In several natural language tasks, labeled sequences are available in separate domains (say, languages), but the goal is to label sequences with mixed domain (such as code-switched text). Or, we may have available models for labeling whole passages (say, with sentiments), which we would like to exploit toward better position-specific label inference (say, target-dependent sentiment annotation). A key characteristic shared across such tasks is that different positions in a primary instance can benefit from different ‘experts’ trained from auxiliary data, but labeled primary instances are scarce

AbstractIn addition to inflecting adjectives for case, number, and gender, the early Germanic languages inflect adjectives as either strong or weak. Scholarly consensus is lacking regarding what triggers this fourth inflectional category, i.e. why an adjective surfaces as either strong or weak. While the traditional school of thought held that weak adjectives surface with definite determiners, some recent scholarship has argued that a semantic force such as definiteness or classification is responsible. The principal objective of the knot theory is to provide a simple way of classifying and ordering all the knot types. In addition, we characterize various knots using a set of simple quantum numbers that can be determined upon inspection of minimal crossing diagram of a knot. Abstract:
A new shape descriptor, the high order statistical pattern spectrum (HSP), able to extract from real images a set of descriptive features which can be used to classify objects regardless of their positions, sizes, orientations and the presence of noise, has been developed. The HSP is an internal, noise-robust, noninformation-preserving operator which combines the properties of invariance of the high order pattern spectrum and the properties of noise robustness of the statistical pattern spectrum. A neural network trained by a back-propagation algorithm has been used to test the method on diffe

Recently, hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has attracted increasing attention in the remote sensing field. Plenty of CNN-based methods with diverse attention mechanisms (AMs) have been proposed for HSI classification due to AMs being able to improve the quality of feature representations. However, some of the previous AMs squeeze global spatial or channel information directly by pooling operations to yield feature descriptors, which inadequately utilize global contextual information. Besides, some AMs cannot exploit the interactions among channels or positions with the aid of nonlinear

A system for the classification of real 3-D objects is presented. Ten objects are presented in arbitrary orientation (and position, within limits). The perception of an object is achieved by the use of multiple stereo pairs of images taken from different view positions. Classification of the spectrum of distances between edge-points perceived on an object is achieved using a constructive algorithm. Convergence to zero errors on the set of training examples is guaranteed. The generalization capability is tested on a set of 10–15 novel presentations of each object.

Lifting and carrying heavy objects is a major aspect of physically intensive jobs. Wearable sensors have previously been used to classify different ways of picking up an object, but have seen only limited use for automatic classification of load position and weight while a person is walking and carrying an object. In this proof-of-concept study, we thus used wearable inertial and electromyographic sensors for offline classification of different load positions (frontal vs. unilateral vs. bilateral side loads) and weights during gait. Ten participants performed 19 different carrying trials each

This work presents a method for lexical tone classification in audio-visual speech. The method is applied to a speech data set consisting of syllables and words produced by a female native speaker of Cantonese. The data were recorded in an audio-visual speech production experiment. The visual component of speech was measured by tracking the positions of active markers placed on the speaker's face, whereas the acoustic component was measured with an ordinary microphone. A pitch tracking algorithm is used to estimate F0 from the acoustic signal. A procedure for head motion compensation is applie

Abstract:
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are formed by joining the 3′ and 5′ ends of RNA molecules. Identification of circRNAs is an important part of circRNA research. The circRNA prediction methods can predict the circRNAs with start and end positions in the chromosome but cannot identify the full-length circRNA sequences. We present an R package FcircSEC (Full Length circRNA Sequence Extraction and Classification) to extract the full-length circRNA sequences based on gene annotation and the output of any circRNA prediction tools whose output has a chromosome, start and end positions, and a strand for each

In an inverse acoustic problem with nearfield sources, it is important to separate multiple acoustic sources and to measure the position of each target. This paper proposes a new algorithm by applying multiple signal classification (MUSIC) to the outputs of discrete wavelet transformation with subband selection based on the entropy threshold. Some numerical experiments show that the proposed method can estimate the more precise positions than a conventional MUSIC algorithm under moderately correlated signal and relatively low signal-to-noise ratio case.

Abstract:
This study explores formal criteria for the classification of adverbs in French. Distributional analysis tests whether adverbs appear in particular morpho-syntactic contexts, including syntactic constructions. It analyses combinations of adverbs, and their relative order in particular syntactic contexts. Finally it tests whether using adverbs in these positions imposes prosodic restrictions. These criteria result in a classification which is compatible with those found in major studies on this topic.
