Abstract:
With the growing size of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), both API usability and API learning become more challenging. API learning resources are often crucial for helping developers learn an API, but they are distributed across different documents, which makes finding the necessary information more challenging. This work focuses on discovering relevant sections of tutorials for a given API type. We approach this problem by identifying API types in an API tutorial, dividing the tutorial into small fragments and classifying them based on linguistic and structural features. The system we developed can ease information discovery for the developers who need information about a particular API type. Experiments conducted on five tutorials show that our approach is able to discover sections relevant to an API type with 0.79 average precision, 0.73 average recall, and 0.75 average F1 measure when trained and tested on the same tutorial. When trained on four tutorials and tested on a fifth tutorial the average precision is 0.84, average recall is 0.62, and the F1 measure is 0.71.

Abstract:
Android malware collusion is a new threat model that occurs when multiple Android apps communicate in order to execute an attack. This threat model threatens all Android users' private information and system resource security. Although recent research has made advances in collusion detection and classification, security analysts still do not have robust tools which allow them to definitively identify colluding Android applications. Specifically, in order to determine whether an alert produced by a tool scanning for Android collusion is a true-positive or a false-positive, the analyst must perform manual analysis of the suspected apps, which is both time consuming and prone to human errors. In this thesis, we present a new approach to definitive Android collusion detection and confirmation by rendering inter-component communications between a set of potentially collusive Android applications. Inter-component communications (abbreviated to ICCs), are a feature of the Android framework that allows components from different applications to communicate with one another. Our approach allows Android security analysts to inspect all ICCs within a set of suspicious Android applications and subsequently identify collusive attacks which utilize ICCs. Furthermore, our approach also visualizes all potentially collusive data-flows within each component within a set of apps. This allows analysts to inspect, step-by-step, the the data-flows that are currently used by collusive attacks, or the data-flows that could be used for future collusive attacks. Our tool effectively visualizes the malicious and benign ICCs in sets of proof-of-concept and real-world colluding applications. We conducted a user study which revealed that our approach allows for accurate and efficient identification of true- and false-positive collusive ICCs while still maintaining usability.
Master of Science

Abstract:
Master of Science
Department of Computing and Information Sciences
Doina Caragea
Social media affects our daily lives. It is one of the first sources for finding breaking news. In particular, Twitter is one of the popular social media platforms, with around 330 million monthly users. From local events such as Fake Patty's Day to across the world happenings - Twitter gets there first. During a disaster, tweets can be used to post warnings, status of available medical and food supply, emergency personnel, and updates. Users were practically tweeting about the Hurricane Sandy, despite lack of network during the storm. Analysis of these tweets can help monitor the disaster, plan and manage the crisis, and aid in research. In this research, we use the publicly available tweets posted during several disasters and identify the relevant tweets. As the languages in the datasets are different, Bing translation API has been used to detect and translate the tweets. The translations are then, used as training datasets for supervised machine learning algorithms. Supervised learning is the process of learning from a labeled training dataset. This learned classifier can then be used to predict the correct output for any valid input. When trained to more observations, the algorithm improves its predictive performance.

Aubier, Thomas G. "Diversity of warning signals, speciation and clade diversification." Thesis, Montpellier, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018MONTG019/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The display of warning signals by unpalatable (or otherwise defended) prey provides a wonderful opportunity for establishing an integrative view of biological diversification. Warning signals are known to be under strong natural and sexual selection. On the one hand, the sampling strategy of predators, characterized by a learned avoidance of signals associated with unpalatability, generates natural selection in favour of warning signals in high frequency in the prey community. Such positive frequency-dependent selection favours phenotypic uniformity and causes unpalatable species to converge on common warning signals (mutualistic "Müllerian" mimicry), as seen in a large panel of taxa. On the other hand, warning signals are used as a phenotypic cue for mate choice, generating sexual selection with important consequences for reproductive isolation and speciation. Paradoxically, despite powerful selection favouring phenotypic convergence, warning signals are fantastically diverse, both within and between species, and this morphological diversification is often associated with extensive species diversification at the clade level. In this thesis, I tackle this apparent paradox from the ground up and I thereby refine our understanding of the role of positive frequency-dependent selection and mutualistic interactions for evolutionary diversification at micro- and macroevolutionary scales. First, I show that the predator sampling strategy can favour the emergence of diversity of warning signals despite positive frequency-dependent selection. Second, I dissect the conditions allowing the evolution of strong and stable reproductive isolation, necessary for speciation to occur, in a number of ecological situations where warning signals are under natural and sexual selection. Third, I highlight important indirect effects of frequency-dependent selection on diversification at macro-evolutionary scale via spatial constraints and by-product ecological convergence

Abstract:
Exploring upon the phenomena of smart cities, this paper elaborates the potential of crowdsourced data collection in small scale urban quarters. The development of the Data4City (D4C) hyperlocal app – PinCity – is based on the idea of increasing the density of real-time information in urban areas (urban neighborhoods) in order to optimize or create innovative urban services (such as public transportation, garbage collection) or urban planning, thus improving the quality of life of quarter inhabitants as a long-term goal. The main principle of the app is the small-scale implementation, as opposed to top-down smart city approaches worldwide, preferably in a city quarter, or a community, which can be subsequently scaled and interlaced to other parts of the city.

As such, we need to develop effective tools and curricula for introducing machine learning to novices. My work focuses on teaching core machine learning concepts with image classification, one of the most basic and widespread examples of machine learning. I built a web interface that allows users to train and test personalized image classification models on pictures taken with their computers--webcams. Furthermore, I built an extension for MIT App Inventor, a platform for building mobile applications using a blocks-based programming language, that allows users to use the models they built in the web interface to classify objects in their mobile applications. Finally, I created high school level curricula for workshops based on using the aforementioned interface and App Inventor extension, and ran the workshops with two classes of high school students from Boston Latin Academy. My findings indicate that high school students with no machine learning background are able to learn and understand general concepts and applications of machine learning through hands-on, non-technical activities, as well as successfully utilize models they built for personal use.
by Danny Tang.
M. Abstract:
Previous research has shown gender differences in the motivations to be physically active, in mobile phone gratifications, and social media usage, but so far these areas have not been studied together. Based on the uses and gratification approach and self-determination theory, we aimed to identify gender-specific gratifications and determinants of fitness app usage in combination with fitness-related Facebook groups. Results of an online survey (N = 171) and of a mobile experience sampling method (N = 31) revealed that the app Runtastic was primarily used for achieving goals and to improve enjoyment for physical activity, with men and older participants sharing results with others in Facebook groups more often than women and younger participants. Conclusions regarding genderspecific targeting strategies and user-centered design and content of mHealth features are presented.

Abstract:
Spectral karyotyping (SKY) is a widely used methodology to identify genetic aberrations. Multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization using chromosome painting probes in individual colors for all metaphase chromosomes at once is combined with a unique spectral measurement and analysis system to automatically classify normal and aberrant chromosomes. Based on countless studies and investigations in many laboratories worldwide, numerous new chromosome translocations and other aberrations have been identified in clinical and tumor cytogenetics. Thus, gene identification studies have been facilitated resulting in the dissection of tumor development and progression. For example, different translocation partners of the TEL/ETV6 transcription factor that is specially required for hematopoiesis within the bone marrow were identified. Also, the correct classification of complex karyotypes of solid tumors supports the prognostication of cancer patients. Important accomplishments for patients with genetic diseases, leukemias and lymphomas, mesenchymal tumors and solid cancers are summarized and exemplified. Furthermore, studies of disease mechanisms such as centromeric DNA breakage, DNA double strand break repair, telomere shortening and radiation-induced neoplastic transformation have been accompanied by SKY analyses. Besides the hybridization of human chromosomes, mouse karyotyping has also contributed to the comprehensive characterization of mouse models of human disease and for gene therapy studies.
Abstract:
The Android operating system offers, due to the increasing number of available mobile devices based on this system and also the rapidly increasing number of users of such devices, a very good basis for the development of various mobile applications. It can be relevant to every conceivable area of everyday life, especially leisure, but also work to develop an app based on Android. It currently still requires development of the offered mobile applications in the area of mobile event guides. There are numerous applications for trade shows, conferences and festivals, but they differ greatly in their functions and, above all in the presentation of maps and plans. Often, such apps are created based on a framework that allows the app to adapt to different events. The present paper describes the implementation of a conference guide for the International Cartographic Conference 2013 in Dresden. Basis for the implementation is the consideration of methods of orientation and navigation applications at indoor and outdoor areas for pedestrians and on major events. To this end, existing applications from the category large events will be studied. Besides the general features a focus is placed on the cartographic features of such apps. A framework, based on Android, which allows the creation of mobile applications for various large events, will be created as part of the work. This framework is adapted to the International Cartographic Conference 2013 and delivers as a result an application that can be used as a digital conference guide

Abstract:
Mobile applications are becoming more and more important in the daily life and offer interesting and completely new aspects to the field of cartography. The technological possibilities provided by computer science have had a large impact on cartography and therefore cartographers must be familiar with the development of software to present geographic information and make it accessible. With the recent rise of mobile devices like smartphones, it is inevitable that this has to include mobile platforms as well. The main focus of this Bachelor thesis is on the conceptual design and implementation of tutorials to teach the development of mobile applications or 'apps' for the Android platform. The tutorials are going to be part of exercises in a practical course that accompanies the lecture 'Mobile Cartography' held at the Institute of Cartography at the Dresden University of Technology. Five exercises have been created covering key aspects of Android programming with Java. The theoretical part of this thesis starts with providing definitions of important terms of mobile computing and mobile cartography that will play an important role throughout the thesis. After that possibilities of interaction with mobile and web applications are introduced and discussed briefly. Location-based services and their usage in the context of social networks are discussed in the following section before the sensors of mobile devices are analyzed. A brief discussion of the potential for augmented reality applications is also given. The following second section deals with mobile software platforms and focuses on the Android operating system for mobile devices. Within this section, the features of the Android framework are described and some specific characteristics of software development are explained. The third section is all about the conceptual design and implementation of the tutorials. Considering the requirements for the practical course and different aspects of learning, the pedagogical approach is described. Additionally the ECLASS model which has evolved in the context of E-Learning is explained as it provided the structure of the exercises. After that, the content of the five exercises which include basics, layout, internal interaction of components, database access and the integration of maps is reflected. Finally, a brief outlook on further possible exercises is given.

Abstract:
During recent years, the mobility service market has diversified: Innovative solutions like bike- and carsharing concepts increasingly fill the gap between individual car transport, and public transport. Most car owners, though, will only change to public transport, if travelling becomes as comfortable as car trips in terms of travelling routines, times, activities, and routes. In this context, smartphones indeed facilitate the access to public transport by enabling a flexible and spontaneous planning of bus, train, bike rental and carsharing trips “on the go”. Moreover, smartphones can enhance the feeling of security and privacy in public spaces in general. As a consequencee, navigating through the public transport network becomes much easier and comfortable for many user groups. Within the “cairo” project, researchers at InnoZ have assessed user preferences on mobile routing over a period of two years, and could therefore also detect changes over time. Apart from general requirements on technical functions, actual information needs with regards to location, transport modes, or routes have been a central subject of research. The results of this study are summarized in this Baustein.

Purpose: Periodontitis generally initiates in the interdental area, where biofilm development is difficult to interrupt. Mechanical cleaning with interdental brushes (IDB) offers an effective method for plaque control and prevents gingivitis and periodontitis. This study aimed to determine whether mechanical cleaning with interdental brushes combined with the use of cetylpyridinium chloride (0.3% CPC) gel was more effective at plaque control compared with mechanical cleaning with interdental brushes alone. Materials and Methods: Forty individuals (30 - 70 years) with at least 20 teeth and moderate chronic periodontitis who had no experience with interdental cleaning aids were randomly assigned to a treatment group (brush + gel, n = 20) or a control group (brush, n = 20). Both groups were examined by a dentist at baseline and at 3 and 6 months for changes in interdental plaque [interproximal plaque index (API)] levels, gingival inflammation [sulcus bleeding index (SBI)], probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing (BOP). Results: No baseline differences in age, gender, or number of teeth were observed between the two groups. During the study period, improvements in API and BOP were comparable between groups. However, improvements in SBI and PD were significantly greater in the test group than in the control group (P = 0.046 and P = 0.029, respectively). Conclusion: Mechanical interdental plaque control with interdental brushes combined with the use of CPC gel significantly improved 6-month gingival and periodontal outcomes (SBI and PD) compared with mechanical cleaning with interdental brushes alone.

Ye, Kun. "Inter-patient electrocardiogram heartbeat classification with 2-D convolutional neural network." Thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/12586.

Abstract:
Advanced computer technologies can transform the traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring system for better efficiency and accuracy. ECG records a heart's electrical activity using electrodes placed on the skin, and it has become an essential tool for arrhythmia detection. The complexity comes from the variety of patients' heartbeats and massive amounts of information for humans to process correctly. The first part of the thesis presents an image based two-dimensional convolution neural network (CNN) to classify the arrhythmia heartbeats with inter-patient paradigm. It includes a new data pre-processing method. The inter-patient paradigm simulates the practical use case of an ECG heartbeat classifier. Compared to the reported work in the literature, the proposed solution achieves superior experiment results. The rest of the thesis introduces the remote ECG monitoring system. The RESTful API design concepts of the system are described. The proposed API supports an efficient and secure way of interaction between each module in this remote monitoring system.
Graduate

Abstract:
Internet keeps growing everyday and with that, the creation of new web pages. Due to this fact, web pages of many different categories can be found such as News, Sports or Business. This issue has made investigators think about one innovative concept: Webpage Classification. This new approach implies the categorization of web pages to one or more category labels. Some research has been done during the last years using text and visual content extracted from the web pages to be able to classify. However, the need of being able to do such a thing in an Android app has not been investigated yet, to the best of our knowledge. Consequently, this thesis is focused in the development of an Android app which is able to classify web pages. First of all, text and visual features have to be extracted from each webpage. Four types of visual features were extracted from each web page to construct a visual features vector of 160 attributes. Concerning to the text features, a text features vector was also built for each of the webpage with 160 attributes. To do so, a “Bag-Of-Words” of one hundred and sixty words was set up from the HTML code already extracted and filtered. Thus, we end up having a full vector of 320 attributes for each webpage. A binary classification was performed trying to distinguish web pages for Adults and for Kids. Good results were obtained especially when using AdaBoost classifier with text and visual features where a 94.44% of accuracy of correct classifications was achieved.

Abstract:
101
With the industrial development of computers, app markets offer a variety of applications for users. However, a problem is that the classifications of applications may conflict with users’ cognition and lead to waste time while searching for applications. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find a structure of these classifications that meet users’ mental models. In this study, three app markets including Google Play、Windows Marketplace and Samsung Apps were examined. The card sorting technique and cluster analysis were used for analyzing the data collected from the participants. An experiment was designed with four simulated websites. One was based on the data from the participants. The other three were based on the app market that had different classifications of applications. Searching time was designed as the dependent variable. Result showed that significant differences were found among the four app markets websites. The quickest searching time was found in the use of the website based on participants’ mental models. Compared to other three websites, this search time has reduced by up to 235%, and at least 115%. This study confirms that the user-centered structure of the classifications of applications can improve the searching time of applications. The findings of this study should be able to help for the classifications of applications, and it can provide a reference for the future research and development of related industries.

Pfeffer, Johannes.

Abstract:
The transformation of industrial processes towards Industry 4.0 and the increasing dynamics of the markets are strong drivers for more dynamic industrial workflows. This development creates vast challenges to the staff that works in these ever changing environments and to the management of workflows and software tools. Apps — programs with a restricted set of functionality, tailored to a specific problem and its solution — are becoming more and more ubiquitous, especially on mobile devices. They are suitable as a building block for interactive systems ready to cope with the new requirements of flexible production processes. This work presents a method for combining specialized apps so that they can be used to fulfill complex business processes. The App-Orchestration approach is a contribution to the field of formal methods for human-computer interaction and to dealing with the new requirements of complex work environments in Industry 4.0 scenarios. The formal modeling language AOF-L which is based on BPMN and the semantic web stack, is presented. It can be employed to model interactive systems comprised of self-contained apps that are connected in a purposeful manner. Additionally, a software framework to model and execute App-Ensembles is implemented. In a user study an industrial maintenance scenario that was built using the developed method is evaluated.

Runge, Jakob. "CARBON a Web application and a RESTful API for argumentation." 2014. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A17195.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis documents the development of Collaborative Argumentation Brought Online (CARBON). Collaborative Argumentation Brought Online (CARBON) aims to make abstract dialectical frameworks (ADFs) available via HTTP by providing a RESTful API and a JavaScript heavy application, that allows to use ADFs in a wiki context on top of that API. The thesis summarizes basic concepts of abstract argumentation using examples of Dung argumentation frameworks (AFs), bipolar argumentation frameworks (BAFs) and abstract dialectical frameworks (ADFs). The advantages of using Haskell as a programming language for server side software are demonstrated by discussing central concepts of functional programming and how these influenced the design or our solutions and simplified the creation of a RESTful API. It is described, how argumentation can be embedded in a wiki, and how a mapping between wiki articles and statements can be established to enable users to create new content while still being able to work with ADFs. To simplify the creation of acceptance conditions, a custom approach to proof standards is presented that allows to translate a bipolar argumentation framework (BAF) with proof standards into a ADF.
