Abstract:
Tree-based methods are a nice add-on to traditional statistical methods when solving classification and regression problems. The aim of this master thesis is not to judge which approach is better but rather bring the overview of these methods and apply them on the real data using R. Focus is made especially on the basic methodology of tree-based models and the application in specific software in order to provide wide range of tool for reader to be able to use these methods. One part of the thesis touches the advanced tree-based methods to provide full picture of possibilities.

Traditionally, investment practitioners and academics alike have used stock fundamentals and a linear framework in order to predict future stock performance. This approach has been shown to have flaws as literature has shown that stock returns can exhibit non-linearity and involve complex relations beyond that of a linear nature (Hsieh, 1991; Sarantis, 2001; Shively, 2003). These findings present an opportunity to investment practitioners who are better able to model these returns. The inquiry documented in this thesis is located at the nexus of technological innovation and traditional schooling. As we enter the second decade of a new century, few would argue against the increasingly urgent need to integrate digital literacies with traditional academic knowledge. Yet, despite substantial investments from governments and businesses, the adoption and diffusion of contemporary digital tools in formal schooling remain sluggish. To date, research on technology adoption in schools tends to take a deficit perspective of schools and teachers, with the lack of resources and teach

At the beginning, the work describes DNS and SSL/TLS protocols, it mainly deals with communication between devices using these protocols. Then we'll talk about data preprocessing and data cleaning. Furthermore, the thesis deals with basic data mining techniques such as data classification, association rules, information retrieval, regression analysis and cluster analysis. The next chapter we can read something about how to identify mobile devices on the network. We will evaluate data sets that contain collected data from communication between the above mentioned protocols, which will be used i

This goal of this project is to develop a set of business rules to mitigate risk related to a specific financial decision within the prepaid debit card industry. Under certain circumstances issuers of prepaid debit cards may need to decide if funds on hold can be released early for use by card holders prior to the final transaction settlement. After a brief introduction to the prepaid card industry and the financial risk associated with the early release of funds on hold, the paper presents the motivation to apply the CART (Classification and Regression Trees) method. The paper provides a tuto

Haplotype-based approaches incorporate information from multiple adjacent single nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs) and may have greater power than single-locus analyses when the SNPs are in strong linkage disequilibrium with the risk locus. Unfortunately, the number of distinct haplotypes increases rapidly as the number of SNPs increases. To overcome potential complexities owing to large numbers of haplotypes in genetic studies, we evaluated two dat

The data items include the holder’s age, education, gender, marriage status, job category, line of credit, annual income, JCIC credit score and default record. The default record indicates whether the holder has been in default or no default on the payment. Decision Classification Tree and Logistic regression are used to construct the prediction models. Tree based methods for regression and classification have a long and successful history in statistics and data–analysis and are essentially based on a recursive partition of the covariate space, possibly driven by specific testing procedures design to control branch creation. Starting from the conditional approach introduced in where the choice of the split–variable and the split–value are divided into two different steps allowing an unbiased feature selection, in this work we introduce an energy based testing scheme to validate each of these phases. Energy methods are based on metrics s
