Full textThe present study deals with the microwave hydration of metakaolin lended cement used in Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement Composites (GRCC). Microwave treatment conditions have been optimized and compared to the results obtained with room temperature curing. Lime consumption has been measured by means of Infrared Spectrometry and differential Thermal Analysis. It was shown that the pozzolanic activity of metakaolin is enhanced by the microwave treatment, allowing halfway reduction of the necessary amount of metakaolin to consume the total calcium hydroxide generated by cement. Mortars and RCC mechanical characteristics have been measured. It was shown that high initial resistances and law porosity can be obtained with the microwave curing technique. It appears that the temperature generated inside of the material itself leads to the thermal acceleration of setting. A modification of hydrates morphology was observed by §canning Electron Microscopy

Full textAn axis of sustainable development deals with recycling and valorization of the majority of waste. In France, the average volume of sediments annually dredged is estimated to be 50 millions cubic meters. In the research presented in this dissertation, the valorization of dredged sediment at the autonomous port of Le Havre is proposed. Four binders, namely, lime, fly ash, cement and silica fume were used in this study. After a general introduction on the treatment of dredged sediments, a review of literature is presented in chapter II. Chapter III is devoted to the study of the characteristics of the treated sediment. A method of sample preparation is given in chapter IV. Chapter V present the analysis and interpretation of the results of the experiments. Finally the conclusion and perspectives are proposed in Chapter VI. Upon completion of this work, the use of the dredged sediments as a possible material in the domain of road appears quite conceivable. A technique for treating fine sediments, polluted by an engine oil is presented. On the other hand, the mechanical performance and durability of sediments treated with silica fume are improved

Full textHydroelectric dams, as well as waterways and marine harbours, can be subject to solid particles accumulation. Although sediment is mainly managed within the watercourse by a transfer into the downstream river bed, technical or environmental reasons might imply an on-land management in the future. Albeit sediments should be considered as waste according to regulations, dredged materials appear as valuable and renewable resources. In a circular economy approach, some industrial sectors could beneficially reuse fine-grained dam sediment as alternative raw materials, including hydraulic binders industry. Then, two ways of reusing are considered in this PhD thesis with on one hand, a valorization as raw material in the clinker meal and, on the other hand, as pozzolanic substitute to clinker in blended cements.Studying 8 different sediments that were sampled on the French territory, the approach aims to encompass various contexts and define some typologies. The materials are characterized in detail on physico-chemical and mineralogical aspects. These preliminary characterisations are necessary in order to test both the beneficial reuse opportunities and check the suitability of dredged sediments. The beneficial reuse of sediment in the clinker raw meal as replacement of traditional clay resources is experimented at the lab scale. Clinkers that maximize the fine-grained sediment content, between 25 and 35 % according to the sediment, are synthetized. These clinkers exhibit some special microstructural features that can be corrected by a clay addition as a third compound. Thus, it is shown that any sediment can be reused in the raw meal and that clinker characteristics can be anticipated and adjusted. As a demonstration, a CEM I 52.5 N cement was obtained incorporating 11.4 % of sediment in the raw meal.Concerning pozzolanic reactivity development, physical and mineralogical sediment characteristics are followed according to the calcination temperature. In parallel, pozzolanic reactivity is assessed with both chemical and physical tests, with a partial substitution of Portland cement by calcined sediments in cement pastes, in order to determine an optimum calcination temperature. Kaolinite contents around 10 % for some of the studied samples lead to a moderate to high pozzolanic reactivity, that can be comparable to fly ash. However, for all the sediments that contain calcite and only illite and chlorite clays, activation is low or null

Full text[The aim of this study is ta show the possibility of manufacturing low-cost cement in Indonesia. To realize this objective, it is possible to use abundant laterites and a middle temperature thermal process (800°C) which is less expansive in energy than the Portland Cement production. The use of physical-chemical techniques (X-ray diffraction - differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry) and the study of mechanical strengths on mini-cylinders show the kaolinite content of the laterite is the main factor affecting its reactivity after burning. The strengths reached by mixtures of Portland Cement and burnt laterite are high and the durability of such binders is good because the lime content is lower. Concretes built up with these binders present interesting characterise in view of a low-cost housing in Indonesia. ]
