Abstract:

Abstract:
Study of the achievement of an ill-know dynasty of French painters from the 17th and 18th centuries: the Hallés. Biography. Catalogue raisonné: paintings, drawings, engravings. Documents. Archives. Bibliography. Daniel, the first of the family (Rouen, 1614 - Paris, 1675), painter in Rouen, settles in Paris where he wins some fame through religious paintings, few of which are still existant. Claude-Guy, his son (Paris, 1652-1736), is a gifted painter, draughtsman and well-known illustrator. He was elected member, then rector of the Royal French Academy of painting and sculpting. He works mainly for the Church and the religious orders; most of his paintings have disappeared diring the French Revolution. He is representative of the art of painting between the end of the Grand siècle and the Roccoco. The most reknowned member of the family is his son, Noël (Paris, 1711-1781), member, treasurer and rector of the Royal Academy, overseer of the Gobelins manufactory. He works for the King, the Church, and adorns private mansions with ceilings, dessus de porte and easel paintings. He is one of the most gifted French painters of the Eighteenth century. His talent is actually being re-discovered

Abstract:
Casting fresh light on one of the most important movements in film history, Intermedial Dialogues: The French New Wave and the Other Arts is the first comprehensive study of the New Wave's relationship with the older arts. Traversing the fields of literature, theatre, painting, architecture and photography, and drawing on André Bazin alongside recent theories of intermediality, it investigates the 'impure', intermedial aesthetics of New Wave cinema. Filmmakers under discussion include critics-turned-directors François Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette and Claude Chabrol, members of the Left Bank Group Alain Resnais, AgnèsVarda and Chris Marker, but also lesser-known directors, notably the 'secret child of the New Wave', Guy Gilles. This wide-ranging book offers an original reading of the complex, often ambivalent ways in which the New Wave engages the other arts in both its discursive construction and filmic practice.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the problematic social construction of crime, law enforcement, and jurisprudence and highlights some of the consequences of these media portrayals for the public and students of this topic. It then sets out an ethic of phenomenological reduction of crime and the incumbent legal processes as a solution. The chapter draws upon the work of Jean-Luc Marion, Claude Romano, Werner Marx, James Mensch, and Immanuel Levinas, to describe how reducing the complex experience of crime, law enforcement, and jurisprudence opens new understanding and new potential for exploring the very complex nature of crime and the resulting legal processes. The reduction, in this case, entails an ethical argument to reduce what is given to those experiencing these processes and to us as observers. In the case of the one accused of crime, a reduction of their experience often breaks our understanding free of the “good-guy, bad-guy” portrayals in media. Likewise, a reduction of the experience and activity of law-enforcement and jurisprudence professionals highlights their professional, personal, and interpersonal complexities as they do their jobs. Finally, it proposes that this phenomenological ethic, when taken up by the media, would actually not only increase the portrayals of these processes in a more authentic manner, but increase the potential for sharing the dramatic stories of the criminal, law-enforcement, and legal professionals. This would serve to further their agenda of telling marketable and engaging stories by highlighting the incredible personal and interpersonal complexities of the people caught up in these experiences.
