Full text
Abstract:
In order to contribute understanding of the biodiversity of seaweed-associated diatoms at Moen Island in Chuuk lagoon, Micronesia in the tropical western Pacific, we collected four macroalgae (Halimeda sp., Padina sp., Sargassum sp., Dictyota sp.) that were distributed throughout at 5 subtidal sites of reef flat. These are the first records of diatoms from Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. A total 148 taxa belonging to 30 families and 49 genera were briefly documented with the identification references, dimension and illustrations, but many taxa could only be identified to genus. There is much similarity to the flora of Guam, but 16 records are new for the region. Four nomenclatural changes were necessary in consequence of the findings of Ruck et al. (2016) on Surirellales and Rhopalodiales.

SummaryDuring a tourist cruise with M.V. Academik Shokalski from Cairns (Australia) to Chuuk (Micronesia) between 20 March and 3 April 1996 we visited a number of seabird islands in Micronesia described by Nelson (1978). On these and other islands visited, we asked local people for further information on breeding seabirds. After the cruise H.M. visited Ant Atoll at Pohnpei. This note presents the results. Time did not allow us to undertake real counts so we provide only rough estimates of numbers of breeding pairs, in orders of magnitude.

Abstract:
Twelve new sesterterpenes along with eight known sesterterpenes were isolated from the marine sponge Hyrtios erectus collected off the coast of Chuuk Island, the Federated State of Micronesia. Based upon a combination of spectroscopic and computational analyses, these compounds were determined to be eight glycine-bearing scalaranes (1–8), a 3-keto scalarane (9), two oxidized-furan-bearing scalaranes (10 and 11), and a salmahyrtisane (12). Several of these compounds exhibited weak antiproliferation against diverse cancer cell lines as well as moderate anti-angiogenesis activities. The antiproliferative activity of new compound 4 was found to be associated with G0/G1 arrest in the cell cycle.

Abstract:
AbstractThis discussion reviews the differences between traditional Micronesian principles regarding traditional knowledge, or ‘esoteric’ knowledge, and Western copyright laws, which have been used in the expropriation and legal alienation of traditional knowledge. We consider this conflict in relation to contemporary Native American intellectual property issues and tribal responses for the protection of such knowledge and to control research activities. This is compared with the recent international and Pacific Islands governments' concerns and actions regarding commodification and misappropriation of traditional knowledge, including the new Pacific Model Law. Finally, we review the nature of traditional knowledge in Chuuk State and its current status and recommend specific steps that the Federated States of Micronesia might take legislatively to protect traditional knowledge as part of its significant cultural heritage.

Abstract:
A new kinorhynch genus and species is described from coralline sand collected on the atoll of the Chuuk Islands, Micronesia. The new genus and species, Triodontoderes anulap gen. et sp. nov., is characterized by having an introvert with only five scalid rings, segment 1 consisting of one tergal and one sternal plate, segments 2 to 4 of one tergal and two sternal plates, and segments 5 to 11 of one tergal plate with midventral articulation. Triodontoderes anulap gen. et sp. nov. shares several characters with species of Zelinkaderes, including reduced number of scalid rings, distally tripartite placids, a trunk being circular in cross-section, and segments 5 to 10 being composed of a single tergal plate with midventral articulation. Until the kinorhynch relationships have been examined in a formal phylogenetic analysis, Triodontoderes gen. et sp. nov. are tentatively assigned to Zelinkaderidae.

Abstract:
Drug development using marine bioresources is limited even though the ocean occupies about 70% of the earth and contains a large number of biological materials. From the screening test of the marine sponge extracts, we foundHyrtiossp. sponge collected from Chuuk island, Micronesia. In this study, theHyrtiossp. extract was examined for anticancer activity against human colorectal carcinoma RKO cells that are wildtype for p53 and RKO-E6 that are p53 defective. TheHyrtiossp. extract dose-dependently inhibited viability in both cell lines. Multinucleation as an indication of mitotic catastrophe was also observed. Cytotoxicity tests gave significantly different results for RKO and RKO-E6 cells after 48 h exposure toHyrtiossp. extract. In RKO cells treated withHyrtiossp. extract, cell death occurred by induction of p53 and p21 proteins. In p53-defective RKO-E6 cells,Hyrtiossp. extract decreased expression of JNK protein and increased p21 protein. These results indicate thatHyrtiossp. extract induced apoptosisviadifferent pathways depending on p53 status and could be a good natural product for developing new anticancer drugs.

Abstract:
Could colonial settlers who repatriated from colonies to metropole after the empire’s fall be considered ‘diaspora’? How do these migrants of decolonization maintain their collective memory of the past and solidary identity as a group? This article explores the historical experiences of Okinawan colonial migrants to Japanese mandate Micronesia (which includes the Northern Marianas, Palau, and Chuuk) and these migrants’ forced repatriation to Okinawa after the devastating battles in the Western Pacific in 1944–45. It also ethnographically examines the Okinawan repatriates’ pilgrimages to the islands throughout the post-WWII years to visit their childhood homes and locations of their loved ones’ deaths. These Okinawan repatriates, who had been twice-displaced in their lifetimes and survived the brutal war, continue to visit the islands to reminisce about their childhood and pray for the loved ones who had died on the islands. This article argues that such migrants of decolonization could not only be considered a diasporic group but also a group who retain a strong sense of solidarity and collective memory. Further, this article claims that formal and informal ritualistic practices, such as those ethnographically portrayed in this essay, play a pivotal role in creating and recreating collective memory and identity among the migrants of decolonization as a diaspora.
