Abstract:
The transition of a city to a smart city depends on the preservation of open spaces because they can ensure both a safe and a quality living. In a smart city context, it is important for planners to pre-allocate resources during planning phase in order to satisfy the demand during catastrophic events. Geo-computation approaches can contribute towards the spatial-optimization of urban open-spaces for evacuation purposes in cases of catastrophic events. This work will use a location allocation spatial model to facilitate the planing of urban evacuation actions in Mytilini, Lesvos, Greece. Spatial analysis techniques have evolved during the last decades, mainly due to increased computation resources and other complementary technological advances. In this article, the authors attempt to show the contribution of spatial analysis in emergency management planning towards the smart city vision.

Abstract:
The text is focused on ideals and values hidden under the Soviet period city planning. Soviet urban planning visions of the first half of the 20th century were balancing between naive fiction and visionary concepts. Of course, the industrial building methods and functionalist city models were present not only in the Soviet Union, but in this country especially they were transformed and adapted to the specific political and social situation. Economic aspects dominated the city planning of the Soviet era, but transformations of cities on such a scale were impossible without utopian thought. Visions by soviet architects and planners have already become a part of the legend of mass housing, still not properly discussed. Article in Lithuanian.

Abstract:
Third Generation cellular networks (3G) were developed with the aim of offering high data rates up to 2Mbps and 384Kbps for stationary and mobile users respectively which allows the operators to offer a multimedia connectivity and other data services to the end customers. In this work we apply techniques to design a 3G radio network, in particular we study the planning and implementation in developing countries, and state of Palestine as a case study. In order to carry a 3G radio network planning for a selected regions, we must follow a roadmap consists of set of phases; First of all, we must determine the region under study on the digitized map in order to obtain some useful information, such as the area distribution; thus using digital maps gives a good clearness for areas classification, land use, land terrain, heights, vectors, etc. Also we must forecast subscriber profile to perform coverage and capacity dimensioning process to achieve nominal cell plan. This paper work studies Nablus as one of the major Palestinian cities. then, subscriber forecast profile is applied in order to calculate the service traffic demand, the capacity and and coverage requirements, this study is carried in corporation with Wataniya which is one of the leading mobile telecommunication service provider in Palestine. For Nablus city we’ve found that 28 sites are required to be installed to meet the given capacity requirements, on the other hand 46 sites are for coverage. At this point we should make decision about how many site will be implemented. In general we have to select number of sites relative to coverage requirement; so to serve Nablus city by 3G services we should implement 46 sites. At final stage, we have to be sure that our proposed 3G network is suitable not only for the first year of running the 3G services over the deployed network, our design takes into consideration the growth of subscribers number and their demands, so periodically, the networking administrators and the network planning department, assess the network current status and upgrade the network to meet the future demands.

Abstract:

The present study aims at understanding urban mobility in Goiânia and the contributions provided by the corridors created for public transportation. The concept and history of mobility were researched, going back to the formation of urban settlements, the evolution of the means of transportation and the negative impact generated by the increasingly intense use of motorized transport. Based on significant experiences at global, national and local scales, the study highlighted several alternatives used to mitigate the negative externalities created by the excessive use of motorized vehicles in the cities. Giving priority to the pedestrias, to non-motorized means of transportation and public transport were some of the strategies used in the three scales. In Goiânia, as well as in other cities, priority was given to public transport, by the creation of exclusive or preferential bus corridors. The results point to a better ordering of the traffic, with a more inclusive and equitable distribution of the street space.

Abstract:
When we think about health, the first topic coming to mind is medical professionals, hospitals and clinics that treat the disease. We do not bind up urban planners together with public health concerns. But what if the planners are invited to contribute to preventive medicine? How to adopt urban plan strategies that lead to healthier lifestyles ? Since the combined actions of public health and urban planning fought against epidemics and improved living conditions in crowded cities of the late 19th century, the two disciplines have been both separated from each other. If medical profession and urban planners share similar tenets and strive towards the same goals, their methodological approaches are different. However, decades later, the two disciplines have to be reunited to address new epidemics such as chronic diseases (asthma, allergies), as well as cancers, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, diabetes and obesity, which seem related to pollution (air, water, soil) and physical inactivity. If sustainable development has focused on preserving the environment, it has neglected the challenges facing underprivileged population. The territorial inequality worsens in terms of public health. The growing trend of certification and standardization in sustainable development can be seen as an opportunity to promote public health resilience. Should collaborations between public health professionals and planners encourage the approximation of their strategies

Abstract:
Nacka should become an apprehensible city. This thesis aims to create a basic, strategic framework and approach described as a set of strategies and principles which will be used to make a design proposal. The strategies and principles will be used to identify and understand the barriers (e.g. highways, hills etc) and possibilities (e.g. existing urban areas, public spaces, green paths etc) of and for Nacka City’s spatial development and to reach a criterion for densification and “city making“ (concepts from Nacka’s “FÖP”). The main concern is to identify and investigate the barriers, functions, values and assets of Nacka (and its connections to Stockholm) as well as the general goals set up by the municipality. By understanding the existing conditions, and to be aware of the future evolvement and development of Nacka, I will try to identify and locate appropriate locations for urban growth and densification. This location/s, depending on the strategies and principles revealed by the framework, will then be presented as a design proposal.

DeRobertis, Michelle, Christopher E. Ferrell, Richard W. Lee, and David Moore. City Best Practices to Improve Transit Operations and Safety. Mineta Transportation Institute, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.1951.

Full text
Abstract:
Public, fixed-route transit services most commonly operate on public streets. In addition, transit passengers must use sidewalks to access transit stops and stations. However, streets and sidewalks are under the jurisdiction of municipalities, not transit agencies. Various municipal policies, practices, and decisions affect transit operations, rider convenience, and passenger safety. Thus, these government entities have an important influence over the quality, safety, and convenience of transit services in their jurisdictions. This research identified municipal policies and practices that affect public transport providers’ ability to deliver transit services. They were found from a comprehensive literature review, interviews and discussions with five local transit agencies in the U.S., five public transportation experts and staff from five California cities. The city policies and practices identified fall into the following five categories: Infrastructure for buses, including bus lanes, signal treatments, curbside access; Infrastructure for pedestrians walking and bicycling to, and waiting at, transit stops and stations; Internal transportation planning policies and practices; Land development review policies; Regional and metropolitan planning organization (MPO) issues. The understanding, acknowledgment, and implementation of policies and practices identified in this report can help municipalities proactively work with local transit providers to more efficiently and effectively operate transit service and improve passenger comfort and safety on city streets.
