Abstract:
The Church of Scotland, from which Episcopalians had departed in 1690, and Covenanters shortly thereafter, suffered further division in the eighteenth century. The Seceders broke off in 1733 and the Relief Presbytery in 1752. The Seceders split into Burghers and Anti-Burghers in 1747, and at the close of that century each of these bodies divided into New Light and Old Light. The Old Lights found their way back into the mainstream by means which need not concern us, while the two New Light bodies united in 1820 and in 1847 joined with the Relief Church to form the United Presbyterian Church.

In the article the author analyzes the process of the formation of the external state monopoly of the candle trade I Russia against the background of the description of the sacral light place in the church liturgical space and eastern Christian mysticism. The author describes the so-called “church-light” operation based on the lending rate and meant to secure stable modernization process in Russia through spiritual educational institutions. Ht claims that candle standardization destroyed the personalistic aspect of the church symbolism and the divine service interpretation by the believers. The author shows how the external state monopoly of the candle trade lead, through the system of candle factories foundation, to the economic dependence of Russian Orthodox Church on international monopoly. The article also deals with the restoration of the church liturgical space usefulness in the time of the “wax crisis” during the First World War through the organization of public singing after service.

Oscar Romero’s homilies on the transfiguration of Jesus offer a unique window into his way of reading Scripture as a churchman seeking to bring the gospel to bear on his historical moment. For Romero, the light that shone in the face of Jesus on the mountain must shine through the church in the dark places of the world as the church follows the same road as its Lord: the road that ends in glory but first endures the cross.

Abstract:
Rapid growth in the field of management science in recent decades has resulted in a plethora of resources for leadership and management in the Church. How should ecclesiologists respond to this trend? This essay highlights the importance of a theologically-grounded approach to managing church organisations. In particular, it examines a foundational document in the Catholic tradition from the Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, to draw implications for evaluating church organisations. Most studies on Lumen Gentium have focused on one or other aspect of its multiply-rich content. This analysis, however, on the recent 50th anniversary of the document’s promulgation in November 1964, recaps its overall message through a triple hermeneutics of author, text and receiver and brings this message into dialogue with the modern-day challenge of managing church organisations. It will be proposed that the real fruitfulness of these organisations depends on the extent to which they manifest the Church’s nature and mission as a sacrament of salvation for the world. The implications of this are then translated into a framework for evaluating church organisations.

Abstract:
In this paper we offer a detailed analysis of the extent, direction and evolution of ministerial stipend cross subsidies at differing levels of granularity in the United Free Church of Scotland between 1909 and 1929; from the Church's establishment of a single Central Fund, to its union with the Church of Scotland. By focussing on aggregate flows of money in support of the Church's key employees, we throw new light not only on the question of the extent to which the United Free Church's national provision of the ordinances of religion was dependant on financial transfers, but also the wider challenge of bringing two culturally distinct ecclesiastical bodies together. 1

Abstract:
AbstractThe imagery of light plays a key role in Basil of Caesarea’s narrative of God and salvation. Curiously, the communal aspects of this imagery have received little attention in scholarship. A systematic analysis of “De Spiritu Sancto” reveals that in Basil’s understanding, participation in divine light functions as a parallel concept to Church membership. To begin with, the corporate nature of participation in divine light is evident from the ecclesial rites of initiation whereby this participation is bestowed. Furthermore, Basil uses the imagery of light to underscore the corporate nature of both the mystical union between God and the baptized, and the outward expressions of the believers’ lives in the divine light: worship and public witness. In addition to shedding new light on the Basilian notion of Church membership, the study o#ers a fresh outlook into the ecumenical dialogue between the Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church bodies on the theology of initiation.

Abstract:
Major writers and painters of the Romantic period interpreted the church or cathedral in its organic and spiritual dimensions as a complex expression of a matured Christian civilization. Artists of the mid-nineteenth century continued to produce both secular and religious variations upon this established referentiality. Although divergent uses reciprocally reinforced the fascination for the central imagery of the church and its multiple contexts, they also came to suggest a deeper tension in Western development between what the church had meant in an earlier Europe and what it might mean for late modernity. The threat of a permanent loss of cultural values was an issue haunting Realist approaches. A crucial revision occurred when key Symbolist poets openly revived the first Romantic themes but treated them as contents available to a decidedly post-Romantic historical consciousness. There was an analogous revival of interest in the church as a culturally charged symbol in painting around the turn of the century. Although they might apply this poetic and pictorial heritage in strikingly different ways, writers of high Modernism such as Rilke, Proust, and Kafka understood its richness and importance.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the ecclesiological tension caused by the nature of the Church as a singular and plural entity. As a singular entity, the Church is universal or catholic; in a plural designation, we speak of local or particular churches. The relationship between the universal and the local has generated many debates that have caused paradigm shifts within ecclesiology, from the hierarchical to the communio frameworks, and even synodality. In exploring these debates and their implications for some aspects of the legislative norms, as well as in the light of the contemporary conversations on synodality, the article address the theological question of the representative function of bishops. The evolution of the Synod of Bishops suggests that this long-running debate may be entering a new phase with the synodal processes that Pope Francis is promoting in the Church today.

Abstract:
A church performs many functions. It presents an image; prepares the believer for worship; introduces the unbeliever to God; facilitates worship services; projects the words of the pastor; resonates the music of the choir and orchestra; deepens knowledge and understanding of the faith; instructs children as well as adults; promotes fellowship; shelters the needy; hosts meetings; serves meals; strengthens families; supports missions and ministries; and accommodates weddings, funerals, and baptisms. These functions are performed in obedience to the Word of God. They are expressions of Scripture. In the past, the church building itself expressed Scripture. The cruciform plan of the great cathedrals was the most profound example, depicting the symbol of Christianity. Clerestory windows filled the vaulted heights above the nave with heavenly light. Mosaics, reliefs, icons and stained glass windows illustrated biblical stories. How else can the architecture of the church building express Scripture? How can Scripture inspire architecture?

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation on how in architecture structure and material modulate the perception of light. This idea was implemented in the design of a catholic church for the parish of Blacksburg,Virginia. The vision of the church as a community in constant interaction resulted in the design of a complex, in which the chapel is accompanied by a pre-school and a third building containing facilities for the administration of the parish and the residence for the priest. The plaza on which all the buildings have been arranged allows the opportunity for outdoor activities, as well as the contemplation of the beautiful ever-changing views of the mountains that surround the church. The difference in the nature of the activities that take place in each one of the buildings has been expressed through the way structure and materials interact with the natural light producing a distinctive interior quality.

Abstract:
The use of light has always been a vehicle of symbolic meaning and spiritual experience in religious spaces. Depending on culture and religion this use differs, but in any case, the connection between the built form, the architecture and the history makes the relationship with light a compelling issue that is worth exploring. This thesis aims to study the role that light played in the designing of St: Eskilskyrkan church in Sweden, and the way it affected the perception of the architecture and its materials. In order to answer this question, a methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative methods, was generated. Evaluation and discussion of literature review, interviews, survey on perception of light, a comparison between two similar buildings, daylight analysis using lighting software and testing lighting design tools are the key elements to create the guidelines for the lighting design proposal that will be generated in the last part of the thesis. This proposal aims to redevelop the existing illumination of the interior of the church, emphasizing on functionality, on the built form and the enhancement of spiritual experience.

Abstract:
Magister Theologiae - MTh
Taking the recent history and the present situation of South Africa as my context, I have found that with regard to their ethical stance the Lutheran Church has been accused of taking the "cheap grace" (anti-nomian) option and the Reformed Churches have often been criticised (especially by Lutherans, although recently also by some of their own theologians e.g. Johan Cilliers, 1994) for propagating the salvation by "works of the law" (semi-pelagian) option. Both the above "accusations" need to be critically verified by an analysis of the two theologies and their functioning in South Africa. This analysis will be done by using sermons from both churches as its empirical basis. I have decided to use seven sermons from each tradition. The Lutheran ones were brought together by directly contacting my colleagues and asking them to help me in this project by sending their sermons (especially on Exodus 20, if possible) to me. The Reformed sermons used are taken from published sermon collections available in South Africa.

Abstract Temperature-dependent die warpage measurements show the possibility to analyze the thermomechanical behavior during assembly, e.g. within soldering processes. The warpage data acquisition is realized by confocal chromatic white light profilometry in combination with a precision heating/cooling chuck encapsulated in a chamber with optical access. The combination of these two tools allows precise die warpage evaluation under varied device temperature up to +400°C. This method helps to solve emerging challenges due to warpage during assembly of state of the art packages including thin dies and stacked dies as in e.g. 3D-SIPs.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present experimental results of process monitoring and process control in automatic assembly of minilenses in front of a miniature flexible fiberscope. For the purpose of process visualization and process control, an LED light source, a grating and a micrometer screw are compacted together in a vacuum gripper. A positioning system, a fiber chuck, a mimilens magazine and a fiberscope have been installed in the system and an image processing algorithm for process control has been developed. The optical design and assembly process are presented here in details. The projection of an illuminated grating through the minilens on the fiberscope is used to position the minilens automatically by an image processing unit and the motion system. The position system has a minimum step size of 5 μm in translation and 0.01° by rotation. The repeatability of the translation stages is about ±2.5 μm. It is shown from the experimental results that the tilt axial angle between the optical axis of the minilens and the geometrical axis of the fiberscope is less than 4°.

Abstract:
The cutting performance of the PZT/Si wafer micro milling was investigated by using the diamond coated micro end mill. At the same time, the cutting force and AE signals collected during cutting were also investigated to identify their capability of monitoring the surface condition and ductile/brittle cutting mode. To analyze the cutting performance of PZT thin film and corresponding signals, an experiment was conducted on a micro-machining equipment with resolution of 1 um. The PZT thin film with thickness of around 1 um was deposited on the Si wafer by a Sol-Gel method. During cutting, the AE signal was collected by an AE sensor clamped on the top of wafer, and the cutting force was collected by a Kistler 9256C dynamometer installed under a vacuum chuck. After the cutting, the finished surface was investigated by a white light interferometer system, and the chip was also investigated by a scanning electronic microscopic (SEM). The results show that the while light interferometer can be used to identify the cracked spot on the bottom of the machined surface. For the cutting mode analysis, the ductile mode cutting cannot be reached for the PZT thin film machining in this study. However, it can be obtained for Si wafer at the same cutting condition. Moreover, the RMS cutting force for PZT machining is higher than the Si wafer machining and its surface finish is not as good as in cutting the pure Si wafer. In analyzing the collected AE and cutting force signals, the AE signal, the time domain cutting force signals, and the RMS cutting force signals demonstrate their high correlation with the ductile/brittle cutting mode and surface condition.

Abstract:
The 5 Russian Arctic Seas have common features, but differ significantly from each other in the sea ice regime and navigation specifics. Navigation in the Arctic is a big challenge, especially during the winter season. However, it is necessary, due to limited natural resources elsewhere on Earth that may be easier for exploitation. Therefore sea ice is an important issue for future development. We foresee that the Arctic may become ice free in summer as a result of global warming and even light yachts will be able to pass through the Eastern Passage. There have been several such examples in the last years. But sea ice is an inherent feature of Arctic Seas in winter, it is permanently immanent for the Central Arctic Basin. That is why it is important to get appropriate knowledge about sea ice properties and operations in ice conditions. Four seas, the Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, and Chukchi have been examined in the book “Russian Arctic Seas. Navigation Condition and Accidents”, Marchenko, 2012 [1]. The book is devoted to the eastern sector of the Arctic, with a description of the seas and accidents caused by heavy ice conditions. The traditional physical-geographical characteristics, information about the navigation conditions and the main sea routes and reports on accidents that occurred in the 20th century have reviewed. An additional investigation has been performed for more recent accidents and for the Barents Sea. Considerable attention has been paid to problems associated with sea ice caused by the present development of the Arctic. Sea ice can significantly affect shipping, drilling, and the construction and operation of platforms and handling terminals. Sea ice is present in the main part of the east Arctic Sea most of the year. The Barents Sea, which is strongly influenced and warmed by the North Atlantic Current, has a natural environment that is dramatically different from those of the other Arctic seas. The main difficulties with the Barents Sea are produced by icing and storms and in the north icebergs. The ice jet is the most dangerous phenomenon in the main straits along the Northern Sea Route and in Chukchi Seas. The accidents in the Arctic Sea have been classified, described and connected with weather and ice conditions. Behaviour of the crew is taken into consideration. The following types of the ice-induced accidents are distinguished: forced drift, forced overwintering, shipwreck, and serious damage to the hull in which the crew, sometimes with the help of other crews, could still save the ship. The main reasons for shipwrecks and damages are hits of ice floes (often in rather calm ice conditions), ice nipping (compression) and drift. Such investigation is important for safety in the Arctic.

Abstract:
Three dwellings of the Old Bering Sea culture, well-preserved in the permafrost at the ancient Eskimo settlement of Paipelghak (Chukchi Sea coast), were investigated for the first time. They are situated at the same stratigraphic level which is superimposed by two-chamber house of the Birnirk period. Small structures built on the surface, rectangular in shape with a floor made of stone and wood are similar in design. The walls are reinforced with vertical posts made of fin wood and jaw bones of whales. Dwellings had corridor exits faced toward the sea. Light roofs made from animal skins were fixed on a wooden frame. At the floor level of the dwellings abundant materials were found with clear dating characteristics. These are different tips of the harpoon heads, details of harpoon set and other items with the decor of the Old Bering Sea culture II. The sedentary Eskimos of Chukotka have a single line of development of dwellings from the first half of the first millennium AD (the Old Bering Sea culture, the Birnirk period) until the first half of the XX century, when the village of Naukan with traditional dwellings was closed.

Abstract:
In 1984 the Travesías was incorporated as a preponderant activity in the study plan for all the Architecture and Design workshops at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso from Chile. The voyages are study tours of professors and students whose purpose is to build together a work of design construction and light duration somewhere in America. The equation of the journey is always open: the place, the number of resources and impediments make it an adventure. But it is not an adventure without measure, but that of allowing ourselves to be surprised by some dimension of America that we do not know or believe we know, and then we feel in direct experience. The Travesías project constitutes the last of the inventions of the school, which, together with the Phalène, Ciudad Abierta and the churches built by the Work Workshops in the south of Chile, has been developing to fulfil the vision of inhabiting this American continent. It was to realize a utopia, of itself the unrealizable. However, the saying of poetry and the doing of design propose the fit of life, work, and study. The first step was forty years ago with the founding of the Institute of Architecture, and ten years ago, the passage of the e Travesías that go out to tour the continent. These steps are not intermediaries for other purposes; if not so that our days are simultaneous to our work, and thus, we reach the present. After almost 20 years of experiencing these Travesías, we still ask ourselves about our poetic destiny as a vision of this America not discovered but founded as a gift. The journey, unlike the class in the classroom, incorporates the life of the student, their customs and social ties, as well as their personal characteristics, values, attitudes and knowledge of life. This can only be appreciated and evidenced through uprooting pedagogy in the classroom. Then, once the student is subjected to an extraordinary life regime, it will be precisely his most intimate thoughts and actions that will remain in all evidence, a situation that is difficult to obtain in the traditional and regulated structure that constitutes teaching in the classroom to this day. This presentation illustrates the last Design Travesía, held in November of the present year and the continuous question about our global south.

Abstract:
The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.

Collyer, Michael, and Laura Hammond. Migrants on the margins final report. Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55203/jtld8758.

Full text
Abstract:
Migrants on the margins was a five-year collaborative field research project that investigated the movement of migrants into and around four of the world’s most pressured cities: Colombo in Sri Lanka, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Harare in Zimbabwe and Hargeisa in Somaliland. Supported by the Society, the research team adopted a comparative approach to look at the opportunities available to migrants in order to better understand their experiences and vulnerabilities. Research in the four cities engaged with both newly arrived and well-established residents of 13 neighbourhoods, and involved focus groups, surveys, walk along interviews, oral histories, Q methodology, and GIS and participatory community mapping workshops. The key findings from the project have shed light on the incredible challenges of living in the neighbourhoods studied as well as the significant levels of population mobility, or churn, within these communities. The research also highlights the impact of clear gender differences in men’s and women’s roles in communities, as well as the effect of evictions and tenure security on residents, and how people can easily become ‘trapped’ within these neighbourhoods. Results from the research are continuing to influence policy within the four cities, and the research team have worked to support local policy makers and municipalities to improve the situations that migrants find themselves in.
