Abstract:
Following most democratic coups, the military manages to secure exit benefits, which, depending on their degree, may foster various dysfunctions in the political system and undermine long-term democratic development. The dose determines the toxicity. A democratic regime can mature even with prerogatives for the military, as long as those prerogatives don’t interfere with democratic notions of civilian control of the armed forces. Although these prerogatives are often undesirable from civilians’ perspective, any attempts by civilians to immediately march the military back to the barracks empty-handed can prompt a backlash from the military leaders. They may dig in, rather than give in, and derail the transition process. And from civilians’ perspective, the military’s exit with benefits is often better than no exit at all.

Abstract:
All coups, democratic and nondemocratic alike, can beget future coups. A coup shatters the illusion of civilian control of the military. As a result countries that have recently undergone a coup are more likely to experience future coups. Following a coup, the military may realize the future possibilities its domestic interventions can spark. For some coup makers, their retreat following a democratic coup may represent a capitulation—a premature withdrawal from a revolution unfinished. They may give up power on paper but keep a watchful eye on civilian politics, awaiting the right moment to strike. A democratic coup against a dictatorship may be followed by a nondemocratic coup against an elected government.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses how camps functioned as sites of rebellion and daily acts of resistance. As camps transitioned from military to civilian control, they developed conflicting regimes of discipline with competing definitions of physical and political freedom. Camp authorities and refugees struggled to determine whether refugees could enter and leave the camps freely, and if they could choose where and when to settle. The chapter considers how camp authorities sought to limit refugees’ freedoms and what rationales they offered—within a liberal democratic society—for these restrictions. In Britain, refugee camps dramatized the tensions around mobility (physical, social, and political) that characterize democratic states and selves.
