Abstract:
The textile industry is currently operating in an unsustainable manner that is based on overproduction and wasteful, resource-draining practices. Therefore, recently, the concept of circular economy has been presented as a possible solution and a way forward. Changing linear economy business practices and basing them on the circular economy concept is anticipated to solve social and environmental problems while maintaining economic growth. However, fashion retail value chains essentially depend on the logic of mass production, fast fashion, and linear take-make-dispose models. Presently, circu

The awareness on raw material scarcity and environmental issues has globally stimulated interest into the re-design of products, processes or services, maximizing prevention, reuse and recycling rates. Within this context, plastic represents a key material. In particular, plastic packaging is a priority issue, accounting for the 40% of the European converters demand and about 60% of post-consumer plastic waste. Nowadays, less than 30% of collected plastic waste is recycled, while landfilling and incineration rates of plastic waste remain high, approximately 27% and 41% respectively. The EU Com

Abstract:
For years the textile and clothing industry has underestimated the environmental impact of its fast and global operating, its linear “take-make-use-dispose” model makes it one of the most polluting of current times. To safeguard profitability and reputation, the industry needs to integrate respect, responsibility and sustainability in its design, operations and distribution activities. As resources are finite and pressure on the environment needs to be drastically reduced, a redefinition of the system, making the industry shift from linear to circular, is imperative. Even as the current linear value chains (LVC) of organic waste and animal feed hold the potential to become circular, these practices continue to pose major environmental risks such as deforestation and overfishing. Therefore, a novel circular value chain (CVC) is proposed, connecting the organic waste stream with animal feed production by the use of insect-based organic waste conversion technology. The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is chosen as the insect-based conversion technology since it has nutritional properties, which serves both waste treatment and animal feed material production purposes.

As volumes of packaging waste are increasing worldwide, the urge to reduce environmental and health impacts caused by this waste stream is leading to rising concern over how it is managed and disposed of. At the same time, resource scarcity and linear consumption patterns have regained attention among business leaders, policy makers and people who have become increasingly aware of the importance of reversing this trend using a sustainable model of growth, also known as ‘sustainable development’.
