Leonard, Kathy. Bibliographic Guide to Chicana and Latina Narrative. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400618352.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of narrative work published by Chicana and Latina authors in the past 5 to 10 years. Nonetheless, there has been little attempt to catalog this material. This reference provides convenient access to all forms of narrative written by Chicana and Latina authors from the early 1940s through 2002. In doing so, it helps users locate these works and surveys the growth of this vast body of literature. The volume cites more than 2,750 short stories, novels, novel excerpts, and autobiographies written by some 600 Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, and Nuyorican women authors. These citations are grouped in five indexes: an author/title index, title/author index, anthology index, novel index, and autobiography index. Short annotations are provided for the anthologies, novels, and autobiographies. Thus the user who knows the title of a work can discover the author, the other works the author has written, and the anthologies in which the author's shorter pieces have been reprinted, along with information about particular works.

Peters, Pam. The lexicography of English usage. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808206.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The lexicography of English usage is often discussed as being prescriptive or descriptive, but only rarely is it analysed in terms of how usage writers use language evidence in exploring issues of current and changing usage, and whether their methodology is empirical or otherwise. This chapter discusses two twenty-first-century approaches to the use of evidence in usage writing: the selective, a priori use of citations by Bryan Garner to support his ‘Language Change Index’ in Modern American Usage (3rd edn, 2009); and the wealth of data contained in the GloWbE corpus (2012) and others created by Mark Davies, available to quantify usage trends worldwide. Corpus evidence on the assimilation of Latin borrowings, e.g. use of data in singular agreement, shows this is relatively less advanced in the US than elsewhere, which aligns with its stigmatization in American academic discourse.

Teubner, Jonathan D. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767176.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This introduction conceptually outlines and historically locates the notion of the Augustinian tradition, and explains how the theme of prayer advances and refines our understanding of this tradition. The aim of this chapter is to indicate both the distinctiveness of Augustine’s own understanding of prayer, and the continuities of this theme (and variations upon it) in those who follow him. This chapter argues that Boethius and Benedict exemplify two distinctive forms of Augustinianism, both of which influence subsequent medieval Christian thought and practice. The central analytic distinction of this study between Augustinianism 1 (citations, references, allusions) and Augustinianism 2 (use of general orientations and constellations of themes) is presented in outline. Issues discussed include the relationship between tradition and modernity, the divergence of the Latin and Greek Christian traditions’ reflections on prayer, and the history of Augustinianism as a historiographical category.

DiGiulio, Scott J. Reading Miscellany in the Roman Empire. Oxford University PressNew York, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197688267.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract Aulus Gellius and his sole surviving work, the Noctes Atticae (NA), have long stood on the periphery of classical scholarship. This second-century ce compilation, conventionally termed a miscellany, collects vast amounts of otherwise lost ancient literature, and the depictions of scholarly activity throughout the work have led some to see in Gellius a kindred spirit—a classicist avant la lettre. Yet, the NA is a fascinating work of literature in its own right, depicting the intellectual and literary culture at the height of the Roman Empire and offering invaluable evidence for the evolution of Latin prose as a literary form in the Antonine period. In contrast to previous scholarship that looks past the randomness of the NA, this book argues that the conceit of disorder enabled Gellius to probe the nature of reading in the second century ce. Gellius’ central preoccupation is articulating a distinct set of “ways of reading” that may be employed to navigate the web of literature in the Roman Empire. In turn, each of these ways of reading—through material framing devices, focal characters, recurrent citations in dialogue with one another, and allusive references to other near-contemporary works—can be used to examine Gellius’ collection and appreciate its literary qualities. Incorporating inter- and intratextual analysis alongside narratology-informed approaches, this book investigates the strategies used by Gellius to innovate within the Latin literary tradition and provides a framework for interpreting his varietas on its own terms.

Puerto, Cecilia. Latin American Women Artists, Kahlo and Look Who Else. Greenwood Press, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350520905.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume is a unique contribution to Latin American studies because it underscores the essential role that women have played in the arenas of modern and contemporary art. This book provides valuable and much-needed assistance to the researcher. (From the foreword by Elizabeth Ferrer) With more than 1,500 references on nearly 800 women Latin American Women Artists, Kahlo and Look Who Else pays tribute to the rich and multifaceted artistic accomplishments of women in and from 20th-century Latin America. Frida Kahlo has until recently dominated the interest of scholars, curators, and the public to the point of almost eclipsing the achievements of other artists from the region. This selectively annotated bibliography begins systematically to identify other women ― painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, performance artists, and others ― who have made significant contributions to the history of art in the region. The first section, the main part of the work, consists of individual artists grouped in an alphabetical country arrangement. Artists in each country are listed A-Z, as are the citations about them. Annotations are descriptive and highlight, among other details, the presence of biographical and professional development information in the analyzed materials. A section of general works arranged by country follows, consisting principally of periodical and monographic literature that deals with numerous women, and a listing of the women mentioned in the cited materials. The volume has two appendices. The first is an analyzed list of 77 collective exhibitions in which works by these women have been presented. The second appendix groups the artists by country, allowing for an in-brief look at all of the artists identified in the bibliography. The name index references artists to the main section by country code and also includes entries for authors, curators, and exhibition catalogue essayists.
