Abstract:
This thesis deals with the task of identifying implicit citations between scientific publications. Apart from being useful knowledge on their own, the citations may be used as input to other problems such as determining an author’s sentiment towards a reference, or summarizing a paper based on what others have written about it. We extend two recently proposed methods, a Machine Learning classifier and an iterative Belief Propagation algorithm. Both are implemented and evaluated on a common pre-annotated dataset. Several changes to the algorithms are then presented, incorporating new sentence features, different semantic text similarity measures as well as combining the methods into a single classifier. Our main finding is that the introduction of new sentence features yield significantly improved F-scores for both approaches.

Abstract:
Open access is a mechanism that maximizes the dissertation of scholarly literature world wide, by making them accessible without any financial or other barriers on the Internet. There is a rapid growth in self-archiving articles and publishing them in OA journals, which brings a great impact in research. This research is conducted to investigate whether there is an identifiable causal relationship between downloads and citations of the same articles in an open access repository, as well as the time-varying behaviours of downloading and subsequent citations if possible. To achieve such investigation, an automated monitoring web-based system has been developed for bringing downloading data and citation data together for analysis use. The result suggests that there is no significant pattern found in terms of all the monitored documents in the University of Tasmania open access repository, while this is not always the case if the scope is restricted to only thesis items.

Bellakhdar, Abdelhak. Paris 3, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA030057.

Full text
Abstract:
Romanticism is an ontopoetic refence opposable to the work of saint-john perse : while perse's ego adheres to the world which it praises, the romantic ego isolates itself, withraws from the world and submits to its tone of speech, its re-creator. Thecomparaison between the work of saint-john perse and the romantic text reveals the existence of varied and paradoxical attitudes of perse's lyricism : - firstly, a "totemic" lyricism which is responsible for a primary form of a total adhesion of the ego to the world and sign. - secondly, a "personal" lyricism in which perse's writing manages to quote romanticism while refraining from quoting the "dolorous" part. - lastly, a choral lyricism in which ego-word-sign accedes to a salutary second state. The speech betwwen inverted commas has something of the nature of these tree forms of lyricism. Semio-textually, philologically and statistically examined, it proves to be an archi-sign which lends itself to all the "persian" lyrical attitudes

Alshareef, Abdulrhman M. "Academic Recommendation System Based on the Similarity Learning of the Citation Network Using Citation Impact." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39111.

Abstract:
In today's significant and rapidly increasing amount of scientific publications, exploring recent studies in a given research area and building an effective scientific collaboration has become more challenging than any time before. Scientific production growth has been increasing the difficulties for identifying the most relevant papers to cite or to find an appropriate conference or journal to submit a paper to publish. As a result, authors and publishers rely on different analytical approaches in order to measure the relationship among the citation network. Different parameters have been used such as the impact factor, number of citations, co-citation to assess the impact of the produced research publication. However, using one assessing factor considers only one level of relationship exploration, since it does not reflect the effect of the other factors. In this thesis, we propose an approach to measure the Academic Citation Impact that will help to identify the impact of articles, authors, and venues at their extended nearby citation network. We combine the content similarity with the bibliometric indices to evaluate the citation impact of articles, authors, and venues in their surrounding citation network. Using the article metadata, we calculate the semantic similarity between any two articles in the extended network. Then we use the similarity score and bibliometric indices to evaluate the impact of the articles, authors, and venues among their extended nearby citation network. Furthermore, we propose an academic recommendation model to identify the latent preferences among the citation network of the given article in order to expose the concealed connection between the academic objects (articles, authors, and venues) at the citation network of the given article. To reveal the degree of trust for collaboration between academic objects (articles, authors, and venues), we use the similarity learning to estimate the collaborative confidence score that represents the anticipation of a prospect relationship between the academic objects among a scientific community. We conducted an offline experiment to measure the accuracy of delivering personalized recommendations, based on the user’s selection preferences; real-world datasets were used. Our evaluation results show a potential improvement to the quality of the recommendation when compared to baseline recommendation algorithms that consider co-citation information.

Abstract:

Aljabr, Fahad Saleh. "The role of citation in interdisciplinary discourse : an investigation into citation practices in the journal 'Global Environmental Change'." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8601/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes an innovative model for citation analysis and applies it to 1186 citations derived from twenty papers from one interdisciplinary journal: Global Environmental Change. The main aim of this thesis is to build, not to quantify, a model which facilitates understanding of how citations act, and are acted upon, in citing texts. The model builds on, extends and modifies certain aspects of some existing models on citation form, stance and function. This thesis argues that stance and function are different but related concepts in the analysis of citation. They operate in different directions and, when combined, can reflect the role of citation in the citing text. In order to achieve a fine-grained understanding of the role of citation, citations are analysed within and beyond the level of the statements in which they occur. To achieve this, a new level is proposed for the analysis of citation function: the ‘citation block’. In this thesis, it is argued that citations operate in different directions within and beyond the proposition-level. The current thesis aligns and compares analyses at the clause- and block-levels for every citation. This alignment results in the identification of conventional and unconventional patterns of citing. The model is applied to four sub-corpora of texts from two time periods and representing the more ‘science-like’ and ‘social science-like’ papers in the journal. The text-based analysis demonstrates the complexity of citation practices in interdisciplinary discourse. Overall it is suggested that in this journal the ‘social science’ papers over time have become more similar to the ‘science’ papers. The results also show variation in citation practices between the individual selected papers in each sub-corpus. This variation is attributed to the interdisciplinary nature of GEC. The proposed model has the potential to be used to investigate variation in citation practices beyond interdisciplinary discourse, within and between disciplines or genres.

Abstract:
The concept of health literacy finds its origins in the field of education. In its brief history the definition, structure, and direction of the field has changed dramatically and has emerged as a multidisciplinary endeavor full of discipline specific manifestations, most recently, public health literacy. Using bibliometric and citation analyses, this study investigated the field of health literacy from the first use of the term in 1974 to the present year, 2010. A range of databases from the various fields that have contributed to the field were searched using the keyword string, “health literacy.” Data was organized, cleaned and parsed using EndNote X3. A free, Java-based application, CiteSpace, was utilized for visualization of author co-citations, document co-citations, keyword co-occurrences, and document co-citation clusters. This research presents researchers, librarians and those interested in the field with information to efficiently conduct literature searches and understand the structure of the field. In addition, this research provides insight into how and where the field may be progressing in terms of multi- and interdisciplinary research.

Norris, Michael. "The citation advantage of open access articles." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2008. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/4089.

Full text
Abstract:
Four subjects, ecology, applied mathematics, sociology and economics, were selected to assess whether there is a citation advantage between journal articles that have an open access (OA) version on the Internet compared to those articles that are exclusively toll access (TA). In two rounds of data collection, citations were counted using the Web of Science and the OA status of articles was determined by using the search tools OAIster, OpenDOAR, Google and Google Scholar. In the first round a purposive sample of 4633 articles for the four subjects from high impact journals were examined, 2280 (49%) were OA and had a mean citation count of 9.04, whereas the mean for TA articles was 5.76. There was a clear citation advantage for those articles that were OA as opposed to those that were TA. This advantage, however, varied between disciplines, with sociology having the highest citation advantage but the lowest number of OA articles from the sample taken and ecology having the highest individual citation count for OA articles but the smallest citation advantage. Tests of correlation between OA status and a number of variables were generally found to be weak or inconsistent but some associations were significant. Google and Google Scholar were more successful at finding OA articles on the Internet than were OAIster or OpenDOAR. The country of origin of the citing authors for applied maths was found in order to assess whether those authors from poorer countries cited OA articles more frequently than TA articles. While cited to citing article ratios from lower income countries favoured OA articles, overall percentages gave mixed results. The data from the second round confirmed the result for sociology. The second sample for ecology was randomly taken from 82 journals and exhibited a greater OA advantage. For economics, a second purposive sample of articles from 21 mid-range impact journals was taken and also exhibited a greater OA advantage. In an attempt to establish the cause of any citation advantage, logistic regression was used to try to determine whether the bibliographic characteristics of the articles from both rounds could be used to predict OA status. Results from this were generally inconclusive.

Tarrant, David. "A study of early indication citation metrics." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2011. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/202455/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research outputs are growing in number and frequency, assisted by a greater number of publication mediums and platforms via which material can be disseminated. At the same time, the requirement to find acceptable, timely, objective measurements of research "quality" has become more important. Historically, citations have been used as an independent indication of the significance of scholarly material. However, citations are very slow to accrue since they can only be made by subsequently published material. This enforces a delay of a number of years before the citation impact of a publication can be accurately judged. By contrast, each new citation establishes a large number of co-citation relationships between that publication and older material whose citation impact is already well established. By taking advantage of this co-citation property, this thesis investigates the possibility of developing a metric that can provide an earlier indicator of a publication's citation impact. This thesis proposes a new family of cocitation based impact measures, describes a system to evaluate their effectiveness against a large citation database, and justifies the results of this evaluation against an analysis of a diverse range of research metrics

Polgar, Michael F. "Measuring scientific productivity in co-citation clusters." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43272.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines scientific productivity among authors in natural scientific reference groups. A broad literature review surveys models of knowledge production, including measures of scientific products at different levels of abstraction. Data is drawn from authors in ten specialty areas, elites identified by co-citation analysis. These co-citation clusters are analyzed in general, in disciplinary sets, and as specialty groups. Results show that variance in the productivity of elite authors is not predictable on the basis of stratification variables. Descriptive differences in disciplines and specialties reflect contextual diversity in the social production of scientific knowledge. Differences in average annual paper publication, citation and highly cited paper publication do not correspond to differences in career age, job sector or prestige of highest degree. In general, stratification by experience and affiliation is not reflected in the variation of bibliometric measures of scientific productivity. This suggests that co-citation clusters are partially comparable to general populations of science, since author productivity is not simply predicted on the basis of social stratification for either type of population. Co-citation cluster authors are heterogeneous, like scientists in general, and their bibliometric differences do not correspond to variation in experience or affiliation.

Corre, Christian. "Citation et intertextualité dans les musiques récentes." Paris 8, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988PA080252.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent music has not only been founded on the abandonment of syntactical systems and aesthetic codes inherited from the previous age : it has widely imitated, copied, alluded to the past -near or distant. However, the meaning of all these practices (extremely common throughout history) has changed with the advent of modernity, and citation in all its forms appears today as a general phenomenon, an objective effect of the musical material at a given moment ( at the turn of this century). But the legitimacy of borrowing was not assured : the discourse of musicology as a whole, wether applied to defining its object (chapter i) or to examples of creators (ch. Ii), has concerned itself with proscribing or standarding quch a practice before being able, more recently, to recognise it in its own right. It remained to interpret citation as a musical gesture : the specific character of it lies in the relation which the cited text maintains with memory and time (ch. Iii), a relation which later music will ultimately bring to light. A gradual shift will take place from reminiscence-citation to ready-made-citation : music will interest itself less with its own history than with its own reality (ch. Vii). Finally, another operation comes to double and in part support citation : transcribing (ch. Iv) as a work of writing peculiar to the musical text, and to it alone

Abstract:
We have sought to elaborate a theory of legitimate quotation from a transdisciplinary perspective in the televisual field by illustrating the limits of traditional definitions of the quotation (literary theory, legal studies and filing applications) that did not permit an understanding of the totality of quotational applications in this field [first fart]. Our argument consists therefore in not reducing the intertextual concept of the quotation to the simple appearance of a work's televisual representation in a program and in bringing out the essential principles of the reception of the televisual quotation : the quoting intentionality, the distinction between quotation-reply and quotation-performance which allows for the just appreciation of the repetition of the quotational enunciation [second part], the spectatorial recognition of the quotation starting with the understanding of its stamp and the qualities of its staging, the formal diversity of the quotational indices stemming from the semiotic complexity of the quoting text's televisual nature [third part], the pragmatic synthesis of spectatorial attitudes and the renewal of the question of the televisual quotation's functions thanks to the way we have used concepts from analytical philosophy [fourth part], the preoccupation with the differentiation between quotation and plagiarism in the case of the indices'mask of the quotational repetition [fifth part]. The consideration of the televisual quotation's conditions of possibility provides new reference points in the recent "theoretic continent" of televisual analyses and moves towards granting to the televisual acknowledgment within the institutional field of symbolic applications and of languages

Abstract:

This is a presentation of 21 slides - the corresponding full paper was first published with the Proceedings of the 2006 ASIS&T Annual Meeting (http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM06/index.html). A pre-print version of that paper is also separately available via dLIST (http;//dlist.sir.arizona.edu/1714). A new citation indexing paradigm is proposed: the cascading citation indexing framework (c2IF, for short). It improves the way research publications are assessed for their impact in promoting science and technology. Given a collection of articles and their citation graph, citations are considered at the (article, author) level. Each one article is uniquely identified by means of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI, http://www.doi.org). To identify each one author uniquely, a Universal Author Identifier (UAI) scheme is established. In addition to the citations directly made to a given (article, author) pair, citation paths that target each one citing article are also considered. The granularity of the paradigm is further increased by introducing the concept of the chord, whereby a citation path of length one co-exists with paths of length two or higher, involving the same source- and target- articles. The c2IF output emerges in the form of a medal standings table, analogous to the one that ranks teams at athletic events: when two (article, author) pairs receive the same number of (direct) citations, the one that is cited by more popular articles (i.e. articles that comprise targets to a larger number of paths in the citation graph), is assigned a higher rank value.

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the methodology at the intersection of relational and evaluative bibliometrics. Experimental investigations are presented that address the question of how we can most successfully produce estimates of the subject similarity between documents. The results from these investigations are then explored in the context of citation-based research evaluations in an effort to enhance existing citation normalization methods that are used to enable comparisons of subject-disparate documents with respect to their relative impact or perceived utility. This thesis also suggests and explores an approach for revealing the uncertainty and stability (or lack thereof) coupled with different kinds of citation indicators. This suggestion is motivated by the specific nature of the bibliographic data and the data collection process utilized in citation-based evaluation studies. The results of these investigations suggest that similarity-detection methods that take a global view of the problem of identifying similar documents are more successful in solving the problem than conventional methods that are more local in scope. These results are important for all applications that require subject similarity estimates between documents. Here these insights are specifically adopted in an effort to create a novel citation normalization approach that – compared to current best practice – is more in tune with the idea of controlling for subject matter when thematically different documents are assessed with respect to impact or perceived utility. The normalization approach is flexible with respect to the size of the normalization baseline and enables a fuzzy partition of the scientific literature. It is shown that this approach is more successful than currently applied normalization approaches in reducing the variability in the observed citation distribution that stems from the variability in the articles’ addressed subject matter. In addition, the suggested approach can enhance the interpretability of normalized citation counts. Finally, the proposed method for assessing the stability of citation indicators stresses that small alterations that could be artifacts from the data collection and preparation steps can have a significant influence on the picture that is painted by the citationindicator. Therefore, providing stability intervals around derived indicators prevents unfounded conclusions that otherwise could have unwanted policy implications. Together, the new normalization approach and the method for assessing the stability of citation indicators have the potential to enable fairer bibliometric evaluative exercises and more cautious interpretations of citation indicators.

Kavanagh, Richard Owen. "A citation analysis of "Adult education quarterly" 1971-1986." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26850.

Full text
Abstract:
Adult education has long been described as an emerging discipline, but there has been little empirical study of its emergence. This study examined 'emergence' by monitoring that particular knowledge base which is unique to adult education. Studies concerned with the theory and practice of adult education are a quantifiable indicator of unique knowledge about adult education. Evidence that researchers in adult education increasingly cite the work of other researchers in adult education would support the contention that the body of knowledge in adult education is growing. The articles published in Adult Education Quarterly between 1971 and 1986 were analyzed using citation analysis methodology. The frequency of citation to previous adult education studies (primary literature) as opposed to citation of studies peripheral to an adult education context (secondary literature) was determined. Distinguishing between citation categories was carried out by analyzing each title cited. The phenomenon of concern in the cited article was interpreted from the words used in the title, and coded dichotomously as 'primary literature' or 'secondary literature'. Each coded item was then recorded under named authors; thus, the cited author was credited for total frequency cited along with the coded category of writing (author of primary literature or author of secondary literature). Reliability measures performed for intra-judge consistency (recoding data), and inter-judge agreement (independent coding of data) resulted in differences in coding of less than four percent for the former, and nine percent with the latter. Validity of the procedures used in coding cited authors was tested by comparing results obtained to a 'standard'. 'Independent experts' were asked to identify from a list of the twenty most cited authors from each four volume period, those who were "primarily known for their adult education activities." The study's coding outcome of these authors compared with the expert's 'standard' resulted in greater than 75 percent agreement. With 4700 citations classified, it was found that a rising percentage of citations were to the "authors of primary literature"; from 41 percent of all citations in the first half of the study period (1971-1978), to 46 percent in the last half (1979-1986). A further breakdown showed the percentage of citations to "primary literature journals" also increasing; from 31 percent of all journals cited in '1971-1978' to 39 percent in '1979-1986'. As the scope of literature analyzed was exclusively from one North American journal, results need to be regarded with this limitation in mind. However, the empirical evidence of an increasing 'primary literature' base in adult education research suggests emergence of the field. Implications for future research are discussed in light of this and previous studies.

Abstract:
By its structure and by the impressive quantity of literary presuppositions that it questions, Le Livre des questions sets itself in the margins of any classical understanding of literature. For Jabes, citation holds a central place in the book: it is one of the main elements which subverts the literary text. It is not an addition, an artifice or a purely stylistic process through which the text is reinforced and given credibility: it is the essence of writing, and the understanding of its importance made it possible for the writer to continue writing in spite of what he perceived as the failure of western culture after Auschwitz. This thesis examines citation in Le Livre des questions and attempts to define Jabes' conception of the book and of writing. Le Livre des Questions encourages us to redefine citation as movement, otherness and memory.

Dufor, Sophie Pierine. Toulouse 2, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008TOU20003.

Full text
Abstract:
Jean Lorrain's interest in art, which he developed at a very early age and subsequently sustained as an art critic, enabled him to perfect his own style through contact with numerous works of art. Thus, contrary to general belief, quotation is for Jean Lorrain, an intentional and well-mastered game of literary poetics based on artistic connections. In his work, quotation responds to different horizons of expectation. It appeals either to the well-informed amateur, creating between him and the author an erudite complicity, or to the unwitting reader who enjoys beautiful watercolours and stories of a lively tone. A pretext to write, quotation outside of or within the text appears respectively as a source for and a stimulus of inspiration. At once frame and painting, the quotation in its proliferation also contributes to the Baroque aesthetics characteristic of artistic and decadent writing. This dichotomy according to textual loci hides another opposition between quotation and self-quotation which allows Lorrain to renew with the columnist's irony at the expense of his contemporaries and sometimes at his own. The irony of the quotation fuels the often critical personification of Jean Lorrain's contemporaries, whose supposed artistic erudition he mocks. Self-quotation, meanwhile, underlines self-satire through self-parodic exacerbation and triggers a liberating laugh from those whose bitter condition he mimics as he dons the costume of the tragic clown. In this way, all the pieces fit together in this nested work, which contains treasures of art and recreates them for the purposes of atonement in a salutary laugh. The quotation thus invites us to discover this disillusioned illusionist, of whom the works remembered by posterity are only the visible part of the iceberg

Abstract:
From where does come this strange feeling the surrealist texts causes us? They entice us all the more extremely that they disconcert us. This effect is reinforced as we cross this peculiar space where rustles a mysteriously plural voice: texts weaved by quotations, with words which belong to other people. The present study has as objectives to analyze the texts of André Breton from the point of view of quotation - in the double sense bf the term: form and practice - and to seize which writing strategy is there in action. From Anthologie de l'humour noir, text put together and "bricolé" with blow of heterogeneous and restricted elements, we enter the attentive decoding of deliberately discontinuous texts and try to understand what occurs through them. Research not of a new concept, but of new ways of thinking how surrealists write, this thesis tries to follow as close as possible the "phantom" which lives in texts of André Breton, who is undoubtedly not an identifiable entity, but an effect which occurs each time the practice of the quotation practices

Abstract:
CIDS (Citation Impact Discerning Self-Citation) is a web tool that uses Google Scholar as a publication database, to calculate citation impact. Others databases also exist, such as Scopus and Web of Science, but their coverage is lower than the coverage of Google Scholar, so CIDS uses the latter. Many metrics were proposed to measure citation impact, such as h-index and g-index. These metrics take into account a set of publications, usually belonging to one author, and, in case of h-index and g-index, output a single discrete number. This number is a quantitative measure of citation impact. To automate multiple metrics calculus, several tools were developed, such as HPP, Microsoft Academic and CIDS. CIDS differentiates itself from the others, by discerning self-citations. According to HPP, self-citation occurs when at least one of the publication’s authors is also author of the cited publication. The version of CIDS that was delivered to me, albeit faster than its predecessor and with a manual publication filtering process available, did not allow a user to have more than one citation impact result, that is, if the user had two groups of publications and wanted citation to be impact calculated for each one, that was not possible. It also does not allow filtering citations of publications, does not allow several queries calculus simultaneously for one user nor it works on Internet Explorer, a popular web browser. My work objective was to create a new version of CIDS that overcome the issues previously mentioned and with more functionalities. These new functionalities consisted in assigning a private area to the user for his queries, user having more control over his final results, help the user in repetitive tasks by detecting patterns in his usage and fix CIDS so that it can execute on all major browsers (cross-browser compatibility). Previous CIDS’s team functionality would also be enhanced to help the user performing group analysis faster. Even though some of the functionalities stated before - cross-browser compatibility and the help on repetitive tasks - were not implemented, the remaining ones were and, in my opinion, contributed to a better tool, perhaps a reference in citation impact tools.

Citation and co-citation analysis of bibliometrics have applied to analyzed in different academic fields and to describe intellectual map and development of specific topics. Related studies mainly analyzed the published and ranking condition of overall journals . However, little research devoted to the financial field , there is only analyzed the condition of paper presentation , and not in-depth analyzed of specific theme and key term. This study is to describe the authors who published papers included the key word of ‘Portfolio’ embedded in the nine leading financial journals between January 1990 to December 2010 and which is carried out 890 paper and 24,293 references . By using citation and co-citation analysis to explore the key research theme in this filed. The finding are as follow : The related papers of ‘ Portfolio’ are mostly from journals of FAJ, JPM and JBF. The highest frequency era of scholars publish papers related to ‘Portfolio’ is between 2001 to 2010. About the authorship pattern, The highest percentage goes to single , then two and three authors. The most cited literature show that the literature does not lose the reference value in aging. In the three studied era, there are six scholars appeal in the most cited ranking at the same time. The highest frequency of author co-citation are Fama,E.F. and French,K.R. From above results of this study which can describe all kind information and development of ‘Portfolio’ discipline through years. The objective of this study is to identify the author/journal self-citation pattern by citation analysis and context analysis on the environmental engineering key journals which were published in between year 1999 to 2008. For the level of journal comparison, journal self-citation rate, impact factor, immediacy index, and journal h-index were analyzed under the conditions of containing as well as eliminating the self-cited data. On the other hand, the correlation between author self-citation and number of co-authors, age of reference article, location of reference in original articles, and author h-index were examined in the aspect of author difference. Results suggested that moderate significant correlation existed between the journal frequency self-citing and frequency self-cited rates. Those journals with higher self-citing rate tended to be more productive. The journal self-citation rate had no significant correlation with both impact factor and immediacy index. Under the conditions of containing or eliminating journal self-cited data, a high significant correlation between impact factor and 5-Year impact factor was identified but with a significant difference in the value. Analysis on longer period of h-indices showed similar pattern as on the analysis of impact factor. With shorter citation window of h-indices, self-citation rate and h- values were observed to be moderately correlated in some years. In the aspect of author difference, the self-cited rate of multi-authored articles was higher than single-authored ones. The correlation coefficient between the number of authors and author self-citation rate was law. Self-citing references were found to be more recent than those citations to others. Authors tended to cite their own previous published works in the introduction, result, and method sections. In the sections of method, result, and conclusion, self-citing references are more common than citing to others. No matter containing the self-cited data or not, insignificant effect was found on the author h-values and h-index. However, the correlation coefficients were strong between the author h-value and both their productivity and the number of total cited times. Based upon the results, suggestions were made as follows. When evaluating the environment technology related journal publication, using 2-Year impact factor and 2-Year h-index instead of longer period ones would be adequate in the citation window setting. Impact factor, immediacy index, and journal/author h-indices seemed all robust enough against self-citation. Thus, it is not necessary to eliminate the self-cited data when doing environmental technology related journal or author evaluation. The journal productivity should be taken into account when measuring journal self-citation rates. For surveying the self-citing rationality, each article’s introduction section could be a priority target.

Abstract:
Currently, citation indexes used by digital libraries are very limited. They only provide raw citation counts and link scientific articles through their citations. There are more than one type of citations, but citation indexes treat all citations equally. One way to improve citation indexes is to determine the types of citations in scientific articles (background, support, perfunctory reference, etc.) This will enable researchers to query citation indexes more efficiently by locating articles grouped by citation types. For example, it can enable a researcher to locate all background material needed to understand a specific article by locating all "background" citations. Many classification schemes currently exist. However, manual annotation of all existing digital documents is infeasible because of the sheer magnitude of the digital content, which brings about the need for automating the annotating process, but not much research has been done in the area. One of the reasons preventing researchers from researching automated citation classification is the lack on annotated corpora that they can use. This thesis explores automated citation classification. We make several contributions to the field of citation classification. We present a new citation scheme that is easier to work with than most. Also, we present a document acquisition and citation annotation tool that helps with the development of annotated citation corpora. And finally, we present some experiments with automating citation classification.

Forthcoming in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. Abstract: The journal structure in the China Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations Database (CSTPCD) is analysed from three perspectives: the database level, the specialty level and the institutional level (i.e., university journals versus journals issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences). The results are compared with those for (Chinese) journals included in the Science Citation Index. The frequency of journal-journal citation relations in the CSTPCD is an order of magnitude lower than in the SCI. Chinese journals, especially high-quality journals, prefer to cite international journals rather than domestic ones. However, Chinese journals do not get an equivalent reception from their international counterparts. The international visibility of Chinese journals is low, but varies among fields of science. Journals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have a better reception in the international scientific community than university journals.

The object of this research is to enhance the former patent citation rate analysis method which utilizes one fixed citation window for every agency at all times by introducing a concept of dynamic citation windows and to extend the analysis for comparisons among agencies. The idea of cited half-life was adapted for patent assessment to establish a model of annually dynamic citation windows for each agency. Based on each agency’s annual citation window, its annual citation rate can then be obtained to measure its patent bibliometric performance. Because different agencies may have disparate attributes, a normalized citation rate was also proposed to measure each agency’s corresponding rank comparatively to the average of all the agencies. The dynamic citation window represents more accurately the patent citation cycle time for technology analysis which is a major research and management task in technology industry. Three industries were chosen, semiconductor, communication, and drug industry, as target agencies to study their citation window patterns and demonstrate the advantages by using dynamic citation windows for patent citation rate analysis. Their annual citation rate changes were detailed and normalized citation rates were obtained to show their corresponding ranks comparatively to the average of all industries and provide a base of cross field comparison. IBM is also taken as an agency to test and verify the cross field comparison character of nCR.

Scientometrics (forthcoming)
Based on the citation data of journals covered by the China Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations Database (CSTPCD), we obtained aggregated journal-journal citation environments by applying routines developed specifically for this purpose. Local citation impact of journals is defined as the share of the total citations in a local citation environment, which is expressed as a ratio and can be visualized by the size of the nodes. The vertical size of the nodes varies proportionally to a journal's total citation share, while the horizontal size of the nodes is used to provide citation information after correction for the within-journal (self-) citations. In the "citing" environment, the equivalent of the local citation performance can also be considered as a citation activity index. Using the "citing" patterns as variables one is able to map how the relevant journal environments are perceived by the collective of authors of a journal, while the "cited" environment reflects the impact of journals in a local environment. In this study, we analyze citation impacts of three Chinese journals in mathematics and compare local citation impacts with impact factors. Local citation impacts reflect a journal's status and function better than (global) impact factors. We also found that authors in Chinese journals prefer international instead of domestic ones as sources for their citations.

Patent citations are extensively used for measuring the importance of patents, regarded as the knowledge flow among countries and technology fields for analysis, and applied to mapping technological trajectories for studying the evolution of the technology. However, patent citation analysis is subject to some uncertainties. Many patents are cited only with slightly relevant because they are only related to one very specific technical aspect. Moreover, many patents which should have been cited are missed. This paper aims to identify the relevant citations and the relevant un-cited patents in order to present the more precise view in the citation relationships. Both of BC and CC methods are utilized to identify the relevant citations and the relevant un-cited patents. Besides, the occurrence of relevant citations and relevant un-cited patents are related to the citation time lag (CTL), which is the time necessary for the cited patent being cited by the citing patent. The results show that citations with shorter CTL are more possible to be relevant, and this phenomenon is more obvious by BC. It reveals that it takes time for any two patents to establish their CC relations. Some relevant information cannot be dug out by CC, and therefore BC is the better approach of the identification.

Abstract:
We analyze citation frequencies for two main database conferences (SIGMOD, VLDB) and three database journals (TODS, VLDB Journal, Sigmod Record) over 10 years. The citation data is obtained by integrating and cleaning data from DBLP and Google Scholar. Our analysis considers different comparative metrics per publication venue, in particular the total and average number of citations as well as the impact factor which has so far only been considered for journals. We also determine the most cited papers, authors, author institutions and their countries.

In this thesis, we focus on analyzing the various of data citation to the data repository. We think consistent practice of data citation facilitates and incentivizes data sharing and reuse because it could be counted as professional recognition for data providers as citations of journal and other types publications. The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is the worldwide repository of 3D structures of proteins, nucleic acids and complex assemblies, most of which play essential biological roles. The major data of PDB are the experimentally determined structures of protein, and are provided by unique identifiers (PDB IDs) and corresponding primary citations that make them easier to be used as the referenced data. Therefore, it could be a good practice model for data citation research. Meanwhile, our studies focus on the interplay of PDB IDs mentions recognition and references cited of the literature, and the relative importance of these two mechanisms can be expressed by investigating the data citation patterns. By exploring rich structures and related citations of PDB, we can investigate the relationships between protein structures from the viewpoint of the citation network. Moreover, the analysis of the literature and data citation networks may demonstrate potential pathways of scientific discovery, that is, how knowledge and data were used to advance a particular field in structural biology. Based on the results of analyses, we could recommend data citation and provenance practices, approaches to discover data citations, ways of linking citations and data, and data access metrics. We hope our work will benefit the data reused, experiments reproduced, and even provide machine readability for tracing the data usage.
