Abstract:
Parental care is an important factor influencing offspring survival and adult reproductive success in many vertebrates. Parent–offspring recognition ensures care is only directed to filial young, avoiding the costs of misallocated resource transfer. It is essential in colonial mammal species, such as otariids (fur seals and sea lions), in which repeated mother–offspring separations increase the risk of misdirecting maternal effort. Identification of otariid pups by mothers is known to be multi-modal, yet the role of visual cues in this process remains uncertain. We used three-dimensional visual models to investigate the importance of visual cues in maternal recognition of pups in Australian sea lions ( Neophoca cinerea ). We showed that the colour pattern of pup pelage in the absence of any other sensory cues served to attract the attention of females and prompt investigation. Furthermore, females were capable of accurately distinguishing between models imitating the age-class of their own pup and those resembling older or younger age-classes. Our results suggest that visual cues facilitate age-class discrimination of pups by females and so are likely to play an important role in mother–pup reunions and recognition in otariid species.

Gibbs, Ewan. "‘It’s Not a Lot of Boring Old Gits Sitting about Remembering the Good Old Days’: The Heritage and Legacy of the 1987 Caterpillar Factory Occupation in Uddingston, Scotland." Labour History Review: Volume 86, Issue 1 86, no. 1 (April 1, 2021): 117–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/lhr.2021.6.

Abstract:
This paper examines the construction of a factory occupation’s ‘usable past’. It analyses how the political culture of the multinational ‘branch plant’ has combined with the optics of class and nation that predominate in accounts of Scottish deindustrialization. During 2017, the Caterpillar Workers Legacy Group commemorated the occupation of Caterpillar’s tractor plant in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, thirty years earlier. The occupation endured for 103 days, becoming a labour-movement cause célèbre. Commemoration included workforce reunions, museum exhibitions, drama performances and an anniversary debate in the Scottish Parliament. Legacy Group members archived the occupation ‘from below’, including by recording oral testimonies. The occupation was rooted in a tradition of ‘rank-and-filist’ factory trade unionism and sustained by a left-wing activist infrastructure which shaped the dispute’s contemporary framing and historical legacy. A culture of radical labourism that rejected managerial authority and profit-making as the factory’s basis for operation enthused the occupation’s defence of the right to work. These actions now form the basis for embedding a political and cultural ‘working-class presence’ long after Caterpillar departed from Uddingston. The (co-) production of labour-movement heritages is a complex process, shaped by enduring activist repertoires as well as dominant public memories.

Chapter Two gauges hegemonic and/or resistive meanings, readings, or outcomes in or related to traditional and digital institutions, tools, texts, practices, participatory cultures, and identities associated with taking up and/or performing genealogy. It scrutinizes issues of privacy, race, ethnicity, class, gender, age, and intersected identities in such terms. The chapter highlights genealogical tourism and family reunions in light of the racial/ethnic dimensions of the author’s auto-ethnographic sojourns. It also elaborates existing theory and research on social and digital media and situates these insights in terms of day-to-day practices of genealogy.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the process by which Korean Chinese were ethnicized as a transnational working class moving between China and South Korea. Korean Chinese first resumed their relationship with the long-forbidden homeland of South Korea through kinship reunions, marriage migration, and eventually labor migration. Kin-related migration rapidly shifted to labor migration, which caused a rapid growth of undocumented labor and frequent deportations because South Korean visa regulations did not accommodate the influx of Korean Chinese workers. This chapter historicizes the ways in which the South Korean government accorded legal recognition to Korean Chinese as transnational ethnic migrant workers, through the Overseas Korean Act (1999) and revised visa regulations (2005).

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic the educational processes were interrupted in most of the countries in the world. Governments switched from face-to-face education to online sessions using learning management systems and video and audio communication tools. Pupils connect to online classes using laptops, tablets, and sometimes using mobile phones. These methods are exhausting and tiring for the pupils, so a limit of half of the time used in the face-to-face classes was set for the online classes. This approach restricts the number of hours a tutor works directly with their students. Probably the theoretical aspects are presented to the class and then a limited set of examples are given. Normally, a tutor should check individually the activity of each pupil, but this is not possible because of the time restrictions. In this context learning objects and more specifically auto-generative learning objects complements the tutors by: i) proposing exercises to pupils; ii) grading automatically the pupil answers; and iii) offering feedbacks on the given answers. In this sense, we applied the proposed approach on a group of 8th grade, 50 pupils, at the Arithmetic disciplines focusing on intervals and inequations. We created nine auto-generative learning objects where reunion, intersection, the difference of intervals was exercised. We modeled learning objects for five types of inequations. The study shows that the proposed method's effectiveness is very close to the classic evaluation method. We collected the opinions of pupils in a satisfaction questionnaire about using auto-generative learning objects and the results state that 92% of pupils liked them.

Abstract:

À luz do materialismo histórico-dialético, o trabalho é pesquisa qualitativa, consubstanciada por Marx (2013), Tiriba & Fischer (2015), Tiriba (2012), Vendramini & Tiriba (2018), Reis & Gomes (2012), Pinto (2001, 2004, 2013), Rodrigues (2012), dentre outros.
