlements and landed units, form the basis for a discussion of chronological and spatial patterns of cult observance. In conclusion, the study identifies areas for further study, and suggests ways in which such an approach may be applied in other regions so as to provide a tool for historians tackling a range of issues. The dataset and spatial evidence form an appendix. The dataset is available on disk for other researchers to interrogate.

Abstract:
An economic recession can disproportionately affect the financial stability of churches because their income relies primarily on voluntary contributions. The purpose of this phenomenological study, framed by servant leadership theory, was to explore lived experiences and perceptions related to church leaders' strategies for coping with the economic downturn in 2008. A purposive sample of 20 church leaders from Tennessee was recruited to explore the changes that have been made in church operational strategies in order to cope with the recession. The interview data were iteratively examined by using keywords, phrases, and concepts and were coded into categories, which led to the identification of the following themes: (a) implementing cost reduction efforts and increasing the reliance on volunteers for facility upkeep, (b) collaborating with other church leaders for assistance referrals and fraud detection, and (c) sharing facilities and dividing expenses. The study results contribute to positive social change by providing strategies that church leaders can implement to mitigate the negative effects of a financial downturn, strengthen their financial position and stability, and enable them to provide necessary community support. Financial stability in neighborhood churches is conducive to a stronger community because churches serve as focal points for volunteerism and assistance delivery.

The term, Elizabethan Settlement, when applied solely to the adoption of the Prayer Book in 1559 or the Thirty-nine Articles in 1563, is misleading. The final form of the Settlement was the result of a creative struggle which involved Elizabeth and her advisers, together with the bishops and the local populace. The bishops introduced the Settlement in their dioceses and began a process of change which involved the laity and the local clergy. Through the ensuing implementation process the ultimate form of religion in England was defined.

Abstract:
Churches contribute both indirectly and directly to community economic development and social transformation. Some researchers cite lack of leadership as a factor in Christian churches in the United States experiencing declining attendance, with many churches closing. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a senior pastor's past and current church leadership experience affects servant leadership practices in the pastor's current church. Servant leadership theory was this quantitative, correlational study's theoretical framework. Five research questions focused on a pastor's past and present church leadership experience and how it affects the servant leadership practices within the organization's leadership. Forty-six leaders from 6 church organizations took the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA). Individual church OLA scores were calculated and then analyzed using correlation and moderation analysis against each pastor's past and present experience. Findings did not indicate any statistically significant relationship between a pastor's past or present leadership experience and servant leadership practices within the church. Additional research using is recommended, as statistics did show trends indicating some statistical significance may be uncovered with a larger sample size. Findings could enhance social change initiatives by identifying which church organizational servant leadership aspects emerge early in a pastor's tenure as opposed to those aspects which emerge after more time, experience, and training. This study will benefit church and not-for-profit leaders by providing a better understanding of how a leader's work experience affects organizational leadership behaviors.

Abstract:

This mixed quantitative/qualitative study explored the role that Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays in the leadership of church planters in Restoration Movement Churches in the U.S. (specifically Independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ) and the relationship between the EI profiles of lead church planters and healthy church growth patterns, according to attendance and financial data 3 years after being planted. This study found that EI plays both a causal role and correlates strongly with healthy church growth within the first 3 years of a new church plant's life. As the first study of its kind among a Restoration Movement sample of church planters, this study assists church planting organizations in identifying and training new church leaders, as well as ongoing leadership development and coaching of individuals who have been called to be church planters.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to isolate how the successful Church of God in Christ women leaders combine work, church and family life. This study explores the experiences that mold the life course of women and how they affect work-family life balance. The goal is to extract these strategies and provide them to other women interested in pursuing leadership roles in the church and in their careers all while balancing family life. Qualitative data was analyzed to find coping strategies, and themes.

Giele (2008) developed the life course theoretical framework used in this study. She discussed the framework in her article entitled “Homemaker of Career Women: Life Course Factors and Racial Influences Among Middle Class Families.” Giele’s (2008) study focused on 48 women. After interviewing these women, Giele categorized these interviews in to 4 categories of questions, which are as follows: childhood, adulthood, current adulthood and future adulthood. Exploring these categories provide an inside look at each woman’s perception of their identity, relationship types, motivations and adaptive styles.

In 2011, Dr. Margaret Weber and her team duplicated Giele’s study but later decided to add an additional set of questions to the semi-structured questionnaire. These additional questions were created to allow women an opportunity to share their coping strategies which can be used to inform others. The additional questions also help to complete the life course process and inform others (Weber, 2011).

This dissertation research is based on Giele’s (2008) study and enhanced by Weber’s (2011) additional set of questions. The life course framework helps to analyze the narratives of women and to isolate data pertaining to work-life balance. This phenomenological study strives to understand all contributors impacting this balance.

Abstract:

A Shepherd’s responsibility is to care for and guide sheep in such a way that they (sheep) can effectively and proficiently perform the duties that are natural and necessary to sheep. The same is true with leaders and managers as it relates to their followers. This quantitative correlational research study was conducted to discover whether the biblical shepherd leadership model, particularly its characteristics, practices, and responsibilities (CPR), were related to successful church growth. A 45-item Likert type survey was used to ascertain the level of shepherd leadership of 106 pastors in the Church of God in Michigan. This score was then compared with statistical information found in the treasurers and ministry reports namely, attendance, tithe, and conversions that took place at these pastors’ local churches within a five year period. The results of the study showed a statistical positive association between shepherd leadership and the attendance and financial data. The data also showed a negative association between shepherd leadership and conversions. These findings will be helpful to pastors, educators, and church leaders to be more effective in ministry.

Abstract:
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) disproportionately affect African Americans in the South; given that population's high rate of church attendance, churches have been one potential avenue for HIV/AIDS education. Research has shown the importance of HIV/AIDS education in reducing risk behavior and infection, although church-based HIV/AIDS prevention programs for adults have received little scholarly attention, including the impact of such programs on attitudes, behavioral control, and intention to engage in safe sexual practices. Using Ajzens' theory of planned behavior as a foundation, the purpose of this quantitative study was to explore whether there is a statistically significant difference in attitudes, behavior control, and intention to engage in safe practices as a result of participation in a church program. Survey data were collected from a convenience sample of 132 adult participants, 68 of whom participated in a church-based HIV/AIDS prevention program, and a control group of 64 participants from a congregation without a program. Wilcoxon Ranks Tests were used to analyze the data. The results indicated a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in regards to social norms and perceived behavioral control. There was no significant difference in the attitudes between the 2 groups. Implications for positive social change include informing policy makers and practitioners of the importance of church-based HIV/AIDS prevention programs as an innovative tool for adults to establish more effective HIV/AIDS prevention programs that will positively impact other ethnic groups at higher risk of acquiring the infection and disease.

Abstract:
Although many U.S. faith-based organizations have become partners to the government, the African American Pentecostal Church (AAPC), which holds spirituality as a means of serving humanity as its theological framework, has remained a silent partner in public policy engagement. With the framework of spiritual intelligence, this qualitative case study addressed the perceptions of African American Pentecostal leaders regarding how the church’s theology may have an impact on the public policy engagement of its parishioners. Twelve African American Pentecostal Bishops were interviewed, and data were coded and analyzed to identify themes. Results revealed that participants use their spirituality to connect with public policy issues that relate to their personal experiences. Findings also indicated that the AAPC is not an organized denomination, but rather a conglomeration of factions. Lack of an organized epicenter and lack of training and development of its leaders prevent this church from engaging in the public sphere. Although members embrace their responsibility to care for the needs of others, the church lacks a collective response to community issues. Findings may be used to prepare the next generation of AAPC leaders to unify the church to offer spiritual solutions to public policy issues.

Abstract:
Business intelligence (BI) involves transforming data into actionable information to make better business decisions that may help improve operations. Although businesses have experienced success with BI, how leaders of church organizations might be able to exploit the advantages of BI in church organizations remains largely unexplored. The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of pastoral leaders concerning the potential usefulness of BI in church organizations. Conceptual support for the study was based on the premise that churches may also benefit from BI that helps improve decision making and organizational performance. Three research questions were used to examine the current role of BI in church organizations, the potential usefulness of BI in church organizations, and potential conflicts that might exist between spiritual and BI management objectives. Semistructured interviews were used to obtain data from 20 pastoral leaders. The data were analyzed using the modified Van Kaam method of analysis. The results indicated that pastoral leaders perceived that BI can be a useful technology in church organizations. Additionally, the pastoral leaders did not perceive any conflict between BI and church management objectives. Church leaders may be able to take advantage of BI to achieve their social outreach programs. As a result, local churches can have a greater social impact on the surrounding communities.

A tremendous opportunity exists for church and business leaders to work together to bridge an ever-widening gap in both dialogue and understanding of the needs of believers on the front-lines of workplace service. Church leaders are anointed and responsible for equipping believers for ministry in all spheres of life, including service in the marketplace (Eph. 4:13). Church and business professionals need each other; however, due to realities such as the sacred-secular divide and unbiblical working definitions of "ministry" and "vocation," countless numbers of believers have a bifurcated, compartmentalized view of life and vocation. Research reveals that the vast majority of believers do not view their work as an expression of worship to God and service to others.

Phase one of this project involves research in the form of fifteen interviews with church and business leaders to understand their worldviews so as to better appreciate the factors contributing to the gap. Phase two involves the creation of a Workplace Roundtable Curriculum informed by the interviews and then piloted with church and business leaders at three Roundtable discussions.

The interviews and Roundtables yielded rich and thoughtful discussions about "whole-life discipleship" and revealed that participants believe workplace discussions are productive and worthwhile. These discussions help facilitate a greater understanding of the sacred-secular divide and its negative, damaging effects on believers, as well as a deeper appreciation of the biblical meaning of "ministry" and "vocation."

Abstract:
After 30 plus years of research, clergy burnout is an ongoing concern; as such, it is important to identify the causes of this phenomenon. Researchers have already demonstrated that internal factors such as personality types, personal mastery, or conflict management and external factors such as role conflict, excessive activities, or unrealistic expectations, can lead to burnout. The problem that led to this study was that more exploration is needed about clergy's perceptions on leadership and burnout within the church. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore clergy within the Wesleyan Church in the Midwest to discover their perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. The conceptual framework was shaped by the great man theory of leadership and Maslach's burnout theory. The central research question for this study focused on clergy's perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. Data were collected using face-to-face semistructured interviews with 23 pastors who are currently leading and experiencing burnout. Data collected included transcribed interviews, field notes, and observations. Data were hand-coded to find key concepts and themes. Two themes that emerged from the data were leadership is understood as hierarchical and leadership is understood as the work of solo actors, which were consistent with the great man theory of leadership. The results of this study may contribute to a better understanding of the factors that lead to clergy burnout. The results of this study will address a gap in literature and may result in positive social change for both the clergy and church congregants because the results can be used to come up with solutions for burnout. This study may also lead to new theories about clergy burnout.

Abstract:
The problem under investigation is that there is little research about how church leaders develop and design HIV/AIDS education and support programs in selected counties of New York State. The gap in the literature is that there is little known about how church leaders support the educational process for the HIV/AIDS Black community in New York state. The theory of normative decision making was the primary conceptual framework for this research. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory multi-case study was to discover how church leaders managed their HIV/AIDS outreach program strategies. The overarching question asked what programs and education do church leaders use to support those with HIV/AIDS and how can church leaders within the selected counties, provide preventative education forums within their congregations. Data collection occurred through 6 semi structured face-to-face interviews with church leaders in the counties of New York State. Data analysis resulted in themes that included how managing HIV/AIDS outreach strategies increases participation, promotes understanding, and immobilizes the spread of HIV/AIDS. The themes that emerged suggested that democratic leadership style made for successful program leaders and existing program features built trust between the church and those in the surrounding communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. Recommendations for action include examining the structure of an active outreach ministry, synchronizing programs, and increasing resources to manage Faith-based organization strategies effectively. This study contributes to positive social change by religious leaders serving as peer educators and advocates within their church community for HIV/AIDS prevention education, igniting discussions, removing stigma, and increasing the number of individuals who voluntarily test for HIV/AIDS.

Abstract:
Purpose. The purpose of this project was to explore ways and administrative means for fostering change in the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in terms of leadership and personnel appointments. This denomination, with historical roots and structure in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, functions now as an African denomination with unique situations relative to its culturally diverse membership. This study was initiated by the current surge in church growth and expansions in Kenya, and a subsequent decline in effective church leadership. The current shortage of ministers and other personnel has intensified the problem and created a style of church administration characterized by 'authoritative leadership' controlled by a few. This has diminished the kind of leadership needed for the broader areas of ministry required by church growth. The current procedure for the appointing of personnel in parishes, in church sponsored schools and in hospitals is also quite inadequate. This study was designed to determine the specific problems and to seek ways to help correct the situation through some changes which can be recommended to the church. Method and procedures. This project was undertaken at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, under the leadership of a faculty appointed doctoral committee, with assistance from ministers and their families from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa studying in Atlanta, other Presbyterian students from Africa, consultants, as well as P.C.E.A. members and Church officials in Kenya. The local participants were used as a project group which met in six structured discussion sessions, each with different foci, two of which were led by church consultants. Questionnaires were used as research tools with local participants as well as participants in Kenya. Church officials in Kenya were interviewed by telephone, with a follow-up analyses by the project group and the writer. The project input also reflects the writer's library research including books and periodicals which were obtained directly from Kenya. A historical study was made of different types of leadership styles and personnel appointment procedures employed from the inception of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa with Scottish missionaries denomination through models currently operating in the denomination. Conclusions and recommendations. This study concluded with recommendations which can be summarized as follows. 1. The suspension of the 'Right of Call' by the denomination in the early 1960s was done without careful study. After making the desired adjustments and changes, this method of posting pastors should be introduced again as a pilot project in certain areas for a period of ten (10) years to determine the effectiveness of this process. The Appointments Committee should monitor the implementation of the 'Right of Call' by parishes, and be allowed to intervene in situations where the respect of the 'Right of Call' is assessed to be abused. The final appointment letter should come from the Secretary of the Appointments Committee, thus reminding the pastors that they are answerable both to the parish and to the presbytery. Ministers salaries should then be determined in accordance with the 'Right of Call,' and funds should be made available to develop those areas which have no 'Right of Call.' 2. Reduce the bureaucracy of P.C.E.A. by returning the power of leadership to the Presbyteries. This will remove the power from the 'head office' personnel (Moderator, Secretary General, and Finance Officer) to local Presbyteries, thus, allowing a more democratic form of leadership. This will also allow a more democratic form of appointment of personnel for ministers, hospitals and schools, wherein local tribes, cultures and customs can be taken into consideration with respect. Allow the office of the moderator of the General Assembly to be more of a ceremonial office rather than an executive office. During the study it was determined by the project group and the writer that the Presbyterian Church of East Africa has been influenced by the episcopal system of bishops which is antithetical to denominations in the (Presbyterian) Reformed tradition. Merge head office 'departments' into 'desks' with similar areas of concern, so that there are fewer personnel in the head office, further strengthening the administrative role of Presbyteries. 3. The church should take seriously its pastoral responsibilities in church sponsored schools and institutions and appoint a minister in every Presbytery to serve in a pastoral capacity in schools and institutions. 4. Consider paying the three top employees of the church sponsored hospitals through the hospital's Boards. Also allow overseas volunteers or missionary staff to work in hospitals for not less than two years in order eliminate the problems created by shorter terms of service.
