Abstract:
Five beige bacterial strains (176/10T, 178/10, 182/10, 185/7 and 193/8) were isolated from white storks in Poland and found to share identical 16S rRNA gene sequences; they were also investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. The cells of all isolates were rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative. A comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of these organisms with the sequences of the type strains of the most closely related species of the genus Psychrobacter showed highest sequence similarities to the type strains of Psychrobacter pulmonis and Psychrobacter faecalis (both 97.1 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to all other species of the genus Psychrobacter were below 96.3 %. All five isolates showed an identical profile of physiological reactions and almost identical fatty acid profiles consisting of mainly C18 : 1ω9c, but also C12 : 0 3-OH as a characteristic hydroxylated fatty acid. A quinone system with mainly ubiquinone Q-8 was detected and the polar lipid profile of the type strain, 176/10T, was mainly composed of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine and diphosphatidylglycerol, plus some hitherto uncharacterized phospholipids and one aminolipid. The major polyamines were spermidine and putrescine. DNA–DNA hybridizations between 176/10T and the type strains of P. pulmonis and P. faecialis resulted in relatedness values below 70 %. These results indicate that the strains represent a novel species, for which the name Psychrobacter ciconiae sp. nov. (type strain 176/10T = CIP 110777T = LMG 28175T = CCM 8519T) is proposed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We identified a novel herpesvirus in a captive juvenile white stork ( Ciconia ciconia) that experienced progressive weight loss followed by death. Histologic findings included severe splenic and hepatic necrosis, and intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes and unidentified splenic cells. The virus was amplified, sequenced, and subsequently accessioned as Ciconiid alphaherpesvirus 1. Phylogenetic analysis was performed and revealed that this virus is more closely related to mammalian herpesviruses than those within the genus Mardivirus. Additional sequence of viruses in this area may elucidate the ancestral virus that jumped from reptilian to mammalian hosts.

In Turkey, a study was conducted during the years 2009–2015 to detect the gastrointestinal helminth species of 18 white storks (Ciconia ciconia Linnaeus, 1758 (Aves: Ciconiiformes) sampled from aquatic or swamp areas of Bursa Province, one of the inter-route sites where storks intensely stay. The results of postmortem examination revealed that 17 (94.44%) white storks harboured one or more helminth species. Eight species of helminths were detected at the following prevalence rates: Dictymetra discoidea (38.88%), Chaunocephalus ferox (37.50%), Schistocephalus solidus (27.77%), Stephanoprora (Monilifer) spinulosa (18.75%), Echinoparyphium sp. (12.50%), Tylodelphys excavata (6.25%), T. clavata (6.25%), and Syncuaria ciconiae (6.25%). This study is the first report on the presence of all the above species except T. excavata from white storks in Turkey. Stephanoprora (M.) spinulosa was found in Ciconiiform birds for the first time in this study.

Deutonymphs of hypoderatid mites (Astigmata: Hypoderatidae) are subcutaneous parasites of various groups of birds and some rodents. A new hypoderatid mite species, Neottialges (Caloenectes) ciconiae n. sp., is described from the black stork, Ciconia nigra (Ciconiiformes: Ciconiidae), in Portugal. The new species is most similar to but differs from N. (C.) distinctus Fain and Lawrence, 1986 in having smaller prodorsal and hysteronotal shields not encompassing bases of setae si, se, cp, c2, e2 and h1, the area between genital papillae completely sclerotized and fused with sclerotized area of coxal fields III, IV, and by the absence of the postanal shield. A new combination, N. Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn the years before his death, Johannes Ciconia (1370?–1412) set to music several poems penned by the young Venetian humanist Leonardo Giustinian. One of the earliest of these settings is Con lagreme bagnandome el viso. This article proposes that both the poem and its setting by Ciconia operate within the emotional community of early humanists active at Padua in the decades around the year 1400. The public funeral oratory of one of the high-profile humanists active in this community in Padua, Pier Paolo Vergerio, reveals a renewed interest in ancient rhetoric that was instrumental in the development of new modes of self-expression within this emotional community. Different types of musical repetition in Ciconia's setting of Con lagreme serve as musical analogues to rhetorical figures of pathos witnessed in the orations of Vergerio.

Abstract:

Abstract:
White stork can be noticed in the whole territory of Lithuania. Many people don’t consider the danger to this species and the importance to human living environment. I investigated the status and the choice of habitation of the white stork while the intensity of agriculture is reduced. At the beginning of the last century the number of white storks decreased, but now, when the intensity of agriculture reduced, the population of white storks is increasing. The research performed during summer of 2004 in Kedainiai district, testifies that. In comparison with 1994-1995 year accounting results, white stork population largely increased. In 1994-1995 year there were 212 nests found only and in 2004 year – 363 nests. There was identified that forest areas, hydrographical net and agriculture have a strong impact to the choice of habitation. Human activities perform top influence to it. White stork can be reasonably considered as an indicator of ecological agriculture.

Abstract:
White Stork ( Ciconia ciconia, Linnaeus, 1758) is a summer visitor and passage migrant in Turkey. Although being widespread in summer near wetlands of Turkey, except for the eastern and western parts of the Black Sea Region, there has been no research on this species involving regular monitoring of nests. In this study, breeding success and survival of nestlings in a population in Kizilcahamam-Ankara as well as behavioral differences among nests and their probable consequences on breeding success were studied. Regular field observations throughout six-month long breeding seasons between 2003 and 2006 were carried out to determine parent and young behavior patterns at nest. Clutch size, and numbers of chicks hatched and fledged fluctuated throughout 2003-2006 for pairs that bred while fledgling success (average fledgling per successful nests with egg laid) were 2.63 in 2003, 3.82 in 2004, 1.89 in 2005 and 3.13 in 2006. These values are in good agreement with those recorded in northern Europe. The relationship between beginning date of incubation and both clutch size and brood size were found to be different for 2004 and 2005. Such a relationship may be significant in breeding seasons colder than usual. For 2004 and 2005, the amount of food brought and caring towards young by parents were compared with breeding success (proportion of hatched young that were fledged), and breeding success was found to increase with increasing amount of food provisioning. However, this result may be suggested to be related with weather conditions. In conclusion, Kizilcahamam White Stork population has been found to be not restricted by food or nest site availability and with a reproductive output above the European average, although annual climatic stochasticity was found to affect reproductive output.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD CHEMISTRY OF FREE-LIVING YOUNG WHITE STORKS (Ciconia ciconia) Hematology and blood chemistry are two diagnostic tools, which use is expanding in the wild birds clinical practice. Due to the high variability and inter-specific variation in the conservation status of each species, caused by the amount of existing threats to these animals, it became essential to know the reference values of each species, so that clinical rehabilitation centers be able to perform a better job. The aim of this work was to obtain hematological and blood chemical parameters in young white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and assess the influence of age and fasting. The study methodology was based in blood collection from 77 young animals who were admitted in GREFA, in Madrid, identified as healthy after physical examination and showing good body condition. With regard to hematological parameters age related differences were obtained, suggesting that an increase in age is accompanied by an increase in hematocrit and total red blood cells count and a decrease in the value of total white blood cells count. There was no change in the total thrombocyte count. The presence of blood parasites has was investigated, but no parasites were found in the sample. Age related differences were found in blood chemical parameters, suggesting that an advance in age is accompanied by an increase in the amount of total protein, calcium, glucose and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and a decrease in the amount of alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), uric acid and triglycerides. A postprandial increase in plasma levels of bile acids, triglycerides and uric acid and the influence of food variety in the amounts of phosphorus, total protein and triglycerides was observed. Higher values of lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and creatine kinase (CK) were also obtained in animals potentially subjected to muscle injury. Finally, age and fasting didn´t influence gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and creatinine´s values.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Human actions on the natural environment cannot always be considered as impacts resulting from their behavior to survive. Many of these activities have caused irreversible damage and changes in the landscape, flora, and fauna. By contrast, several actions, carried out “a priori” with the best intention, to help in the conservation of species considered in danger, have caused a dangerous decompensation. Aid for the recovery of some species of birds has led to their overpopulation. The artificial contributions of food, always in the same places, have caused an excessive increase in the number of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus), which has produced the reduction of other endangered species, such as the black stork (Ciconia nigra) and the Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata), which have been displaced from the rocks in which they nested due to the harassment of a greater number of vultures. Besides, vultures are attacking domestic livestock at the most defenseless times, such as during calving. Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) has become out of control in numbers in Europe. The two classic breeding areas, La Camargue (France) and La Laguna de Fuente de Piedra (Spain) have produced an enormous annual number of individuals that are distributed among the few lagoons of Mediterranean Europe. The wetlands are devastated by the flamingo, which removes the mud and prevents sunlight from reaching the underwater vegetation, turning these lagoons into dead water, having to be abandoned (temporarily) by most aquatic species, including the flamingo. The shortage of food resources of natural origin, for such a disproportionate number, has caused the flamingo to invade the rice fields, accepting its grain as a substitute for the invertebrates that it habitually consumed, and which are now scarce. The same is the case with the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) in southern Europe. The increase in their population has reduced the number of reptiles and amphibians, bringing several of their species to the brink of extinction. Storks have varied their prey spectrum, consuming carrion, and preying on Montagu’s harrier (Circus pygargus) brood. In these cases, and many others, the theory of “the more the better” is not valid. If we want to make the protection of some species compatible with the conservation of others, it seems necessary to redirect some situations …
