Abstract:
Categorizing books and literature of any genre and subject area is a vital task for publishers which seek to distribute their books to the appropriate audiences. It is common that different countries use different subject categorization schemes, which makes international book trading more difficult due to the need to categorize books from scratch once they reach another country. A solution to this problem has been proposed in the form of an international standard called Thema, which encompasses thousands of hierarchical subject categories. However, because this scheme is quite recent, many books published before its creation are yet to be assigned subject categories. It also is often the case that even recent books are not categorized. In this work, methods for automatic categorization of books are investigated, based on multinomial Naive Bayes and Facebook's classifier fastText. The results show some amount of promise for both classifiers, but overall, due to data imbalance and a very long training time that made it difficult to use more data, it is not possible to determine with certainty which classifier actually is best.

Abstract:
Looking for the best way to publish accessible graphics, this presentation gives some information about how to deal with non-textual contents when adapting documents for DAISY books. It is based on a study conducted by Braillenet for enriching the Helene’s digital library with technical contents. By analysing publishing guidelines, transcribers’ work in specialized centres and main relief printing formats, this work presents thoughts on how to analyse a graphical content, how to produce vectorial images, the main steps for preparing digital image files that could be downloaded and printed, how to index these files into the DAISY book, and finally make them accessible.

An increasing demand for providing accessible content to widely differentiated target groups calls for a universal eBook standard combined with a flexible user interface. For this purpose, we enhanced the current DAISY standard to serve the blind and visually handicapped as well as deaf, hearing impaired, dyslexic and elderly users. In addition to supporting sign language videos and alternatives in simplified language, we introduced videos with media enrichments as a primary source. Additionally a personalizable web player, based on the Adobe Flex Framework, allows real-time streaming and local playback of original and newly developed multimedia DAISY books. Furthermore, the player supports multimodal input such as gesture and speech recognition to facilitate use by physically handicapped people.

Im Vergleich zu Smartphones, Tablets und anderen tragbaren elektronischen Geräten sind E-Book-Reader noch keine Alltagserscheinung. Dies mag erstaunen, schließlich bieten E-Books gerade im Hinblick auf die Mobilität unzweifelhaft Vorteile: Kleine und leichte Geräte bieten Speicherplatz für eine gesamte Bibliothek. Dennoch beträgt der Marktanteil von E-Books in Deutschland bislang weniger als ein Prozent, während in den USA die Verbreitung von E-Books in den letzten Jahren stark zugenommen hat. Auch das deutschsprachige Titel-Angebot ist wesentlich kleiner als in den USA. Viele Leser begegnen digitalen Büchern bislang eher mit Skepsis [1]. (...)

Dem Konstrukteur und Entwickler stehen heute umfangreiche Hilfsmittel zur Lösung von antriebstechnischen Aufgabenstellungen zur Verfügung. Neben zahlreichen MKS-Systemen die zur Auslegung von Antriebslösungen zur Verfügung stehen, eignen sich in den frühen Entwurfsphasen der Mechanismensynthese und –analyse kommerzielle Computeralgebrasysteme wie Mathcad. Um dieses allgemeine Berechnungsprogramm an die eigenen Bedürfnisse anzupassen, kann auf ein so genanntes Elektronisches Handbuch (E-Book) zurückgegriffen werden. Die Erzeugung und Funktionsweise eines solchen E-Books werden in den ersten Kapiteln schrittweise präsentiert. Der Beitrag zeigt im Weiteren, welche Auslegungs- und Berechnungsschritte mit Hilfe einer für Mathcad implementierten und modular aufgebauten Toolbox „MATHTOOL“ sehr effizient bearbeitet werden können. Unter dem Blickwinkel, dass heutige Mechanismen neben einem optimalen kinematischen Aufbau auch ein oder mehrere Aktuatoren besitzen können, sind in dieser Toolbox unterschiedlichste Bausteine für die Synthese, kinematische und kinetostatische Analyse bis hin zur Gestaltung von Antriebsfunktionen zusammengefasst. Die praktische Nutzung des E-Books wird durch eine erweiterbare Beispielsammlung unterstützt. Aufbauend auf den bekannten „Drag & Drop“-Systemfunktionalitäten können die Datenblätter dieser Bibliothek direkt als Vorlage für eigene Projekte dienen und in ein neues Arbeitsblatt mit veränderlichen Eingabeparametern und Modulen übernommen werden. Die Anwendung des E-Books in Lehre und Forschung wird anhand unterschiedlicher Beispiele gezeigt.

Bereits vor zehn Jahren gab es den ersten großen E-Book-Boom. Während damals noch digitale Buchinhalte für spezielle Lesegeräte im Mittelpunkt der Diskussion standen, dominieren inzwischen webbasierte Angebote den stetig wachsenden Markt. Für Bibliotheken eröffnen sich durch diese E-Books der nächsten Generation völlig neue Möglichkeiten in der Informationsversorgung ihrer Benutzer. Sowohl der globale Wissensaustausch, als auch der Zugriff auf Fachinformationen können mit ihrer Hilfe beschleunigt werden. Dies spielt insbesondere für Spezialbibliotheken, wie die der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, eine große Rolle. Denn gerade von ihnen wird erwartet, dass sie die Mitarbeiter ihrer Institute stets mit den aktuellsten Fachinformationen versorgen. Aufgrund der Vielzahl an Lizenzierungs- und Angebotsformen auf dem E-Book-Markt ist hier ein Anbietervergleich unerlässlich. Dieser erfolgt im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit für die Bibliotheken der Max-Planck- Gesellschaft. Hierfür werden zunächst die aktuelle E-Book-Marktsituation und die Strukturen der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft beschrieben. Anschließend untersucht die Verfasserin die bisherigen Entwicklungen in der zentralen und lokalen E-Book-Erwerbung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. Zu diesem Zweck werden u.a. eine Befragung unter den Institutsbibliothekaren und mehrere Experteninterviews durchgeführt. Auf diese Weise können geeignete E-Book-Anbieter für die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft ermittelt und Kriterien gefunden werden, um diese schließlich miteinander vergleichen zu können. Im Ergebnis des Vergleichs gibt die Verfasserin Empfehlungen für die weitere E-Book-Erwerbung in der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft ab.

Unter diesem Motto wurde am 23. Oktober 2009 die Campus-Bibliothek der Universität Leipzig als 24-Stunden-Bibliothek am Augustusplatz feierlich eröffnet. Nach vierjähriger Bauzeit und noch längerer Planung hatte die Bibliothek am 28. September ihren Betrieb aufgenommen. Sie bietet auf 5.000 m2 Platz für 500.000 Bände, vorerst sind wir mit knapp 300.000 Bänden eingezogen. Die Campus-Bibliothek ist Teil des neu rekonstruierten Hörsaalgebäudes und bildet einen wichtigen Meilenstein bei der Errichtung des neuen Universitätscampus im Herzen von Leipzig.

Durch den wiederholten Kontakt mit Büchern in verschiedenen Kontexten werden Handlungsweisen gelernt, Erwartungen gebildet und Bücher in andere Tätigkeiten im Alltag integriert. Anbieter, die Bücher bereitstellen, können sich diese Buchbeziehung zunutze machen, indem sie das Design und die Weiterentwicklung ihrer Angebote auf Erwartungen und Aktivitäten von Buchlesern abstimmen. Das vorliegende Werk stellt als eine Umsetzungshilfe das Konzept der Bereitstellungsqualität von Büchern vor und empfiehlt die Analyse des Kundenverhaltens aus Sicht der Tätigkeitstheorie und der Customer-Dominant Logic. Zur empirischen Prüfung dient die Auswertung von Kundenkommentaren zweier Vermietungsangebote von E-Books.

Abstract:
In November 2008, the National Library of Sweden decided to change their standard classification system from the Swedish Library Classification System (SAB) to the american Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). One of the main reasons to this transition was the assumption of gaining the possibility to exchange and import catalogue posts by using an outspread international classification system. Throughout the years, it has been disputed whether DDC’s treatment of music has been the most suitable. The system has been criticized for being biased in favor of Western music and not being updated with the growth of new music. The purpose of this study is to examine the opinions among librarians connected to the music area on how this classification transition went, and how it has affected their work. The primary questions concerned with this study are if the interviewees perceive that there is a problem by using DDC for music and if so, how? Additionally, does this change also affect the library users, or is it only the librarians? The method I am using to examine these questions is qualitative interviews based on Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkmann’s thoughts in their book Den kvalitativa forskningsintervjun. The theories that will be used for this thesis are theories concerning functional requirements of classification systems. The results show that the interviewees’ opinions are that DDC’s notation tends to be long, which affects the usability of the system. The interviewees’ perception is that DDC is also lacking in its treatment regarding musical recordings and the popular music area. One of the main reasons for this shortage is because there is basically no other library outside of Sweden that is classifying such material with DDC, which means that the information exchange with countries abroad has so far been rather exiguous.

Curricula in concentrated educational systems are prepared from an upper-stream reference and hand over teachers’ disposal. Curricula in Iran are compiled in the so-called math curriculum development office and then put at the disposal of teachers. The researches in this regard show that such plans provide some resistance against executing it which are named teacher - proof programs, even it changed to some extent for accept ion, its execution is suspeciable. This research first explains how math books of middle grade were changed as a result of investigations on TIMSS result in year 1995. These investigation show Iranian Books are weakness in problem solving methods as Polya had said. And so curricula developers in Iran tried to integrate Polya\\\''s method in math books and changed curricula based these frame work. Then, it shows how teachers treated these changes. The finding of analyzing the data has been collected in this research through observations and interviews. It is intended that teachers resist against these changes. Finally according to this research, we suggest a model which we refer if it is used through concentrated educational system, we could expect teachers tolerance against the changes would be decreased and so compiled curricula further matched to executed curricula.

Large scale production of accessible media above and beyond DAISY Talking Books requires management of the workflow from the initial scan to the output of the media production. DAISY Producer was created to help manage this process. It tracks the transformation of hard copy or electronic content to DTBook XML at any stage of the workflow and interfaces to existing order processing systems. Making use of DAISY Pipeline and Liblouis, DAISY Producer fully automates the generation of on-demand, user-specific DAISY Talking Books, Large Print and Braille. This paper introduces DAISY Producer and shows how creators of accessible media can benefit from this open source tool.

Abstract:
The aim of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies is to investigate how the National Library of Sweden collects, arranges and provides access to its collection of printed ephemera. As a comparison, the thesis also looks at how Lund University Library is working with the same tasks. The main sources of information in this thesis comes from participant observations and interviews conducted with informants within the two libraries mentioned above. Document studies of the library’s internal documents and the Swedish Legal Deposit Law has also been used to get additional information. The findings in this thesis has been analyzed with a model based on a practice theory and a knowledge organization theory. The starting point in the investigation was to look at how these two libraries receives printed ephemera through legal deposits, if there are any problems connected to the legal deposits and if that possibly has an influence on the printed ephemera collections. The next part of the investigation focuses on how these collections has been organized with various classification systems over the years. In addition to this the survey wanted to find out if- and in what way these different systems have had an effect on the availability of this material and what tools the libraries uses to make it easier to find specific material within the collections and make it available for users. The results of the investigation show that National Library of Sweden and Lund University Library resave a wide range of material throw legal deposits but not nearly as much as they should get. One big problem is that many producers print their material outside of Sweden and are not aware that they are obligated to give copies of this to the Swedish Legal Deposit Library’s. DAISY has published a Specification for DAISY Protected Digital Talking Book. This paper discusses why such a specification is useful, not only for rightsholders but also for readers with print disabilities. An implementation of PDTB2 is proposed, called dtbprotect. It makes possible to simply produce an encrypted book from a book in DAISY format. It is currently experimented on the Helene Digital Library for the blind. It will be made available open source as to facilitate its implementation by other digital libraries.

In diesem Beitrag wird am Beispiel des Online-Berichtshefts BLok (Online-Berichtsheft zur Stärkung der Lernortkooperation) der Frage nachgegangen, welche Berufsschulen dieses Tool deutschlandweit bereits einsetzen, in welchem Umfang dies geschieht und welche Faktoren dabei einflussgebend sind. Entsprechende quantitative Daten wurden im Rahmen des Projekts DiBBLok nach rund zehn Jahren Praxiseinsatz von BLok erstmalig erhoben. Sie geben Aufschluss über den aktuellen Stand der Strukturdaten in Bezug auf den Standort der Berufsschule, den Umfang an angemeldeten Berufsschulehrenden und Auszubildenden sowie der Verbreitung über die Jahre hinweg. The thesis examines the decoration of Greek bookbinding, through the study of the leather-covered bindings from the monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, Egypt. The manuscript collection is remarkable for the variety of binding styles that represent mainly Greek but also other bookbinding traditions, including Georgian. Syrian and Eastern European. The examination of the decorative motifs tooled on the leather covered bindings aims to identify the style and characteristics of bookbinding at the monastery. Moreover, links between and evidence for specific bindings and the manuscripts they contain are established by grouping them and relating them to specific binders and bookbinding workshops. The workshops of the monastery are examined in parallel with groups of bindings that were imported into the monastery. The extent to which the trade in books and the circulation of binding techniques between the monastery and the west was a reflection of the relations of the monastery with its dependencies is also explored. Rubbings of the approximately 5500 tool impressions on the 1195 decorated bindings have provided the core research material. They have been identified, classified and organized into a descriptive electronic database. Imaging techniques have been developed to compare the scanned impressions, which permitted the identification of impressions of the same finishing tools. Based on the identity of their decorative tools and on the process of comparison of their structural features, a number of the bindings have been ascribed to a total of 70 specific workshops, whose dates and origins are explored. 16 of these workshops - nine from the monastery of St Catherine and seven from elsewhere, which produced bindings imported to the monastery, are discussed analytically. In addition to that, 40 original bookbinding finishing tools were discovered at the monastery during this research, which have provided invaluable material for our understanding of the tooling methods and particularities of decorated book covers at the monastery. The largest corpus of finishing tools used on Greek bindings to date has been compiled to provide a reference tool which will aid future research on Greek bookbinding. Der folgende Vortrag gibt eine kurze Einführung in Google Books und das Google Book Settlement, den Reaktionen der VG Wort und dem Aktionsbündnis für „Urheberrecht in Bildung und Wissenschaft“ sowie dem Open-Access-Prinzip. Anhand von Befürworterstimmen des Heidelberger Appells aus der Presse werden die dortigen Kernaussagen „Open Access sei kostenlos“, „Open Access sei von schlechter Qualität“ und „Open Access würde die Autor/innen ihrer Urheberrechte berauben“ diskutiert und die Undifferenziertheit dieser Aussagen aufgezeigt.

In 2012, The Institute of Resource Ecology at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf organized the first international workshop of Advanced Techniques in Actinide Spectroscopy (ATAS). A very positive feedback and the wish for a continuation of the workshop were communicated from several participants to the scientific committee during the workshop and beyond. Today, the ATAS workshop has been obviously established as an international forum for the exchange of progress and new experiences on advanced spectroscopic techniques for international actinide and lanthanide research. In comparison to already established workshops and conferences on the field of radioecology, one main focus of ATAS is to generate synergistic effects and to improve the scientific discussion between spectroscopic experimentalists and theoreticians. The exchange of ideas in particular between experimental and theoretical applications in spectroscopy and the presentation of new analytical techniques are of special interest for many research institutions working on the improvement of transport models of toxic elements in the environment and the food chain as well as on reprocessing technologies of nuclear and non-nuclear waste. Spectroscopic studies in combination with theoretical modelling comprise the exploration of molecular mechanisms of complexation processes in aqueous or organic phases and of sorption reactions of the contaminants on mineral surfaces to obtain better process understanding on a molecular level. As a consequence, predictions of contaminant’s migration behaviour will become more reliable and precise. This can improve the monitoring and removal of hazardous elements from the environment and hence, will assist strategies for remediation technologies and risk assessment. Particular emphasis is placed on the results of the first inter-laboratory Round-Robin test on actinide spectroscopy (RRT). The main goal of RRT is the comprehensive molecular analysis of the actinide complex system U(VI)/acetate in aqueous solution independently investigated by different spectroscopic and quantum chemical methods applied by leading laboratories in geochemical research. Conformities as well as sources of discrepancies between the results of the different methods are to be evaluated, illuminating the potentials and limitations of cou-pling different spectroscopic and theoretical ap-proaches as tools for the comprehensive study of actinide molecule complexes. The test is understood to stimulate scientific discussions, but not as a competitive exercise between the labs of the community. Hopefully, the second ATAS workshop will continue to bundle and strengthen respective research activities and ideally act as a nucleus for an international network, closely collaborating with international partners. I am confident that the workshop will deliver many exciting ideas, promote scientific discussions, stimulate new developments and collaborations and in such a way be prosperous. This workshop would not take place without the kind support of the HZDR administration which is gratefully acknowledged. Finally, the or-ganizers cordially thank all public and private sponsors for generous funding which makes this meeting come true for scientists working on the heavy metal research field.

In October 2008 Argon published the first DAISY audio books: 20 bestsellers from the publisher of audio books were “DAISYfied”. At present 10–15 DAISY titles are released per month, which are obtainable at the booksellers. The DAISY books can be classified as type two books; they combine textual headings and audio content. The accompanying booklet is recorded as well and is added as audio content. To distinguish DAISY audio books from audio books on audio CD, the former are packaged in a keep case with a label in Braille. According to Argon’s programme profile the titles of the DAISY edition cover all kinds of genres from literature, entertainment, crime fiction and children‘s books to non-fiction.
