Abstract:
Architecture has always been about connection since its primary purpose of building a shelter for humans. Among many other things, it provides connections between people, and connections between people and the natural and built environment. The design and building process is about connection as well. We design in the present, relying on the past to build in the future. In this context, time is the strongest connection that is present in most of the built environment around us. I consider museums to be a good building type that connects people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation for the public. Since a very young age, I used to admire the buildings while walking the streets of Casablanca, where I was born. A city that is a combination of traditional Islamic influenced design and the European style of construction brought by the colonizers. My goal in this thesis is to explore, in an architectural setting, connecting the old city to the new city, and present this story to the general public.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to establish a context of the relationship between internal and external elements of a villa in Shaqra, Saudi Arabia. The study tends to represent the surrounding environment through the use of local and readily available building materials, rammed earth, in constructing the structural building walls. The walls of the villa designed to be built with the rammed earth, as they seem they grow out of the ground and belong to the ground, in which it has the same soul and character of the surrounding area.

Many cities around the United States struggle with racially segregated neighborhoods (USA on Race 2013). The existence of isolated neighborhoods continues to reinforce racial distrust and promotes stereotypes. Some of the primary negative consequences associated with residential segregation include unequal job opportunities, greater health risk, high concentrations of poverty, educational constraints, and high building and lot vacancy rates. Residential segregation is an issue in Kansas City, Missouri along Troost Avenue. Troost Avenue is a stark racial dividing line within the city core. West of Troost Avenue, whites account for 88 percent of the population while blacks make up 93 percent of the population to the east (Troost Village Community Association 2013). The intent for this project is to create a resource to help establish and promote social interaction within the Troost Avenue neighborhoods by creating a purpose-driven community garden at the St. James Place apartment complex. The site’s unique location, positioned adjacent to other apartment complexes and subdivisions in the Citadel Neighborhood, had the potential to attract many types of users to the garden site. Through a process of literature review, surveys, interviews, and precedent study analysis, design goals were established. The design proposals for the St. James Place Community Garden focus on increasing site activity, establishing accessibility, and promoting originality.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to propose possible actions in the present city as answers to fragmented and disconnected environments that emerge through specific investigations of the urban space: a city, its morphological aspects and architecture, the connections that exist among buildings and between buildings and public spaces, as well as the idea of place as a structuring element. We propose an analysis of the present city which is based on the historical revision of a certain period and that searches for some sources of its current configuration. Thus, this thesis focuses on the relationships between architecture and city from the beginning of the twentieth century to these days, and it identifies some relevant needs concerning the routes and the urban quality as a whole, aiming at specific possibilities of intervention. The understanding of the processes related to the transformation of the form landscape, the uses functionalities / meanings and of the new kinds of obtained spaces connectivity or non-connectivity of the architecture is an important aspect for the critical and practical propositions nowadays, as they are real or investigative products. Our starting point and major motivation were the observations and analyses of the fragmentation and spreading of the present city - aspects that take place especially in large cities like São Paulo. The opposition between the recurring ways of implementation of modern buildings commonly perceived as objects which are physically detached from their peers and the traditional implementations which focus on compact blocks, has originated and here they are analyzed only as far as the morphological and architectural aspects are concerned cities that collect objects placed along the streets or squares, and that usually suffer because of its disconnection. This disconnection originates a number of problems as well as the causes of a major urban problem chronic and current which is the lack of quality of pedestrian routes; this hinders people´s use of parts of the city and, sometimes, of the whole city. This characteristic together with the lack of adequate programs for public areas, as well as the bad treatment given to them, seems to create other problems to the urban system such as inefficiency of the public transportation system, urban insecurity, new forms of entertainment, etc.: these problems, roughly speaking, describe the disconnected city. Based on this, we will propose some possible actions for the current city.

Sullivan, John Austin. "A Search for Truth: Investigating the Connection Between Man, Architecture and the Universe." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35967.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of architecture is a search for the truth, conceived from a desire to understand the nature of life. Through the process of investigation, discoveries bring us closer to this understanding. Universal truths discovered within the discipline of architecture teach of the universal truths of life itself. Architecture is eternally bound to the universe. It exists as a physical reality, ultimately defined by a specific moment and position within the infinite continuum of time and space. Yet, what creates this inseparable connection between architecture and the universe? Man. Architecture exists as an offering to man. It serves as a stage on which the life of man unfolds; it is the backdrop of the human drama. It is the interaction between man and the physical environment that defines this connection between architecture and the universe. The instant that the hand of man touches the surface of a brick wall, a moment is created, eternally linking the wall to the universe. Thus, a constant dialogue exists between man and architecture. The nature of this dialogue must be explored, as it offers man the opportunity to understand his relationship with architecture on all scales (individual, community, universe). In order for this dialogue to be understood, the relationships which exist within architecture itself must be examined. These relationships exist on many scales, ranging from the connection between the column and the beam, to the relationship between a building and its city. These relationships dictate architecture's meaning. By being sensitive and perceptive of the nature of these relationships, we become closer to understanding the nature of life. Explorations of architecture allow us to question the nature of life. The search for the connection between architecture and the human condition allows us to understand the eternal connection between architecture and the universe. The search allows us to find the truth.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the incentives stemming from the electoral arena influence the behaviour of legislators in Brazil. Or, to put it differently, resorting to the now classic expression first popularised by Mayhew, the purpose of this research is to tease out the effects of the electoral connection on Brazilian legislators’ behaviour. Legislative elections in Brazil are held under an open-list proportional representation system. Theoretically, such a set of rules leads to intraparty competition and therefore campaigns heavily centred on individual candidates. A strong electoral connection, then, would come as a consequence. How, though, this electoral connection affects the behaviour of legislators has seldom been tested. The general contention guiding this inquiry consists in considering that the Brazilian OLPR system allows for the creation of several different incentives that impact how legislators behave. Overall, three essential dimensions of the legislative behaviour are studied: the stance towards the executive, policy orientation and interlegislator cooperative relationship. The task of testing this hypothesis is carried out by looking at the Rio de Janeiro City Council (RJCC). The focus, then, is on the local, municipal level – a subject hitherto largely overlooked, in contrast with the Brazilian National Congress, which has been the topic of numerous works in the past two decades. The analysis, based on multiple regressions, covers the fourteen-year period between 1997 and 2010.

Dennis L. Law
In the late 1800s George Kessler and the Board of Parks and Boulevard Commissioners (BPBC) developed a Parks and Boulevard system for Kansas City, MO laying the foundation for the city to grow. Development of the system is the result of the combination of Kessler’s ideology, as well as his planning and design practices. The parks and boulevard system established a framework giving due weight to existing conditions, adapting itself to topography, avoiding forced routes and forced construction. This framework based itself around the value of beauty, the city’s duty, the effect of parkways and boulevards on real-estate values, and the experience of other cities. Today, auto-centric sprawl has revealed its limitations, bringing focus back to the neglected urban fabric. The current urban fabric is dominated with automotive infrastructure responding only to the pedestrian where convenient or required. Results of this trend in development are concrete jungles. Unfortunately, the city character developed by the expanded parks and open space systems has been or is in danger of being lost. Opportunities for redevelopment are rising as these expansive urban infrastructures are reaching the end of their designed life cycle. As people begin to repopulate urban areas, revitalization of the parks and green space is of high priority. Adapting George Kessler’s practices, principles, and ideals behind the Kansas City Parks and Boulevard System to contemporary practices, principles, and ideals in landscape architecture will allow a designer to enhance urban centers. Using my findings, I will develop a master plan for the Kansas City Downtown Loop. By enhancing sites with parks and plazas connected with pedestrian friendly greenways, the Downtown Loop will be a safer, more pleasant place for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This Final Master Project intends to recover an industrial memory particular to the territory of the Eastern Lisbon waterfront that presently appears as a forgotten historical moment in the development and evolution of the city of Lisbon. The area between Sta. Apolónia and Braço de Prata is defined as a territory of exception, considering its particular morphology, strongly associated with the industrial and harbor development in the nineteenth century. The presence of harbor and road-railway infrastructures, created in order to facilitate and enable the transport of goods and raw materials, enhances the character of these individual parts of the city and results in the fragmentation and socio-economic alienation of the remaining waterfronts in this part of Lisbon. This project intends, therefore, to outline a strategy of regeneration and enhancement of the urban fabric, inherited from the industrialization period, as a method for the preservation of the industrial heritage and thus, the identity of the location. Similarly, intervention methods are adopted which allow to retrieve the connections between the inner city and the waterfront, through the (1) implementation of cross axes aggregators of space; (2) the creation of public space management; and (3) attribution of new functions to the existing urban fabric in order to equip the territory with attractive qualities that promote the social, economic and cultural dynamism.

Abstract:
The assignment of diploma thesis was the design of a sustainable urban structure based on a medieval city in Náměšť nad Oslavou. As part of the work, I tried to find the best solution for this solved area, which is isolated by a railway corridor and suggest a new city district based on the principle of a medieval city, which will be linked to the existing city. The proposed development of city blocks is built on a system of platforms that level the terrain within the blocks and enable optimal parking spaces and the use of commercials. This development is complemented by several blocks with villa houses and a city SPA complex. The proposal supports the construction of cycle paths that connect parts of the solved area with the Rathan recreation pond. The design also includes a large park with a lookout tower and a sports ground on the city horizon ner the SPA complex. The accent was also placed on the public area near the new railway station, which serves to gather people for cultural and entertainment opportunities. This public space should not compete with an existing Masaryk square, which fulfills a representative and administration function.

This thesis proposes that a building in a dense urban environment be used as an element that constructs the space of the city. A site was investigated to see how form could make the relationships between different parts of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts more explicit. The site was found to be a link in a sequence of public spaces that connects Harvard Square to the river. This approach works with the built environment as a field of spatial forces.

Abstract:
Local communities have the right to participate in decision-making about environmental resources near where they live. Local governments have tried to gather feedback from communities to help improve the decisions they make, but have not always done a good job getting feedback from minority or urban communities. This dissertation provides one step toward obtaining this kind of public input in a majority minority community surrounding the Jordan River in Salt Lake City. Children and adults participated in this research. I present findings from two surveys, from work with children, and from adult interviews to understand how this community relates to their local river, what they like and do not like about it, and what they would like to see improved. This research revealed that communities have both positive and negative views of the river, but overall see it as an important community resource that is highly valued. Communities would like to participate more in river decision-making and have suggestions for how they would like to see that happen. The results in this dissertation can help bridge the gap between local city government officials and this minority community to help improve the river environmental quality and connections to the community.

Abstract:
The topic of this master‘s thesis was to create a settlement structure on the territory of the cadastral territory of the town of Náměšť nad Oslavou. Specifically in the southwestern part of the town, in the places of today's agricultural areas. The main goal of the thesis is to create a quality residential structure for the entire area, which will connect to the surrounding development, to create a center with urban amenities for this newly designed neighborhood. A key aspect of the design is the transport connection to the existing road network of the city and overcoming the barrier formed by the railway line. The proposed development responds to the current and future anticipated needs of the city. Taking into account the size, the proposed area is divided into three parts with regard to the time sequence and the nature of the development. From an urban point of view, the first phase builds on the existing network of streets and creates a transition between the original and the proposed development and proposes transport connections to the area. In the second and third phase, the remaining area of the proposed area is resolved, by a system of regular streets designed in places with a small slope of the terrain, connected by short streets with a higher slope. The master‘s thesis addresses the connection between the city and greenery, increases the attractiveness of the area by designing public facilities and services and works with visual axes from the existing housing and commercial development to the proposed location.

The architecture of the economy is in rapid transformation. ' As the innovation economy is the most influential segment of the economy because it creates a ripple of value throughout the broader economy, successful efforts to accelerate innovation will have the greatest overall effect. However, these innovation actors are no longer located in just one geographical location, and the money and resources that support their endeavors are spread across multiple cities, and are continually moving between them. Increasingly today, connectivity occurs both regionally (in innovation hubs and their satellite cities) and meta-regionally (between cities not geographically proximate), and few formal policy frameworks exist to support these expanded geographic networks. Lead institutional and corporate anchors in urban markets are not effectively engaged in this dispersed economic system, further constraining growth. Current Economic Development policies have been unable to catalyze and sustain a period of real sustained growth as they are outdated, restrained by a narrow political lens, subject to regional competition, or locked in a federal policy with little financial strength to do anything impactful. Missing is a layer of meaningful connective infrastructure, to help connect players beyond 'regional clusters,' via complementary linkages and along relational networks. As these economic currents shape human behavior across geographic boundaries, our relationship to place becomes even more important- policy and programmatic instruments now need to support hyper-local place initiatives as well as hyper-linked economic actors to best grow the economy. Additionally, with the lack of granular measures of innovation output to reflect the dynamically linked system, there is inefficiency and redundancy of economic development efforts by cities. The proposed strategies for accelerated innovation will recognize the connections between these specific places, their mutual dependency and complementarity, as well as the specific urban environments in order to boosts growth and economic sustainability.

Abstract:
In a centrally located area in the city of Richmond, the youth hostel that I propose provides young people and backpackers a suitable place to stay while enjoying their journey in the historical city of Richmond. The youth hostel offers inexpensive overnight lodging and other amenities they can use for themselves such as self-serve kitchens, laundtry rooms, etc. Something that is worth mentioning, the youth hostel's site is also close by the Richmond Visitor Center. It can offer travelers some travel information or souvenir venue. Furthermore, with the distinguished site, there is another characteristic. That is, the building was built in 1963 and it represents the International Building Style. The Jackson Ward community primariry consists of tra-ditional architecture style buildings, such as Italianate and Second Empire styles. The building for this project is the only modern structure. This makes it stand out and give the impression of an emotionless institution. Therefore, there is no doubt that the International Style building holds a place in this community. So, how can the community embrace this site? How do the characteristics of Jackson Ward integrate with my building? And how can the archi-tectural style of this building relate better and warm up to the residents? By transforming the residential design elements in Jackson Ward Area, my endeavor is not only to create a welcoming youth hostel inside the building but also to introduce Richmond's history and famous spots to travelers. While more people visit the youth hostel, more people will know about Jackson Ward, and the city of Richmond.

Abstract:
Ainda nesse primeiro momento, identificamos e avaliamos as principais características do operativo bem como a atuação do Uruguai e do Brasil dentro desse marco.
This dissertation has for objective to analyze the factors that determined the historical peculiarity of the kidnapping of Uruguayans, in November 1978, in Porto Alegre city in mark of repressive connection between Brazil and Uruguay under coverage of Operation Condor. This analyze is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the context of the South Cone of Latin American in the 1960s and 1970s, when the deployment of civil-militaries dictatorships of National Security, as well as the beginning of the repressive connection from of the coup of State in Brazil. The formalization of Condor Operation, in 1975, qualify resize and up that experience for regional collaboration, reality until so, country by country. Even at this first time, identify and evaluate the main features of operating as well as performance Uruguay and Brazil within that framework. The second chapter specifically the kidnapping of Uruguayans in Porto Alegre, since its planning in Uruguay until its execution in the state capital. It analyzes the attempt to organize a relative Uruguayan resistance in Rio Grande do Sul, in the final 1970s, theirs links with the Brazilian opposition and, consequently, the repressive actions joint of the DOPS / RS and Compañia de Contrainformaciones. These repressive structures were the face of regional TDE against Lilián, Universindo, Camilo and Francesca. Also in Chapter 2, point out and dissect the so-called diversionary hoaxes created to confuse public opinion, to manipulate the information and to make impossible the investigation and accountability of officers and officials authority involved in the kidnapping. Finally, the third chapter analyzes the implications of the kidnapping in Porto Alegre and bring out the crucial highlight of the press, of the OAB-RS, of the Legislature and of theMJDH, generating an unprecedented climate, until then, of offensive of democratic sectors join to public opinion and against the repressive politics of silence or misrepresentation of dictatorships involved. The chapter covers, finally, the moment of accountability of the Brazilian State face a crime against humanity.

This thesis explores the idea of the conduct of science and how people come together in order to share knowledge in the working place. The building is a framework or setting for activities that support the ideas of scientific inquiry. The seven story building on a street corner in West Philadelphia is divided into horizontal zones or realms. The ground floor is dedicated to retail trade allowing for the continuous net of city activity to pass through the building. The main entry is narrow in order to avoid interrupting this continuous city net. The second and third floors are dedicated to bankers and brokers. the industry which is both private and public. The upper floors house the private research laboratories. Elevators carry scientists to these upper levels. In order to encourage gathering and exchange among scientists. a sky lighted stairwell links the three floors. In addition. on the north side is a meeting room from where scientists might gather to exchange ideas. The view from the meeting room is to the east. towards city hall and the central business district, symbolic of their relationship to the larger world beyond their own world of scientific inquiry.

Abstract:
Stockholm is an archipelago of islands connected by water that historically has been an important resource for the city and for the industries, which found an easy access for ships and therefore they settled on strategic positions along the edges. This thesis investigates the topics of water, industrial heritage and edges in the city of Stockholm: these aspects are strong in their individual identity but they also interact in a powerful and interesting way. This work intervenes where this pattern is still visible -due to the presence of water and industries- but not accessible because it lacks the third element of connection with the city. The aim is therefore to investigate strategies that increase and reconnect the potential of these aspects that got disconnected through time. To obtain accessibility and usability, the edge was transformed and redefined to enhance the experience of walking along it. An analysis was carried out and a proposal was designed for the site of Lövholmen, which has these characteristics -the water, a strong industrial heritage and proximity to the city- that are now disconnected. The opening of the edge and possibilities of walking will transform and reconnect the site - and the richness in it- with the city of Stockholm.

Abstract:
During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, the City of Ottawa implemented a program to disseminate vaccination clinic information using the microblogging tool Twitter. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and evaluate whether this program constitutes a communicative model. The challenge for crisis communicators has been to convince a confused and skeptical public to be vaccinated against the virus. Drawing on Aristotle’s Rhetoric and Rousseau’s The Social Contract, the theoretical framework of this thesis feeds from Heidegger’s (1977) views on technology, new media, Web 2.0 technologies, Eid’s (2008) Crisis Decision-Making Model for Media Rational Responsibility, Rowan, Botan, Krepes, Samoilenko and Farnsworth’s (2008) CAUSE model, Crozier’s (1967) Theory of Bureaucratic Dysfunction and New Public Management. The thesis employs a case study approach and utilizes a qualitative research design to analyze the Twitter messages and internal City of Ottawa documents, and to conduct in-depth interviews with employees. Findings reveal and explain that the City of Ottawa’s program constitutes a flawed communicative model. A recommended communicative model is put forth in order to improve the areas of planning, human resources and message design. This model contributes to the emerging field of social media, and is intended to help health crisis decision-makers communicate their messages effectively.

Abstract:
In the first decade of the twentieth century Rio de Janeiro went through an important urban reform. Paris was taken as a model in the city’s modernization process. The habits of the European bourgeoisie had determined the new costumes adopted by the elites settled in the Brazilian capital. This study intends to analyze the relationship between changes in the physical space of the city and transformations in dress codes and behaviors. For this purpose, concepts of civilization and modernity found in articles about fashion, in social columns and in publicity have been studied. Such concepts had a decisive role in the configurations of urbanism, architecture and personal appearance that came to define some of the most salient carioca’s features.

Abstract:
Bandung is the capital of the West Java province in Indonesia; the country's third largest city and second largest metropolitan area. I live and work in Bandung and see a great potential for the creative industries. The creative industries is already developing, but organically and can only manage to grow to a certain level. Further progress enabled by developing a better strategy needs to be put forward. The strategy also aimed to influence regional and national approach in developing the creative industries. This thesis is organized around three primary objectives which are (1) The history and current condition of the creative industries; (2) Issues in optimizing the development of the creative industries; and (3) Possible framework for development strategies. The research is informed by an analysis of empirical and conceptual studies from a whole set of subjects including the concept of creativity, creative industries, creative economies, the concept of creative cities and the relations of cultural industries to cultural policy. The research is based on a study of key players using surveys, case studies and in-depth interviews to obtain information and capture the knowledge, understanding, and experiences from the respondents regarding the creative industries in the city. The method is mainly influenced by subjective theories approach from Norbert Groeben (1990) to study and investigate everyday knowledge. The thesis concludes by revisiting the empirical findings from an analytical standpoint grounded on the reasoning and on the evidence presented. Concluding observation indicates that there are four key areas of strategies which are (1) Trust building; (2) Governance and engagement; (3) Physical evidence; and (4) The soft infrastructure. It is believed that not a single policy measure will be able to fully optimise the development of creative industries. Rather, a creative industries development strategy contains a collection of different elements.

ABSTRACT: This Final Project Master aims to improve the relationship between the city and the river within the territory of Ajuda and Belém, and also, develop strategies for the rehabilitation, requalification and improvement of the transversal streets that establish the link between the waterfront of Belém and Alto da Ajuda. The intervention area, between Alto da Ajuda and the waterfront of Belém, is characterized by the prevalence of major cultural facilities, such as Mosteriro dos Jerónimos, along the riverfront and the University Campus in Alto da Ajuda, leaving between these two hubs a void in terms of activities. This paper aims to define an intervention strategy for the territory that establishes links between the existing attractive hubs, with the creation of new activities and requalification of public spaces, in order to unify the territory and promote closer ties between the city and the river. The solution found for this territory aims to fill the void spaces and expecting spaces, with the creation of quality public spaces and the introduction of new economic, social and cultural activities capable of attracting different types of users and promote mobility between the poles of attractiveness created.

Abstract:

The fractured form of the post-apartheid South African city, created by city planning laws based on racial segregation, sustains inequality. Under apartheid, neighbourhoods were designed to exist in isolation. This isolation was created and reinforced by infrastructure and large areas of open space. This project recognises that residual space created by the highway could be an opportunity to stitch together the urban fabric. The project aims to address these spaces by using program to create connections. It finds its program in a sports centre on the border between Bonteheuwel and Langa. By understanding how our cities came to be fragmented globally, and its impact in South Africa, this project unpacks case studies that have created connections, extracting strategies that are useful and can be adapted in the South African context. It reviews literature that highlights new thinking about the city and the shift in the planning agenda from separation to integration. The project aims to address the separation between the two neighbourhoods of Bonteheuwel and Langa. It does this by transforming a road that divides, into a connective street; and by inhabiting the buffer zone with program in order to create an active landscape. The strategic choice of site is at an intersection of a new connection made into Langa, and presents the opportunity to address both these conditions of road and buffer zone. By creating an active street edge, the urban fabric becomes continuous between Bonteheuwel and Langa. The precinct has been designed so that the landscape offers the potential of connection by being programmed with urban agriculture, sports facilities and recreational space. These two predominant ideas prompted the conceptual understanding that the building becomes the transition between urban edge and landscape. A ramp is used as a mediating device to negotiate level changes both from inside to outside, as well as navigating the internal topography of the building. By recognising the opportunity of these residual spaces alongside the highway, these sites can be used to stitch together the isolated neighbourhoods in our city.

Mostra também a aquisição de conhecimentos geométricos diversos, com sentido, e o desenvolvimento de atitudes favoráveis; Supervising Teaching Practice in Pre and Primary School Teaching: To develop a mathematics view upon the town architecture Abstract: This report is part of the curricular unit of the Supervised Teaching Practice in Primary and Preschool Teaching. The main purpose of this research is to understand children’s development who explore mathematics connections with the architecture of the city of Évora, namely focused on the awakening of their mathematical look and on the development of some geometric concepts, in order to develop some knowledge to my teaching practice. Within this action-research performed on the two concepts of the Supervised Teaching Practice, the children’s productions resulting from intentional proposed tasks revealed to be very important. This investigation reveals the mathematics connections potential with the architectural heritage, allowing children to develop a “mathematical look”, showed not only on the identification of maths in some buildings, as well as some building support. It also reveals the acquisition of several meaningful geometrical knowledge and the development of favourable attitudes.

Abstract:
Ön is an island in central Ume River. Today Ön is a rural, green place with key habitats and historical values. In 2008 the municipality took the decision to exploit it by building city there. The decision was preceded by the emerging growth target, for Umeå, to become 200,000 inhabitants in 2050.               The research material for this paper consists of legal documents, reports, literature, interviews, and own observations. It can be divided into three main parts. The first part, which is the ‘growth discourse’, is investigated through documents concerning political strategies and influences from within the field in relation to Umeå as a city. The second part consists of research around the ‘image’ of Norrland and the third part focus on questions involving well-being through nature and the concept of Ecosystem Services, in relation to Ön.               In this paper, I advocate for an alternative plan concerning Ön and its unique set of qualities: the rural, historical, and nature dominated atmosphere adjacent to the city of Umeå. I argue that the value of this land is greater in its natural vesture, than it would be with added asphalt and concrete. The values of concern are non-monetary, but might as well become monetary in the more long-term scenario. There is mounting evidence of benefits derived from nature, when it comes to human well-being, and further that ecosystems provide services of major importance to us. Ecosystem Services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems. Ön possesses many of these services today. It holds potential for further cultivation and capacity to become amplified as a recreation area in central Umeå.               The objective of this master thesis is to define and validate the qualities of Ön; and further, to develop a programme of possible interventions, in order to preserve and intensify the present atmosphere. This is conducted by identifying Ecosystem Services in the current context; and ways to enhance them, in order to propose an alternative plan for Ön.

LaRoche, Lealan Dorothy Marie. "Rethinking downtown highways." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37180.

Full text
Abstract:
Freeways have had a strong influence not only on the urban transportation but also on downtown areas both physically and socially. Certainly, they have extended the commuting limits of the city and made lower land costs more accessible. However, many of the mid-century freeways, once championed by planners as tools for urban renewal, have created swaths of blight through city neighborhoods. Their negative impacts on the larger urban framework requires new ideas for healthier alternatives to aid in preserving and building sustainable cities. Removal of any downtown highway requires careful thought— even more consideration than when it was built. Quick solutions are what resulted in the problems that downtown highways of the Interstate-Era have today. If it is the simple interactions between people and place are that make up the positive aspects an urban environment, then what are the possibilities and strategies for removing urban highway, which are one of the primary impediments separating people in place in contemporary cities? This question is the focus of this thesis. At its core, the removal of freeways represents a trade-off between mobility objectives and economic development objectives. Evidence from other cities’ decisions to redesign or remove their downtown highways suggests multiple benefits. Making design changes, such as to replace a downtown highway with a well-designed surface boulevard, can stimulate economic activities without necessarily causing traffic chaos. Solutions come in different shapes and sizes. The selected case studies in this thesis reflect a diversity of approaches – suggesting no single strategy exists for addressing downtown highway issues. This reflects the fact that multiple alternatives must be considered in every situation because each approach varies in costs and opportunities. A typology of highway alternations derived from the case studies includes seven different techniques: burying, demolishing, taming, capping or bridging, elevating, retaining, and relocating. The final chapter applies the conclusions from the case studies to the Downtown Connector– Interstate 75/85– in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Urban design and transportation planning has an emerging new set of values. Transportation planning is seeking to promote alternate modes of transportation to the private vehicle, like transit, by foot, or by bicycle. We now understand that connectivity is not served only by highways but also by urban street networks that invite modes other than just automobiles. An important role for urban design will be to shape the way these interactions are made to benefit the citizens, its urban spaces, and the economy.
