An investigation of the effects of commercial mechanised selective logging on rain forest vegetation and mammals, was undertaken in the Lope Reserve, central Gabon, between January 1989 to July 1991. Vegetation in Lope is mostly semi-evergreen lowland tropical rain forest, but there are some localised patches of savanna., which are thought to be natural in origin, but which are maintained today by regular fires started by humans. Study sites were established in areas of forest logged 20-25, 10-15, and 3-5 years previously, a fourth was logged during the study, and a fifth remained unexploited.

Abstract:
The response of a platform subjected to a strong ground motion is highly affected by the method of modelling, and special attention should be paid to such advanced analysis. While the potential of dynamic inelastic analysis and performance based design of offshore platforms is recognised in earthquake design and assessment, they have inherent shortcomings. This paper discusses the critical issues and their effects on the obtained results in the application of inelastic dynamic analysis. Areas of possible developments that would render the method more applicable to the prediction of dynamic res

Large marine two-stroke diesel engines still represent the major propulsion system for merchant shipping. Withsteadily increasing transport demands, rising operational costs and stricter environmental legislations, the global marine shipping industry finds itself facing the challenge to future-proof its fleet. In order to comply with international maritime organizations emission standards (TIER II and TIER III), highly sophisticated and flexible combustion systems are demanded. With the help of spray and combustion research such systems can be developed and continuously improved. A highly valu

This paper aims to be a qualitative research, respectively a case study. I will analyze two famous cases of accounting fraud: Enron and Lehman Brothers. The analysis considers the techniques used to manipulate the result, the accounting fraud, the causes, the effects, the people involved and the sanctions applied. Although they occurred at different points in time, both have gone down in history as accounting manipulations with a significant economic impact and showed the failure of supervisors. Enron took advantage of accounting policies that allowed the creation of special purpose entities t

The effects of low velocity impact on woven composite panels are presented in this study. In the experimental program, 8 ply, 16 ply and 24 ply VARTM manufactured woven composite panels were subjected to low velocity impact loads. The laminates were held in a special fixture, which was designed to simulate simply supported boundaries. Impact experiments were conducted using a Dynatup low velocity impact testing machine where a drop-weight system was used to strike each panel at 90° incidence under controlled conditions of impact velocity. The impactor used was of a constant weight and tip diam

Over the past decade, several long-duration subduction earthquakes took place in different locations around the world, e.g., Chile in 2010, Japan in 2011, China in 2008, and Indonesia in 2004. Recent research has revealed that long-duration, large-magnitude earthquakes may occur along the Cascadia subduction zone of the Pacific Northwest Coast of the U.S. The duration of an earthquake often affects the response of structures. Current seismic design specifications mostly use response spectra to identify the hazard and do not consider duration effects. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the
