AbstractWe diagnose a new species of Brontotheriidae from a middle Eocene locality, the Clarno Nut Beds, from the Clarno Formation, John Day Basin, Central Oregon. Though renowned for its richness in fossil flora, fossil vertebrates are rare in the Clarno Nut Beds and this new species is the most abundantly represented mammal. Radiometric dating constrains the age of the Nut Beds fauna to about 43.76 Ma within the Uintan North American Land Mammal Age. This new taxon, represented by numerous cranial, mandibular, and dental specimens, is comparatively small for a brontothere and notable for its

Abstract:
A new kind of fin-winged fruit is recognized from lacustrine shales of the early Eocene Tepee Trail Formation of northwestern Wyoming and from the middle Eocene Clarno Formation of central Oregon, USA. The fruits are obovate with five thick lateral wings, borne on a thick pedicel and bearing scars of hypogynous perianth and disk. The fruit surface is covered with small circular dots interpreted as glands. This combination of characters leads us to infer affinities with the Rutaceae, although no identical modern genus is known. We establish the new genus and species, Quinquala obovata.

A large unexplored tectonic basin with the potential for significant hydrocarbon accumulations was identified in north‐central Oregon using a variety of geophysical techniques. The basin, informally named after the local town of Heppner, is covered by several thousand feet of Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) but is readily identified by a gravity low against the Blue Mountains Uplift. The Paleocene/Eocene Herren Formation (Pigg, 1961), which outcrops on the Blue Mountains Uplift south of the Heppner Basin, offered good source and reservoir potential. The Clarno Formation is a series of volcanic, volcaniclastic, and related intrusive rocks located in central Oregon. It is the westernmost extent of a broader Eocene magmatic belt that covers much the western United States. The magmatic belt stretches eastward from Oregon to western South Dakota, and from the Canadian Yukon to northern Nevada. While once attributed to subduction of the Farallon Plate under North America, more recent work suggests that a more complex tectonic regime involving extension was in place during the early Cenozoic. Abstract:
A study of the emergence of the Rajputs has been done in order to outline the political and social structure of medieval Rajasthan. Apart from kinship ties, the inter-clan relationships have been studied as well as the process State formation which developed through distinct stages. Study of these developments aids in understanding the marriage network among the clans. Whereas during the early period of State formation, caste boundaries were quite blurred, by the 15th–16th centuries, caste distinctions acquired importance both for marriage purposes and systematisation of administration. It is apparent from the study of the caste structure of this region that it cannot be seen in terms of the fourfold varnas. For the Rajputs, it was the clan structure that was more significant and this governed the marriage rules.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the correlation between bottom-up local reconciliation and state-building in Somalia. It identifies key conflict actors in three regional states, and postulates general trends in local conflicts and how to address them. Rather than promoting grassroots reconciliation between various sets of clans engaged in localized conflicts throughout south-central Somalia, the process of forming Federal Member States has intensified and, in some cases, revived conflicts over regional boundaries, land use, and political representation. The urgency to meet the New Deal benchmarks has led to what independent observers consider to be contentious and hasty state-formation. The 2013–17 period was marred by a surge in clan-based violence as discontent grew among those clans that felt they received an unfair deal.

Abstract:
A reductive radical cyclization of tetrahydropyran 1 to form bicycle 2 using iron(II) chloride in the presence of NaBH4 was reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 6942) by Louis Fensterbank and Cyril Ollivier at the University of Paris and Anny Jutand at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. The enantioselective conversion of tetrahydrofuran 3 to spirocycle 5 via iminium ion-catalyzed hydride transfer/cyclization was developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 8811) by Yong-Qiang Tu at Lanzhou University. Daniel Romo at Texas A&M University showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 13348) that enantioenriched tricyclic β-lactone 8 could be readily prepared via dyotropic rearrangement of the diketoacid 6 under catalysis by chiral Lewis base 7. A dyotropic rearrangement was also utilized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 6984) by Zhen Yang at Peking University, Tuoping Luo at H3 Biomedicine in Cambridge, MA, and Yefeng Tang at Tsinghua University for the conversion of 9 to the bicyclic lactone 10. In terms of the enantioselective synthesis of β-lactones, Karl Scheidt at Northwestern University found that NHC catalyst 12 effects (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 7309) the dynamic kinetic resolution of aldehyde 11 to furnish the lactone 13 with very high ee. Meanwhile, Xiaomeng Feng at Sichuan University has developed (J. Am Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 17023) a rare example of an enantioselective Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 4-alkyl cyclohexanones such as 14. The diastereoselective preparation of tetrahydropyran 18 by Lewis acid-promoted cyclization of cyclopropane 17 was accomplished (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 6258) by Jin Kun Cha at Wayne State University. Stephen J. Connon at the University of Dublin reported (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 6502) the formal cycloaddition of aryl succinic anhydrides such as 18 with aldehydes to produce γ-butyrolactones, including 20, in high ee. The stereodivergent cyclization of 21 via desilylation-induced heteroconjugate addition to produce the complex tetrahydropyran 22 was discovered (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 5550) by Paul A. Clarke at the University of York. Remarkably, while TFA produced a 13:1 diastereomeric ratio in favor of the cis diastereomer 22, the use of TBAF resulted in complete reversal of diastereoselectivity.

Abstract:
Andrew G. Myers at Harvard reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 4568) the alkylation of the pseudophenamine amide 1 selectively setting the quaternary stereogenic center of 2. This is an effective replacement for his previously reported pseudoephedrine, now a controlled substance. Amine catalysis has enabled numerous methods for the asymmetric α-functionalization of aldehydes, although α-alkylation remains a significant challenge. David W.C. MacMillan at Princeton developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 9090) an α-vinylation of aldehydes 3 with vinyliodoniums 5, which relied on the “synergistic combination” of the amine catalyst 4 and copper(I) bromide. The stability of the β,γ-unsaturated aldehyde products under the reaction conditions is notable. A procedure for the asymmetric β-vinylation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes such as 7 was developed (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2012, 2774) by Claudio Palomo at the Universidad del Pais Vasco in Spain. Amine 8 catalyzed the enantioselective Michael addition of β-nitroethyl sulfone 9 to 7 followed by acetalization and elimination of HNO2 and SO2Ph furnished products such as 10 in high enantiomeric excess. In a conceptually related reaction, a surrogate for acetate as a nucleophile was reported (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 148) by Wei Wang at the University of New Mexico and Jian Li of the East China University of Science and Technology. In this case, amine 13-catalyzed Michael addition of pyridyl sulfone 11 to unsaturated aldehyde 12, followed by acetalization and reductive removal of the sulfone, gave rise to the ester product 14 with very high ee. Asymmetric hydroformylation offers a powerful approach for the synthesis of carbon stereocenters, but controlling the regioselectivity of the reaction remains a challenge with many substrate classes. Christopher J. Cobley of Chirotech Technology Ltd. (UK) and Matthew L. Clarke at the University of St. Andrews showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 2477) that the mixed phosphine-phosphite ligand “bobphos” 16 (bobphos = best of both phosphorus ligands) provided significant selectivities for the branched hydroformylation products, up to 10:1 b:l in the case of 15. Another major challenge for hydroformylation is to control the regioselectivity of internal olefin substrates.

Abstract:
Collective identity is an abstract category which encompasses narrowly definable concepts such as group identity, cultural identity, or regional identity, and historically specific types of community formation and sociation such as clans, tribes, peoples, nations, or ethnic minorities, including socio-structural concepts such as social status and class as well as political parties and movements. A definition of the term collective identities includes every process of community formation and sociation that leads to clearly definable social entities, although communicative processes of self- and other-identification and corresponding attitudes appear to be of constitutive importance. The transformation of collective identities is considered in view of the ‘three waves of democratization’, and the socio-structural processes of ‘political exclusion’, ‘socio-cultural closures’, and ‘meritocratic-functional differentiation’. Currently massive migration processes are also connected with questions and symptoms of a crisis of collective identities. At the same time, issues of multiple identities gain more importance.

Abstract:
Biomarker analyses can provide information about the source of organic matter, depositional environment, and maturity of source rock that is very useful for basin evaluation and understanding the petroleum system. In this paper, the study focuses on biomarker characterization of the Kelesa Formation that is situated in the Central Sumatra Basin, one of the petroliferous basins in Indonesia. This Eocene formation is equivalent to the Pematang Formation that is well known as acting as source rock in the Central Sumatra Basin. Thirty fresh outcrop samples were taken for biomarker analysis, with s

Abstract:
Groundwater resources development and the threat of future drought in Garfield County, southwestern Utah, prompted a study of groundwater quality and quantity in the environs of Bryce Canyon National Park and Bryce Canyon City in Johns and Emery Valleys. Water quality, water quantity, and the potential for water-quality degradation are critical elements determining the extent and nature of future development in the valley. The community of Bryce Canyon City is an area of active tourism and, therefore, of potential increase in growth (likely from tourism-related development). Groundwater exists
