Abstract:
Introduction: the proposed article is the systematization of types of verb conjugation in the Karelian language based on the Livvi and Ludic dialects, as well as an analysis of the classification of verb types in closely related Karelian languages (Finnish and Vepsian). Objective: to consider the classification of types of lexical stems and conjugation of verbs in the Livvi and Ludic dialects and offer the extended classification based on the experience of other related languages. Research materials: data from dictionaries, grammars and the dialect corpora of the Karelian language. Results and novelty of the research: the article describes the verb’s types of stems and conjugation in the Karelian language in a comparative aspect with closely related languages (Finnish and Vepsian languages), identifies the differences and common features in the types of verbs. Based on the studied material, the classification is proposed for the types of verbs in the Livvi and Ludic dialects of the Karelian language. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that we proposed to introduce into linguistic usage the classification of verbs’ stems, which is closely related to the types of verb conjugation in the Livvi and Ludic dialects of the Karelian language, based on systematized information about the typologies of one and two-stem verbs in the Karelian language.

Abstract:
In this paper, I compare the semantic structure of the Hungarian and Udmurt verbs of motion. I state that, contrary to the general opinion of the typological literature, the semantic structure of Finno-Ugric verbs is not only Motion + Mode (Motion + Co-event). In Udmurt and in the old Hungarian language there are many motion verbs with the pattern Movement + PATH. Today, PATH is encoded differently in Udmurt and Hungarian movement verbs from a typological point of view. Probably the following happened: when the Hungarian verb system was consolidated, PATH was coded with the preverb, and verb-framed motion verbs became satellite-framed motion verbs. This hypothesis requires further research.

Abstract:
The goal of this work consists in formulation of definition and classification of phrasal verbs in the English language. The subject of this research is the semantics of English phrasal verbs. Lexicographical analysis became the main method for this research. The author also carried out semantic and comparative analysis of English and Russian prefixed verbs; examines the peculiarities of distribution of pitch accents between “simple” verb and postposition as one of the determinant attributes that allows classifying phrasal verbs into an independent lexical group. It is demonstrated that some word combinations, which are traditionally considered phrasal verbs, should not be attributed to this category of lexical units. The author determines the attributes that allow unifying interpretation of the term “phrasal verb”. The scientific novelty consists in the new perspective upon classification of phrasal verbs, distinguishing three types of these lexical units based on the logic of their formation. The author underlines that all phrasal verbs are amenable to the proposed classification, excluding the cases when the status of second element within them does not deem it as postposition. The acquired results significantly simplify the understanding of such verbs and can be applied in teaching or further theoretical developments of the subject of phrasal verbs.

Semantic description of French denominal verbs enXerThis article presents a semantic description of French denominal verbs, such as EMBARQUER, EMPOISONNER, ENDIMANCHER and ENDEUILLER. Traditionally described as parasynthetic compounds, these verbs are the result of a special type of word formation, consisting in the affixation of a prefix and suffix to a stem. Our purpose is to deal with a semantic description of this particular verb class, based on the referential and cognitive nature of de noun stem. It will be shown that the semantic classification outlined by Fradin (2003) in verbes en-SITE (EMBARQUER, ENFOURNER, ENGLUER) and V-cibles (ENCOLLER, ENFLEURER, ENGLUER), based on the cognitive figure-ground opposition is not general enough. The thesis defended here is that denominal verbes enXer instantiate a transformational process of a more abstract topological kind.

Based on the lexicalization patterns presented in Talmy’s pioneering work (1985), motion verbs classifications for Spanish mainly recognize two groups: verbs of manner and verbs of direction (Lamiroy, 1991; Cifuentes Honrubia, 1988-1989; Crego García, 2000; Morimoto, 2001, among others). This research offers a much more detailed classification, by means of the use of a finer set of features and semantic participants that may be lexicalized by motion verbs in any language of the world, namely: the aspectual features of punctuality and telicity; the participants theme, source, path, goal, point of reference, location-path and trajectory; and the parametric features of displacement, movement, manner, change of place and direction. The result is a classification of eight different verb groups that account for the lexical and syntactic mechanisms present in the encoding of the Spanish motion events.

Light verb constructions (LVCs) are verb-noun constructions in which the noun carries the semantic meaning and the verb is semantically reduced, when compared with its main meaning, for example, atlikti analizę (‘to perform an analysis’). LVCs in Lithuanian have not been addressed much so far. The analysis of Lithuanian LVCs was carried out as a part of the PARSEME project on verbal identification of multiword expressions (MWE). This paper aims at presenting some initial findings on the identification of LVCs in Lithuanian, based on the 1st edition of the PARSEME shared-task results (2017). We describe the identification process according to the semantic and syntactic features of LVCs (PARSEME guidelines 1.0 2017) and discuss the grammatical features of the identified Lithuanian LVCs. LVCs seem to be less frequent in Lithuanian than in other languages: they make up about 0.2% (215 instances) of the analysed 200,000 token corpus. Based on the number of different LVCs, there seem to be two groups of verbs functioning as light verbs: a relatively small group of common light verbs used in the most prototypical examples of Lithuanian LVCs (e.g., vykdyti ‘to perform’, atlikti ‘to perform’, daryti ‘to do’, and turėti ‘to have’) and a larger group of less common light verbs. Most of the nouns in analysed LVCs have suffixes -imas and -ymas, which are the most typical Lithuanian suffixes for deriving a noun from a verb. Almost 40% of all LVCs are used with 1–3 words intervening between a verb and a noun.

Abstract:
Aspectual classification maps verbs to a small set of primitive categories in order to reason about time. This classification is necessary for interpreting temporal modifiers and assessing temporal relationships, and is therefore a required component for many natural language applications. A verb's aspectual category can be predicted by co-occurrence frequencies between the verb and certain linguistic modifiers. These frequency measures, called linguistic indicators, are chosen by linguistic insights. However, linguistic indicators used in isolation are predictively incomplete, and are therefore insufficient when used individually. In this article, we compare three supervised machine learning methods for combining multiple linguistic indicators for aspectual classification: decision trees, genetic programming, and logistic regression. A set of 14 indicators are combined for classification according to two aspectual distinctions. This approach improves the classification performance for both distinctions, as evaluated over unrestricted sets of verbs occurring across two corpora. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the linguistic indicators and provides a much-needed full-scale method for automatic aspectual classification. Moreover, the models resulting from learning reveal several linguistic insights that are relevant to aspectual classification. We also compare supervised learning methods with an unsupervised method for this task.

Abstract This paper discusses the classification of verbal constructions in Malto based on functions expressed through the co-occurrence of verb words at various levels within clauses. Multi-verb constructions in Malto are discussed within the framework of the theories of juncture and nexus proposed by Van Valin, Robert D, and Randy J LaPolla. 1997. Syntax: Structure, Meaning and Function. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. The functional classes of multi-verb constructions in Malto discussed in this paper include explicator compound verbs, conjunctive participle constructions, and reduplicated verbs. Rank-defining properties where the inflectional properties relate to the concept of finiteness in verbs are compared with rank shift in Malto. This includes several possibilities such as two clauses coalescing into a single core, category change where nominals are derived from verbs by attaching a nominaliser, or verbs functioning as adverbials by virtue of their position relative to a finite verb.

The classification of verbs in Levin's (1993) English Verb Classes and Alternations: A preliminary Investigation, on the basis of both intuitive semantic grouping and their participation in valence alternations, is often used by the NLP community as evidence of the semantic similarity of verbs (Jing & McKeown 1998; Lapata & Brew 1999; Kohl et al. 1998). In this paper, we compare the Levin classification with the work of the FrameNet project (Fillmore & Baker 2001), where words (not just verbs) are grouped according to the conceptual structures (frames) that underlie them and their combinatorial patterns are inductively derived from corpus evidence. This means that verbs grouped together in FrameNet (FN) might be semantically similar but have different (or no) alternations, and that verbs which share the same alternation might be represented in two different semantic frames.

This paper describes an approach to detect the organization of semantic subclasses of Japanese verbs. First, we classify verbs along two dimensions: thematic and aspectual. In the thematic dimension, we exploit the pattern of case marking particles which are attached to arguments of verbs. In the aspectual dimension, we exploit the classification of adverbs which modify verbs in a corpus. By combining the results of two classifications, we obtain an elaborate classification of verbs. We can incorporate the prototypicality of the members which constitute each semantic subclass by taking account of the frequency of case particles patterns and cooccurring adverbs. Moreover, the existence of close relationships among them enable us to detect the organization of these subclasses.

Ce travail propose une classification universelle des verbes de « pensée ». Il présente également une étude analytique comparative de ce groupe de verbes dans plusieurs langues. Les différences entre les approches classificatrices spécifiques de chaque langue rendent la mission de catégorisation universelle d’une certaine complexité. C’est pourquoi nous nous sommes orientés dans ce travail vers l’exploration de toutes les spécificités de ces verbes en arabe et en français. Nous entamons cette recherche avec un essai de définition de ce que peut représenter un verbe de pensée. Ensuite nous proposons un répertoire de verbes représentatif de toutes les sous-catégories étudiées. Le dictionnaire et l’analyse des données qu’il fournit feront le sujet de notre deuxième partie. Quant à la troisième partie, elle s’appuie sur une analyse sémantico-cognitive de ces verbes. La quatrième et dernière partie présente l’analyse de ces verbes une fois repérés dans le corpus parallèle aligné bilingue
This work proposes a universal classification of verbs of "thought". It also presents a comparative analytical study of this group of verbs in several languages. The differences between the approaches specific classifications of each language make the task of universal categorization more complex. That's why we're facing in this work to the exploration of all the specifics of these verbs in Arabic and French. We begin this research with an attempt to define what can be a verb of thinking. Then we offer a directory of verbs representing all sub-categories studied. The dictionary and the analysis of the data submitted will be the subject of our second game. The third part, it relies on cognitive-semantic analysis of these verbs. The fourth and final section presents the analysis of these verbs when identified in the aligned bilingual parallel corpus

Le présent article se donne pour objectif d’examiner de façon critique les études précédentes sur le passif en Hawsa et de proposer, dans le cadre de lan théorie de l’énonciation de Antoine Culioli, une nouvelle approche. Le passif en Hawsa morphologiquement très simple offre une diversité complexe sur le plan sémantique. Cette complexité de signification ne peut être démêlée et appréhendée que par une approche transcatégorielle qui associe les différents types de procès, l’aspect et le passif dans leur interrelation nécessaire. Cette démarche a d’abord mis en évidence l’impossibilité de dériver le passif de l’actif. En second lieu, elle a permis de distinguer les types de passifs suivants : passif potentiel qui résulte de la combinaison du passif et de l’inaccompli, le passif résultatif obtenu avec l’accompli et qui se subdivise en passif conatif quand le verbe est discret et en passif qualitatif en haut degré avec les verbes denses. En fin, elle a permis de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement de certains verbes qui semblent avoir un comportement à priori singulier y compris le fonctionnement du passif dit « dégénéré » qui s’explique par le double rôle d’agent et d’agi du sujet grammatical.

Dans la premiere partie, nous avons tente deprouver que la description semantique doit etre menee sans l'adoption de contraintes tel que le principle de la pertinence syntaxique ou celui de la correlation. Nous avons egalement juge non pertinente la generalisation de la structure d'une classe semantique particuliere aux autres champs semantiques. Aussi, avons-nous propose, dans la deuxieme partie, d'etablir des classes semantiques homogenes en decomposant la signification des verbes en des elements atomiques. Toutefois, cette option n'est pas suffisante dans la mesure ou nous avons a distinguer les elements requis par la signification du verbe des autres qui sont en rapport avec toute la proposition. Ceci explique pourquoi nous avons introduit, dans la troisieme partie, la theorie de la valence pour distinguer les deux notions d'actant et de circonstant
The aim of this thesis is to show that it is possible to elaborate a semantic theory which accounts for the semantic structures of verbal predicates. In the first part, we have tried to prove that the semantic description must be led without adopting some constraints such as the principle of syntactic relevance or that of correlation. We have also judged irrelevant the generalization of the structure of a particular semantic class to the other semantic fields. So, we have proposed, in the second part, to establish some homgeneous semantic classes by decomposing the meaning of verbs into atomic elements. But this option is not sufficient in so far as we have to distinguish elements that are required by the meaning of the verb from those which are pertaining to all the clause. This explains why we have introduced, in the third part, the theory of valency in order to distinguish the two notions of "actant" and "circonstant"

Cette recherche vise la description et l’explication des différentes classifications concernant le verbe russe, partie du discours la plus vaste et la plus difficile à organiser dans cette langue, de par ses nombreuses catégories et un système compliqué de conjugaison, ce qui a pour conséquence une multiplicité de propositions, au cours des siècles, tentant de maîtriser cette complexité. Ces tentatives diffèrent selon les idées dominantes de l’époque : par le choix de l’objet (slavon, vieux russe…), le point de vue jugé pertinent (diachronique, synchronique, logique…), le critère linguistique adopté (morphologique, sémantique…) et donc par les méthodologies dépendant de ces options théoriques, chacune révélant des faits nouveaux (telle la découverte de l’aspect) mais du même coup une complication supplémentaire pour le classement, et donc des difficultés accrues dans l'acquisition ou l'apprentissage du système verbal russe. Notre objectif est double : saisir pourquoi les classifications existantes aboutissent à des modèles trop complexes pour être enseignés tels quels, et déterminer le point de vue à adopter pour pallier le problème pédagogique : notre hypothèse est d’intégrer le critère de la fréquence (jamais pris en compte jusqu’ici)
This research concerns the description and explanation of various classifications of Russian verbs, which constitute the largest and most difficult-to-organise part of speech in the Russian language due to the numerous categories and the complicated system of conjugation which have led, over the centuries, to numerous propositions attempting to master this complexity. These attempts differ, according to the dominant ideas of each epoch: in the choice of the objective (Slavonic, Old Russian...), the viewpoint judged pertinent (diachronical, synchronical, logical...), the linguistic criterion adopted (morphological, semantic...) and therefore by the methodologies dependant on these theoretical options, each one revealing new facts (such as the discovery of the aspects), but at the same time becoming an extra complication for a classification and therefore adding more difficulties for acquiring or learning the Russian verb system. Ours is a double objective : to grasp why the existing classifications lead to models that are too complex to be taught as is, and to determine the proper viewpoint from which to remedy the pedagogical problem (which has never been taken into account so far)

Ce travail a pour modèle théorique le lexique-grammaire, qui a été élaboré par M. Gross (1975), sur la base des principes de Z. S. Harris (1968). Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné les propriétés syntaxico-sémantiques des 3000 verbes demandant ce complément et nous les avons regroupés en 8 classes. Ces propriétés constitueront des informations syntaxiques qui servent à l'analyse de structure d'une phrase et au traitement automatique des textes en coréen.

Ziel des Beitrags ist die Relevanz der Kategorie Kontrollfeld aus der funktionalen Pragmatik für volitive Modalverben des Portugiesischen aufzuzeigen, und zwar sowohl in der Konstruktion mit einem Infinitiv als auch der mit einem durch de Subjunktor que eingeleiteten Komplementsatz bei gleichzeitiger Koreferenz von Subjekt des Modalverbs und des Verbs des untergeordneten Komplementsatzes. Dabei wird aufgezeigt, das es eine transtheoretische Konvergenz zwischen der funktionalen Pragmatik und der kognitiven Linguistik im Hinblick auf das Phänomen gibt. Außerdem wird aufgezeigt, dass die Koreferenz zwischen Subjekt des Modalverbs und des Verbs des Komplementsatzes bei portugiesischen volitiven Modalverben möglich ist, wenn das Subjekt keine Kontrolle über den durch das Verb des Komplementsatzes bezeichneten Sachverhalt hat.
