Abstract:
Abstract Waveform modeling and first motion analysis are used to determine the source parameters of six 5.8 ≦ M ≦ 6.8 earthquakes that occurred between 1925 and 1964 within the northern Intermountain Seismic Belt of Montana. Results of this study suggest that the 1925 Clarkston earthquake occurred along an oblique normal fault with a trend similar to the southern end of the Clarkston Valley fault. The two largest earthquakes of the 1935 Helena sequence occurred along right-lateral strike-slip faults with trends similar to the Bald Butte and Helena Valley faults. The 1947 Virginia City earthquake occurred along a northwest-southeast trending segment of the Madison fault. Movement at depth was along a fault with strike similar to that of the 1959 Hebgen Lake main shock. A reanalysis of a M = 6.0 aftershock of the 1959 Hebgen Lake sequence suggests the earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 km along a fault that is not seen at the surface. An M = 5.8 earthquake in 1964, located about 10 km from the 1959 aftershock, may have occurred along steeply dipping fault planes (48° to 80°) at depths of 8 to 14 km. Most events could be modeled as simple ruptures.

Abstract:
During the coronavirus pandemic, it was imperative that real-time, rapidly changing guidance on continuously evolving critical health information about COVID-19 be communicated. This case study highlights how understandable and actionable COVID-19 health information was systematically developed and disseminated to support highly vulnerable refugee, immigrant, and migrant (RIM) communities in Clarkston, Georgia. Our approach was grounded in community-based participatory research (CBPR) incorporating Cultural and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards, plain language and health literacy guidelines, and health communication science to improve the understandability and usability of COVID-19 micro-targeted messaging for RIM communities. We followed a centralized systematic approach to materials development and incorporated local needs and existing networks to ensure cultural and linguistic responsiveness as well as understandability for populations with limited literacy skills. Further, iterative development of materials with community members and agencies provided buy-in prior to dissemination. As part of a multi-pronged community-wide effort, effective materials and messaging provided support to community health workers and organizations working to improve vaccination rates among the RIM community. As a result, we saw vaccine rates in Clarkston outpace other similar areas of the county and state due to this community-wide effort.

Refugee and immigrant populations are extremely vulnerable to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 vaccination is a critical tool in mitigating these consequences, but these same communities often lack access to COVID-19 vaccines. We describe the efforts of a community-based primary care clinic in Clarkston, Georgia to provide access to COVID-19 vaccines in a culturally sensitive manner to address this health disparity and vaccine hesitancy.

Abstract:
Accurate identification of many red algae to the species level using only morphological characters can be difficult. The emerging field of “molecular-assisted alpha taxonomy” can greatly alleviate this issue. In this approach, a large number of specimens are sequenced for a standard DNA marker as a first step to genetic species assignment, followed by detailed morphological observations. Regions of both the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI-5P) and the plastid 23S rRNA gene (UPA) have been proposed as DNA barcode markers to accomplish this task. We compared the utility of each marker as a species identification tool using members of the marine red algal family Kallymeniaceae from British Columbia, Canada. Our results indicate that COI-5P is a more sensitive marker for delimiting species, but that it can be difficult to acquire clean amplification products for many isolates of Kallymeniaceae, owing to biological contamination. This problem can be overcome by using specific primers. UPA, on the other hand, has universal primers that work in diverse lineages (e.g., red, brown, and green algae), but lower interspecific sequence variation, which has the potential to underestimate species diversity, although this was not observed in our study. During our survey, we uncovered a new species of the Kallymeniaceae, Euthora timburtonii Clarkston et G.W. Saunders sp. nov., which we describe here.

Abstract:
The central part of Clarkston Mountain is located in northcentral Utah in the southern part of the Malad Range. It is northwest of Clarkston, Utah. The mapped area measures 2.5 mi. in the north-south direction and 6.5 mi. in the east-west direction. It is within the Basin and Range Province. The Ute Formation of Middle Cambrian age is the oldest exposed stratigraphic unit. Other Cambrian units, in ascending order, are: Blacksmith Formation, Bloomington Formation, Nounan Formation, and St. Charles Formation. These units consist predominantly of limestone, dolostone, and shale. Units of Ordovician age include the Garden City Formation and the Swan Peak Formation. They consist of limestone and orthoquartzite, respectively. The youngest Paleozoic unit is the Fish Haven-Laketown Formation of Ordovician-Silurian age. It is dolostone. Units of Quaternary age include colluvial deposits, Lake Bonneville Group, and alluvial deposits. West-dipping, low-angle normal faults generally trend north and northwest. They were originally thrust faults formed during regional compression. A bedding-plane thrust fault separates the Bloomington and Nounan Formations. Later reversed movement on the west-dipping, low-angle thrust faults changed the stratigraphic relationships across these faults to those characteristic of normal faults. High-angle normal faults trend northwest, north, and northeast. Major normal faults extend along the western and eastern sides of Clarkston Mountain and are responsible for the present topographic relief. The structural features of the mapped area are the result of two major tectonic events. The Sevier orogeny produced eastward directed thrust faults. It began in Late Jurassic and ended in early Eocene. Basin and Range normal faulting caused reversed movement on west-dipping thrust faults, formed by the Sevier orogeny, and also produced many high-angle normal faults. It began in early Eocene and has continued into historic time in the region.

Abstract:
In this thesis Clarkson's inequalities and their generalizations are the main tools. The technique that can be used to prove Clarkson type inequalities in more dimensions is shown. We also establish Clarkson type inequalities in general Banach spaces and point out the connections between Clarkson's inequalities and the concept of type and cotype. The classical results on the von Neumann-Jordan constant, closely related to Clarkson's inequalities, are shortly presented. The concepts of moduli of convexity and smoothness, which are connected with the geometry of Banach spaces, are discussed. Some equivalent ways of describing modulus of convexity and some properties of this function are formulated. The estimation of the modulus of convexity for L(p)-spaces is presented as well. Finally, several examples of moduli of convexity and smoothness for different spaces are described.

Abstract:
An ethnographic case study was done in the rural community of Clarkson which lies at the foot of the Tsitsikamma Mountains in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Rural communities gathered and developed local wisdom on the natural resources around them. The study shows that in the past, life in Clarkson was characterised by such shared wisdom, an abundance of natural resources, as well as strong community cohesion. With the advent of modern lifestyles community cohesion and practices were disrupted and today, people living in Clarkson are less dependent on each other and on local resources. This study suggests that some of the past wisdom, community knowledge, practices and skills that existed for ages in Clarkson, can still be useful today in the context of environmental sustainability. The incorporation of this knowledge into the new outcomes-based education curriculum in South Africa and the local school curriculum, is explored.

Na radioterapia, o planejamento é parte fundamental do tratamento de um paciente. Para que o planejamento seja bem sucedido, o físico deve utilizar parâmetros físicos baseados na interação da radiação com a matéria para determinar a dose no volume alvo. Esses parâmetros são obtidos a partir de campos com dimensões bem definidas (geralmente quadrados), porém, na radioterapia é comum aparecer campos irregulares. Para resolver este problema, utilizam-se métodos que convertem esses campos irregulares em equivalentes de campos quadrados. Quando se tem campos pequenos, a aproximação de Sterling (algoritmo que permite a obtenção do campo quadrado equivalente a partir da razão entre quatro vezes a área efetiva de irradiação pelo perímetro que a envolve) é bem sucedida, porém quando o campo é muito grande e irregular, esta relação mais tão eficiente. Para tal caso, tem-se um método conhecido por Método de Clarkson. O método de Clarkson é um algoritmo que utiliza valores obtidos a partir de funções que relacionam a interação da radiação com a matéria, tais como, Razão Espalhamento Ar (SAR) e Razão Tecido Ar (TAR), para determinar especialmente campos quadrados equivalentes de campos irregulares e de grandes dimensões ou para calcular a dose de radiação em um ponto do paciente. A utilização deste método é muito trabalhosa, pois exige muitas horas de trabalho manual de um profissional especializado. Este trabalho desenvolveu um programa que analisa uma magem digital de um campo irregular, como os campos encontrados frequentemente no tratamento de linfomas do tipo Hodgking (manto), e determina um campo regular equivalente a este. As incertezas entre o método de Clarkson manual e o programado foram de ( -0,52 ± 0,60 )% e validam o programa desenvolvido.
Radiotherapy has a fundamental part that is the patient treatment planning. For its success, the medical physicist has to use physical parameters based on the radiation interaction with the matter, in this case the patient; in order to determine the radiation absorbed dose in the selected target volume. The physical parameters normally are related to regular radiation field sizes, although irregular fields can be also used in some treatments. To overcome this problem there are methods that convert irregular fields in regular fields, such as a square one. For small fields the Sterling\'s Method (technique to calculate equivalent square fields making use of ratio four times the effective area of irradiation by is perimeter) can be used. However, this method is not adequate for large irregular field. In this case, the Clarkson\'s Method is used. The Clarkson\'s Method uses values functions, such as Scattering-Air Ratio (SAR) and Tissue-Air Ratio (TAR), related with radiation interaction of with matter, to determine equivalent square fields from those large irregular ones or to calculate the radiation absorbed dose in the point of interest in a patient The application this method takes time, once it needs a considerable time from the medical physicist attention and also from the equipment. In this work, a software was developed to analyse digital images of large irregular fields, such as fields found in treatment of Hodgkin\'s disease (mantle) correlating them to regular equivalent fields. The uncertainty between the manual Clarkson and the programmed was inferred as ( -0,52 ± 0,60 )%, what can validate the program developed.

In this thesis we examine the case of the Clarkson Mission and Tsitsikamma Mfengu communities on the Southern Cape Coast of South Africa, and highlight some of the ambiguities prevalent in their contested claims of entitlement to the Clarkson mission land. Their respective notions of communal identity are investigated, and the ways in which these are historically linked to land entitlement are examined. The analyses of the constructed communal identities of the "coloured" Clarksoner and the "native" Mfengu are located within the critical analytical approach of discourse theory, an important component of which is a socio-historical analysis. Primary data were obtained through archival, documentary, comprehensive Deeds Registry research, as well as fieldwork and in-depth interviews. Central themes in this study are colonial land dispossessions, the use of forced indigenous labour, resistance, rebellion and collaboration. The study shows that aspects of "coloured", "native", "tribal", "ancestral", Mfengu, and Moravian, used in contemporary communal identity formations are not fixed givens, but rather historical discursive constructions that are in a process of constant change. In the case of the Clarksoners we show how the Moravian historical narrative together with the Moravian Ethic had been transplanted and imposed by the early Moravian missionaries at the Cape and how these have over time come to be taken-for-granted and appropriated by members of Moravian Church, and Clarksoners in particular. We trace the origin of the Moravian narrative and show the similarities, differences, and continuity at both Genadendal in the Southern Cape and Clarkson. In the case of the Tsitsikamma Mfengu we show how the emerging colonial "Fingo" narrative and constructed colonial "Fingo" identity are firmly connected to land dispossession and forced labour in the aftermath of the 1835 Eastern Cape frontier war. We show how elements of both the "Fingo" narrative and constructed identity were appropriated and re-ordered in contemporary processes of Tsitsikamma Mfengu community identification. The study endeavours to make visible the dynamic changing history and relations of power and domination surrounding processes of communal identification that are connected to historical rights in land.

Abstract:
La dosimétrie in vivo en transmission réalisée avec les imageurs portals apparait être une alternative intéressante pour la réalisation de la dosimétrie in vivo en Radiothérapie externe. Une nouvelle méthode basée sur des fonctions de Rapport Tissue Maximum finit (RTMf) et sur une séparation Primaire / Diffusée est proposée. La dose dans le patient peut alors être estimée à partir du signal transmis mesuré pendant le traitement. 46 configurations test réalisées à l'aide de fantômes d'eau solide ont été proposées pour réaliser l'évaluation globale de la méthode. En outre, une étude clinique de validation a été conduite pour 494 patients. Les images portals ont été acquises à l'aide d'imageur portals au silicium amorphe montés sur des accélérateur Clinacs Varian(tm). La dose dans le patient est calculée par rétroprojection de la dose portal à l'aide du logiciel EPIgray(tm) (logiciel développé en collaboration avec la société DOSIsoft(tm)) et est comparée à celle planifiée à l'aide logiciel Eclipse Varian(tm) (algorithme Pencil Beam). Les écarts entre les doses planifiées et les dose mesurées sont reportés pour chaque point d'intérêt. Les résultats sont dans les niveaux de tolérances habituels de la dosimétrie in vivo (moyenne=0. 7% 1s= 2. 7% pour les mesures sur fantômes; moyenne =-0. 6% 1s= 2. 8% pour les mesures in vivo sur patients). Pour conclure, la dosimétrie in vivo en transmission est facile à utiliser en conditions de routine clinique (pas de temps additionnels lors du traitement). En utilisant la méthode proposée, la dose peut être calculée en tous points dans le patient. La précision des résultats est plus qu'acceptable pour le cadre de la dosimétrie in vivo
Transit dosimetry performed with Electronic Portal Imaging Devices (EPIDs) appears as an interesting alternative for in vivo dose verification for patients receiving external Radiotherapy. A new method based on a transit Tissue Maximum Ratio (TMRt) and Primary/Scatter separation is proposed. The dose inside the patient could be estimated from the transmitted signal measured during irradiation. 46 test cases were defined, using solid water phantoms, for the overall method assessment. Moreover, a clinical study was driven for 494 patients. Portal Images are acquired using a-Si EPID mounted on 4 Varian Clinacs(tm). The dose in the patient is estimated from the back projection of the portal dose with EPIgray(tm) (software developed in a partnership with DOSIsoft(tm)) and compared with calculated data (Varian Eclipse(tm) software using pencil beam algorithm). Deviations between stated and measured doses are reported for each point of interest. The results are within the accepted tolerance of classical in vivo dosimetry (mean=0. 7% 1SD= 2. 7% for in-phantom dose verifications; mean =-0. 6% 1SD= 2. 8% for in vivo dose verifications). To conclude, transit dosimetry is easy to use systematically in clinical routine (no additional time for data acquisition). Using this method, the in vivo dose can be computed at any point. The accuracy of this method was more than acceptable for in vivo purpose

Abstract:
Small (nano-/micro-scale) particle transport, deposition and removal are of critical importance in many industries including semiconductor manufacturing, imaging, pharmaceutical and food processing. In addition, numerous environmental processes involve particle transport, deposition and removal. In the last decade, significant research progress in the areas of nano- and micro-particle transport, deposition and removal has been made. In this project, a series of courses was developed to make these class of new important research findings available to seniors and graduate students in engineering through developing and offering of specialized curricula at Clarkson University. The project involved integration of particle transport, deposition and removal numerical simulations and experiments in the developed courses. The course materials are mostly made available on the web and some courses have been taught at Clarkson University and Syracuse University campuses simultaneously. Based on the course materials, a series of short courses was also offered at several countries. The first two courses on particle transport, deposition and removal are composed of four modules: (i) fundamental of particle transport, dispersion, deposition and removal, (ii) computational modeling of particle transport, deposition and removal, (iii) experimental study of particle transport, deposition and removal, and (iv) industrial applications of particle transport, deposition and removal. Based on this course development experience, more recently, a new undergraduate course (Nano/Micro-scale Systems Engineering) was developed. The course development and implementation was supported a grant from NSF under the Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education program following an initial grant from Clarkson University. The chief instructional objective of the new course is to familiarize the students to the design, analysis, simulation and implementation/fabrication of nano/micro-scale engineering systems. This nanotechnology course consists of three main components to address a set of its well-defined educational objectives: (i) lectures developed and delivered by a multidisciplinary team at Clarkson University, (ii) instructions on computational design/analysis and simulation tools, and (iii) a hands-on workshop for gaining experience with cleanroom procedures and fabrication facilities. The second component has been developed with help of a software company. The third component is being realized through collaboration with the NNIN supported CNF facility at Cornell University as a hands-on workshop for the Clarkson students. An outline of this ongoing course development activity has been given and main features of the course has been discussed.

For example, in the course studied at Clarkson University, the average enrollment was 32 students per year (over four years), including an average of 5% graduate students. Abstract:
Gravitational lensing refers to the deflection of light by the gravity of celestial bodies, often predominantly composed of dark matter. Seen through a gravitational lens, the images of distant galaxies appear distorted. A range of mathematical frameworks exist to model the lensing effect, but reconstructing the dark lens mass remains a difficult problem, where different models give different insight. This paper considers the Roulette formalism due to Chris Clarkson, and develops a simulator visualising the lensing effect according to the formalism. The objective is to enhance our understanding of the formalism in order to understand its strengths and limitation with respect to lens-mass modelling.

Abstract:
Armless people face more difficulties in daily self-care activities such as cooking. Most of the existing kitchen products are based on the needs of normal people and rarely consider the characteristics of the disadvantaged group of armless people. Armless people can only use the product through the feet, chin and residual limb, which has high requirements for motor capability. Therefore, it is difficult to guarantee the efficiency, safety and operating comfort of the products, which has also become an obstacle to independent living of people without arms. The goal of this research is to design kitchen products suitable for people without arms. The research uses the definition and evaluation method of user capability in the capability-demand theory proposed by Clarkson et al. to disassemble the motor capability in user capability into strength, dexterity, reach and mobility. Through survey questionnaires, we can understand the scores of armless people on specific motor capabilities and use their higher-scoring motor capabilities to match the demands of product use in design practice, so as to improve the operability of the product. Based on the design strategy of P. John Clarkson and others for products using hands, the author summarizes the design strategy of products that use lower limbs and foot operations from the 6 dimensions of position, shape, force, precision, task and environment. It is proposed for guiding how to design products for armless people, the author also designs kitchen products based on this, hoping to help armless people cook like normal people. The analysis of the motor capability of armless people in this study can provide a reference for product design for this disadvantaged group. As a group with low levels of attention in the market, design, and society, the research on armless people has expanded the connotation and scope of inclusive design to a certain extent.

When local governments evaluate the environmental benefits and costs of alternatives for managing non-recyclable municipal solid waste, the relative costs of modern waste-to-energy (WTE) technology can be a significant stumbling block despite WTE technology’s environmental benefits. Although the preceding point is an important economic reality that has constrained WTE development in the United States, fortunately there is a highly effective means — the use of municipal solid waste “flow control” (or “facility designation”) authority — to overcome WTE’s perceived cost disadvantage. The relationship between flow control and WTE development, including significant encouragement for use of flow control as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in United Haulers Association v. Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority, 127 S.Ct. 1786 (2007), is the focus of this paper, which will address the following topics: Policy Basis for Flow Control — Absent government intervention, management of municipal solid waste will seek the lowest cost (i.e., short-term cost) and frequently less environmentally protective alternatives. Flow control can counter the tendency to choose alternatives with lower short-term costs and at the same time facilitate implementation of the environmentally-preferable waste management alternatives a local government selects, such as WTE technology and other aspects of “integrated waste management.” Flow Control and the Courts — While the authority of a given local government to use flow control is grounded in state law, flow control also implicates matters that arise under federal law, such as Commerce Clause issues, given the possibility that solid waste regulation in one state can affect commercial interests in solid waste management in another state. Although concerns regarding claims of impact on interstate commerce prompted a negative Supreme Court response to flow control in C&A Carbone, Inc. v. Town of Clarkstown, 511 U.S. 383 (1994), the Court’s decision 13 years later in the Oneida-Herkimer case was in many ways just the opposite. WTE’s Correlation with Flow Control and Practical Guideposts — WTE development can be significantly advanced by the use of flow control. That conclusion is borne out by empirical data. The concluding portion of this paper addresses that topic as well as corollary issues, such as public-private collaboration for WTE development and other practical guideposts for implementing flow control ordinances.

Abstract:
ITP is an autoantibody-mediated disease which would logically be treated by decreasing the level of autoantibody. However, the most exciting developments in understanding the pathophysiology of the thrombocytopenia and its treatment involve a better understanding of the MPS FcR system and ways in which it can be modulated. This work has focussed on phagocytic paralysis or FcR blockade (FcRBl): the slowing of destruction of antibody-coated platelets despite the persistent presence of antibody on the surface of the platelet.Several areas have been explored in learning about the MPS system. Investigation by Kurlander among others have revealed that at least 2 FcR's exist on mononuclear phagocytes: one with high and one with low affinity for monomeric IgG. Study of the high affinity FcR expressed by circulating monocytes, by Schreiber among others, has explored the effect of Danazol to decrease the expression of this FcR. The clinical relevance of this receptor is uncertain however because it is saturated in vitro by physiologic concentrations of IgG. Unkeless defined the properties of the low affinity "immune complex" FcR, expressed on macrophages and neutrophils, via monoclonal antibody 3G8 (see below) which blocks ligand binding to this FcR. The exact roles of these two, and possibly more, FcR's are being explored. Another still unsolved controversy involves whether the interaction Fc portions of antibodies coating particles with FcR's is mediated by a conformational change of the Fc portion or by a multipoint attachment of several Fc parts.Studies by Mollison in the 60's demonstrated that the MPS had a limited capacity for removal of antibody-coated (red) cells. Shulman pursued MPS modulation by exploring the inhibition of thrombocytopenia caused by infusion of ITP plasma into normals. Kelton demonstrated that "compensated" ITP may be caused by a decreased clearance of antibody-coated cells and that the rate of clearance of antibody-coated cells may be correlated with rate of clearance of antibody-coated cells may be correlated with the intrinsic levels of IgG. Stossel investigated FcRBl as a mechanism of effect of corticosteroids and related it clinically. Subsequently intravenous gammaglobulin (IVGG) was introducedas a treatment of ITP and Fehr et al first demonstrated FcRBl as the mechanism of effect of IVGG. Exploration of the mechanism of the FcRBl caused by IVGGled Salama and Mueller-Eckhardt to demonstrate the therapeutic effect of I anti-D, which apparentlycoats RBC with antibody and causes their destruction atthe coats RBC with antibody and causes their destruction at the expense of antibody-coated platelets. A similar degree of FcRBl has been shown for aldometrelated to the development of antibody on RBC.Our studies, including Drs. Clarkson, Kimberly, Nachman, and Unkeless, have focussed on the role of the low affinity or "Immune complex" FcR by using monoclonal antibody 3G8 in vivo. An infusion of 1 mg/kg of 3G8 in chimpanzees caused a reproducible FcRBl demonstrable by a slowing of the destruction of antibody-coated RBC for > 10 days (JEM, 1986). Less effect of 3G8 to inhibit CIC removal was seen using DNA-anti-DNA as the immune complex. In view of the wel1-documented effects of IVGG infusion to create FcRBl, we infused 3G8 into 6 adults with refractory ITP (NEJM, 1986). Specifically these patients were refractory to all forms of conventional therapy including splenectomy, steroids, vinca alkaloid infusion, immunosuppressives and danazol . 3 of the 6 patients had peak platelet responses to >80,000/ul. The other 3 had short-lived platelet increases from 10 to 30,000/ul. These responses confirmed the effect of FcRBl, specifically of the low affinity FcR, to underlie a dramatic platelet increase in therapy of ITP. Surprisingly 3 of the patients had apparent longterm effects of this therapy demonstrable in 2 cases as a maintenance of the platelet count >20,0C0/ul without any further therapy and in 1 case as a clearly enhanced responsiveness to other therapies following 3G8 infusion. Since Natural Killer activity was (transiently) ablated by 3G8 infusion, we speculate that an alternation of regulation of (auto) antibody production by NK cells may be responsible for this effect and that FcR interactions include regulatory roles in addition to their primary function of removal of CIC.
