Full textThis work represents a part of polluted watercourses restoration by intensification of self-purification mechanisms essentially the degradation of organic matter and nitrogen. The main objective is to evaluate and model the air-water oxygen transfer by major hydraulic structures, namely stepped cascades and waterfalls. Aeration experiments conducted in a geometrically adjustable laboratory pilot, serving as stepped cascade and waterfall were used to assess the aeration potential of these structures as well as to study the geometrical an operating parameters effects. In a first approach, a global semi-empirical correlation for aeration efficiency calculation in stepped cascades, valid for a wide range of parameters, was developed, depending on water discharge, number of steps and chute slope, basing on our experimental measurements and data collected in publications. The same procedure was followed for developing a semi-empirical correlation to estimate the aeration efficiency of waterfalls in terms of the chute height, downstream water level and flowrate. In order to take into account the oxygen transfer phenomenon characteristics in stepped cascade (water volume and air-water exchange interfacial area), tracer experiments were associated with aeration experiments to allow measuring water volume and correlating the volume oxygen transfer coefficient kLa with the various parameters involved in the aeration mechanism. The interfacial specific area was numerically simulated using VOF approach depending on operating and geometrical parameters. A predictive equation for liquid film transfer coefficient kL calculation based on the parameters of influence was issued from both the simulations and experimental aeration measures

Full textThis experimental work in mesocosms examines the effects of various types of planktivorous fish on plankton communities in Dakar Bango, a shallow tropical reservoir used as drinking water supply of Saint Louis, Senegal. The in situ enclosure experiment analyses the effects of various stages (zooplanktivores fry, omnivores juveniles, adults herbivores, alone or combined) of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, during a filamentous cyanobacterial bloom (Anabaena spp. ). Fishes reduced strongly zooplankton biomass, but had minimal effects on phytoplankton, no matter planktivore type or biomass. Despite good growth, fishes did not control cyanobacteria. Thus, in meso-eutrophic tropical lakes, fish zooplanktivory may not cascade down to the phytoplankton when inedible species prevail. The bloom collapse may have resulted from self-shading related to density-dependence and resource competition for nutrients. The above ground tank experiment compares the relative magnitude of omnivory ('top-down') and excretion effects ('bottom-up') of filter feeding fish on phytoplankton dynamics. Fish presence had few effects, increasing cyanobacteria in vivo auto-fluorescence and some phytoplankton species biomasses, but reducing phosphorus concentration. Negative fish-mediated excretion effects compensated positive fish omnivory effects on cladocerans and cyanobacteria. These results illustrate how poorly edible phytoplankton species weaken trophic cascades induced by fishes, especially herbivores. They demonstrate the need for testing the generality of hypotheses and the relative importance of mechanisms based on ecological engineering when restoring eutrophic temperate lakes, so to improve the water quality management of shallow tropical lakes

Full textAfter describing the heterodox practice of reading of the early years. Michaux's meeting with Christian mysticism and natural science, I then intend to stress the importance of his often neglected literary debut (1922-1927), through a diachronic study. Between 1927 and 1945, a diversified writing of the self, refusing pathos and autobiographic confidence, means to be a transcription of the inner experience through any possible literary genre, and draws a diffracted self-portrait in the stories, travel books and poems. In the meantime, a poetics of expatriation is trying to find its own original way. Confronted with the monsters of history during the war, it will take new forms. In this study, I’ve paid particular attention to the rare and only once published texts, to the letters and aborted projects

Full textContext: Exercise programmes can prevent falls in older community-dwellers. However, evidence that these programmes can also prevent injurious falls was poor. Objectives : Systematic review of evidence of the effect of exercise interventions on injurious fall prevention from randomised controlled trials (RCT).Evaluate the effectiveness of ‘Ossébo’, a multi-centre RCT assessing the effectiveness of a 2-year injurious fall prevention balance training programme. Methods:Systematic reviewThe definitions of injurious falls from included studies were classified into more homogeneous categories. This allowed the estimation of a pooled rate ratio for each injurious falls category based on random effects models. Ossébo trial706 women aged 75-85 years ; home-living with diminished functional capacities were included. The 2 groups were compared for rates of injurious falls with a frailty model. Other outcomes included physical functional capacities, and quality of life indicators. Results:Systematic review17 trials involving 4305 participants were included. Four categories were identified: all injurious falls, falls resulting in medical care, severe injurious falls, and falls resulting in fractures. Exercise had a significant preventive effect in all categories.OsséboThere were 305 injurious falls in the intervention group and 397 in the control group, for a HR of 0.81 (0.67 to 0.99). At 2 years, women in the intervention group had significantly better performances on all physical tests and a better perception of their overall physical function. Conclusion:Fall prevention exercise programmes are effective in preventing injurious falls, and are feasible for long-term, wide-spread dissemination
