Abstract:
The use of language primarily displays succession, not simultaneity. It is common for people to talk at the same time or interrupt each other, but this is reduced to cases of succession. Vedic ritual involves not only succession but also simultaneities that are structural.1 In the “Soma swelling” rite, many priests recite two groups of mantras, A and B. First, one priest recites A while touching the bundle of Soma stalks. He then steps aside and recites B without touching Soma. At the same time, the next priest recites A and touches Soma. The result is that A and B are recited simultaneously but Soma is touched once by only one priest at a time. Other structural simultaneities may be attributed to a “horror of gaps.” A separate class are stage directions. A final comment is made on multifunctionality in space, a parallel to the temporal concept of simultaneity.

Abstract:
Contemporary scholars struggling to keep their work politically meaningful and efficacious often, with the best of intentions, invoke the triad of race, gender and class. But though this three-part mantra is persistently and even passionately recited, usually in the introductory paragraphs of a scholarly piece, ‘attentive listening,’ as historian Douglas M. Peers asserts, ‘reveals that class is sounded with little more than a whisper’ (825). Unlike the other two, class largely remains an under-explored and, consequently, little understood category of experience and inquiry. I can say with certainty that this is true in my own field of postcolonial studies, with its sub-discipline of colonial discourse analysis. In part because of the politically justifiable emphasis on race in postcolonial research and theory (and only later, through feminist insistence, was that emphasis broadened to include gender), we have yet to develop as sustained, various, and subtle a critique of class as that which now exists for race and gender.

Abstract:
Quran as holy book for Muslim consists of many rules which are needed to be considered in reading Quran verse properly. If the recitation does not meet all of those rules, the meaning of Quran verse recited will be different with its origins. Intensive learning is needed to be able to do correct recitation. However, the limitation of teachers and time to study Quran verse recitation together in a class could be an obstacle in Quran recitation learning. In order to minimize the obstacle and to ease the learning process we implement speech recognition techniques based on Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) features and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) modeling, we have successfully designed and developed Quran verse recitation learning software in prototype stage. This software is interactive multimedia software which has many features for learning flexibility and effectiveness. This paper explains the developing of speech recognition system for Quran learning software which is built with the ability to perform evaluation and correction in Quran recitation. In this paper, the authors present clearly the built and tested prototype of the system based on experiment data.

One of the goals is to provide early reading learning for elementary / MI children in the lower classes, namely classes 1, 2 and 3. The learning process especially reads at MI Al-Hikmah Purwodadi, who still uses the manual method by spelling with letters that students already know making students a little confused because they don't really understand the letters of the alphabet. Most of the students of Al-Hikmah Purwodadi were mostly recited at the TPA so that the students understood the hijaiyah letters more than the letters of the alphabet. Many students face difficulties in reading the beginning because of the background of students who are not from kindergarten graduates. As a solution to provide convenience for students who read the beginning and for MI Al-Hikmah Purwodadi teachers to simplify the learning process by using motivational and interesting methods and media to learn to read the beginning. In this service the method used is the iqra method. The results and benefits of service are increasing reading interest in MI Al Hikmah Purwodadi students, increasing knowledge and understanding of 1st grade students of MI Al-Hikmah Purwodadi in reading, increasing reading skills in class 1 MI Al-Hikmah Purwodadi. Abstract:
AbstractWe investigate feature selection methods for machine learning approaches in sentiment analysis. More specifically, we use data from the cooking platform Epicurious and attempt to predict ratings for recipes based on user reviews. In machine learning approaches to such tasks, it is a common approach to use word or part-of-speech n-grams. This results in a large set of features, out of which only a small subset may be good indicators for the sentiment. One of the questions we investigate concerns the extension of feature selection methods from a binary classification setting to a multi-class problem. We show that an inherently multi-class approach, multi-class information gain, outperforms ensembles of binary methods. We also investigate how to mitigate the effects of extreme skewing in our data set by making our features more robust and by using review and recipe sampling. We show that over-sampling is the best method for boosting performance on the minority classes, but it also results in a severe drop in overall accuracy of at least 6 per cent points.

This present work aims to historicize which way the apparatus of the State could not control or socially working classes of Recife through the study of criminal cases during the period from 1920 to 1930. Throughout this process we realized that there was no uniformity in the policies of the state, much less in how they were run, not counting the many different designs and potential for modernization of Recife or social control. We will also do considerations about how these policies affect the way or not these poor workers we studied used their free time to be amused or other activities in Recife. Within this procedure was contemplated in analysis the complex process that involved a police side, the other, policed and often ended in the creation of strife and conflict. For this we will use newspapers and periodicals of general circulation as the Jornal do Recife and A Província, and medium circulation in Recife as the Jornal Pequeno: Regular oriented the humbler classes of the population of the city and who had a column for the "Cousas da cidade" and turned to the public amusements. We use throughout the development of this work the vast collection of documents belonging to the Memorial da Justiça de Pernambuco / TJPE, especially their criminal cases for the years between 1920 and 1930. Through exhaustive analysis of these processes aim to diagnose that forms the "constituted power" are used to control socially humble people. Another documentary will supply the lists belonging to the Arquivo Público Estadual Jordão Emereciano, in particular the lists of petitions and ordinances issued during the period 1920-1930 by the Departamento de Segurança Pública for the functioning of various public entertainments.

This research aims to investigate the daily lives of men and women of the working class city of Recife (1890-1915), at a time when concern about female honor, family preservation, the polarization of home space versus the street, and the value of free labor relate to the subject of national progress and the modernization of cities. Thus, taking into account the number of women than men, the vast number of existing widows in the state of Pernambuco, a considerable portion of domestic workers and the high illiteracy rate during the early years of the Republic, will seek to study the female experiences and men of the working class in their daily lives, in their conflicts arising from the precarious material, gender relations, class and color. Through a documentary corpus of criminal proceedings and journals, we propose to analyze small fragments of life of these subjects, they shared the same material reality and a chain of relationships involving standards of morality and honesty defined by gender cleavages, class and color. Investigate how men and women in pursuit of their livelihood and their peers, building their relations of solidarity and cronyism ties, touting identities, resisting and negotiating to / with publicized standards of morality.

This research investigates female domestic workers in Recife and Salvador, their experiences, their struggles, their formation as a class and the precariousness of their lives, in the emancipation conjuncture of the final years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through literature, fiction, criminal and civil lawsuits, newspaper advertisements and official documentation, I try to reconstitute the life experiences of black, half-breed and white domestics, slaves, free and manumitted. I argue that those domestics managed their lives in contexts of precariousness, but somehow succeeded to produce experiences of a class identity in formation. They not only were forming themselves as a class just from their own experiences. Literary texts produced by writers and memoirists from Bahia and Pernambuco tried to put them in social and racial subordinate places, attached to paternalistic and proslavery values still resistant to the advancement of formal rules of labor relations. But despite the wealth of literary sources in the production and dissemination of submission values and the subordinate place of the domestic work, I endorse that the set of social experiences of women who engaged in domestic work in the coming years pre and postemancipation put on suspicion idyllic images which associate domestic service to servilism, to harmony between employers and employees. Finally, despite the focus on class formation, I reconstituted wider experiences of popular daily conflicts in which the female domestic workers had participation, believing that not only in the working relationship a class is formed.

Abstract:
This work seeks to establish the relationship between life in the big cities of the Brazilian Southeast, particularly in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the practice as well as the way culinary knowledge was shared during the 20th century. The moment of formation of the Brazilian middle class, the availability of consumer goods related to modernity, e.g. the gas stove, appliances and industrialized foods, combined with the role attributed to women in the new urban social order, created a rupture in the way culinary recipes were prepared and passed down from one generation to another. This rupture was followed by a new culinary pattern, which in turn affected the values and the symbology comprised in the cooking act.

In particular, it stresses the contributions of women in the establishment of the movement in Belém in 1911, its subsequent founding in Recife, and its continuing rapid expansion into the Northeastern backlands over the past eighty years. The current state of the Northeastern church and the role of women within the institution is discussed in light of both social and cultural factors interacting with this 'new religion'. The study commences by establishing the historical and cutural background of Recife and the Northeast, with a view to understanding the social context of the lives of the working class. An historical examination of the early attempts to establish Protestant religion in the Northeast follows, in chapter two. Chapter three details the entry of Pentecostalism into the Brazilian Northeast. This historical survey provides the context for the subsequent chapters of the thesis. Chapter four focuses specifically on the history of the Recifense church. Chapter five examines the unique historical contributions by which women have helped to mould the modern Brazilian Pentecostal church. It is argued that the dynamic female presence in the movement was central to its success in establishing a credible religious alternative to Catholicism and other Protestant denominations. Chapter six is a discussion on the life of working-class women within the Pentecostal community, detailing those factors relating to conversion and approved lifestyle within the church. Chapter seven seeks to demonstrate how Pentecostalism has elevated the social position of working-class women through education. A discussion on the adaptation of popular literature as a mechanism for socializing women toward specific moralistic norms is included. Finally this study contrasts the tenets of Pentecostalism with Northeastern working-class culture, in an attempt to analyse the means by which Pentecostalism is a catalyst both for individual and societal change. In the absence of a comprehensive work on the history of Pentecostal women in Brazil, the method adopted here was to conduct a micro-study using participant-observation techniques at the grass-roots level, as each Pentecostal congregation is autonomous. Thus, although Pentecostals share certain basic beliefs, each congregation has its own distinctive approach to the problems of its local constituency. It is argued that the great strength of Pentecostalism lies precisely in this autonomy and the flexibility which this allows. The thesis aims to bring together both oral and written sources in order to reflect the varying perspectives of each individual and thus to represent a 'living' history.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses some of the later psychological dimensions inherent within adolescents' and adults' internalization of a poem. It sets Thomas Gray's “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” within a very specific institutional and emotional history, directing attention to the mingled pain and pleasure that can exist within the possession of a cultural object. This chapter considers how the highest-achieving elementary-school pupils might have felt when they read and recited a work that dubs the poor both unlettered and mute. Further, it speculates about the ability of the memorized poem to stay within those individuals for the remainder of their days, and to act as a constant reminder of the educational and social processes that moved them out of one class and into another—an elevation the eighteenth-century poem deems impossible.

Abstract:
Food and taste have become symbols of neighborhood transformation and powerful tools of urban renewal. Building on Bourdieu’s notion of taste as social distinction, we argue that food distinguishes places, giving some neighborhoods character and value, while stigmatizing others as food deserts. Although new and reclaimed food spaces seem to transform gentrifying neighborhoods and attract newcomers, food insecurity remains a significant concern among long-term residents, who resent recent changes and feel displaced. This chapter relies on qualitative reviews of restaurants in two rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods of San Diego to show how tastes become ways for newcomers and long-term residents to relate to each other, reflecting broader socio-spatial processes associated with class, race, and ethnicity.

Abstract:
In broad brush strokes, gentrification encompasses the redevelopment of working-class communities for more affluent residents. However, in New York City, many of the communities currently experiencing gentrification are also home to food-producing community gardens that have traditionally emerged in response to long-term attempts by City Hall to displace residents of color. How are community gardeners responding to the transformations that come with gentrification and what is the role of community gardens in facilitating, accommodating, or resisting gentrification? To answer these questions, we trace the complex and contested relationship between food-producing community gardens and gentrification in three neighborhoods in the outer boroughs of New York City and discuss the implications of our findings for realizing food justice in New York City.

Abstract:
The chapter discusses how Labour Party women engaged with the newly-enfranchised housewife between the wars. It focuses on how Labour Woman represented the working-class housewife and the degree to which it enabled her to speak for herself. It chose everyday domestic life, traditionally assumed to be beyond politics, as the way to connect with unorganised women in their homes. In its Housewife Column the relevance of politics to women’s daily lives was explored through domestic topics such food prices, housework, washing and making clothes. Even with the increasing dominance of recipes and dress patterns in the 1930s, the journal continued to see the housewife as having agency and a distinct experience shaped by class. For Labour Woman interwar domesticity was neither cosy nor rationalised and modern, it was a space which provided the means to engage with the everyday lives of ordinary women.

Abstract:
We have used a food intersections approach to explore the ways that gentrification is enacted and contested. Food and gentrification are certainly linked in the popular imagination; media coverage of gentrification often references food businesses like coffee shops, hip takes on working-class or ethnic cuisines, and urban farms as symbolic of a neighborhood’s new up-and-coming status. And materially, these food spaces are often the first to open in a gentrifying neighborhood, making more visible the presence of whiter and wealthier residents who may have begun trickling in, and signaling to other would-be new residents that this space deserves their attention. At the same time, any strategic effort to address gentrification through food activism must begin by better anticipating the unintended consequences of alternative food systems and social entrepreneurial endeavors. This insight builds on critical food scholarship that encourages well-meaning food activists, particularly white ones, to be aware of macro-level social and economic processes of racism and economic exploitation that imbue them with privileges while constraining the lives of low-income people and people of color. We offer some tentative thoughts on strategies to address food and gentrification at micro-, meso-, and macro-scales, from individual actions to national policies.

Abstract:
DNV is currently running a Joint Industry Project, “NorMoor JIP”, on calibration of safety factors for mooring lines together with several oil companies, engineering companies, rig-owners, manufacturers of mooring line components and Norwegian authorities. Our motivation for initiating a study on mooring line safety factors started out with questions raised with regards to the safety level given by the Norwegian regulations. However, this is equally important for other mooring regulations like ISO, API and class-regulations. What we see is that the mooring standards are interpreted and applied in different ways. The reliability level implied by the regulations is not known, and the present safety factors were set when frequency domain analysis was prevalent while time domain analysis is often applied today. DNV carried out the DeepMoor JIP [9] during 1995–2000 using frequency domain analysis and reliability-based calibration. Now, a decade later, the increase in computing capacity makes it feasible to carry out a similar calibration for time-domain analysis of the mooring systems. The objective of the project work is to investigate and compare the characteristic line tension calculated according to design standards with the annual extreme value distribution of the line tension. Further, to calibrate safety factors for mooring line design for the ultimate limit state (ULS) as a function of the target probability of failure. The original proposal for this JIP included calculations for chain and wire rope moorings on a typical drill rig and a turret moored FPSO at three different water depths at Haltenbanken. However, since this JIP has been very well received in the industry, the scope has been extended to include calculations for a production semisubmersible, for fibre rope systems and for Gulf of Mexico environmental conditions. This paper will focus on the reasons for doing this calibration study, and the importance of seeking to agree on unified calculation recipes and requirements. Preliminary results for characteristic tension and annual extreme value distributions of tension for some designs are presented and discussed. The calibration of safety factors will be carried out later in the project when all designs are finalized.

Abstract:
In Canada, a great deal of effort has been invested into the use of reliability-based techniques for the design and assessment of non-sour natural gas transmission pipelines. This led to the inclusion of Annex O in the Canadian onshore pipeline code CSA Z662 in 2007, which gives detailed descriptions of all of the key components of reliability-based approaches. However, the annex does not and is not intended to provide recipes for using the reliability-based techniques for particular fields of application such as evaluating the acceptability of changes to location class, service or increasing maximum operating pressure. Consequently, the onus is on the reliability/integrity engineer to tailor the approach to the particular field of application and the specifics of the pipeline. This means that even working in accordance with the code, the approach and optimizing techniques adopted by one engineer may be very different to that adopted by another. This presents a challenge for those reviewing reliability based plans, designs and alternatives for approval. The National Energy Board (NEB) engaged Andrew Francis & Associates Ltd (AFAA) to assist them with constructing a set of supporting guidelines to assess the comprehensiveness and safety of reliability based submissions. Unlike customary design reviews, the guidelines are geared towards provoking a reviewer into asking delving questions rather than into going through a ‘box-checking’ questionnaire. Indeed, asking the case-specific and clarification questions is regarded as a crucial step towards determining the adequacy and effectiveness of the measures proposed in the content and conclusions of a particular filing. Simply questioning whether Annex O has been followed is not encouraged and, even when safety criteria appear to have been met (i.e. box-checking), a reviewer is prompted to challenge the reasonableness of assumptions and ask whether safety levels are providing the lowest practicable risk to the Canadian public. One line of inquiring might be: are sufficient data available; are the data reliable; are the data relevant to the case under consideration; or have the data been analyzed using a valid method applicable to the case. Other typical questions would be have the consequences been properly assessed and are the mitigative and preventative measures providing the lowest practicable risk compared to pressure reduction and pipe replacement. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the assessment guidelines and the approach and key considerations for conducting efficient, consistent and fair reviews of reliability based assessments of hazardous material pipelines. In doing so, the paper also identifies some of the pitfalls that engineers conducting reliability based integrity assessments should seek to avoid.
