Abstract:
The article presents a research of the features of embryonic development of clarid catfish (Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)) conducted at the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the period 2016-2019, as well as at the Department of aquaculture and fisheries of Astrakhan State Technical University. The aim of research is to analyze the duration of embryonic development of the clarid catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell, 1822) in early ontogenesis during artificial reproduction, as well as to study changes in the rate of development of clarid catfish at different temperatures and changes in temperature regime. When analyzing the influence of temperature on the embrional development it was found that duration of the initial stages of development changes slightly and the decrease rates of embryogenesis due to a decrease in temperature corresponds to the late stages of the embryo growth, which can be explained by the adaptation to hatching in the most favorable conditions. A description of embryonic development and growth of catfish embryos and pre-larvae is given. During embryogenesis, morphological features that are easily identified and reflect the process of morphogenesis are identified. It has been found that the duration of embryogenesis of clarid catfish, as well as its individual stages, increases with a decreasing water temperature. As a result of the research, it has been inferred that the duration of embryonic development inside the shells is 18-22 hours. The results of observations on the behavior and morphogenesis of pre-larval clarid catfish kept in an artificially formed system are analyzed

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Reproductive design for gonadal maturation process mostly related with some factors such as environmental signals, reproductive organs, hormonal and nutrition. This research was conducted on female Mutiara strain of North African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus by combining two kinds of materials administered to broodstock diet, namely oocyte developer (Oodev) which contains of PMSG hormone and antidopamin, and astaxanthin carotenoid. Research designs were divided into C (Control), A50 (astaxanthin 50 mg/kg feed), A100 (astaxanthin 100 mg/kg feed), Od0.5 (Oodev 0.5 mL/kg fish for two weeks), Od1 (1 mL/kg fish for 2 weeks), Od0.5A50 (combined Od0.5 with A50), Od1A50 (combined Od1 with A50), Od0.5A100 (combined Od0.5 with A100), and Od1A100 (combined Od1 with A100). This research was performed during twelve weeks of feeding. The Od1A100 treatment showed the best reproduction performance result compared to other treatment with highest hepatosomatic (HSI) and gonadosomatic (HSI) indexes (P<0.05), also fastest increase in egg diameters (P<0.05), shorter rematuration periods and highest proportion of mature broodstock. These results indicated that Oodev and astaxanthin could accelerate gonadal maturity in female broodstock of Mutiara catfish. Keywords: Broodstock, hormonal, reproduction, oocyte developer, astaxanthin ABSTRAK Rekayasa reproduksi untuk proses pematangan gonad sebagian besar terkait dengan beberapa faktor seperti sinyal lingkungan, organ reproduksi, hormonal dan nutrisi. Abstract:
The study was carried out for six (6) weeks at the Department of Fisheries Teaching and Research farm, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, to compare the reproductive performance of Clarias gariepinus using synthetic (ovaprim) and natural (C. gariepinus pituitary extract) hormones . At the end of the feeding trial, the fecundity, percentage fertilization, hatchability, and survival rates of the hatchlings were estimated using standard procedure. The hatchlings were further raised for six weeks and the increase in weight was determined. The results showed that female broodstock injected with C. gariepinus pituitary extract (CgPE) had a higher fecundity (124,000) while the female injected with Ovaprim had 65,000 eggs. The weight of the testes significantly differed (p<0.05) across the treatments, the right lobe weighed 1.63g while the left lobe weighed 1.98g . Subsequently, a higher fertilization rate was recorded in CgPE (91.1%) while Ovaprim had 85.55% . However, Ovaprim had a higher percentage hatchability of 82.93% while CgPE had 82.73% . At the end of the six (6) weeks feeding period, the survival rate was higher in the fish treated with CgPE (82.31%) while the fish injected with Ovaprim had 79.68% . The research exposed the efficacy of using CgPE in the absence of synthetic hormone, CgPE is a preferred substitute that Hatchery managers can utilize for fingerlings production.

Abstract:
The study was conducted to evaluate reciprocal hybridizations in the African catfishes Clarias gariepinus and Clarias jaensis using artificial reproduction under controlled hatchery conditions. The results revealed that the highest fertilization (82.77%) and hatching (67.77%) rates were achieved in the hybrid cross female C. jaensis × male C. gariepinus (Fcj × Mcg). Deformed larvae rates ranged from 9.01 to 16.33%; the hybrid Fcj × Mcg recorded the lowest rate. Survival rates in the larval stage were higher than 80% whatever crossing considered. However, it was higher in the hybrid Fcj × Mcg unlike its homologous female C. gariepinus × male C. jaensis (Fcg × Mcj) which recorded the lowest value (81.70%). In the fry stages D32, survival rates were low than 65%. They were higher and comparable in parental cross Fcg × Mcg (57%) and hybrid cross Fcj × Mcg (61.67%). The lowest survival rate (41.16%) was recorded in parental cross Fcj × Mcj. The hybrid cross Fcj × Mcg expressed the highest growth performances close to those of parental cross Fcg × Mcg, unlike parental cross Fcj × Mcj. Size heterogeneity was greater in hybrids. In all crosses, the condition factor K was low (0.58 to 0.85%), the length-weight relationship was significant with determination coefficient R2 greater than 0.9. The growth was of the negative allometric type (with b less than 3). Positive heterosis has been recorded for both survival and growth at all stages of development. It was concluded that C. jaensis × C. gariepinus hybridizations are indeed possible and would contribute to improve Clarias fry production in captivity. However, the pure strains of Clariidae remain endangered in the natural environment.

Abstract:
Sustainability of the aquaculture industry can be secure through the induce breeding technique. One way that induce breeding can do is to increase the rate of maturation and ovulation in making sure the availability of good quality fish seed all year round. Here, we investigate how Ovaprim hormone impact the reproduction of Clarias gariepinusincluding spawning rate, fecundity, hatching and survival rate. For this purpose, Six broodstocks were divided in three experimental treatments and injected intramuscularly with different doses of Ovaprim hormone of T1: 0.25ml/kg for female and 0.125ml/kg for male, T2: 0.5ml/kg for female and 0.25ml/kg for male and T3: 1.0ml/kg for female and 0.5ml/kg for male. According to our results, broodstock injected with Ovaprim hormone of dose of T3: 1.0ml/kg for female and 0.5ml/kg for male showed higher eggs production and hatching rate compared to other treatment. The results of this study suggest that a dosage of 1.0ml/kg Ovaprim for female and 0.5ml/kg for male have a better effect on the reproductive parameter of Clarias gariepinus.

Kata kunci: lele dumbo Clarias gariepinus, pakan, estradiol_17β, pematangan gonad The success reproduction and time efficiency in producting seed are crucial in the culture of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Abstract:
One hundred and twenty (120) juveniles of African catfish Clarias gariepinus were obtained in May 2015 from a reputable Fish Farm in Enugu to the University Research Farm (latitude 074o North and 082o South, longitude 068o East and 076o West with annual mean temperature of 30oC). The fish were fed for 49 days from June – July 2015 with diets containing 4 different inclusion levels of phosphorus T1 [0.6% P], T2 [0.8% P], T3 [1.00% P], T4 [1.2% P] and T5 [0% P] which served as control diet, to determine optimum P requirement for fish growth at probability level of P < 0.05 between various treatments and control. Each diet was formulated to contain 40% crude protein composed of yellow maize, soybean cake, palm kernel cake and fish meal. Fish fed with graded levels of phosphorus were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than control in FW and MDWG. There was however no significant difference (P > 0.05) in FCR and PER between T1, T2, T4 and control but T3 was significantly (P < 0.05) better in FCR (0.33) than control (0.39). Similarly, T3 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in PER than control. Fish in T3 had the best growth performance indicative that 1% P is the optimum requirement for the growth of C. gariepinus.Res. Abstract:
Feed is a major factor to note for the growth of Dumbo Catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The fermentation process will simplify the particles of feed ingredients, thus increasing their nutritional value. Feed materials that have been fermented will be better quality than raw materials. Fermentation of tofu waste with yeast will convert the protein into amino acids, and indirectly will decrease the crude fiber content of tofu pulp. The method used is Experiment Method. The research was designed using Completely Randomized Design (RAL), which consisted of 3 treatments 3 replications ie the treatment of feeding dregs of fermented tofu with 1% yeast tape, the tofu fermented tofu feed was fermented with 3% tagi yeast, the fermented tofu feed fermented with 5% yeast tape. The result of calculation by using Completely Random Design and Variable Fingerprint Analysis (ANOVA), obtained from F arithmetic <F table (0,05) that is 0,29 <5,14. This shows that it is not significantly different or the same, then it is not followed by the test of the Smallest Real Beda (BNT). H0 accepted, because the results showed that there is no difference in the use of tofu fermented leaf with tape yeast on the growth and survival of Dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The survival of dumbo catfish seeds during the study was 97.78% in all treatments. Water quality during the study was within a reasonable range for the growth and survival of dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Water quality is an important factor in cultivation, although catfish are able to survive under poor water quality conditions but the situation will affect its growth. Abstract:
The article discusses prospects for use of the theory of adaptogens in demand in medicine and in the fish breeding practice. The obtained results show that the adaptogens use at the early stages of catfish ontogenesis (Clarias Gariepinus, Burchell 1822) can cause the condition of nonspecific increased resistance and expand the adaptive flexibility range of this specie. Adaptogen trekrezan used in our experiments (Oxyethylammonium methylphenoxiacetate) is a synthetic analogue of the natural ginseng. Its application in the embryo culture process has shown positive results. It has reduced the level of the developmental anomaly, increased the first stage larvae hatching and their viability, significantly decreased the mortality rate and reduced the level of cannibalism common for catfish larvae. We have determined that the larvae breeding in the trekrezan medium has considerably increased their growth rate, and weight gain. The obtained results are new, and the adaptogens use at the early stages of ontogenesis in industrial catfish aquaculture is recommended. The Russian Foundation for Basic Research has supported our study with the grant No. 18-416-730005.

Abstract This study was designed to evaluate morphological differences between cultured and wild African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell). Fish samples were collected from the lower Benue River (axis in Makurdi), while cultured fish were obtained from the University of Agriculture Makurdi research farm. The results revealed significant sex-related variation in the fish from different environments. Significant differences were observed in all morphometric parameters measured and in three of the five meristic counts recorded. Discriminant analysis and cluster analysis of morphometric parameters showed a high divergence among the populations, hence the tested fish samples were grouped into respective environments by sex. The meristic count, however, overlapped broadly showing no divergence among the populations. The morphometric differences between the cultured and wild African catfish could have been linked to genetic differences or environmental factors or a combination of both factors.

The present research quantified the risk mitigation indices associated with some risk mitigation protocols practiced by humans in Nigeria to mitigate the baseline risk of illness that were associated with Clarias gariepinus contaminated with multidrug-resistant AmpC beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacter cloacae pathogen. Identification of the multidrug-resistant AmpC beta-lactamase-producing E. cloacae pathogen was performed with phenotypic and molecular methods. The United States FDA-iRisk stochastic software quantified the baseline and residual risk of illness associated with the contamination and cross-contamination routes of the C. gariepinus chain. The fresh adult C. gariepinus was contaminated with the multidrug-resistant E. cloacae pathogen (median concentration = 4.49 CFU g-1), but this was significantly reduced by the risk mitigation protocols practiced by the human consumers. The risk mitigation practices of human consumers resulted in a risk mitigation index of 0.92, which was equivalent to a 92% reduction in the baseline risk of illness (baseline risk of illness = 7.58 × 10-4; residual risk of illness = 5.9 × 10-5). In spite of the significant risk mitigation, inducible AmpC beta-lactamase resistance genes was still found in the residual multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae pathogen, which survived the inadequate risk mitigation protocols that accounted for 8% residual risk of illness.

Abstract:
The article discusses the prospects for using probiotics in aquaculture. The effect of probiotics on the physiological processes in the body of African catfish grown under artificial breeding is discussed. The effectiveness of using probiotics to increase productivity, improve the gastrointestinal tract of fish, increase non-specific resistance and stress resistance is analyzed. The results of our own research on the use of the probiotic Subtilis, which is currently used in many industries, including fish farming, are presented. The aim of the work was to study the effect of the probiotic subtilis on the erythron system and on the structure of the leukocyte formula of African catfish. Against the background of the probiotic subtilis, the total number of red blood cells in the bloodstream was increasing, and the proportion of immature forms was progressively decreasing. The seasonal dynamics and sexual characteristics of the catfish peripheral blood system were studied with the use of a probiotic. In general, the stimulating effect of the probiotic subtilis on erythropoiesis and the white blood system was found. Analysis of the leukogram of African catfish indicated the activation of the cellular component of the immune system when using a probiotic in feeding. Our results allow us to recommend the use of the probiotic subtilis for the cultivation of African catfish in industrial aquaculture. Abstract:
Research Institute for Fish Breeding has produced transgenic African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) containing stripped catfish growth hormone gene (PccBA-PhGH) with growth 19.86% faster than that of non-transgenic fish. This fish has high potential to be released and utilized for fish farming sector to increase national production. However, there is not yet information about environmental risk of this fish. One of the major fitness traits determining potential environmental risk is predator avoidance. This study aimed to determine the predator avoidance ability of transgenic African catfish in an experimental laboratory condition. In this study, thirty five individuals each of transgenic and non-transgenic with body weight of about 0.1 ± 0.019 g were communally stocked in 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm aquarium with limited feeding frequency (ad libitum twice a day). One day after the fish were stocked, the predators were added to each aquarium. The non-transgenic and transgenic with body weight of 1.0 ± 0.024 g were stocked as predators as many as five individual in each aquarium. After approximately two weeks of predation, all remaining fish were collected for transgenic verification by PCR method. Genomic DNA was isolated from fin tissue of individually survivors. The results of this study showed that the transgenic fish had worse predator avoidance and lower cannibal than non-transgenic (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in growth performance between transgenic and non-transgenic African catfish (P>0.05) in limited food. The transgenic fish may have lower fitness than non-transgenic.

Abstract:
Background. Antifouling paints are enriched with biocides and employed in the maritime industry to protect moving and fixed surfaces from fouling activities of sea dwelling invertebrates. There is limited information on their effect on the non-target African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, a commonly consumed fish in Lagos. Objectives. This study investigated the effects of two commonly used antifouling paints (Berger TBT-free (A/F783 (H)), reddish brown color and Silka Marine lead based paint, pale orange color) on a non-target catfish species, Clarias gariepinus. Methods. The study involved an initial 96-hour acute toxicity assay followed by chronic toxicity evaluation (using 1/10th and 1/100th 96-hour median lethal concentration (LC50) values) for 28 days to determine the ability of the paints to induce micronucleus and red blood cell abnormalities, and histopathological as well as oxidative stress effects in the catfish.Examined anti-oxidative stress enzyme activities include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST). Results. Acute toxicity evaluation results indicated that the Berger paint was 16.1-times more toxic than Silka paint with 96-hour LC50 values of 0.71 mg/L and 11.49 mg/L, respectively. Results from the biochemical assay indicated significantly higher (P<0.05) levels of a lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde, in Silka-exposed catfish compared to the control. All enzymes showed significantly higher activities in Berger paint-exposed catfish compared to the control. There was evidence of micronucleated and binucleated cells in the red blood cells of fish exposed to both paints. Histopathological assessment indicated that the exposed fish gills showed evidence of abnormalities such as curved lamellae epithelial necrosis, epithelial lifting and hyperplasia. The liver samples of the catfish showed evidence of portal inflammation as well as mild to severe steatosis, while the gonads showed varying percentages of follicle degeneration. Conclusions. The present study combined an array of biomarkers to determine the negative health impacts of two commonly used antifouling paints on non-target catfish inhabiting Lagos Lagoon. Further in situ studies are recommended to determine the current status of the lagoon fish. Ethics Approval. Abstract:
Fermented sausages are the emulsion product and their stability is strongly determined by protein interaction which acts as an emulsifier along with binder compound in order to form cross-link. Thus the products become compact and resistant to the infection of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. The current research was aimed to investigate the microbiological character-istics of sausage as the result of carrageenan addition. This descriptive re-search was repeated three times. The result revealed that pH will gradually decrease following to the length of fermentation. At the end of the fermen-tation, the lowest pH (4.84±0.01) found 2.5 % additional carrageenan. Addi-tion of carrageenan 1.25% up to 5% could inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria 14th day onwards up to 28th day of fermentation, but not for lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Surprisingly, on the last day of fermentation, carragee-nan did not affecting LAB growth. The growth of LAB on the treatment of 0 to 5 % carrageenan was not significantly different with 6.5134±0.08 and 6.6466±0.14 log CFU/ml, respectively. It is clear that the addition of carra-geenan to the concentration of 5% will only inhibit pathogenic bacteria but not for LAB.
