The article examines Sophia the Wisdom of God as a religious phenomenon, a marker of the Eastern Christian tradition and Ukrainian culture. The article analyzes the eighteenth-century baroque mural ensemble of Sophia of Kyiv in an interdisciplinary context: it provides an interpretation of the iconic subjects and traces the continuity with the Old Ruthenian mural design. Despite the absence of a developed Sophia iconography, the image of Sophia in the mural paintings of the cathedral is realized through the theology “Sophia — Mary — Church” from the Great Oranta in the central altar (eleventh

But a reconsideration of the literary and archaeological evidence suggests that this was not the case. I argue here that a tale related by Gregory of Tours on the gilding of the roof of St. Polyeuktos reliably describes the church’s panelled wooden ceiling, and that the accou
