Abstract:

A new species of the genus Psalmocharias Kirkaldy, 1908, P. akesensis sp. nov., from Xinjiang, China is described. A key to all species of Psalmocharias is provided. This new species feeds on the medicinal plant Ephedra intermedia Schrenk ex Mey, which contains various medicinally active alkaloids (notably ephedrine) and stimulates the central nervous system and influence muscle contraction of animals. The discovery of this new species may be informative for future studies of the detoxification mechanism in insects and for the protection of this important medicinal plant.

Abstract:

Abstract Mitochondrial genomes can provide valuable information on the biology and evolutionary histories of their host organisms. Here, we present and characterize the complete coding regions of 107 mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of cicadas (Insecta: Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadoidea), representing 31 genera, 61 species, and 83 populations. We show that all cicada mitogenomes retain the organization and gene contents thought to be ancestral in insects, with some variability among cicada clades in the length of a region between the genes nad2 and cox1, which encodes 3 tRNAs. Phylogenetic analyses using these mitogenomes recapitulate a recent 5-gene classification of cicadas into families and subfamilies, but also identify a species that falls outside of the established taxonomic framework. While protein-coding genes are under strong purifying selection, tests of relative evolutionary rates reveal significant variation in evolutionary rates across taxa, highlighting the dynamic nature of mitochondrial genome evolution in cicadas. These data will serve as a useful reference for future research into the systematics, ecology, and evolution of the superfamily Cicadoidea.

Abstract:

In order to broaden our understanding about cicada diversity of northeastern India, a comprehensive survey was conducted in the year 2017, in Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya and an occasional opportunistic survey was carried out in northern West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. During these surveys, we came across four species of cicadas, viz., Meimuna duffelsi, Dundubia annandalei, Balinta tenebricosa, and Orientopsaltria fangrayae, which were not reported from India earlier and among them the genus Orientopsaltria is being reported for the first time from the country. This work provides an account of the taxonomy, natural history, distribution, and acoustics of these four species of cicadas along with their attribute to the culture and customs of the indigenous tribes of the landscape.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Several insect groups have obligate, vertically transmitted bacterial symbionts that provision hosts with nutrients that are limiting in the diet. Some of these bacteria have been shown to descend from ancient infections. Here we show that the large group of related insects including cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers, spittlebugs, and planthoppers host a distinct clade of bacterial symbionts. This newly described symbiont lineage belongs to the phylum Bacteroidetes. Analyses of 16S rRNA genes indicate that the symbiont phylogeny is completely congruent with the phylogeny of insect hosts as currently known. These results support the ancient acquisition of a symbiont by a shared ancestor of these insects, dating the original infection to at least 260 million years ago. As visualized in a species of spittlebug (Cercopoidea) and in a species of sharpshooter (Cicadellinae), the symbionts have extraordinarily large cells with an elongate shape, often more than 30 μm in length; in situ hybridizations verify that these correspond to the phylum Bacteroidetes. “Candidatus Sulcia muelleri” is proposed as the name of the new symbiont.

Abstract:

The Cicadetta montana species complex includes six cicada species from the West-Palaearctic region. Based on acoustic diagnostic characters, a seventh species Cicadetta cantilatrix sp. nov. belonging to the complex is described. The type-locality is in France but the species distribution area extends to Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro. The calling song sequence consists of two phrases with different echemes. This calling pattern clearly differs from those produced by all other members of the complex, including C. cerdaniensis, previously mistaken with the new species. This description increases the acoustic diversity observed within a single cicada genus and supports the hypothesis that sound communication may play a central role in speciation.

Abstract:

New specimens of its type species from the Queensland Late Triassic (Norian) (~227–~208.5 Ma) fossil insect locality at Dinmore have revealed that the old and obscure Late Triassic genus Mesodiphthera Tillyard, 1919, from nearby Denmark Hill, is a tettigarctid cicada, the earliest record of the family and the oldest cicada. The genus is distinguished by the combined presence of three characters: the primary forks of R and M at about the same level, midway between the basal cell and the nodal line; RA2 with four or five terminal branches; and the inter-medial cross-vein backwardly inclined, running between M2 and M3. Of the three species originally ascribed to Mesodiphthera by Tillyard, only its type, M. grandis Tillyard, 1919, is retained in the genus. The other two species differ significantly from the type and are transferred to Tardilly gen. nov., which is similar to Mesodiphthera in the more or less aligned primary forks of R and M placed at about midway between the basal cell and the nodal line, and the backwardly inclined inter-medial cross-vein which runs between M2 and M3. It differs, however, in its smaller size, broader costal space, three-branched M3+4, and differently shaped CuA and CuA2. The new material, all of which is of M. grandis, provides a complete picture of the shape, colour and venation of its tegmen, whereas Tardilly prosboloides (Tillyard) comb. nov., 1922 and Tardilly dunstani (Tillyard) comb. nov., 1922 are still known only from their poorly preserved type specimens. Mesodiphthera and Tardilly exhibit a number of presumed plesiomorphies, viz the costal space much wider than the CuA cell, the basal cell strongly narrowed apically, and the post-nodal cross-vein series closer to the nodal line than the apex, which place it in the probable paraphyletic subfamily Cicadoprosbolinae. A more informed assessment of their relationships, however, must await a comprehensive analysis of the now 29 fossil genera of the family. The Tettigarctidae were the only cicadas of the Mesozoic and the discovery in the Triassic of Australia of Mesodiphthera and Tardilly clearly distinct from the 24 previously known Mesozoic genera, further demonstrates the family’s high degree of structural diversity, and emphasises its almost world-wide distribution in that Era.

Abstract:

The cicada genus Tugelana Distant, 1912 is monotypic and endemic to south-eastern Africa. Material was not available for a recent molecular phylogeny of its tribe, so its precise phylogenetic placement is unestablished. Consequently, a 627 bp sequence of the cytochrome oxidase gene was obtained and its candidate relatives identified as several species of Platypleura Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843 using the BOLD Identification System and NCBI Genbank’s BLAST. Bayesian inference analyses indicated that the type species, the Maputaland Orangewing Cicada Tugelana butleri Distant, 1912, is closely related to the Dune Koko Orangewing Cicada Platypleura zuluensis Villet, 1989, which has a geographical distribution that is parapatric with T. butleri and which has aberrant genitalia for a member of Platypleura. This pair of species is placed fairly deep within the African clade of Platypleura. We therefore formally recognized Platypleura Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843 as a senior synonym of Tugelana Distant, 1912, syn. nov., and assign T. butleri Distant, 1912 to Platypleura as Platypleura butleri (Distant 1912), comb. nov. The species occurs on the wooded grasslands of the Maputaland coastal plateau east of Lebombo Mountains and south of Maputo Bay. Its Extent of Occurrence is about 6360 km2, which would qualify it as Vulnerable under the IUCN’s classification criteria for conservation status.

A diagnosis is provided of the cicada genus Muda Distant, 1897, with descriptions, illustrations and distribution maps for the five species found in Sundaland. Three of these, Muda obtusa (Walker, 1858), M. virguncula (Walker, 1856) and M. tua Duffels, 2004, are redescribed. Muda beccarii (Distant, 1888) and M. concolor Distant, 1897 are junior synonyms of M. virguncula. Abroma tahanensis (Moulton, 1923) is transferred to Muda and redescribed. Muda kinabaluana is described as new to science, and is very peculiar, missing the timbals. An identification key is provided. Characters and taxonomic position of Muda kuroiwae (Matsumura, 1913) from the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan are discussed. Muda is characterized by two supposed synapomorphies, viz., the mediodorsal carina of the male pygofer and the movable upper pygofer lobes; these characters are also found in species of Katoa. Further comparative study of Muda and Katoa is needed to reveal their relationships.

Abstract:

We investigated the effects of periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) on growth of their hosts using records of radial tree-ring growth on oaks (Quercus spp., a common host genus) and pines (Pinus spp., a common nonhost genus) growing within the ranges of 13- and 17-year broods. Growth of oaks was significantly depressed during years of adult emergence by about 4%. Effects in years following emergences or in years prior to emergences were variable or absent. Spectral analyses revealed a significant tendency for periodicity in the growth of oaks, but not pines, matching that of the life cycle of the broods. These results provide some of the first evidence for landscape-level effects of a root-feeding insect and demonstrate that periodical cicadas have a small but detectable effect on growth of their hosts on a geographical scale, considerably larger than previously suspected.

Abstract:

Three new Brazilian species of the sharpshooter genus Amblyscarta Stål, 1869 are described and illustrated: A. elianeae sp. nov. (states of Paraná and Minas Gerais), A. souzalopesi sp. nov. (State of Rio de Janeiro), and A. pinna sp. nov. (State of Mato Grosso). The first two species are from the Atlantic Forest, whereas the third is from the Amazon Forest. Cicada unifasciata Fabricius, 1803 is redescribed and transferred to Amblyscarta based on specimens from Guyana and northern Brazil (Amazon Forest). This Fabrician species is the type of the monobasic genus Strictogonia Melichar, 1926, which is thus considered a junior synonym of Amblyscarta. A diagnosis of Amblyscarta is added, as well as brief notes on the phenology of A. elianeae. This paper provides the first detailed descriptions and illustrations of the female terminalia of Amblyscarta species.

Abstract:

The genus Ayesha belongs to the tribe Dundubiini and is distinguished from other genera of the tribe by the spatulate and strongly overlapping male opercula. The synonymy of three species, Cosmopsaltria vomerigera Breddin, 1901, Dundubia lelita Kirkaldy, 1902 and Cicada elopurina Distant, 1888, which are treated as junior synonyms of A. serva (Walker, 1850) in the literature, is confirmed. Two other species, A. spathulata Stål, 1870 and A. operculissima Stål, 1870, are synonymized here with A. serva, so that Ayesha now becomes a monotypic genus. Ayesha serva is redescribed and recorded from Greater Natuna Island, the northern parts of Borneo and Sulawesi and the southern Philippines; the species is mainly found in trees on the beach, in mangroves and other coastal forests. The broad band long lasting monotonous calling song has a very simple and constant pattern. It consists of a fast repetition of many echemes of duration from 41.7 to 79.0 ms, which are composed of 8 to 19 pulses with a repetition rate of 240 pulses per second.

Abstract:

Abstract The mass recruitment to the midgut contents of lysosomal proteolytic enzymes occurred in insects under three major selective pressures. Hemipteran (true bugs, aphids, and cicadas) ancestors lost their serine peptidases (SP) on adapting to feed on protein-free plant sap. When they returned to protein diets, their cathepsins L and B were recruited to replace their lost SP. Among beetles of the series Cucujiformia, cathepsins L were recruited to hydrolyze ingested plant inhibitors that affect their major SP and/or to deal with special seed proteins, such as prolamins. Larval flies have a very acid middle midgut and use cathepsin D to digest bacteria from their infected food. All the recruited enzymes originated from duplicated genes. The recruited digestive enzymes differ from their lysosomal counterparts in critical regions of their amino acid sequences that resulted in changes in substrate specificities and other kinetic properties. The discharge of digestive cathepsins in the midgut contents, instead of lysosomes, seems to be a consequence of their overexpression or the existence of new targeting signals. Their activation at the midgut contents occurs by an autoactivation mechanism or with the help of other enzymes or by a combination of both. The targeting to lysosomes of the insect lysosomal enzymes does not follow the mammalian mannose 6-phosphate route, but an incompletely known mechanism.

Abstract:

Species previously assigned to Melampsalta Kolenati, in New Caledonia are reviewed. Morphological studies indicate that New Caledonian cicadas currently placed in this genus have been wrongly assigned and should be placed in a new genus. The genus Germalna gen. nov., is therefore erected to accommodate Germalna germaini comb. nov. The genus Germalna gen. nov. was first documented by Michel Boulard, but remained a nomen nudum until now. A redescription of the genus Rouxalna Boulard is provided and the following new species are described: Rouxalna villosa sp. nov., and Rouxalna scabens sp. nov. Male calling songs of Rouxalna rouxi Boulard and Rouxalna scabens sp. nov. are analysed and described from field recordings. A key to the species of Rouxalna is also provided.

Abstract:

This paper provides the first faunal checklist for the family Cicadidae (Insecta: Hemiptera) from Mindanao, Philippines, comprising 17 species belonging to 13 genera. A new species, Chremistica kyoungheeae sp. nov., is described. Platypleura elizabethae Lee and Nelcyndana tener (Stål) are newly added to the cicada fauna of Mindanao. Dokuma Distant syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of Oncotympana Stål, which is redefined to include four species: O. pallidiventris Stål, O. viridicincta Stål, O. nigristigma (Walker) comb. nov., and an undescribed Oncotympana sp., all from the Philippines. Dokuma consobrina Distant syn. nov. is synonymized with O. viridicincta. A new genus, Sonata gen. nov., is described to include the following species previously placed in Oncotympana: Sonata fuscata (Distant), Sonata maculaticollis (De Motschulsky), Sonata ella (Lei & Chou), Sonata expansa (Walker), Sonata mahoni (Distant), Sonata melanoptera (Distant), Sonata obnubila (Distant), Sonata stratoria (Distant), and Sonata virescens (Distant) (nine species comb. nov.). The genus Champaka Distant stat. rev. is resurrected from junior synonymy with Platylomia Stål to include the following species previously placed in the Platylomia spinosa group: Champaka spinosa (Fabricius), Champaka abdulla (Distant), Champaka viridimaculata (Distant), Champaka nigra (Distant), Champaka virescens (Distant), Champaka meyeri (Distant), Champaka wallacei (Beuk), Champaka celebensis Distant, Champaka aerata (Distant), Champaka constanti (Lee), and Champaka maxima (Lee) (eleven species comb. nov.). The genus Nelcyndana Distant, 1906 is transferred to Cicadettini from Taphurini. A key to the species of Oncotympana and information on geographic distributions of the 17 Mindanao species are provided.

The 3i World Auchenorrhyncha database (http://dmitriev.speciesfile.org) is being migrated into TaxonWorks (http://taxonworks.org) and comprises nomenclatural data for all known Auchenorrhyncha taxa (leafhoppers, planthoppers, treehoppers, cicadas, spittle bugs). Of all those scientific names, 8,700 are unique genus-group names (which include valid genera and subgenera as well as their synonyms). According to the Rules of Zoological Nomenclature, a properly formed species-group name when combined with a genus-group name must agree with the latter in gender if the species-group name is or ends with a Latin or Latinized adjective or participle. This provides a double challenge for researchers describing new or citing existing taxa. For each species, the knowledge about the part of speech is essential information (nouns do not change their form when associated with different generic names). For the genus, the knowledge of the gender is essential information. Every time the species is transferred from one genus to another, its ending may need to be transformed to make a proper new scientific name (a binominal name). In modern day practice, it is important, when establishing a new name, to provide information about etymology of this name and the ways it should be used in the future publications: the grammatical gender for a genus, and the part of speech for a species. The older names often do not provide enough information about their etymology to make proper construction of scientific names. That is why in the literature, we can find numerous cases where a scientific name is not formed in conformity to the Rules of Nomenclature. An attempt was made to resolve the etymology of the generic names in Auchenorrhyncha to unify and clarify nomenclatural issues in this group of insects. In TaxonWorks, the rules of nomenclature are defined using the NOMEN onthology (https://github.com/SpeciesFileGroup/nomen).

Abstract:

A molecular phylogeny and a review of family-group classification are presented for 137 species (ca. 125 genera) of the insect family Cicadidae, the true cicadas, plus two species of hairy cicadas (Tettigarctidae) and two outgroup species from Cercopidae. Five genes, two of them mitochondrial, comprise the 4992 base-pair molecular dataset. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic results are shown, including analyses to address potential base composition bias. Tettigarcta is confirmed as the sister-clade of the Cicadidae and support is found for three subfamilies identified in an earlier morphological cladistic analysis. A set of paraphyletic deep-level clades formed by African genera are together named as Tettigomyiinae n. stat. Taxonomic reassignments of genera and tribes are made where morphological examination confirms incorrect placements suggested by the molecular tree, and 11 new tribes are defined (Arenopsaltriini n. tribe, Durangonini n. tribe, Katoini n. tribe, Lacetasini n. tribe, Macrotristriini n. tribe, Malagasiini n. tribe, Nelcyndanini n. tribe, Pagiphorini n. tribe, Pictilini n. tribe, Psaltodini n. tribe, and Selymbriini n. tribe). Tribe Tacuini n. syn. is synonymized with Cryptotympanini, and Tryellina n. syn. is synonymized with an expanded Tribe Lamotialnini. Tribe Hyantiini n. syn. is synonymized with Fidicinini. Tribe Sinosenini is transferred to Cicadinae from Cicadettinae, Cicadatrini is moved to Cicadettinae from Cicadinae, and Ydiellini and Tettigomyiini are transferred to Tettigomyiinae n. stat from Cicadettinae. While the subfamily Cicadinae, historically defined by the presence of timbal covers, is weakly supported in the molecular tree, high taxonomic rank is not supported for several earlier clades based on unique morphology associated with sound production.

Resumo: As cigarras são insetos facilmente reconhecidos pelo seu grande tamanho e pelo som emitido pelos machos. Suas ninfas são consideradas pragas de algumas culturas por se alimentarem da seiva das raízes das plantas. Carineta é um gênero neotropical que inclui aproximadamente 70 espécies, sendo pelo menos 20 mencionadas para o Brasil. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo registrar a primeira ocorrência de Carineta gemella Boulard, Carineta matura Distant e Carineta spoliata Walker para o Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Os insetos foram capturados em Dezembro de 2010 em Cotriguaçu, MT (09°52’24”S, 58°13’17”W), com uso de armadilha luminosa modelo Luiz de Queiroz. C. matura e C. spoliata são conhecidas como pragas do café, sendo associadas até o momento apenas a essa planta hospedeira. Referente a C. gemella, ainda não é conhecida uma planta hospedeira para essa espécie. Estudos futuros serão necessários para determinar quais espécies florestais são hospedeiras das espécies de Carineta aqui reportadas, bem como os prejuízos causados pelas mesmas. Deste modo fica explícita a importância de estudos de distribuição, pois possibilitam o conhecimento da fauna regional assim como a elaboração de estratégias conservacionistas.Carineta species (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in state of Mato Grosso, BrazilAbstract: Cicadas are insects easily recognized by its large size and the sound emitted by males. Their nymphs are considered pests of some crops by feeding on the sap of plant roots. Carineta is a neotropical genus comprising about 70 species, at least 20 mentioned for Brazil. This study aimed to register the first occurrence of Carineta gemella Boulard, Carineta matura Distant and Carineta Spoliata Walker for the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The insects were captured in December 2010 in Cotriguaçu, MT (09°52'24"S, 58°13'17"W), using light trap model Luiz de Queiroz. C. matura and C. spoliata are known as coffee pests, being associated so far only this host plant. Regarding C. gemella, it is not yet known a host plant for this species. Future studies are needed to determine which tree species are host species Carineta here reported, as well as the damage caused by them. Thus is explicit the importance of distribution studies, as they allow the knowledge of the regional fauna as well as the development of conservation strategies.

ABSTRACTGene loss and genome reduction are defining characteristics of endosymbiotic bacteria. The most highly reduced endosymbiont genomes have lost numerous essential genes related to core cellular processes such as replication, transcription, and translation. Computational gene predictions performed for the genomes of the two bacterial symbionts of the cicadaDiceroprocta semicincta, “CandidatusHodgkinia cicadicola” (Alphaproteobacteria) and “Ca. Sulcia muelleri” (Bacteroidetes), have found only 26 and 16 tRNA genes and 15 and 10 aminoacyl tRNA synthetase genes, respectively. Furthermore, the original “Ca. Hodgkinia cicadicola” genome annotation was missing several essential genes involved in tRNA processing, such as those encoding RNase P and CCA tRNA nucleotidyltransferase as well as several RNA editing enzymes required for tRNA maturation. How these cicada endosymbionts perform basic translation-related processes remains unknown. Here, by sequencing eukaryotic mRNAs and total small RNAs, we show that the limited tRNA set predicted by computational annotation of “Ca. Sulcia muelleri” and “Ca. Hodgkinia cicadicola” is likely correct. Furthermore, we show that despite the absence of genes encoding tRNA processing activities in the symbiont genomes, symbiont tRNAs have correctly processed 5′ and 3′ ends and seem to undergo nucleotide modification. Surprisingly, we found that most “Ca. Hodgkinia cicadicola” and “Ca. Sulcia muelleri” tRNAs exist as tRNA halves. We hypothesize that “Ca. Sulcia muelleri” and “Ca. Hodgkinia cicadicola” tRNAs function in bacterial translation but require host-encoded enzymes to do so.IMPORTANCEThe smallest bacterial genomes, in the range of about 0.1 to 0.5 million base pairs, are commonly found in the nutritional endosymbionts of insects. These tiny genomes are missing genes that encode proteins and RNAs required for the translation of mRNAs, one of the most highly conserved and important cellular processes. In this study, we found that the bacterial endosymbionts of cicadas have genomes which encode incomplete tRNA sets and lack genes required for tRNA processing. Nevertheless, we found that endosymbiont tRNAs are correctly processed at their 5′ and 3′ ends and, surprisingly, that mostly exist as tRNA halves. We hypothesize that the cicada host must supply its symbionts with these missing tRNA processing activities.
