Abstract:
The most visible outcome of the increasing pace of urbanisation, along with the rise in the spate of consumerism in the liberalised economic setup, has been the sharp increase in municipal solid waste generation across the urban centres in the developing countries. As the challenge of providing this service becomes more and more pressing, municipalities are turning to the private sector to fill the gap and become the prime service providers. Privatisation of solid waste management services has thus emerged as „the‟ alternative and, as such, several municipalities have taken hasty steps to intr

With these increases in economic wealth and urbanization, people are becoming more affluent and demanding more consumer goods. Abstract:
This work has investigated the production of natural antioxidants from citrus peels, which is intended to lower the environmental impacts from the disposal of the waste and also to make additional profit for the citrus fruit industry. Regarding the extraction method, it has been found in this study that MAE could reduce the extraction time and increase the maximum extractable phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the spray-drying experiments to produce Navel orange peel extract powder resulted in yields of between 75% and 92% and the total phenolics content (TPC) recoveries of between 89% and 92%.T

Abstract:
Garbage landfills are at the heart of debates over sustainable urban development. Landfills are the cheapest waste-disposal method, but have specific environmental problems and are a common target for citizen activism such as environmental justice and Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) protests. As a means of covering up the scars at recently closed landfills, it has been common for cities to redevelop landfills into parks. The ongoing redevelopment projects at New York City's Fresh Kills, Greater Toronto's

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Municipal waste presents problems of pollution, health hazards and resource conservation. Household waste forms part of municipal solid waste that is a challenge to control due to its heterogeneity and diversity. The ever-filling landfills for the disposal of solid waste due to rapid population increase and urbanization call for urgent waste management strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle solid waste. In this study householders' attitudes, participation in recycling and willingness to participate in household solid waste

Women’s involvement in collective struggles for environmental quality has surged in recent years, as has research focusing on this phenomenon. Consistent with this research, a feminist lens is useful in revealing a model of community struggle that features women’s activities and strategies to expose environmental insult. I use a case study of community protest in Hermosillo, a city in the Mexican state of Sonora, to feature social networks as a means of politicizing the placement of a toxic waste dump six kilometers outside the city. A feminist perspective reveals these social networks to be m

The Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping was enforced in July 2009. The Levy aimed to create a direct fiscal disincentive to reduce the indiscriminate use of Plastic Shopping Bags and encourage consumers to switch to reusable shopping bags. In theory, fiscal instruments are more efficient and effective to change people’s behaviour, but its impacts towards attitude are still in question. Also, the level of green citizenship, which emphasising that people have the responsibility to protect and sustain the environment, is a good indicator to know people’s attitudes towards the environme

This dissertation examines the contestations over the politics of knowledge, risk, and environmental justice in three fenceline sites. Mobilizing the fenceline standpoint to study risk strengthens our objective understanding of the social situatedness of risk. To illustrate how a fenceline standpoint contributes to stronger objectivity of risk contestations, I survey public discourse of coal slurry extraction in Black Mesa, Arizona using an environmental justice framework. Discursive justifications for the construction of the slurry pipeline reveal how environmental injustice in the fenceline
