Abstract:
In the theory of measurement, there are two competing measurement frameworks, classical test theory and item response theory. The present study empirically examined, using large scale norm-referenced data, how the item and person statistics behaved under the two competing measurement frameworks. The study focused on two central themes: (1) How comparable are the item and person statistics derived from the item response and classical test framework? (2) How invariant are the item statistics from each measurement framework across examinee samples? The findings indicate that, in a variety of cond

This study is an empirical analysis of the 2009 and 2010 forms of the Gyeonggi English Communicative Ability Test (GECAT) based on the responses of 2,307 students to the 2009 GECAT and 2,907 students to the 2010 GECAT. The GECAT is an English proficiency examination sponsored by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (GOE) in South Korea. This multiple-choice test has been administered annually at the end of each school year to high school students since 2004 as a measure of the students' ability to communicate in English. Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) have been used in all four first-year Chemistry courses at The University of Adelaide for many years to assess the students both during the semester and within the final examinations. Ensuring that the assessment tasks and the items used within them are a valid method of determining student competency is an important part of reviewing the results of the assessments. Throughout this research all the MCQ assessment tasks and items used in first-year Chemistry courses between 2012-2015 were reviewed and analysed using Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Rasch Analysis

Abstract:
Dynamic assessment, which is often characterised by the learning potential approach across the world and in South Africa, is receiving more and more attention from educators and research practitioners alike. The nature of dynamic assessment lends itself to application in areas where prior dependence on static (traditional) forms of psychometric assessment can no longer be sustained as viable options towards assessment. A main focus area within dynamic assessment is the field of tertiary selections and admissions. More research is needed in this field in South Africa and in order to progress wi

Abstract:
This study empirically compares the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Partial Credit Model (PCM) of Rasch focusing on the invariance of item parameters. The invariance concept which is the consequence of the principle of specific objectivity was tested in both CTT and PCM using the results of learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Mathematics examinations in 2010. The difficulty levels of the test items were estimated from the independent samples of learn- ers. The same sample of learners used in the calibration of the difficulty levels of the test items in the PCM mo

Three decision consistency and accuracy (DC/DA) methods, the Livingston and Lewis (LL) method, LEE method, and the Hambleton and Han (HH) method, were evaluated. The purposes of the study were: (1) to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of these methods, especially when their assumptions were not well satisfied, (2) to investigate the “true” DC/DA indices in various conditions, and (3) to assess the impact of choice of reliability estimate on the LL method. Four simulation studies were conducted: Study 1 looked at various test lengths. Study 2 focused on local item dependency (LID). Study 3 c

This thesis explores item response theory (IRT) in the Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) from Thomas International. The study contains two parts (Part 1 and Part II) for which two sample groups were collected. For Part I of the research 650 participants were collected via the old form (CPPA25/C7) in the Beijing office of Thomas International in China (male=323, Female=267, missing=60). Part II of the research used the amended form in the same area and collected a sample of 307 (male=185, female=119, missing=3). The study postulates that IRT methods are applicable to forced-choice psychome

Contexte.
