Abstract:
ABSTRACT Cisco Systems, Inc. manufactures and sells networking and communications products and provides services associated with that equipment and its use. In April 2001, Cisco announced a charge of $2.249 billion against earnings for obsolete inventory. The financial press gave extensive coverage to the write-off, including claims that Cisco was writing off inventory in an effort to set up future windfall profits. Students are required to examine and integrate information from multiple sources, including the relevant U.S. authoritative literature, SEC commentary relevant to Cisco's decision, and Cisco's disclosures, to critically evaluate reactions from the financial press and examine the potential for biased reporting in both Cisco's disclosures and the reactions of the financial press. This case is appropriate for an undergraduate intermediate accounting course or for graduate courses in financial statement analysis or accounting theory.

Abstract:
A defining character of the piscine family Salmonidae is autotetraploidy resulting from a genome-doubling event some 25–100 million years ago. Initially, duplicated genes may have undergone concerted evolution and tetrasomic inheritance. Homeologous chromosomes eventually diverged and the resulting reduction in recombination and gene conversion between paralogous genes allowed the re-establishment of disomic inheritance. Among extant salmonine fishes (e.g. salmon, trout, char) the growth hormone (GH) gene is generally represented by two functional paralogs, GH1 and GH2. Sequence analyses of salmonid GH genes from species of subfamilies Coregoninae (whitefish, ciscos) and Salmoninae were used to examine the evolutionary history of the duplicated GH genes. Two divergent GH gene paralogs were also identified in Coregoninae, but they were not assignable to the GH1 and GH2 categories. The average sequence divergence between the coregonine GH genes was more than twofold lower than the corresponding divergence between the salmonine GH1 and GH2. Phylogenetic analysis of the coregonine GH paralogs did not resolve their relationship to the salmonine paralogs. These findings suggest that disomic inheritance of two GH genes was established by different mechanisms in these two subfamilies.Key words: salmon, phylogeny, growth hormone, disomy, tetraploidy.

Abstract:
Rainbow Smelt (Osmerus mordax, Mitchill, 1814) has been widely introduced into lakes across North America and are reported to have an adverse effect on native fishes. In this study, we investigated the long-term changes to the pelagic fish assemblage in a northwestern Ontario lake (Sandybeach Lake) after Rainbow Smelt were introduced in the 1980s. We repeated an earlier summer, pelagic gill-netting survey of Sandybeach Lake and a nearby reference lake (Little Vermillion Lake) that does not contain Rainbow Smelt. Fishes throughout the water column were sampled with overnight sets of 5.2-m-deep, multi-mesh horizontal gill-nets. Compared with 1990 pelagic sampling, native fishes were significantly less abundant, less diverse, and largely absent from the deeper parts of Sandybeach Lake in 2012. Cisco (Coregonus artedi, Lesueur, 1818), Emerald Shiner (Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque, 1818), and Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis, Mitchill, 1814) were notably absent in 2012. In contrast, Rainbow Smelt remained abundant at all depths sampled. A small number of ciscoes — including Shortjaw Cisco (Coregonus zenithicus (Jordan and Evermann, 1909)) — and Lake Whitefish were captured from benthic gill-nets. Based on the lack of ciscoes in pelagic gill-nets, the very old ages (mean 30 years) of the few individuals captured in benthic gill-nets, and a severely skewed sex ratio, it is highly likely that ciscoes will be extirpated from Sandybeach Lake. Although the composition of the pelagic fish assemblage differed between years, Cisco was still abundant in Little Vermillion Lake with the presence of young individuals indicating ongoing recruitment.

Abstract:
We quantified production, biomass, and production to biomass (P/B) ratios for cisco (Coregonus artedi) in Trout Lake, Wisconsin, USA (2001–2015). Across all years, annual production, biomass, and P/B were variable ranging 0.6–30.2 kg·ha−1·year−1, 1.2–39.7 kg·ha−1, and 0.4–0.9·year−1, respectively. Cisco production exhibited obvious decline. However, neither biomass nor P/B changed significantly over time. Long-term patterns of environmental conditions remained unchanged during the study and were unrelated to cisco production. However, lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) relative abundance showed a strong inverse relationship with cisco production and biomass. Intense lake trout stocking has occurred in this lake over time to conserve a genetically unique strain of the species. These management efforts may have had the unintended consequence of amplifying top-down predation on cisco. Since cisco P/B has gone largely unchanged, cisco production would be predicted to rebound quickly to adaptive reductions in lake trout stocking. Further increases in lake trout numbers could place both populations at risk of collapse. This study provides an example of a fisheries production approach for understanding and conserving cold-water fisheries, especially in lakes dominated by ciscoes.

Abstract:
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain diel vertical migration (DVM); however, they have generally been applied to DVM behavior of a single trophic level. We evaluate the costs (predation risk) and benefits (foraging rate and growth rate potential) of different hypothetical and observed DVM trajectories for a three-level pelagic food chain in Lake Superior containing opossum shrimp (Mysis relicta), deepwater ciscoes (Coregonus spp.), and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). Lake trout appear to be maximizing foraging and growth rates by tracking vertically migrating ciscoes, while the DVM trajectories of ciscoes suggests a trade-off between predation risk and growth. For ciscoes, two alternative DVM trajectories both minimize the ratio of risk to growth: a shallow trajectory that follows low light levels down to 80 m during the day and a deep trajectory (below 150 m) that tracks highest Mysis densities. Observed cisco DVM trajectories appear to follow the shallow high risk – high growth trajectory in 2001, but switch to the deep, low risk – low growth trajectory in 2004 when lake trout density was higher and the density of ciscoes was lower.

Abstract:
Karyotypes of lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis, and various Great Lakes cisco species, lake herring or cisco, C. artedi, bloater, C. hoyi, blackfin cisco, C. nigripinnis, and shortjaw cisco, C. zenithicus, were analyzed using Giemsa staining, C-banding, silver staining, and Chromomycin A3 fluorescence. Coregonus clupeaformis had a karyotype (2n = 80, NF = 98) indistinguishable from that described for C. laveretus from Europe, with one pair of nuclear organizer regions (NORs) on the short arms of a small acrocentric chromosome pair and a second NOR on the short arms of another acrocentric chromosome pair. This species displayed a size polymorphism involving the heterochromatic short arm of the largest metacentric–submetacentric pair. All four cisco species had similar karyotypes (2n = 80, NF = 98), with the exception of some C. artedi from Lake Superior, which were heterozygous for a chromosome fusion involving the NOR chromosomes (2n = 79). One NOR was located pericentromerically on the long arm of the second largest acrocentric chromosome and a second NOR on the short arms of another acrocentric chromosome pair in several individuals. C-banding revealed that the difference in chromosome morphology between lake whitefish and the ciscoes probably resulted from amplification of heterochromatin on the short arms of one pair of large submetacentric–metacentric chromosomes.

Abstract:
The distribution of fishes is influenced by a host of physico-chemical and biological variables, including temperature and oxygen, prey abundance, feeding or assimilation rates, and predation risk. We used hydroacoustics and midwater trawls to measure the vertical distribution of pelagic fishes during a series of research cruises on Lake Superior's western arm in 2001 and 2004. Our objective was to assess vertical structuring in the fish assemblage over varying light levels. We observed variability in vertical structuring of both ciscoes (Coregonus spp.) and their primary predator, the siscowet (Salvelinus namaycush siscowet). Our results indicate that deepwater predators and prey migrate extensively over a diel cycle. This migration pattern is most consistent with changes in the distribution of prey resources for siscowet and diel variability in predation risk controlled by changing light levels for ciscoes. The magnitude of vertical migration in ciscoes increased with higher abundance of siscowets, supporting predation risk as a driver of cisco distribution. This study describes the extent of vertical migration in each group of fish, provides a statistical description of the pattern, and discusses the implications for trophic interactions in the Lake Superior food web.

Full text
Abstract:
Alternativement, nigripinnis pourrait provenir de radiation in situ.
Laurentian Great Lakes ciscoes (Coregonus artedi, sensu lato) diversity arose via repeated local adaptive divergence. Much of this diversity has vanished or is threatened. For instance, the nigripinnis form is now extirpated from the Great Lakes but remains in L. Nipigon. Ciscoes with some characteristics of nigripinnis have recently been discovered with sympatric artedi in lakes historically covered by the Fossmill outlet, a proglacial drainage of L. Algonquin. This raises the evolutionary hypothesis that artedi and nigripinnis could have colonized the area as distinct pre-existing lineages. Hence, putative nigripinnis may represent a relict embodiment of the historical diversity of ciscoes from the Great Lakes. The objective of this research was to characterize the phenotypic diversity and the evolution of newly observed putative nigripinnis and artedi. To do so, fish were grouped by habitat of capture (benthic and pelagic) and by gill raker counts and contrasted morphologically and genetically. Differentiation within and across lakes was often observed and paralleled that of artedi and nigripinnis in L. Nipigon. Gill rakers, caudal peduncle and body depth were the most important traits differentiating cisco forms. These traits are associated with varying foraging and locomotion strategies. Genetic analyses using 6676 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) markers show that nigripinnis populations found in and nearby Algonquin Provincial Park origin from an Atlantic glacial lineage and repeated in situ divergence. Pairs of sympatric ciscoes were on a continuum of ecological, morphological and genetic differentiation across lakes. The divergence of nigripinnis could be associated to different resource exploitation, such as alternative zooplankton prey. This thesis confirms, by a comparative and integrative approach, the occurrence of a nigripinnis form with an independent evolutionary origin relatively to reference nigripinnis in L. Nipigon. The newly discovered nigripinnis populations could be source for the reestablishment of the functional diversity of the Great Lakes.

Odontogenic cysts are classified according to their origin in: developmental cysts, which include the dentigerous cyst (CD), or in inflammatory cysts, which have the root cyst (CR) as the main representative. In lesional microenvironments with low oxygen concentrations, the Hypoxia Induced Factor 1α (HIF-1) influences mechanisms responsible for cell survival. Thus, the aim of this research was to analyze the immunoexpression of HIF-1α in root and dentigerous cysts. The sample consisted of 40 cases of odontogenic cysts, 20 of CD and 20 of CR. Verification of HIF-1α expression was performed by the immunohistochemistry technique using anti-HIF-1α primary antibody (Clone EP1215Y, Abcam®, 1: 500, overnight, citrate pH 6, Pascal). Quantitative analysis was performed by counting the number of epithelial cells with immunostaining in the cytoplasm or nucleus in five fields photographed at a magnification of 400x. A qualitative analysis was also performed, observing the intensity of cytoplasmic immunostaining. The collected clinical data, such as sex, age and location site, were expressed in absolute and percentage frequency form and compared by Pearson's Chi-square test or Fisher's Exact and by Binomial Logistic Regression. The number of positive epithelial cells was expressed as mean and standard deviation and analyzed using the Student's T-test using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program. For all the tests performed, a significance level of 5% (p <0.05) was established. Immunohistochemical analysis evidenced positive marking throughout the sample. For the total number of cells with cytoplasmic immunostaining, between CR (67.7 ± 12.6) and CD (64.5 ± 16.1), there was no significant difference between the lesions (p = 0,480) and the Same result was found for nuclear immunostaining (p = 0.354). When the intensity of strong cytoplasmic immunostaining was observed and the clinical characteristics, the CD group presented a lower number of cells immunized by HIF-1α (11.7 ± 13.6) for the age group up to 30 years when compared to the age group of Individuals older than 30 years (34.5 ± 20.0), showing statistical difference (p = 0.010). When the strong cytoplasmic immunostaining was observed between the CR and CD groups in the anterior region of the jaws, it was verified that the CR group presented a greater quantity of immunolabelled cells (28.5 ± 8.5) than the CD group (14 , 0 ± 11.4), with statistical difference (p = 0.014). Considering the results obtained in this research, it can be concluded that HIF-1α is present in the epithelial constituents of CR and CD. However, further studies are needed to better elucidate the role of HIF-1α in odontogenic cysts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis deals with design and implementation of a Web page that allows the manipulation with data on a server and workstation in the laboratory. It is also possible to get more information of these stations, such as installed on the virtual systems, free space on a drive or the contents of the directory. Details of the stations provide scripts written by Bc. Jiří Homolka in a Bash language. For this reason, the work also deals with the issue of scripts to run in various modes - in the background or in the pseudoterminal. Part of this work is the formation of the database structure, which allows to trace the activities on the workstations and show the history. The web is accessible form the Internet so there was given an attention to the security and protection against attempts of unauthorized intrusion. Therefore the system can login only registered users with appropriate rights or new accounts can be created or existing modified.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study addresses the role of a Dutch chief information security officer (CISO) and the soft skills required in this leadership role. The overview of soft skills is the outcome of the CISO perspectives in a Delphi study combined with an analysis of soft skills mentioned in job ads. A comparison with an earlier US-based study revealed that soft skills are ranked differently by Dutch CISOs. Moreover, we found that soft skills are not clearly described in job ads – none of these ads had explicitly listed soft skills. The present study demonstrates that CISOs with soft skills are in demand. The development of soft skills starts at a young age through various social activities and is also the result of self-actuation. The practical implications of this study are that it offers insights into the soft skills required for the role and discusses best-fitting leadership styles and ways in which organisations should include soft skills in recruitment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to report findings from simulating and testing local area network (LAN) connectivity using Windows XP operating system and Cisco Networking Academy network devices. In this study, a simple routing protocol, RIP, is used as routing protocol. Two different techniques, Cisco Networking Academy hardware lab and Cisco Packet Tracer 4, were used to compare their performance to simulate network connectivity. Primary findings showed that the settings of the Windows XP firewall on the host computer have a direct impact on the test results. These findings are critical as there are no similar reports in the literature and only a careful investigation allowed the researchers to come to this conclusion. Furthermore, study results also offer suggestions for fixing problems that hinder simulation results of LANs that use Windows XP workstations. These findings can help CCNA students and faculty understand the reasons for unexplained connectivity problems when performing CCNA labs. The study also provides a simple method to avoid connectivity problems when using Windows ping.exe and tracert.exe which implement the TCP/IP protocol ICMP
