AbstractThis is a response to the paper by Clark Pinnock (JPT 13.1), in which he makes a case for the importance of pneumatology in evangelical theology. The response applauds Pinnock’s effort. It goes on to lift up areas where further development in pneumatology is needed—particularly in relation to liberation theologies and in dialogue with African-American church theologians and Pentecostal theologians.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: In the 1960s, Canadian theologian Clark H. Pinnock declared that saving human knowledge of God could only be built upon the plain sense of the infallible and inerrant text of Holy Scripture. In the ensuing decades, however, Pinnock’s confidence in an inerrant Bible severely waned. A close examination of Pinnock’s early epistemological outlook reveals critical defects that sowed seeds of his later departure from a traditional confession of Scripture’s total trustworthiness. Pinnock’s theological migration reminds scholars and church leaders that only an epistemology that is rooted in the being, knowledge, and revelation of God in Scripture supplies the necessary context for a robust confession of Scripture’s inerrancy and its relationship with the observable world.

Abstract:
AbstractClark Pinnock provides a rich resource to consider various constructive aspects of ecclesiology for Pentecostals. In response to his address, this article attempts to construct a rough sketch of one possible ecclesiology, focusing on the nature of the church from a Trinitarian Pentecostal perspective as a people of God’s presence and power. It investigates the idea of ‘power ecclesiology’ that was raised by Pinnock. It concludes by examining the challenges of appropriate structures in the church and the predominant problem of individualism in North American culture.

Abstract:
AbstractIn another instance of a long and fruitful effort to engage and encourage Pentecostal theologians, appreciatively and constructively, in making their own distinctive contributions to the larger theological world, renowned evangelical theologian Clark Pinnock has here sketched a suggestive proposal for the construction of a distinctly Pentecostal ecclesiology. Originally presented as the keynote address at the 34th annual meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies at Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA on March 11, 2005, this paper appears here as the featured dialogue piece followed by responses from three Pentecostal theologians, Frank D. Macchia, Terry L. Cross, and R. Hollis Gause. Pinnock’s proposal for a Pentecostal theology of the church is here outlined in terms of the following themes: (1) An Anointed Herald of God’s Kingdom, (2) A Trinitarian Society, (3) A Church Oriented to Mission, (4) A Continuing Charismatic Structure, and (5) An Institutional Dimension.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Benarlah apa yang dikatakan oleh Millard J. Erickson, bahwa: “Understanding a theology begins with understanding its conception of its task and how it goes about accomplishing that task—in other words, theological prolegomena and methodology.”

Abstract:
This article explores the recent turn in the theology of religions, visible in diverse quarters, to pneumatology as a way to foster a greater openness to the work of God the Holy Spirit in non-Christian religions. It gives particular attention to the work of Jacques Dupuis (Roman Catholic), George Khodr (Orthodox) and Clark Pinnock (Evangelical Protestant). It argues that recognition of the work of the Holy Spirit allows for an exploration of a variegated activity of God outside the boundaries of the church that cannot be reduced to his presence as Creator or as non-incarnate Word. It, therefore, also allows for dialogue in which commitment to God's supreme revelation in Christ can be combined with an openness to learn from other religious traditions. It does at the same time point to the need to frame the attention for the wider work of the Spirit in the context of the one plan of salvation of the triune God such as not to separate the “two hands of God.” It argues that the work of the Spirit outside the boundaries of the church remains directed to the eschatological salvation inaugurated by Christ and, therefore, also to the church as the “first fruits” of the eschaton and as the community where this salvation is proclaimed and embraced.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractIn the first decade of the twenty-first century, the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) in the United States (US) went through a shift because of the introduction of open theism into theological context of conservative evangelicalism. The response by the society to this new theology was swift and decisive. Not only were the memberships of certain evangelicals (i.e. Clark H. Pinnock and John Sanders), who were responsible for bringing open theism into the ETS, in danger of being revoked, but the ETS formally denounced open theism and changed its constitutional by-laws to safeguard itself against anyone bringing significant theological innovation into the society. It is important to re-examine the cultural ethos of the ETS in the US in terms of the underlying beliefs of the society in order to determine whether or not the changes the ETS made had basis in scripture or were simply motivated by the culture at large. To determine this, this article will begin by generally describing some of the main cultural beliefs of the ETS. Next, the discussion focuses on some of the major historical influences of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which impacted the ETS to conform to an ethos more in line with the Enlightenment. Third, the article will critique these Enlightenment-based cultural beliefs linguistically, culturally and theologically. This article will demonstrate that because the ETS conformed more to the standards of the Enlightenment than to scripture, it is generally much more preoccupied with knowing the truth of scripture rather than walking in the way of Jesus Christ. Finally, this article suggests the way forward for the ETS is to become a more inclusive society by aligning itself with a more historical definition of evangelicalism rather than simply being defined by the evangelicalism of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This article suggests that by making this move, the ETS will reclaim a much more grace-filled attitude towards its current members and give hope to those committed Christ-followers on the outside of the society, showing them they are welcome to be a part of such a prestigious theological group.

Abstract:
In light of the current ecological crisis, Pentecostal theologians have recently begun investigating the relationship between Pentecostal theology and ecology. In the last few years, some emerging voices have made some significant contributions to this new and developing subject. Yet, little attention has been devoted to conversing with outside dialogue partners. In response to this lack, this paper explores how Clark Pinnock’s cosmic pneumatology might interact with Pentecostal ecotheology. In sum, it proposes that applying Pinnock’s cosmic pneumatology to Pentecostal ecotheology broadens the Spirit’s empowering work to non-human spheres, thus giving Pentecostals a theological foundation for creation care and other relevant ecological practices.
