Abstract:
Receptor-mediated activation of heterotrimeric G proteins leading to dissociation of the Gα subunit from Gβγ is a highly conserved signaling strategy used by numerous extracellular stimuli. Although Gβγ subunits regulate a variety of effectors, including kinases, cyclases, phospholipases, and ion channels (Clapham, D.E., and E.J. Neer. 1993. Nature (Lond.). 365:403–406), few tools exist for probing instantaneous Gβγ-effector interactions, and little is known about the kinetic contributions of effectors to the signaling process. In this study, we used the atrial muscarinic K+ channel, which is activated by direct interactions with Gβγ subunits (Logothetis, D.E., Y. Kurachi, J. Galper, E.J. Neer, and D.E. Clap. 1987. Nature (Lond.). 325:321–326; Wickman, K., J.A. Iniguez-Liuhi, P.A. Davenport, R. Taussig, G.B. Krapivinsky, M.E. Linder, A.G. Gilman, and D.E. Clapham. 1994. Nature (Lond.). 366: 654–663; Huang, C.-L., P.A. Slesinger, P.J. Casey, Y.N. Jan, and L.Y. Jan. 1995. Neuron. 15:1133–1143), as a sensitive reporter of the dynamics of Gβγ-effector interactions. Muscarinic K+ channels exhibit bursting behavior upon G protein activation, shifting between three distinct functional modes, characterized by the frequency of channel openings during individual bursts. Acetylcholine concentration (and by inference, the concentration of activated Gβγ) controls the fraction of time spent in each mode without changing either the burst duration or channel gating within individual modes. The picture which emerges is of a Gβγ effector with allosteric regulation and an intrinsic “off” switch which serves to limit its own activation. These two features combine to establish exquisite channel sensitivity to changes in Gβγ concentration, and may be indicative of the factors regulating other Gβγ-modulated effectors.

An active clamp, three-phase, six-switch power factor correction rectifier with a one-cycle controller is proposed, which can effectively suppress the reverse recovery of the reverse parallel diode of the bridge arm switch and reduce the reverse recovery loss. The main switches and auxiliary switch are both zero-voltage switches. It works in a fixed switching frequency and low power stress during the switching period. The specific working process and control circuit are analyzed in detail, and the model simulation is carried out. The experimental platform of a 2.5 KW prototype, with a complete test and verification of the soft switch technology proposed in this paper, was set up in the laboratory.

Abstract:
A novel Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) quasi-resonant active-clamp phase-shifted full-bridge converter is presented and analyzed in this paper. In the proposed topology, an active-clamp switch and a clamp capacitor that resonates with the leakage inductance of transformer are employed at the secondary side. The active-clamp circuit helps all of the primary switches in achieving both zero-voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on and nearly zero-current switching (ZCS) turn-off over the entire load range, and resets the primary current during the freewheeling interval. The operation of the active-clamp circuit eliminates voltage ringing across the rectifier. In addition, the secondary diodes can achieve ZCS turn-off, which removes the reverse recovery problem of diodes, and the active-clamp switch can achieve ZCS turn-on. A 3.5-kW prototype was built to verify the performance of the proposed converter. A maximum efficiency of 97.6% was achieved under a 2-kW load, and an efficiency of more than 96% was achieved even under a light load.

Abstract:
Conventional Active Clamp-Forward topology is studied for a satellite converter owing to its comparitively simple structure, minimum number of components and fine clamping capability concerning its switch voltage stress. However, it has a high switch voltage stress,a high di/dt level and has pulsating input current shape. These are disadvantageous with respect to the EMI filter size and high input voltage converter applications. To get the better of these drawbacks, a new ACF topology with a continuous input current waveform is proposed . By this proposed waveform ,the voltage stresses on the main switches are relieved. This is crucial reliability of satelite FET switches, by utilizing a two series connected structure. These conditions will allow the proposed converter to serve as a high input voltage, high power density satellite converter.

This paper presents a high gain DC-DC converter which uses a clamp circuit to achieve soft switching. The proposed converter is designed to supply a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp used in automobile head lamps. The converter operates from a 12V input supply and provides an output voltage of 120V at 35W output power. A clamp circuit consisting of a clamp capacitor, clamp switch and resonant inductor will help to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) of the both main and clamp switches. The practical performance of the converter was validated through experimental results. Results obtained from the prototype hardware prove that the converter meets the requirements of HID lamp application and can be a very good alternative to existing converters.

Abstract:
An active clamp boost converter with blanking time auto-tuned is presented herein, and this is implemented by an additional auxiliary switch, an additional resonant inductor, and an additional active clamp capacitor as compared with the conventional boost converter. In this structure, both the main and auxiliary switches have zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on as well as the output diode has zero current switching (ZCS) turn-off, causing the overall efficiency of the converter to be upgraded. Moreover, as the active clamp circuit is adopted, the voltage spike on the main switch can be suppressed to some extent whereas, because of this structure, although the input inductor is designed in the continuous conduction mode (CCM), the output diode can operate with ZCS turn-off, leading to the resonant inductor operating in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), hence there is no reverse recovery current during the turn-off period of the output diode. Furthermore, unlike the existing soft switching circuits, the auto-tuning technique based on a given look-up table is added to adjust the cut-off time point of the auxiliary switch to reduce the current flowing through the output diode, so that the overall efficiency is upgraded further. In this paper, basic operating principles, mathematic deductions, potential designs, and some experimental results are given. To sum up, the novelty of this paper is ZCS turn-off of the output diode, DCM operation of the resonant inductor, and auto-tuning of cut-off time point of the auxiliary switch. In addition, the efficiency of the proposed converter can be up to 96.9%.

Abstract:
A novel interleaved high step-up DC–DC converter applied for applications in photovoltaic systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed configuration is composed of three-winding coupled inductors, voltage multiplier cells and a clamp circuit. The step-up voltage gain is effectively increased, owing to the voltage-stack and voltage-lift techniques using the voltage multiplier cells. The leakage inductor energy is recycled by the clamp circuit to avoid the voltage surge on a power switch. The low-voltage-rated power switches with low on-state resistances and costs can be used to decrease the conduction losses and increase the conversion efficiency when the voltage stresses of power switches for the converter are considerably lower than the high output voltage. The reverse-recovery problems of diodes are mitigated by the leakage inductances of the coupled inductors. Moreover, both the input current ripple and the current stress on each power switch are reduced, owing to the interleaved operation. The operating principle and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are thoroughly presented herein. A controller network is designed to diminish the effect of the variations of input voltage and output load on the output voltage. Finally, the experimental results for a 1 kW prototype with 28–380 V voltage conversion are shown to demonstrate its effectiveness and performance.

Abstract:
Automated solutions such as robotic vacuum cleaners and smart lighting are gaining popularity, both in the home as well as in public environments. The purpose of this project is to investigate the possibility of using a microcontroller to, in a user-friendly way, control a blind and to implement a sound sensor to activate the mechanism. A stepper motor was used to drive the blind and control its position. The prototype was programmed to recognize a sequence of two claps within a specific time interval. To make the prototype more user-friendly a UI was implemented with an LCD-display and mechanical buttons. A menu was designed where the user would be able to change settings such as the sound level threshold and motor speed as well as calibrate the position of the blind. The performance of the prototype was evaluated by testing the audio recognition by attempted activation in a quiet environment and by recording accidental activations in a loud environment. The conclusions drawn from these test were that the sound recognition was implemented and operated with a success rate of up to 73 %, but that it also triggered relatively easily by extraneous sound sources. Future improvements to this problem could include implementation of a band pass filter to further optimize the sound recognition to the desired audio cue.

analysis, design and implementation of a DC-DC converter with active clamp forward topology is presented. The main objective of this thesis is generating a rectified sinusoidal voltage at the output of the converter. This is accomplished by changing the reference signal of the converter. The converter output is applied to an inverter circuit in order to obtain sinusoidal waveform. The zero crossing points of the converter is detected and the inverter drive signals are generated in order to obtain sinusoidal waveform from the output of the converter. Next, the operation of the DC-DC converter and sinusoidal output inverter coupled performance is investigated with resistive and inductive loads to find out how the proposed topology performs. The design is implemented with an experimental set-up and steady state and dynamic performance of the designed power supply is tested. Finally an evaluation of how better performance can be obtained from this kind of arrangement to obtain a sinusoidal output inverted is thoroughly discussed

This work presents the development of oscillators and ampli?ers build around new ytterbium rod type ?ber. These ?ber systems generate high average power generation. The oscillator makes it possible to deliver well linearly polarized, almost TEM 00 mode, and millijoule-level nanosecond pulses at a tunable repetition rate (10-100 kHz). The spectral bandwidth was shown to be less than 0.1 nm. To achieve higher peak power and shorter pulses, two types of ampli?ers have been developed and characterized. The experimental results we obtain, do well agree with the numerical simulations we developped. The ?rst system ampli?es in a rod type ?ber the nanosecond pulses yielded by a microlaser working at 1064 nm wavelength injected . Its provides pulses with a high peak power system (500 kW). Its repetition rate was tuned from 1 kHz to 30 kHz. The second ampli?er was built using a Q-switched ytterbium doped ?ber oscillator injected in a second ?ber which acts as ampli?er. In this original system the two cavities are coupled. It delivers two nanosecond pulses that are coherent, polarized, almost TEM00 single mode beams and that can have independently tunable pulse energies. We have shown that these oscillators and ampli?ers can be easily doubled and tripled in fre- quency. Very high ef?ciency of about 64 % and 38 % have been achieved respectively at 2? and 3?. These outputs have been to have remarquable spatial and temporal characteristics

Abstract:
This PhD thesis explores methods to increase both the power efficiency and the resolution of switched-capacitor Delta-Sigma analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) by employing novel CMOS low-power circuits. A high circuit performance, reliability, low manufacturing costs and a simple design flow to be reused by the scientific community are prioritized. The Delta-Sigma architecture is chosen because of its simplicity and tolerance for its basic block imperfections. The presented circuit research makes use of switched-capacitor techniques to achieve an appropriate matching between the devices and to be dependent only on the external clock jitter. The developed low-current analog circuit techniques target power efficiency, taking advantage of the weak- and moderate-inversion regions of the MOS transistor operation. Novel Class-AB operational amplifiers are also investigated as active elements, trying to use energy only for dynamic transitions, thus reducing power consumption at the circuit level. The circuits unused during a certain period of time are switched off, thus reducing power consumption at the system level and minimizing the number of signal-path switching devices. The circuit reliability is improved by avoiding bootstrapping or other techniques which may increase the operation voltages beyond the nominal supply of the target CMOS technology. Furthermore, the design research also focuses on new circuit topologies with a low sensitivity to both process and temperature deviations in order to increase the yield of the resulting ADCs. A 96.6-dB-SNDR 50-kHz-BW 1.8-V 7.9-mW Delta-Sigma modulator for ADCs is implemented in a standard 0.18-µm CMOS technology based on the proposed novelties. The measurement results indicate the improvement of the state of the art of high-resolution ADCs without clock bootstrapping, calibration or digital compensation, benefiting a wide range of smart sensing applications. Another contribution made in the scope of this research work is the improvement of MOS-only single-stage Class-AB operational amplifiers. The developed switched variable-mirror amplifiers, with their remarkable current efficiency and intrinsic frequency compensation together with high full-scale value and open-loop gain, are suitable for low-power high-precision applications extending beyond the specific area of ADCs, such as digital-to-analog converters (DACs), filters or generators.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an active clamp forward converter for use in the Energy Harvesting From Exercise Machines project. Ideally, this converter will find use as the centerpiece in a process that links elliptical trainers to the California grid. This active clamp forward converter boasts a 14V-60V input voltage range and 150W power rating, which closely match the output voltage and power levels from the elliptical trainer. The isolated topology outputs 51V, higher than previous, non-isolated attempts, which allows the elliptical trainers to interact with a central grid-tied inverter instead of many small ones. The final converter operated at greater than 86% efficiency over most of the elliptical trainer’s input range, and produced very little noise, making it a solid choice for this implementation.

The thesis presents an active-clamp two-switch forward converter. The active-clamp technique clamps the voltage stress of switch, and it also achieves the zero-voltage switching which reduces the switching loss and the spike on switch. Furthermore, it improves the efficiency of the converter. At the secondary of the transformer, the current-doubler rectifier is used instead of the half-wave rectifier to reduce the root mean square current of the secondary-winding. Also, two output filter inductors cancel the current ripple so as to eliminate the voltage ripple on the output capacitor. Finally, according to the operation principle, the steady-state analysis and the component design presented in the thesis, a 400V input, 12V output with 360W prototype is made, and the experimental result of related waveforms is shown to prove the feasibility of the configuration.

In this thesis, a series input parallel output high step-up voltage converter is proposed. This converter combines the forward converter and the flyback converter to achieve high step-up voltage when the switch is turned on. The topology is operated in symmetry. The two active switches are interleavedly controlled, and utilize the same clamp capacitor to achieve leakage energy recycling. The switches of the proposed converter achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) at full load and middle load, on the other hand, they achieve low voltage switching at condition of lower load current. In this research, conventional high step-up voltage converters and related topologies are firstly introduced, followed by characteristic analysis and design of the proposed converter, which is verified by a prototype circuit in the laboratory with 24V input and 200 V/400W output.

A current-doubler rectifier two-switch active-clamp forward converter with one ground-clamp diode is proposed in this thesis. The proposed exhibits the features of wide-input voltage-range application, low output current ripple and high efficiency. A two-switch active-clamp forward converter has a main drawback that its maximum duty ratio is limited to 0.5 to guarantee flux reset for the magnetizing inductor of transformer. The limitation of duty ratio causes the narrow input voltage range. In order to overcome this drawback, the hybrid-bridge switching circuit structure of a two-switch active-clamp forward converter should be destruct. Therefore, two switches and only one ground-clamp diode are utilized to the proposed converter herein. Moreover, a delay turn-off gate signal is used to drive the grounded switch, and thus all the switches of the proposed converter can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) condition under turn-on transition. On the other hand, when the proposed converter with current-doubler rectifier can be operated at duty ratio , it can provide the output current ripple cancellation completely to reduce the size of output filter and increase the power density. The operating principles, component design and power switch selection of the proposed converter are investigated. The IsSpice simulations and experimental results are provided based on an input voltage 400 V, output voltage 48 V and output power 200 W prototype to verify the theoretical analysis of the proposed converter. In addition, according to the experimental results, the maximum power efficiency of the proposed converter is about 84%.

The resulting product 3 was then modified on the phenolic groups with triethylene glycol monomethyl ether tosylate to get molecular clip 5a. 5a was treated with Hg(OAc)2 to convert thione into ketone (6a). Then the resulting molecular clip 6a was reacted with 1,3-dithiole-2-thione in presence of P(OEt)3 to afford 1a. We found such TTF contained molecular clip that forms a macrocycle – molecular clip complex with a electronic complementary macrocycle. Four different sets of external stimuli – the K+/[2,2,2]cryptand, NH4+/Et3N, (p-PhBr)3NSbCl6/Zn pairs and heating/cooling cycles – allow the movement of this molecular switch to be controlled between its threaded and unthreaded states. The macrocycle – molecular clip complex not only considered as a quadruply controllable molecular switch but also can be operated by three of these stimuli as a three-input molecular NOR-functioning logic gate that may be monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Abstract The aim of this thesis is to implement the Toguchi concept of robust design by running a partial factorial set of experiments using orthogonal arrays. The AC to DC switching mode power supplies (two switch forward converter and active clamp forward converter) arm at achieving the separability of electronic elements into control factors and elements’ specification into level, and take exalt the output efficiency as quality goal, consideration in input terminal to supply AC voltage (noise factor) variables, and to determine optimum collocation for factor levels. Analyzes using experimental result to determine optimum collocation for factor levels and analysis of variance (ANOVA) can be used to identify the factors with the highest effect and percentage contributions, it can be allowed the designer to depend on the factor to quality goal iii contribution, to choose the low cost circuit elements specification and reduce the manufacture cost. It also used the least number of experimental to obtain an optimum collocation for factor levels, to reduce the experimental cost and improve the defect of conventional techniques by using try and error method. The optimization efficiency for two switch forward converter as follows: 115Vac, 85.49% and 220Vac, 88.62%, the optimization efficiency for active clamp forward converter as follows: 115Vac, 87.56% and 220Vac, 90.87%. Consequently, it is illustrated application of Toguchi method to robust design and effectively to improve output efficiency and quality performance of power supply.

Abstract:
Magnetic particles can be oriented along the magnetic field direction to achieve orderly arrangement under the magnetic field. Optical functional materials such as photonic crystal and liquid crystal can be obtained according to magnetic induced ordered nanostructure assembly. One-dimensional natural clay minerals with unique structure, composition and properties can be used as structural base to prepare anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles by decorated with magnetic particles, achieving unique optical functional properties. In this chapter, one-dimensional clay minerals@Fe3O4 nanocomposites were prepared by co-precipitation. The resulting one-dimensional clay minerals@Fe3O4 nanocomposites are superparamagnetic. They can be oriented along the direction of the magnetic field and produce an instantaneously reversible response. These magnetic mineral materials can be dispersed in a dilute acid solution to form stable colloid solutions. These stable colloid solutions produce a similar magnetically controlled liquid crystal with Bragg diffraction under an external magnetic field. Their optical properties are affected by magnetic field intensity, magnetic field direction and solid content. The results show that the functionalization of one-dimensional clay minerals has potential applications in display devices, photonic switches and other fields.

Abstract:
I joined the Intelligence Corps in autumn 1941. At that time few people were allowed into the Mansion at Bletchley Park, the nerve centre. I was fortunate enough to work in the Mansion and was one of the four founder members of the Testery, set up in October 1941 to break ‘Double Playfair’ cipher messages. Then in July 1942 the Testery was switched to breaking Tunny traffic. Before reminiscing about the breaking of the Tunny code I should like to recall Alan Turing himself. If it had not been for him everything would have been very different, and I am eternally grateful to him that I did not have to bring up my children under the Nazis. We would have entered a dark age of many years—once the Nazis had got you down, they did not let up. Here is just one example of what life was like under the Nazis. After the war I met a brave Belgian lady called Madame Jeanty. Her family was one of those who kept a safe house for Allied airmen, shot down over Europe and trying to make their way back to Britain to fly again. Helen Jeanty and her husband had a hidey-hole in their house, and had an airman in there one day when the Gestapo came calling, at the usual time of 6 a.m. They searched the house up and down but did not find him, and went away. Everybody was delighted and relieved—claps on the back or whatever the Belgians do. But the Gestapo came back again to find this celebration in progress. Her husband was arrested and taken away and she never saw him again. That sort of thing would have happened time and time again here in Britain if the Nazis had managed to invade. One reason Britain did not fall to the Nazis is that in 1941 Turing broke U-boat Enigma. The decisive effect he had on the Battle of the Atlantic can be seen from the tonnages sunk. The tonnages lost to sinkings dropped by 77% after Turing broke into U-boat Enigma in June 1941, from approximately 282,000 tonnes of shipping lost per month during the early part of 1941, to 64,000 tonnes per month by November. If Turing had not managed that, it is almost certain that Britain would have been starved into defeat.
