Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants (var ‘Florida 77’ and ‘Cimarron’) were injected with Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht., and stressed for four consecutive harvests by yellowstriped armyworms, Spodoptera ornithogalli (Gueneé), under greenhouse conditions. No significant interactions existed between insect defoliation and inoculation with F. oxysporum. Insect defoliation alone had significant effects on dry matter yield, stem height, and maturity, but forage quality, root weight, and root carbohydrate levels were not significantly affected. Abstract Polarimetric radars are shown to be capable of tornado detection through the recognition of tornadic debris signatures that are characterized by the anomalously low cross-correlation coefficient ρhv and differential reflectivity ZDR. This capability is demonstrated for three significant tornadic storms that struck the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, metropolitan area. The first tornadic debris signature, based on the measurements with the National Severe Storms Laboratory’s Cimarron polarimetric radar, was reported for a storm on 3 May 1999. Similar signatures were identified for two signifi

Abstract Seven chemical insecticide treatments were evaluated for control of AW larvae and aphids in the first crop of a second year stand of ‘Cimarron VR’ alfalfa on the Agronomy Experiment Station, Stillwater, OK. Pretreatment samples indicated a population of 3.1 AW larvae and 20.5 aphids per stem. Insecticides were applied on 1 Apr using flooding nozzles (Spraying Systems Co., TK SS-5) calibrated to deliver 20 gpa at 24 psi when traveling 3 mph. A RCB design was used with 5 X 10 m plots replicated 4 times. Sampling was conducted at 3, 6, 13, and 18 DAT by pulling 25 stems per plot and plac

Identification of resistant or tolerant onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivars is crucial for the development of integrated management strategies for Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). Exclusively vectored by onion thrips (Thrips tabaci), IYSV is a potentially devastating tospovirus of onion that has been confirmed to be present in 15 countries all over the world. In this study, 18 winter-sown onion entries were screened for IYSV symptom expression over two seasons. Over the growing season, straw-colored, necrotic lesions typical of IYSV infection were observed and rated for disease severity. Entries, N

Abstract From geometrical considerations, the optimum tilt angle for a meteorological radar at which the best possible vertical resolution results is derived. This optimum angle is a compromise between the effects of beam divergence and range gate spacing. For typical S-band radar parameters, this optimum tilt angle is found to be about 7°. However, wind analyses at this tilt angle were found not to be accurate in practice because of ground clutter contamination, and suboptimal angles need to be used. Most of the ground clutter was found to be sensed in the radar beam sidelobes. The data prese

The North American fish genus Macrhybopsis (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) as presently conceived comprises 12 species and occurs in much of interior eastern North America. Variation in the mitochondrial ND2 gene and the nuclear S7 intron 1 reveal conflicting gene-tree relationships for deeper nodes, which are assumed to represent past introgression and heterospecific mitochondrial fixation. The results support monophyly for the wide-ranging M. aestivalis complex with successive sister relationships to M. gelida, M. meeki, and M. storeriana. The current species-level taxonomy of Macrhybopsis is genera

Samples from the n trees nearest to a point or plot center are sometimes used to estimate per-tree values such as age or growth from increment cores. Clutter et al. (J.L. Clutter, J.C. Fortson, L.V. This sampling procedure falls into the category of n-tree distance sampling in which the nth closest tree to a point defines a plot radius that can be u

When lucerne is used for making silage it is prone to developing inferior quality because of a high pH. When lucerne is directly grazed by livestock it is prone to causing bloat, which can be lethal for individual animals. This project examined whether there are cultivar differences in buffering capacity and hence silage-making quality, and in foam stability in leaf extracts and hence the likely persistence of foam in the digesta of the animal. If differences exist, it should be possible either to choose cultivars that are less prone to these problems or to genetically select for superior sila
