Champ Clark and Nye called Hollywood one of “the most deadly and insidious of all propaganda agencies.” Champ Clark provided his vision of what free speech meant in the United States. This right should not be granted to any group who holds a monopoly on a means of communication such as motion pictures. Free speech, Champ Clark contended, only applied to someone speaking to their neighbor, publishing an article, or standing on a soap box in a field. This definition clearly does not include any form of mass communication except the newspaper, which the Committee made sure not to single out. Senator Champ Clark complained that Hollywood films do not deserve the reach they get. It was clear that Champ Clark was jealous that more people followed movies than Washington politicians. Complaints followed that there were not enough politicians featured in films and newsreels. The senator also made a case that Hollywood was a monopoly, diverting from the true goal of the investigation into motion picture propaganda.

Andy Clark is a leading philosopher and cognitive scientist. His work has been wide-ranging and inspiring. The extended mind hypothesis, the power of parallel distributed processing, the role of language in opening up novel paths for thinking, the flexible interface between biological minds and artificial technologies, the significance of representation in explanations of intelligent behaviour, the promise of the predictive processing framework to unify the cognitive sciences: these are just some of the ideas illuminated by Clark’s work that have sparked intense debate across the sciences of mind and brain. This introduction puts into focus some of the major motifs running through Clark’s work and outlines the content and structure of the volume.

Addressing the letter to senator and subcommittee chairman D. Worth Clark, Olson wrote on behalf of the home state of Hollywood that California “looks with disfavor upon the implications of your committee’s investigation, not because this important industry of our state has anything to fear from such investigation, but because the investigation itself is considered an unjustifiable attack upon it.”...

Chapter One explores how the historical novel emerged in the 1760s as a form which at once employed and interrogated the dominant political narrative of ‘ancient liberties’. The notion of ancient constitutionalism allowed proposals for reform or for limits on monarchical power to be seen as attempts to ensure stability or, at most, (as with the theory of the Norman Yoke) to return to political origin. Yet for Horace Walpole ancient constitutionalism seems at times a troubled jest; Clara Reeve senses that the motif desperately needs reinforcement; and even after the more radical uses of the theory of the Norman Yoke by the Constitutional Society in the 1780s and 90s, Ann Radcliffe considers it a frozen political fable. Haunted by the spectre of the divine right of kings, in the historical novel the narrative of tradition ultimately proves an insufficient underpinning for the constitution.

Chapter Five takes up this reading and interrogates the ways in emigration literature becomes a trope in Charles Dickens’s Martin Chuzzlewit (1844) and David Copperfield (1850), Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton (1848) and Catherine Helen Spence’s Clara Morison (1854). This chapter asserts that to ask how central or liminal emigration is to the plot of the novel is to miss the point. What is far more interesting is the ways in which the novels discussed here register the effects of emigration. They draw on the familiar tropes of emigration literature, but at the same time, they imagine a world in which emigration literature connects emigrants and their families and weaves them into the larger global network of the British empire. Thus, collectively, the last two chapters of this book demonstrate the hold that emigration literature had over the cultural imagination. Not only does it produce a stock of common tropes that other genres and media drew on, it also becomes a motif in them, a site of interrogation for the interrogation of texts that produced a widening settler world.

O café é uma bebida muito apreciada por seu aroma e sabor característicos, consequentes da combinação de compostos químicos produzidos pelas reações que ocorrem durante o processo de torrefação. A bebida é influenciada pelo grau de torra, dessa forma é possível definir os diversos compostos extraídos durante o processo de formação. É importante ressaltar que durante o processo de torrefação, além da água, evaporam diversos compostos voláteis presentes no café. Com isso, o objetivo desse estudo foi compreender a variação da perda de umidade e composição volátil como controle de grau de torra de grãos de café. Utilizou-se as principais plataformas de busca como SciELO, Google Scholar, Portal de Periódicos CAPES, Springer e Science Direct para a coleta dos artigos relacionado a variação de umidade e composição volátil durante o perfil de torra do café para fins de controle desta etapa do processo. Foi possível observar que a água é o principal componente do grão a ser liberado na primeira etapa do perfil de torra, 2 a 8 minutos. Essa presença de água e compostos voláteis continuam variando durante as reações de Maillard, degradação de Strecker, quebra de aminoácidos, degradação de trigonelina, ácido quínico, pigmentos, lipídios e interação entre produtos intermediários até a chegada da terceira e última etapa do perfil (12-17 min), a fase pirolítica em elevadas temperaturas (220 – 280 °C). A depender da torra clara, média ou escura varia a umidade e composição volátil, se formando alguns compostos e saindo outros, variando a perda de massa e cor dos grãos de café. Por este motivo é mais preciso se ter um controle do grau de torra não apenas pela cor e perda de massa, mas principalmente pelo perfil de torra, acompanhando o binômio tempo x temperatura e composição volátil. Logo, quanto maior o grau de torra, menor a quantidade relativa de água presente no grão e menor o número de voláteis que levam a diferentes aromas no café. Conforme a temperatura de torra e o tempo aumentam, maior é a perda de umidade, destacando a influência sobre o tipo de torra e o sabor da bebida gerada. Portanto, é necessário se ter um padrão do perfil a fim de controle do grau de torra de grãos de café para melhor qualidade do produto.

O LÚDICO, ANTES RESTRITO À EDUCAÇÃO INFANTIL E AO PRIMEIRO SEGMENTO DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL, TEM SIDO UTILIZADO TAMBÉM NO SEGUNDO SEGMENTO DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL, E NO ENSINO MÉDIO, DEVIDO À POSSIBILIDADE DE CONSTRUÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO POR MEIO DE ATIVIDADES DINÂMICAS ONDE OS DISCENTES INTERAGEM ENTRE SI E COM O PROFESSOR, FACILITANDO A APRENDIZAGEM E SUA COMPREENSÃO DO MUNDO. UMA DAS FORMAS DE O PROFESSOR MANTER O INTERESSE DOS DISCENTES NAS AULAS, É UTILIZAR FERRAMENTAS QUE OS MOTIVEM E, AO MESMO TEMPO, FAVOREÇAM A CONSTRUÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO. NESSE CONTEXTO, OS JOGOS DIDÁTICOS CONFIGURAM-SE COMO ATIVIDADES QUE DESAFIAM, CRIAM POSSIBILIDADES E FOMENTAM O APRENDIZADO. O CERGA ATENDE A ALUNOS DO ENSINO MÉDIO DO CURSO DE FORMAÇÃO DE PROFESSORES E DO ENSINO MÉDIO REGULAR (FORMAÇÃO GERAL). The present work investigates the phenomena of whip and whirl for a rigid rotor contacting at two bearing locations. The idea originated with a paper by Clark et al. in 2009 on an anemometer undergoing dry friction whip and whirl. The anemometer rotor was supported by two Teflon® bushings within an elastically supported housing. The dry-friction forces arose at the bushings.
