The impact of COVID-19 on the capacity to hold face-to-face meetings meant that the normal pattern of synods and assemblies in 2020 was almost totally disrupted. The Church of England's General Synod met in the normal way from 10 to 13 February, but the July group of sessions, which is normally held in York, was reduced to an ‘informal virtual meeting’ on 11 July. This thesis examines the importance Kentucky's religious denominations played in the development and transformation of early Kentucky (1770's to 1830). This thesis will show that though federal and regional governments may have created the laws that established newly opened territories, it was often the denominations that played an important role in the creation of that community and stability of the wider societies. Beginning with camp meetings this thesis will argue that denominations began the process of creating community by actively placing these meetings outside the bounds of early congr

This chapter examines the issue of absenteeism in seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century gathered churches through their manuscript church records. Absenteeism was the offence most frequently cited in disciplinary meetings, yet some members who were censured for absence were active supporters of their churches in other ways. This chapter focuses on those members who were never under a sentence of excommunication but who had ceased to be involved in church life and to take communion. It examines the question of Dissenting identity through lay participation, the reasons why men and women ceased to come to church, and what prompted them to seek reconciliation, sometimes decades after their first admission. Evidence is taken from manuscript church records belonging to Congregational, Particular Baptist, and General Baptist churches, spanning the period c.1640 to c.1714.

Abstract:
The transition from underground family gathering to meetings in formal church buildings after the Cultural Revolution was a dramatic passage in the history of Christianity in Rui’an and Wenzhou. It generated both prosperity and chaos. Many Protestant leaders adopted a pragmatic stance toward the re-established Three-Self Church, allowing Protestant communities to take full advantage of their status as a “regulatory priority.” By contrast, Catholic communities could not do so because of their persistent refusal to collaborate with the government. Yet the loosening political and institutional environment was a mixed blessing for the Protestant Church. The government’s accommodating attitude toward formal church meetings considerably accelerated the construction, restitution, and legalization of churches, old and new. But the reappearance of the Three-Self Church tested the fragile unity that the churches had achieved during the Cultural Revolution. Protestant communities were torn apart by schisms at every level, from pan-denominational organizations to small village churches.

Abstract:
Abstract The General Meetings, which the Coptic canticles inaugurate, well examplify the way in which the new and old mesh to create traditions. Pope Shenuda first called these meetings” Dars” (Lesson). This at one and the same time underlined their innovative character, by distinguishing them from the religious sermon, and created a tradition, by emphasizing their continuity with the pedagogical mission of the founder of the Sunday School Movement, the by then “resting” I:Iabib Jirjis. (Pious Copts never use the word dead; they say itnayah, “he rested.”) Thus, we can see how new traditions are fashioned, as the rapid transformation of society weakens the social patterns for which the “old” traditions had been designed. The sermon itself was at one time an innovation for the Coptic Church. Prior to its adoption, by the Sunday School generation in the 1940s, the Coptic Church was limited to the celebration of mass.

This chapter discusses the First Baptist Church of Covert, New York, which was founded in 1803 and grew steadily from then. It recounts the meetings of the society's trustees, which included managing the church's finances and the appointment of individuals to fill necessary roles. It also mentions that the society's business was related to membership matters, such as admitting new Baptists to the church and dismissing others from fellowship. The chapter features the excerpt from the trustees' minute book from 1832 and 1833, which is considered an example of the type of issues addressed by the trustees of Baptist churches in the region. It includes an entry of the minute book detailing how the First Baptist Church of Covert met by special appointment on January 7, 1832.

This chapter focuses on the vehicle of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s social gospel: the mass meeting. The mass meeting was born in Montgomery, Alabama, with the December 5, 1955 rally at the Holt Street Baptist Church. From the beginning, the meetings served an indivisibly sacred and civic agenda. At Holt, the throng listened to Bible readings, sang “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” and took courage from a sermonic speech by the young Dr. King. The mass meetings held throughout the South also served to solidify a sense of community among participants. The meetings provided a continuous social commentary on fast-breaking events, a forum for information and tactical planning, a school for correction and instruction in nonviolence, a place of praise and encouragement, but, most of all, a way of keeping together.

Abstract A few weeks after I had started to attend church meetings at the JG, Brother Horváth asked me to teach score reading to the congregation. I was surprised, since I had explained my goal of researching the church’s music in a letter to him. At first I believed he simply had not understood what I intended to do as an ethnographer by interviewing church members and attending services. I later came to see his request as an indication that there were contrasting conceptions of leadership in the church community. I had anticipated a different challenge, crossing the divide between believer and nonbeliever.

In winter 1969, the Young Lords recited scripture, channeled the revolutionary Jesus, and occupied the First Spanish United Methodist Church for its indifference to social violence, which combined with its promises of happiness in the hereafter, they argued, cloaked a project of social control. Rechristened, The People’s Church, the Lords’ prefigurative politics and project included a free medical clinic and redress of community grievances and needs, from housing evictions to English translation at parent-teacher meetings. Their hot morning meals to poor school-aged children became what is now the federal school breakfast program. As antidote to the erasure of culture and history that accompanied colonization and slavery in the Americas, they sponsored alternatives to public school curricula on the Puerto Rican independence movement, black American history, and current events. In the evening, they curated spurned elements of Afro-Puerto Rican culture and music performed by underground Nuyorican Poets and new genres of cultural expression, among them the spoken word poetry jam, a precursor to hip hop. They served revolutionary analysis with Mutual Aid. Their daily press conferences created a counternarrative to representations of Puerto Ricans as junkies, knife-wielding thugs, and welfare dependents that replaced traditional stereotypes with powerful images of eloquent, strategic, and candid Puerto Rican resistance.
