Abstract:
Why was an ideal of elite women's virtue promoted in London c. 1580-1630, and why was it based on their reformed piety and charity? To what extent can elite women's piety and charity reveal their religious identity, among an elite characterised as 'puritan' by contemporaries and historians? How did women practise piety and charity in a worldly City, and did they share a civic ethos? This thesis engages with historiographies of urban history, the history of charity and hospitality, and gender history. It concerns over 400 wives and widows of the 331 aldermen elected 1540-1630, and uses 78 widows' wills. Women's wills are analysed qualitatively save to consider widows' public charitable bequests. From preambles to exceptionally diffuse bequests, wills are an intimate source for studying women's religious identity through their piety and charity. They reveal women's understanding of their gender in a patriarchal society that fostered an attitude of sorority that is particularly evident in women's charity and hospitality. To study the piety and charity of aldermen's wives extra-testamentary personal evidence complements the wills. Sources written by women themselves include a household book used to reconstruct a woman's charity and hospitality, portraits, devotional works and letters. Sources of praise and abuse authored by men including Stow's Survay, funeral sermons, verse libel and verbal abuse are used to reconstruct ideals and antitypes of elite female virtue and hypocrisy, and are read critically in comparison with other sources to furnish evidence of female piety and social conduct. Chapter II-VII focus on the conforming female elite, comparing contemporary discussion of female piety, charity and religious identity to women's lives and practice in the household and the community, and Chapter VIII considers three Catholic women to ask to what extent the civic ethos shared by reformed City women could accommodate even their recusant kinswomen.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the actions that various institutions, both ecclesiastical and civil, adopted to address the social problem of "helplessness" in the first half of the eighteenth century in the Kingdom of Murcia, where most of the people suffered hard conditions of life. Charity was a active principle in Spanish society of the Ancien Regime and it allowed the poor and homeless were served. Most of the initiatives came from the ecclesiastical sphere. Thus, the cathedral chapter, the bishop or religious orders used part of their income to service the needy. But the City Council and individuals contributed to attempt that the situation of many people improve. But what has been proven is that, despite everything, the rents were aimed a fraction of what they could have used

Rana, Tasleem. "Context is all : a qualitative case study of youth mentoring in the inner-city." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2018. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/76350/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project is an extended case study design investigating the mentoring programme of Kids Company, an innovative and controversial organisation that closed during fieldwork. The study considers the programme both as a case of the larger category of ‘youth mentoring' as well as a case in itself – of a unique and situated intervention. Methods employed included participant observation and interviews with professional staff, as well as the analysis of a sample of mentoring records documenting the one-year relationship of six mentoring pairs from the perspective of the mentor. Plans to interview mentoring pairs were curtailed by the unexpected demise of the organisation, but the data set includes interviews with five new mentors and mentees. The project has developed from a collaborative studentship aimed at understanding the mentoring programme, to include a post mortem of an organisation in crisis. Thus, documentation by and about Kids Company during this very public downfall also forms part of the data set. The thesis organises its findings into three chapters with insights on the model of mentoring employed by Kids Company and the reliance of popularised ideas from attachment theory and neuroscience; insights into the mentoring relationships themselves, including the value of a middle stage of everyday ‘being there'; and critical insights into how Kids Company's approach to young people and communities simultaneously takes on representations of race and class, yet elides them. The thesis draws together critical social policy and childhood studies literature on the history of child saving interventions and representations of the child in need within society, and psychology literature on youth mentoring initiatives, in order to make the argument that mentoring must be understood as an intervention situated in time and place. The messiness, complexity, and variety of youth mentoring experiences needs to be recognised. Nevertheless, youth mentoring also has potential to be powerful and productive for all involved and the thesis reflects on both the strengths and weaknesses of the Kids Company approach to make suggestions for good practice.

Abstract:
The decades after World War II were a time of growth and change for queer people across the country. Many chose to move to major metropolitan centers in order to pursue a life of openness and be part of queer communities. However, those people only account for part of the story of queer history. Other queer people chose to stay in small towns and create their own queer spaces for socializing and community building. The Gulf Coast of Florida is a place where queer people chose to create queer community where they lived through such actions as private house parties and opening bars. The unique place of the Gulf Coast as a tourist destination allowed queer people to build and join communication networks that furthered the growth of a sense of community leading ultimately to the founding of Bay AIDS Services and Information Coalition in 1989.

This study takes Taichung Lianyu Charity as an example, which conducts the case study analysis, to sort out its valuable operational development model and provide strategies for its sustainable development in response to its developmental problems. Through organizing the literature reviews and the interviews, there are several findings as follows. First, Taichung Lianyu Charity regularly holds joint meetings of board of directors and member representatives in accordance with regulations. In addition, members in Taichung Lianyu Charity holds self-improvement activities to enhance the connections between members at their expense. Members will select charismatic persons as leaders or board of directors to recruit new members and promote the fundraising events. The work in Taichung Lianyu Charity can be divided into two sections: one is emergency assistance, and the other one is yearly low-income subsidy. Second, there are four main problems for its sustainable development: members are no longer growing, leaders are insufficient, the fundraising are decreasing, and the coherences of board of directors are no longer enough. To deal with those problems, this study provides the following strategic suggestions: First, Taichung Lianyu Charity should increase informal social activities, experience sharing sessions, and human cultivation plans. Second, Taichung Lianyu Charity should recruit more active leaders, involve the donators to charity’s activities, and use their own website to raise the public awareness. Last, Taichung Lianyu Charity should align with other social welfare groups, recruit members from small unincorporated charities to join in and endeavor to obtain government or corporate resources.

Engler, Steven. "The devil's poor and the invisible city charity, order and agency in early modern England." Thesis, 1998. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/785/1/NQ43565.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the discourses and practices of charity and poor relief in early modern England in order to characterize changing views of the relation between the individual and the basis of social order. The first part proposes a genealogy of idleness, drawing on Weber's analysis of Protestant worldly asceticism, which posits the rationalization of the conduct of life, and on Foucault's analysis of governmentality, which posits the converging governance of populations and individual conduct in the emerging early modern state. The second part considers charity as a set of transactional relations and examines changing views of the link between social boundaries and order. It then examines the increasing use of 'idleness' as a criterion distinguishing deserving and undeserving poor and traces the obverse of this process: a new emphasis on the formation of industrious habits as a means of fostering the prosperity and order of the nation. The third part argues first that puritan views of the use of time brought the invisible city into the world: a methodical conduct of life marked inclusion among the godly, linking individual agency to God's transcendent order. It then argues that this rationalization of activity through constant attention to time converged with attempts to reform and govern conduct in poor relief practices of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The ethical and temporal antecedence of the heavenly city was replaced by the antecedence of the state, whose efforts to reform the character of the poor constituted a new governance of conduct. Emerging processes of governmentality were premised on this consonance of self-interested individual activity and the maintenance of social order.

The purpose of this study has two folds. First, I will comprehensively present the rationale of the Charity Information Platform (CIP) plan by Red Cross, Taichung Branch. Second, I will describe the CIP participants of non-governmental charity organizations and their expectations to CIP. And then, I will go further to approach on integration of recourses and services through CIP in Taichung City. I utilized questionnaire survey and depth interviews, as well as the related documents to collect data. The results from data analysis are as following: 1.Providing social relief services are the main key for the CIP participants of non-governmental charity organizations. Few organizations go further for psychological care for individuals. 2.The possible corporation is information exchange, sharing experiences, and making connections among organizations. 3.Service integration shows in four dimensions: cases, programs, resources and information. There are two-fold suggestions from this study: 1.CIP running model: Red Cross has to establish operation system and then provide service programs for participants. Regular meetings are needed for better communication. 2.For participants of CIP: All participants have to be actively cooperative, care for each other and create mutual partnerships.

Based on the four social bonds of Hirschi’s social control theory, this study conducted a qualitative research through the in-depth interview method to examine and discuss the effect of Tzu Chi Foundation’s “New Bud” Project at Wanhua region. This study targeted on 11 children who have been participate in the “New Bud” Project for a long time and compared 7 families, 8 parents and 5 Tzu Chi volunteers to explain the impact of the “New Bud” Project on the improvement of the children’s social bond. The major finding of research shows: 1. The New Bud Project can reduce the difference in learning, catch up with the school work that has felt behind, develop the self-learning attitude and create the sacrifice social bond; 2. The New Bud Project can establish the involvement social bond, reduce biased behaviors and improve characters through change of attitude; 3. The New Bud Project can develop children’s positive view of life; 4. The New Bud Project can enhance children’s attachment to the volunteers through the connection between volunteers and families to build trust and establish friendship. However, it is found that the New Bud Project can’t significantly improve children’s school work performance. It is recommended that the future consulting program for assisting children from vulnerable families should focus on children’s rights and take the family as support target because the family centered social model, the connection between charity and education and volunteers can be of help to reconnect at-risk families with their communities can yield twice the result with half the effort.

This is a comparative study of a Chinese novel and a Canadian novel, which share similar theme of depicting young artists migrating from the country to cities. The purpose of this research has been to explore how the migration process affects the identities of the artists and how they negotiate their identities in the new urban environment. From juxtaposing these two texts, I want to argue that consumer culture has transformed the migrants perspectives and values, leaving them in an in-between situation as they are unable to fully identify with either home or the city and are thus forever haunted by the sense of homeless. Therefore, in order to negotiate the hazards of everyday life and to assert their sense of belonging in a complex urban setting, they use sexuality and ethnicity as points of alignment.

This paper examines humeral cross-sectional properties in two different samples of later medieval date: a group of blade-injured males from the sites of Towton, North Yorkshire, and Fishergate in the City of York, England, and a comparative group of nonblade-injured males also from the site of Fishergate in York. CT image slices were taken of the humeral shaft at 20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, and 80% from the distal end to investigate population differences in levels and patterns of mechanical loading. Bilateral asymmetry is investigated and comparisons are made with different populations of varying activity levels. Architectural changes such as humeral torsion are also investigated to determine the relationship between architectural changes and biomechanical efficiency. Results show significant differences in diaphyseal robusticity between the Towton sample and the comparative population, as well as significant differences in diaphyseal shape both between limbs within the Towton sample and between blade-injured samples. Population differences were also identified in the level of bilateral asymmetry, further demonstrating the differences in movement and activity patterns both between and within samples. These variations may relate to distinctive, more strenuous weapon use and differences in strenuous movement patterns in the two groups.

Abstract:
This report aims to demonstrate the tasks and learning done during the internship that took place in the sports division of Sintra City Council to achieve the Master degree in Sport Management. The main objective was to experience activities and tasks in sport, to understand the functioning of a local authority. The work is structured in 4 parts. Firstly, the introduction, which consists in explaining the conditions and objectives of the Internship. The second is the framing of professional practice, which underlies the tasks performed throughout the Internship and which fits the different contexts: legal, institutional and functional nature. The third part, professional realization, where I describe my tasks, some difficulties and solutions for them throughout the report. And finally, a fourth part, where I make a brief conclusion of my intervention in the division, the knowledge acquired during the internship and also the master’s, and perspectives for the future. Due to the diversity of the tasks performed, I structured the professional achievement in 3 major tasks: Sintra's sports card; LimeSurvey: online method design and collection; and the participating sport events. Using LimeSurvey has come to the need for more efficient data collection, no longer using paper, but an online collection, this will be extremely important for updating and creating new information for Sintra’s sports card, which meets the need to carry out the national sports card. The events participated were a way to get in touch with new learning, in another area, which carries out one of the sports division biggest projects, the “Sintra a Correr” trophy, is creating a sport for all for over 25 years. Local authorities play an extremely important role in the development and promotion of sport in the municipality, not only by creating sport for residents but also by building new leisure and competition sports spaces, supporting associations and use the most of natural spaces. The municipality of Sintra has these spaces, the sea and the Sintra mountain, in west, having a high growth potential.

This diploma thesis deals with the ethical issues that arise during work with Roma families. In the first chapters of the text, the work deals with the Roma, their culture, family, traditions, historical origin. The following text presents organizations that work with the Roma in the territory of the city České Budějovice, their value foundation, principles, requirements for social workers etc. These were the Sociálně aktivizační služby pro rodiny s dětmi Sasanka, Oddělení sociálně - právní ochrany dětí and Jihočeská rozvojová o.p.s. Ethical issues have resulted freely from a critical reflection of the three compared facilities working with Roma families. In the following text there are presented two ethical theories by which the selected ethical questions are further processed, deontology and ethics of care. In the last part of this work, ethical questions are further elaborated using both ethical theories.
