In several natural language tasks, labeled sequences are available in separate domains (say, languages), but the goal is to label sequences with mixed domain (such as code-switched text). Or, we may have available models for labeling whole passages (say, with sentiments), which we would like to exploit toward better position-specific label inference (say, target-dependent sentiment annotation). A key characteristic shared across such tasks is that different positions in a primary instance can benefit from different ‘experts’ trained from auxiliary data, but labeled primary instances are scarce

AbstractIn addition to inflecting adjectives for case, number, and gender, the early Germanic languages inflect adjectives as either strong or weak. Scholarly consensus is lacking regarding what triggers this fourth inflectional category, i.e. why an adjective surfaces as either strong or weak. While the traditional school of thought held that weak adjectives surface with definite determiners, some recent scholarship has argued that a semantic force such as definiteness or classification is responsible. The principal objective of the knot theory is to provide a simple way of classifying and ordering all the knot types. Here, we propose a natural classification of knots based on their intrinsic position in the knot space that is defined by the set of knots to which a given knot can be converted by individual intersegmental passages. In addition, we characterize various knots using a set of simple quantum numbers that can be determined upon inspection of minimal crossing diagram of a knot. In this chapter, an initiative is proposed where natural language processing (NLP) techniques and supervised machine learning algorithms have been combined to detect external plagiarism. The major emphasis is on to construct a framework to detect plagiarism from monolingual texts by implementing n-gram frequency comparison approach. The framework is based on 120 characteristics which have been extracted during pre-processing steps using simple NLP approach. Afterward, filter metrics has been applied to select most relevant features and supervised classification learning algorithm has been used later to classify the documents in four levels of plagiarism. Then, confusion matrix was built to estimate the false positives and false negatives. Finally, the authors have shown C4.5 decision tree-based classifier's suitability on calculating accuracy over naive Bayes. The framework achieved 89% accuracy with low false positive and false negative rate and it shows higher precision and recall value comparing to passage similarities method, sentence similarity method, and search space reduction method.

Full text
Abstract:
Communities of practice have been in existence since the days when individual craftsmen got together to share ideas and issues. Eventually, these developed into craft guilds and finally into professional associations. But more specifically, focused communities of practice have recently begun to attract a great deal of attention in the business community because they provide a way for strategically growing and managing knowledge as an asset (Grant, 1996; Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995; Powell, 1998). The increasing complexity in products, services, and processes requires more specialization and collaboration between workers. However, orchestrating the involvement of disparate groups that work on complex projects requires finding a balance between differentiation, when teams work separately, and integration, when groups meet to exchange knowledge. For example, development projects usually benefit when expertise is drawn from diverse sources, including potential users, where the interests, skills, and formal and tacit knowledge of the different groups can be drawn together by skillful project managers (Garrety, Robertson & Badham, 2004). By responding to new economic pressures for rapid transformation, communities of practice can help improve knowledge exchange in critical areas, so organizations can maintain or improve their competitive positions. The growth of interest in communities of practice has resulted in their spread into several classifications of modern organizations, all of which must share knowledge and learning to thrive. How effectively communities of practice perform in these different environments is of great interest, and, in order to study them in detail, we suggest classifying them according to the structure of the organizations they serve. We have been able to identity four such classifications: internal communities of practice, communities of practice in network organizations, formal networks of practice, and self-organizing networks of practice. Among these four classifications are characteristics of particular interest, especially when successful practices exhibited in one classification can be replicated in others. This article outlines the characteristics of each classification, explores their differences and similarities, and summarizes the findings from a review of the literature. The objective of this article is to encourage the migration of successful ideas for knowledge transfer and learning among the different classifications.

Abstract:
This essay attempts to evidence the remaining echoes of the reception of Mendeleev’s periodic classification in Portugal during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The research involved the identification of remaining traces at different higher-level teaching institutions as well as with books, textbooks, and programs from beginner’s level to advanced level that appeared in the period between 1876 and 1904. Following the institutionalization of chemistry as an independent scientific discipline in Portugal, after the 1772 reform of Coimbra University, the 1844 reform of the university serves as a breath of fresh air in terms of the study of chemistry as being split into different chemistry specialties, an action much related to developments abroad. By 1851 the Coimbra professor J. A. Simões de Carvalho (1822–1902) was opposing chemistry being taught at the university with French textbooks. Instead, he wrote a modernized text, which included recent research for chemical philosophy lessons and advocated a much greater “attention to the day-to-day communications in scientific journals and newsletters than to more complete and extensive manuals.” In the two decades immediately before the period we are interested in, there was a resurgence of the country’s economy and some developments also affected the still unique university. In this context, reform of curricula took place and a positivist wind blew through the faculties, starting in the Law Faculty and then spreading to the other faculties with a symptomatic decline in the influence of the Canonical Faculty. The Law Faculty had the biggest number of students and several of its members took up higher administrative or governmental positions. The intellectual atmosphere of the Faculty of Natural Philosophy was deeply impregnated with positivism, whereby it was intended to regenerate the sciences body. The program of sending some of its members abroad was reactivated, to keep them up to date with the modern experimental sciences, particularly chemistry, while some foreign staff came to work in the university.

The main contribution of this chapter is the study of the generation and management knowledge, emphasizing the social aspects, from an area of the Logistic Model Based on Positions (LoMoBaP). The area to use is the Inverse logistics, which is integrated for the Reverse logistics manager, the Compilation and Reception manager and the Classification and use manager. The analysis will be done via dynamic knowledge, studying the upward spiral of knowledge creation, tacit to explicit to tacit. To do this will be constructed tables where the functions of these three positions will be identified and will be discussed, as these functions are involved in the process of management and generation of knowledge, following the processes of Socialization, Externalization, Combination and Internalization, simultaneously that are located in the Ba and knowledge assets are analyzed: Experimental, Conceptual Systemic and Routine Knowledge.

Abstract:
There has been considerable philosophical literature on the nature of health, which is briefly reviewed in this chapter. A distinction is drawn between two dimensions of disagreement in that literature: the objectivity dimension and the normativity dimension. With these distinctions in play, the positions traditionally considered poles of the debate, naturalism and normativism, are seen as diagonal opposites on a 2×2 matrix of possible positions, being Value-Independent Realism and Value-Dependent Anti-Realism respectively. Further support for this classification comes from a position in the bioethical literature, overlooked by philosophers of medicine, called Value-Dependent Realism (developed by Stempsey). The fourth quadrant, Value-Independent Anti-Realism, is unexplored, and the chapter proposes a theory of health in this quadrant, by arguing that health is a secondary property, akin to color, or possibly causation. This view is used to ground an evolutionary account of the health concept (quite distinct from previous evolutionary accounts of natural function).

Geographers and social scientists have long been interested in ranking and classifying the cities of the world. The cutting edge of this research is characterized by a recognition of the crucial importance of information and, specifically, ICTs to cities’ positions in the current Knowledge Economy. This chapter builds on recent “cyberspace” analyses of the global urban system by arguing for, and demonstrating empirically, the value of Web search engine data as a means of understanding cities as situated within, and constituted by, flows of digital information. To this end, the authors show how the Google search engine can be used to specify a dynamic, informational classification of North American cities based on both the production and the consumption of Web information about two prominent current issues global in scope: the global financial crisis, and global climate change.

Abstract:
Deep learning models expect a reasonable amount of training instances to improve prediction quality. Moreover, in classification problems, the occurrence of an unbalanced distribution may lead to a biased model. In this paper, we investigate the problem of species classification from plant images, where some species have very few image samples. We explore reduced versions of imagenet Neural Network winners architecture to filter the space of candidate matches, under a target accuracy level. We show through experimental results using real unbalanced plant image datasets that our approach can le
