Biglu, Mohammad Hossein. "Scientometric study of patent literature in MEDLINE & SCI." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät I, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/15735.

Abstract:
This study is divided into five sections. The first section consists of patent applications and granted patents issued by USPTO, WIPO), and EPO. In this section the relationship between the GDP and country’s patent quantity is analysed. The second section analysis the patent literature in MEDLINE. In this section a scientometric analysis is performed to assess the quantitative trend of patent literature in MEDLINE throughout 1965-2005. The third section analysis the patent literature in the SCI. In this section all documents indexed as a topic of “patents” in the SCI throughout 1965-2005 are analysed. The fourth section analysis the citations to the patent documents indexed in the SCI, and illustrate the average number of cited references per paper for patent citing documents. The fifth section analysis the references per paper in the SCI through 1970-2005. The Analyses of data showed: The USA is the leading country filing and granting patents followed by Japan and Germany respectively. The half-life of citations to the patent-documents is 41% higher than the half-life of citations to the general scientific documents in the SCI. The number of references per paper from 1970 to 2005 has steadily increased. The rough constant percentage of self-citation of journals and the growing increase of references per paper led to the absolute growing number of self-citations and to the increase of the Impact Factor of the citing journals in the SCI. The editorial policy of languages is being changed in MEDLINE and in the SCI. The consideration of policy makers in these databases have been focused on the literature of science in English. There was a tendency in the last decades towards collaboration in scientific publishing with American authors that can be observed in the SCI with authors from different countries.

Abstract:
92
The objectives of this study are to investigate the scatter phenomenon by applying bibliometric techniques and to observe the change of subjects between the citing literature and cited literature of information science. This study first uses the Bradford’s Law and the Bradford─Zipf’s Law to identify the core journals of information science. Then, using the descriptors in LISA and applying the Zipf’s Law to quantitatively analyze the literature of the core journals of citing and cited literature. A total of 1,267 citing literature which was published from 1985 to 2003 were searched on Web of Science database. Moreover, 7,280 cited literature was obtained from citing literature. The results of this study reveal that: 一、The literature scatter of citing literature and cited literature on information science all show diminishing returns. 二、The scatter of literature of citing literature and cited literature on information science all don’t fit with the Bradford’s Law and Bradford─Zipf’s Law of Scattering. 三、The citing literature more scattered than the cited literature, and this result will help to accumulate the data for the future empirical studies. 四、The major characteristics of the periodicals on information science are not only professional originality but also interdisciplinary. The content of the periodicals focuses not only on the subjects of library and information science, but also on information management, scientometrics, popular science, politics, sociology, economics, history, computer science. 五、The core of the core journals identified on information science are Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, Library and Information Science Research, Journal of Information Science and Journal of Documentation. 六、The subject in common use of citing literature is professional education, and the professionals on information science more prefer to cite three subjects: 1. information work, 2. information retrieval, 3. bibliometircs and citation analysis. 七、Applying the Zipf’s Law to find the content-bearing words, corresponding to the subjects in common use of citing literature and cited literature on information, shows that the words identified by the Zipf’s Law can represent the meaning of literature.

Poulin, Mathieu.

Full text
Abstract:
Refering to the theories of Genette, Compagnon and Morawski's on quotation and intertextuality, this thesis compares two distinct, yet complementary, body of works: the major essays written by Hubert Aquin, Gaston Miron and the young intellectuals who collaborated to Parti Pris are analyzed as rewriting (or rethinking) of the works of Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon and Albert Memmi, figureheads of the francophone decolonization movement. The main objective of this study is to investigate the bases on which Québécois intellectuals attempted to justify their recuperation of the discourse of decolonization, and how this discourse shaped their reflection towards redefining Québec nationalism, as well as promoting its diffusion. Articulated around three principal axes – cultural identity, language conflicts and the role of literature and the writer in the struggle for national emancipation –, this thesis shows that the creation of such a symbolic partnership has enabled Québec to join the community of francophone nations.

Abstract:
Abstract It is frequently suggested that designing artifacts requires a deep understanding of context. We analyzed 186 papers from three specific literature searches involving a design process for global development applications. Each paper was reviewed and coded for (1) whether or not the study teams performed some level of contextual investigation, (2) the methods and/or approaches for understanding the artifact’s context, and (3) use of open-ended analysis or framework-based analysis for qualitative contextual investigation. In total, 159 papers (85%) described some level of contextual investigation with 46 of these describing performance-focused field tests in the artifact’s context of use and 113 papers using qualitative methods for contextual investigation. 18 papers used a framework, such as a cited questionnaire, for analyzing their contextual data, overwhelmingly during needs assessment and validation stages of design. We find that study teams of every paper motivated their design with contextual information, but there was great diversity in how context was investigated, analyzed, and described. Few linked their design decisions to specific contextual factors. We recommend that researchers include detailed description of methods and contextual factors considered during their design process to improve the transferability and repeatability of design approaches.

Abstract:
Biomechanics courses often attract students from diverse academic backgrounds including a mix of engineers and scientists. A Journal Club, in which students read and discuss articles from scientific literature, is a collaborative learning activity that is accessible to students from these diverse scientific backgrounds. Journal Clubs originated as way to cost-share periodicals [1] and have evolved as educational tools. Journal Clubs in medical education [2–4] are cited for both increasing medical knowledge in 88% of medical residents [2] and bridging the gap between research and clinical practice. [1] In an extensive literature review, 80% of 101 studies reported that Journal Club discussions improved knowledge and critical appraisal skills. [5] Journal Club format is flexible and no strong preference in method has emerged in the literature. [2] The present work describes a structured Journal Club that has been implemented in a biomechanics course for three years and presents results from student surveys.

This study surveys forty four project leaders of recently completed e-commerce sites regarding customer participation in e-commerce development activities. Throughout the literature for four decades, a commonly cited factor pertaining to system success has been user participation in the systems development process. The business need for a rewarding customer experience on an e-commerce site would suggest customer input would substantially influence the site design. The study finds that participation by customers in developmental activities is occurring, but at a less than anticipated rate and resulting in little influence on the design of the site.

Abstract:
This report offers a brief overview of the literature on the defining characteristics of democracy in the 21st century. This report seeks to map out a range of conceptual approaches to understanding democracy, evidence on emerging trends in democratisation, and challenges to realising democracy in its varied forms. The report begins with a discussion on definitions of democracy that have emerged in recent decades (Section 2), highlighting a range of qualifiers that are widely used to differentiate and analyse different democratic regime types. Section 3 summarises trends in key indicators of democracy from widely cited observers – The Economist Intelligence Unit and the V-Dem Institute - and recent trends in public opinion towards democracy, according to World Values and Pew Centre surveys. Section 4 gives a very brief overview of three leading challenges to democracy discussed widely in the literature – gender inequality; the role of media and social media; and declining quality of elections, freedom of expression and civic space.
