Abstract:
Over the past decades, decision making under risk has garnered a great amount of attention both in the field of economics and psychology. Although state-dependent variabilities of risk taking are well-documented, little is known about the effects of a person’s preferred time of day, or chronotype, in risky decision making. Under circumstances of circadian mismatch (e.g., when an “early bird” makes decisions in the evening), research suggests that decision making may reflect a greater reliance on heuristics, such as using stereotypes in social judgments. However, the effects of circadian mismat

The genetic architecture of placental abruption (PA) remains poorly understood. We examined variations in SNPs of circadian clock-related genes in placenta with PA risk. Genotyping was performed using the Illumina Cardio-MetaboChip. We examined 116 SNPs in 13 genes known to moderate circadian rhythms. Logistic regression models were fit to estimate odds ratios (ORs). Alternatively, non-human circadian studies have reported population- specific effects, often expressed as latitudinal dines. Genome-wide genotyping results can produce dis

Photoperiodism is the ability of plants and animals to utilize day length or night length to mitigate seasonal exigencies. The circadian clock allows organisms to organize daily demands. Previous experiments have revealed, through phenotypic expression, that the daily circadian clock and seasonal photoperiodic timer have evolved independently, yet molecular evidence is lacking. 博士
國立臺灣大學
生化學研究所
88
Part I:Abstract Variations in concentrations of plasma and erythrocyte amino acids during the day were studied in ten healthy men fed ordinary Taiwanese meals, first without and, 1 week later with monosodium glutamate (MSG) added. MSG in amounts of 15, 40 and 45 mg/kg (total: 100 mg/kg/day) was added, respectively, to breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. Heparinized blood samples were collected over 24 hours with 1 to 3 hours intervals. The aims of the present study were (1) to determine the profile and significance of circadian variations in plasma

Abstract:
Diel substrate preferences were tested in artificial stream experiments for six cyprinids: redfin shiner (Lythrurus umbratilis), silver shiner (Notropis photogenis), spotfin shiner (Cyprinella spiloptera), central stoneroller (Campostoma anomalum), striped shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus), and bluntnose minnow (Pimephales notatus). We used experimental pools containing two of three substrate types (sand, cobble, and gravel) per trial to test if habitat preferences differed in day and night observations. Over 85% of specimens were observed over cobble substrate during the day, and all species sw

Abstract:
Hybrid plants and animals, like corn and the domestic dog, grow larger and more vigorously than their parents, a common phenomenon known as hybrid vigor or heterosis. In hybrids between Arabidopsis ecotypes or species (in allotetraploids), altered expression of circadian clock genes leads to increased starch and chlorophyll content and greater biomass. In plants and animals, circadian clock regulation plays a key role in optimizing metabolic pathways, increasing fitness, and controlling responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In the allotetraploids, the increased level of heterosis is like

Dissertação de mest., Aquacultura e Pescas, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Univ. do Algarve, 2011
An experimental crustacean bottom trawling survey targeting the deep-water rose shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris was carried out off the south of Portugal over five 24-hour cycles. Although circadian bias in the catch rates for this fishery has been reported, no conclusive study had been carried out until now. Catch per unit effort oscillated with the time of the day. Total catches, both in numbers and weight considerably higher in daytime than at night, suggesting that the 24-hour lig

Abstract:
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor disorder characterized by abnormal circadian rhythm with an increase in the severity of sensory and motor symptoms at night. Even though many neurological diseases have shown a strong nexus between motor and cognitive symptoms, to date, cognitive functions especially cognitive control in RLS has been poorly understood. Given that cognitive control is a key to leading a self-serving and successful life, including many aspects of employment, social life, and attaining long-term goals, this thesis aimed to examine cognitive control and the underlyin
