This dissertation addresses issues related to convergence and divergence of the funeral ceremony of the Church of World Messianity in Japan and Brazil. Funeral plays a fundamental role in the religious work of the Church of World Messianity. The model of ritual presented throughout the presentpaper was proposed by the Second Spiritual Leader,Nidai-Sama, and considered ideal for this kind of rite of passage. The Second Spiritual Leader Nidai-Sama and (wife of the founder Mokichi Okada), who grounded the liturgy principles of the Church of World Messianity, wrote teachings to guide the followers through the fullfilment of such acts. Therefore, given the different cultural aspects between the two countries as well as the specific aspects of the Church of World Messianity, we seek to answer the following questions:Were there any adaptations to the process of transplantation of a liturgy from Japan to Brazil? If adaptations occurred in different poles (cultural, religious and social ones), with theirrespective traditions and habits, which were these adaptations and in which aspects did theytake placeregarding the practice of funeral ritual in the host culture? To answer these questions, we seek justification in the Theory of Religious Transplantation, by Martin Baumann, which allowed us to conclude that convergences and divergences occurring in the transplantation process contributed to a better understanding of rituals of messianic doctrine by the Brazilian community

Abstract:
During the papacy of Avignon, so most cardinals are buried either in the pontifical city, or in their country of origin, some of them choose contrary to founding in their place of origin not only one religious community but also of the buildings to accommodate their tomb. They imitate in that the successive popes, in particular Clement V and Clement VI. In parallel, develops at the 14th century, under the impulse of John XXII, the creation of secular collegial news in the South of France.Pierre des Prés (1280-1361), quercynois, is a close relation of John XXII. Lawyer, it gains the confidence of the pope who created it cardinal in 1321, then invests it in 1325 load of vice-chancellor of the Church. The first part of this work is devoted to a biography of this character and also shows his desire to socially raise the members of its family. The cardinal des Prés is also, just like of other cardinals among his contemporaries, the founder of a religious community, charged to take care on his skin. If it chose secular canons, others privileged the orders Beggars. These is the choice which is examined and studied in the second part. To shelter these monks, Pierre des Prés made build a church in his native village, Montpezat-of-Quercy. Classified with the title as of Historic buildings by 1840, this building proved little known. Our study replaces collegial church Saint Martin in her context of construction, between 1337 and 1343, but also presents the materials used, the techniques employed, the job management and the men who have work on the project. Lastly, the last part tackles the question of the memory of the cardinal, built thanks to his tomb and with the many objects offered by him to its collegial chapter. Thanks to the latter, the memory of Pierre des Prés was transmitted of century in century, thus agreeing with the worms of Pétrarque: the fame overcomes death

M'bra, Jean-Claude. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018STRAK007.

Abstract:
The question of the celebration of Christian funerals in a context of dual religious affiliation among the Baoulés of Côte d'Ivoire obliges us to focus our reflection on the theology of the inculturation of faith. On reconsidering moreover the concept of dual affiliation, it can be argued that this notion becomes a requirement of inculturation understood as a "dramadialogy". It fits into a logic of dialogue between Christianity and Baoulé religious beliefs in the course of which the elements of the Baoulé culture die off to their non-values for a transfigurative resurrection. But at the same time, by welcoming this message, this culture enriches the heritage of the Church. The reappropriation of the Christian theological discourse on death and funeral rituals from a perspective of African sense is the peculiar feature of this theological construction which is also to be situated within the limits of this same semantic field of the process of inculturation seen as a "dramadialogy". We should not forget, however, to point out that this entire trajectory of inculturated thanatic theology, enlightened by the actuality of the paschal mystery, must also open up to the Pentecostal catholicity of the Church

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the lives of men and women living in London and Bury St. Edmunds in the late fourteenth - early fifteenth centuries. Sources studied include the administrative and legal records of the City of London and of the Abbot and Convent of St. Edmund's abbey; legislation and court records of royal government and the wills and testaments of Londoners and Bury St. Edmunds' inhabitants. Considerable research on a wide range of topics on London, but far less work on Bury St. Edmunds, has already been undertaken; however, this thesis is the first systematic comparative study of these two towns. The introduction discusses the historiography and purpose of the thesis; the methodology used, and the shortcomings of using medieval wills and the probate process. Chapter One discusses the testamentary jurisdiction in both towns; who was involved in the will making process, and the role that clerics played as both executors and scribes and how the church courts operated. Chapter Two focuses on testators' preparations for the afterlife, their choices concerning burial location, funeral arrangements and the provisions made for prayers for their souls. Chapter Three examines in detail their pious and charitable bequests and investigates what ‘good works' testators chose to support apart from ‘forgotten tithes'. The family and household relationships, including servants and apprentices, are examined in Chapter Four, exploring the differences in bequests made depending on the testators' marital status, together with evidence for close friendships and social networks. Chapter Five discusses the ownership and types of books referred to in wills and the inter-relationship between the donors and the recipients. Testators' literacy and the provision for education are also investigated.

Palmer, George H. "Stoep funerals : a Challenge to Pastoral Care." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/46080.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with how the black township church leadership mismanage their defunct members especially at times of funerals. In the absence of a pragmatic pastoral method of how to deal with defunct members when they die, the church has devised a church policy which adds to the already experienced pain and grief of mourners. The criteria in the policy stipulates that, if at the time of death, the member has become defunct with regard to: - Church attendance, - Dedicated giving ( tithing ), the person should be given a stoep funeral. The problem with this policy, is the manner in which it is communicated to mourners - cold and insensitive, loaded with arrogance and rigidity. Cases are not viewed on merit but mourners are being emotionally and spiritually destroyed by this practice. Stoep funerals have developed a negative stigma in the townships since everyone is aware of the punishment being meted out to the deceased. Because of their alleged dysfunctionality , defunct members gets treated like spiritual criminals by the leadership through the refusal of church funerals. Church funerals are reserved for those who are in good standing and who enjoy implacable status in the church in relation to the mentioned criteria. The priest is expected to conduct church funerals while the lay ministers are assigned to do stoep funerals. A stoep funeral is an embarrassment and it leaves mourners with feelings of rejection and shame, if not truamatization. The aim of this research is to assist the township church to journey with her defunct members in creating a model directed by scriptural truth from a perspective of African pastoral care.

Abstract:
The thesis considers the changing nature of funerals carried in England over the last twenty years and a possible response by Church of England ministers. Those changes are outlined in terms of the changes in venue of funerals, the changes in content and the changes in officials conducting funerals. As a theological basis for a response, the thesis examines the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar, and in particular his book Mysterium Paschale. Balthasar considers each of the three days of Easter in turn, finding particular power and importance in Holy Saturday. It is this weight that he gives to the day in which Jesus is actually dead that is important in forming a liturgical response in the carrying out of funerals. One commentator describes a Christian funeral as a remembrance of an individual’s death in the context of the Easter event: key to what we do as Christian ministers is remind people of the hope that we have because of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. However, whilst the proclamation of the meaning of Easter Sunday is vital in any Christian funeral, just as important is a taking seriously of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These days remind us of the importance of grief and mourning in funerals. The thesis examines both the formal and informal content of funerals conducted by church ministers in England today to see how they give an appropriate understanding of the death and resurrection of Christ. The appropriate liturgical response to mourning is lament and, having considered how the three days of Easter are reflected in the actual content of the funeral, the final chapter considers the biblical notion of lament and how it may provide resources for funeral ministry.

Abstract:
This study examines the illustrations that appear at the Office of the Dead in English Books of Hours, and seeks to understand how text and image work together in this thriving culture of commemoration to say something about how the English understood and thought about death in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Office of the Dead would have been one of the most familiar liturgical rituals in the medieval period, and was recited almost without ceasing at family funerals, gild commemorations, yearly minds, and chantry chapel services. The Placebo and Dirige were texts that many people knew through this constant exposure, and would have been more widely known than other 'death' texts such as the Ars Moriendi. The images that are found in these books reflect wider trends in the piety and devotional practice of the time. The first half of the study discusses the images that appear in these horae, and the relationship between the text and image is explored. The funeral or vigil scene, as the most commonly occurring, is discussed with reference to contemporary funeral practices, and ways of reading a Book of Hours. Other iconographic themes that appear in the Office of the Dead, such as the Roman de Renart, the Pety Job, the Legend of the Three Living and the Three Dead, the story of Lazarus, and the life of Job, are also discussed. The second part of the thesis investigates the musical elaborations of the Office of the Dead as found in English prayer books. The Office of the Dead had a close relationship with music, which is demonstrated through an examination of the popularity of musical funerals and obits, as well as in the occurrence of musical notation for the Office in a book often used by the musically illiterate. The development of the Office of the Dead in conjunction with the development of the Books of Hours is also considered, and places the traditions and ideas that were part of the funeral process in medieval England in a larger historical context.

Letšosa, Rantoa Simon. "A relevant liturgy for the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands / Rantoa Simon Letšosa." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/697.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most important yet most undermined aspects of the Reformed Churches in the resort of Synod Midlands is its liturgy. Little study has been done on liturgy and few Church Councils make liturgy their concern. Consequently most of the Reformed Churches in Midlands are faced with the problem of syncretism, secularism and modernistic trends in the liturgy. All human beings are religious people. All humans beings are believers yet it depends whom and how people worship and in whom or what they believe. People have different cultures and in some instances, as is the case with the African religion, culture and religion are not easily separated. Liturgy has an indispensable task in transforming culture. This study aims at scrutinising the manner of worship in Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands. It is divided into three sections. The first section focuses on basic-theoretical principles, the second on meta-theoretical guidelines and empirical findings and the third on a critical-hermeneutical interaction between the basis-theoretical principles and the meta-theoretical guidelines. This study indicates that the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands need a relevant liturgy that is suitable for the African members but also a liturgy that is not easily influenced by culture and by the world. Liturgy has to shape culture and culture has to be accommodated in the shape that liturgy takes. This does not occur at the same level. The gospel preaches to culture and leads it to repentance. The sermon, however, is presented within a certain culture, context and language. This is where culture fits in and contributes to the shaping of the liturgy. A relevant liturgy for the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands would be a dynamic liturgy that displays an interactive communicative character. There has to be a dialogue between God and His children. The liturgist should not be an individual standing between God and humans, blocking the dialogue-related character of the liturgy. All members have to be participative and should follow the liturgy. This study therefore calls upon a free liturgy because African people are spontaneous. However this liturgy should also be characterized by the necessary order.

Abstract:

Morales, Teresa F. "The Last Stone is Just the Beginning: A Rhetorical Biography of Washington National Cathedral." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2013. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_diss/42.

Full text
Abstract:
Washington National Cathedral sits atop Mt. St. Alban’s hill in Washington, D.C. declaring itself the nation’s cathedral and spiritual home for the nation. The idea of a national church serving national purposes was first envisioned by L’Enfant in the District’s original plan. Left aside in the times of nation building, the idea of a national church slumbered until 1893 when a group of Episcopalians petitioned and received a Congressional charter to begin a church and school in Washington, D.C. The first bishop of Washington, Henry Y. Satterlee, began his bishopric with the understanding that this cathedral being built by the Protestant Episcopal Church Foundation was to be a house of prayer for all people. Using Jasinksi’s constructivist orientation to reveal the one hundred year rhetorical history defining what constitutes a “national cathedral” within the narrative paradigm first established by Walter Fisher, this work utilizes a rhetorical biographical approach to uncover the various discourses of those speaking of and about the Cathedral. This biographical approach claims that Washington National Cathedral possesses an ethos that differentiates the national cathedral from the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul even though the two names refer to the same building. The WNC ethos is one that allows a constant “becoming” of a national cathedral, and this ability to “become” allows for a rhetorical voice of the entity we call Washington National Cathedral. Four loci of rhetorical construction weave through this dissertation in the guiding question of how the Cathedral rhetorically created and how it sustains itself as Washington National Cathedral: rhetoric about the Cathedral, the Cathedral as rhetoric, the Cathedral as context, and Cathedral Dean Francis Sayre, Jr. as synecdoche with the Cathedral. This dissertation is divided into eight rhetorical moments of change that take the idea of a national church from L’Enfant’s 1791 plan of the City through the January 2013 announcement allowing same-sex weddings at the Cathedral and Obama’s second inaugural prayer service. The result of this rhetorical exploration is a more nuanced understanding of the place and how it functions in an otherwise secular society for which there is no precedent for the establishment of a national cathedral completely separated from the national government. The narrative strains that wind through Cathedral discourse create a braid of text, context, and moral imperative that ultimately allows for the unique construction of Washington National Cathedral, a construction of what defines “national” created entirely by the Cathedral.

Abstract:
Early Middle Ages represents a pivotal moment in which frameworks inherited from Antiquity coexist with the gradual establishment of a new ordo, in close relation with the setting up of an ecclesiastical order. Rural churches rapidly become places of competition between the elites, acting as intermediaries between God and men, media of social recognition and control over local populations. In the Romanized countryside of south-western Gaul, the genesis of these buildings is often related to the past, since they appear to have been founded on the site of Gallo-roman settlements, whose structures and materials they may eventually re-use. The present research proposes to approach this question from the point of view of representations. This allows us to free ourselves from the traditional historiography, oscillating between the study of the processes of Christianization and the pragmatic appeal of antique ruins, by engaging in a dialogue between written and archaeological sources. The aim is to analyse the discourses of filiation to the past over a long period of time, with regards to the stakes involved in the building of the first Christian places of worship, and through the cross-referenced reflection on the actors and location of these foundations. The present study takes into consideration places of worship, but also funerary areas, which constitute the main elitist testimonies that can be identified in the areas of the former city-dioceses of Bordeaux, Bazas and Agen. It is based on a corpus of about a hundred sites, spread along the strategic Garonne-Dordogne axis, on the edge of the Frankish kingdom

Because of their Chinese background, many Chinese people have preconceived notions of the Christian faith. Many Chinese feel that Christianity and the traditional Chinese belief of heavenly worship and remembering ancestors are contradictory. This contradiction negatively affects or destroys the Chinese desire to worship God. In addition, many do not hold the correct concepts of Christianity. These factors cause Christianity and traditional Confucian beliefs to contradict. Therefore, Chinese ancestry worship is the largest stumbling block to the spread of Christianity. During their contact with the Chinese, many Christian missionaries discovered that Chinese people who don't know Christianity are already against the gospel because of deep rooted bias, as stemming from cultural beliefs, to the point that they are hostile against churches. When someone accepts the gospel, they face opposition from their family. The main reason is because of ancestor worship. When the gospel spread from the west, it combined Western philosophy and Western thought, so that the whole gospel was full of Western ideas. The spread of this Westernized gospel in a country with five thousand years of history faced direct conflict with Chinese culture. Both countries maintained their belief of racial superiority, and thus the Chinese were offended by the way the Western gospel seemed to undermine their practices, namely ancestry worship and funeral practices. Chinese antagonism complicated Christian evangelism. Christian funeral practices clashed with Chinese culture and ideas. The conflict continued as the gospel reached Taiwan. Even though there have been many years of adaptations and changes to Western cultural infiltration, there are still many obstacles to the spread of Christianity. The Northern, Central, and Southern regions of Taiwan each possess rooted Buddhist beliefs - all differing. Not only so, local custom and view of funeral practices; the central idea of ancestry worship; Chinese ideas of life and death; the idea of gods and spirits; and daily horoscopes on food, clothing, shelter, weddings, and funerals all contradict the core values of Christianity. If Christianity wants to effectively spread throughout Taiwan and among Hakka churches, how can it reconcile, combine, and adjust to Taiwanese culture without losing basic Christian values? How can it replace traditional Hakka funeral practices? These are worthy points of discussion.

Abstract In my work as a funeral director I have found that many Catholic Church funeral practices have similarities to Taiwanese customs. This study uses historical material and interviews to investigate and understand Catholic funeral services in Taiwan as they adapt to Taiwan customs and culture. Spanish Catholic missionaries first came to northern Taiwan in 1626. In 1642,after the Dutch occupation, they were arrested and deported to Indonesia. In 1859,over 158 years ago, three Catholic Spanish Dominican missionaries from Amoy on mainland China came to Kaohsiung to establish the Catholic Church. In 1952 Father Joseph McDonald of the Maryknoll Society came to Ching Shui to establish a parish church. The Ching Shui church was built in 1960(the 49th year of the Republic of China). Why would they choose to go to remote villages to preach and get along with the people there? Where do they get the strength to go to a foreign country and help the people there? These priests simply enter into a strange country, learn different languages(Taiwanese,Hakka,Mandarin or Taiwan indigenous),because of God's call, and they learn from the traditional culture of the country. Human relations are essential especially as it affects traditional beliefs and local customs. The Church accompanies people in important aspects of life such as birth, old age, sickness and death. Church people care when others are ill or in danger of death. They will help with the funeral mass arrangements and ceremonies. Chinese custom uses ancestral tablets and has Tomb Sweeping Day (清明節) in April . The Catholic Church has All Souls Day in November to pray for the dead and allows the offering of incense, flowers and fruit which accords with Chinese custom. Wustenberg, Michael. "The big things bowed : the community ministry of Catholic funeral leaders in a rural South African context." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16502.

Full text
Abstract:
Funeral leaders share the ministry of comfort with others. They make a specific religious contribution towards restoring life or decontaminating from death, which affects the faith and hope of the bereaved. Their ministry responds to a need of the bereaved by affirming community in the face of death. It is based on spirituality and grounded in the biblical and apostolic tradition; it is carried out in a catholic contextualisation. The leaders' insertion into both the cultural background and the religious realm encourages contextualisation. Their verbal proclamation is done in various ways and is linked to ritual. It reflects the three dimensions of the model employed in pastoral theology by taking life seriously, interpreting it in the light of faith, and leading a celebration that opens up the future of the participants. The leaders' proclamation is sincere when they link cultural family-procedures and church rituals in a parallel way. Sincerity suffers when community leaders, used to provide a comprehensive service, cannot preside over the promised celebration of the Eucharist, which could be the culmination of the rite of passage. Their ministry remains incomplete because of factors beyond their control. It nevertheless contributes to justice in many ways, in particular by deploying local people. While the ministry is carried out independently, it depends on collaboration with the pastoral staff, in particular the priests. They safeguard the quality of ministry by formation and through supervision. The collaborative formation contributes to the cultural insertion of the local and expatriate staff and enhances their competence. This collaborative ministry serves the bereaved, the community of faith, and theology. It allows the development of a contextualised liturgy, and a local theology. It is a step forward on the road towards a genuine form of community ministry in this particular African context. It corresponds with contemporary secular approaches towards leadership and management. African approaches emphasise the need for contextualised management forms. They assume the compatibility of different practices employed in different contexts. The comprehensively grounded ministry seems to contribute to the avoidance or overcoming of some of the grave shortcomings of ministry as provided in the past.

he diploma thesis "Christian Church Funeral Ceremonies" deals with Roman Catholic Church funeral ceremonies, both preceding and following the Second Vatican Council reforms, Greek Catholic Church funeral ceremonies and those of Eastern Orthodox Church, Czechoslovak Hussite Church and Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. It describes various ceremonies and their historical development. By means of comparing the structures of these ceremonies it attempts to find what they have in common as well as what makes them distinctively different in terms of liturgy and theological teaching. It examines the theme of death, after-life conceptions, and funeral ceremonies in life of ancient people and European pagans, Jewish tradition and culture of Middle ages. It also covers the area of the last things of a man and resurrection matter as far as it is mentioned in liturgical books. Finally it questions the suitability of available liturgical texts concerning special cases and new forms of funeral ceremonies. 10 Abstract The Development of Funeral Practices in the Context of the Evolution of Ideological framework of the Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church. Author: Mgr. Richard Ferčík Our work resulted in finding that since the very beginning of its existence, the Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church approached the question of funeral rituals as a practical, pastoral question, not academic and theoretical. The Czechoslovak Church became a pioneer and promoter of cremation and operator of the most extensive network of columbaries in Czechoslovakia. The major moment of Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church particulars was the shift from the mechanical-magical concept of funeral in popular Catholicism, by which it tried to confront with a purified and understandable ritual based on the gospel and the desire to enculturate the gospel and translate it into a "live" language. Judging by the theological view of death and funeral, the basis from which it stemmed is quite clear - catholic modernism and liberal democratic thinking. In the first generation of Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church theologians we could observe significant "scholastic" fundament. Theological consideration was never priority in these matters, but the church only dealt with it when solving complex tasks. It was not until the middle of 1940s, when the Copernical Revolution...

Abstract:
The main goal of this investigation was to characterize paleodemographically and paleopathological an osteological sample composed of 36 individuals: 21 identified in primary inhumations and 15 recovered from ossuaries. Of these, 22 individuals were classified as non-adults, and 14 as adults (nine males and four females). These individuals were exhumed near the old Divino Espírito Santo church in Almeirim and will have a chronology between the XV and the XVIII century. The main age range is newborn (0-3 years old) followed by adults (>35 years old). Regarding the ancestry, only one individual in the sample was found to be of African ancestry. It was also performed the morphological analysis, from which it was estimated the stature, consistency and flattening index and identified the presence/absence of discrete traits.Regarding the oral pathologies, we verified ante mortem tooth loss in four adults. It was also observed tooth decay in 56,3% (9/16) , calculus in 40,0% (6/15) , dental wear in 73,3% (11/15) and periodontal disease in 50,0% (2/4) of the individuals. What’s more, we observed three cases of permanent impacted canines and the existence of articular pathology in 57,1% (4/7) of the individuals. About the spine, bone growth and Schmorl nodules were observed in 28,6% (2/7) of the individuals. Entheseal changes were observed in all cases studied, being more frequent in the bones from the right side. It was also observed that two adult males presented traumatic injuries. Regarding the congenital pathologies, there was one case of spina bifida in one infant and another of sacralization in one adult male. Finally, regarding physiologic stress indicators, there were eleven cases of cribra orbitalia, followed by seven cases of cribra femoralis (two adult males and five non adults) and two cases of cribra humeralis.Taking into account these results, we can conclude that necessary studies are needed, namely, DNA analysis.
