Full text
Abstract:
This chapter gives a brief overview of theories of truth based on non-classical logics. It sticks to the most central motivation for such theories—the liar paradox—and focuses on a range of responses that have been made to this paradox. The chapter presents the paradox, and shows how it leads to trouble for classical logic. Then the chapter proceeds to lay out four families of response, which we call “paracomplete,” “paraconsistent,” “nontransitive,” and “noncontractive.” For each kind of theory, the chapter goes on to show how it can block paradoxical derivations, and gives references to sources that develop it more fully.

Full text
Abstract:
DNA references databases are a prerequisite to identify sequences obtained from a metabarcoding experiments. Chapter 3 “Reference databases” gives a brief description of the content and structure of existing generalistic resources and proposes guidelines to construct reference databases specific to the metabarcode of interest, when no specific databases are available. The method presented consists in capturing all sequences corresponding to the metabarcode in generalistic international repositories by using the program ecoPCR. Second, existing resources specific to rRNAs or classical barcodes are presented. Finally, this chapter develops strategies relying on either on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), or on genome skimming, to enrich existing databases with new species from fresh specimens or collections in museums. This chapter does not deal with taxonomic assignment per se, which is discussed in Chapter 8.

Prussing, John E. Optimal Spacecraft Trajectories. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198811084.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Optimal spacecraft trajectories are given a modern comprehensive treatment of the theory and important results. In most cases “optimal” means minimum propellant. Less propellant required results in more payload delivered to the destination. Both necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal solution are analysed. Numerous illustrative examples are included and problems are provided at the ends of the chapters along with references. Newer topics such as cooperative rendezvous and second-order conditions are considered. Seven appendices are included to supplement the text, some with problems. Both classical results and newer research results are included. A new test for a conjugate point is demonstrated. The book is both a graduate-level textbook and a scholarly reference book.
