The philosophy he announced (cut short by his death during World War II) was to be a study of the generativity of conceptual structures, as opposed to a phenomenology of knowledge. Abstract:
The origin of turtles is one of the most contentious issues in systematics with three currently viable hypotheses: turtles as the extant sister to (i) the crocodile–bird clade, (ii) the lizard–tuatara clade, or (iii) Diapsida (a clade composed of (i) and (ii)). We reanalysed a recent dataset that allied turtles with the lizard–tuatara clade and found that the inclusion of the stem turtle Proganochelys quenstedti and the ‘parareptile’ Eunotosaurus africanus results in a single overriding morphological signal, with turtles outside Diapsida. This result reflects the importance of transitional fos

Hepatitis C virus genotype 1a (HCV-1a) comprises clades I and II. The Q80K polymorphism is found predominantly in clade I but rarely in clade II. Here, we investigated whether natural polymorphisms in HCV-1a clade II entailed structural protein changes when occurrence of the Q80K variant was simulated. Based on HCV-1a clade I and II protein sequences, the structure of the HCV-1a Q80K mutant NS3-4A was obtained by comparative modeling. Its physicochemical properties were studied by molecular dynamics simulations and network analysis. Results demonstrate that, in the presence of the K80 variant,

ABSTRACT DNA sequence-based molecular subtyping methods such as multilocus sequence typing (MLST) are commonly used to generate phylogenetic inferences for monomorphic pathogens. The development of an effective MLST scheme for subtyping Escherichia coli O157:H7 has been hindered in the past due to the lack of sequence variation found within analyzed housekeeping and virulence genes. A recent study suggested that rhs genes are under strong positive selection pressure, and therefore in this study we analyzed these genes within a diverse collection of E. coli O157:H7 strains for sequence variabil

Claude Levi-Strauss mentioned several times in his work that the notion of transformation is the keystone of the structural analysis he pratices. By his own admission, this notion stems from his reading of D’Arcy Thomson’s book On Growth and Form during World War II in the United States. But Levi-Strauss makes use of two very different meanings of transformation, relating to two distinct morpho-genetic traditions. On the one hand, he is inspired by Goethe’s Morphology. All forms can be seen as transformation of a Urform, an original form, from which they grow out like a tree. But on the other

Abstract Background Increasing antimicrobial resistance (R) among Escherichia coli (EC) isolates can be associated with the expansion of the pandemic sequence type (ST) 131 that harbors virulence factors and causes more severe infections when compared with other antimicrobial-R EC. We evaluated the core genome MLST (cgMLST) profiles and R genes using the bioinformatics tool 1928D to evaluate the epidemiology of a global ST131 EC collection and unrelated STs. Methods A total of 259 EC clinical isolates belonging to ST131 (n = 206), ST131-single loci variant (SLV; n = 25), and 28 non-ST131 isola

Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), often called the Asian corn borer, is a complicated pest because of its complex biological features, such as its adult dynamics, host choice, and life span. This complexity has been causing difficulties in both pest forecasting and control for more than 60 years. One likely explanation for this complexity is that O. furnacalis has several varieties that vary based on some specific features. During 2015–2017, postmedial line-based varieties of male O. furnacalis were identified as distinct clades (I, II, and III), which were then compared b
