Abstract:
This book considers how one protestant community responded to the challenges posed to traditional understandings of Christian faith between 1830 and 1930. It examines the attitudes of the leaders of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland to biblical criticism, modern historical method, evolutionary science, and liberal forms of protestant theology. It explores how they reacted to developments in other Christian traditions, including the so-called ‘Romeward’ trend in the established Churches of England and Ireland and the ‘Romanization’ of Catholicism. Was their response distinctively Presbyterian

Fuller faced an uncertain future on his return to London in the wake of the royalist collapse. Friends assisted him, and he found convenient lodging at Sion College. In 1648 he was appointed minister of Waltham Abbey by James Hay, earl of Carlisle, the church’s patron. Fuller published a major work on the history and geography of the Holy Land, a collection of biographies of Protestant divines, and an edition of the debates in Parliament in 1628-9. He lamented the trial and execution of King Charles in a published sermon. He also defended in print practices of the Church that had been abolishe

Abstract:
Protestant fundamentalism has had no denominational boards and no higher organizational authority. In their absence, institutions of higher education have often served as the forums in which conservative evangelicals debated the meanings of their faith. They have also become vital centers for political and cultural activism. From the 1920s through the 1980s, colleges, universities, Bible institutes, and seminaries have been the hubs of a loosely connected network of evangelical and fundamentalist churches and organizations. In many ways, the institutional needs of higher education have shaped

Abstract:
The nineteenth century was a very good century for Congregationalism in England and Wales. This chapter documents the significant numerical growth it achieved during this period, and its energetic efforts in the area of missions, both foreign and domestic. Congregationalists provided the lifeblood of the large, well-funded London Missionary Society, and the most celebrated missionary of the age, David Livingstone, was a Scottish Congregationalist. Throughout this chapter the question of whether generalizations about Congregationalism in England were also true of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland is

Abstract:
Throughout the first three decades of the twentieth century, alumni and students from historically black colleges and universities contributed to the American Protestant mission movement in West Africa. Those contributions extended beyond the manual labor endeavors promoted by Booker T. Washington and the Phelps Stokes Fund; African American missionaries also adapted classical studies and self-help ideology to a transnational context. This book analyzes the effects and significance of black education strategies through the ministries of Althea Brown and Alonzo Edmiston from 1902 to 1941. Brown

Abstract:
The nineteenth century was a period of remarkable advance for the Baptists in the United Kingdom. The vigour of the Baptist movement was identified with the voluntary system and the influence of their leading pulpiteers, notably Charles Haddon Spurgeon. However, Baptists were often divided on the strictness of their Calvinism, the question of whether baptism as a believer was a prerequisite for participation in Communion, and issues connected with ministerial training. By the end of the century, some Baptists led by F.B. Meyer had recognized the ministry of women as deaconesses, if not as past
