Abstract:
Mad fylder mere i medierne, men hvordan underholder fx et madprogram på tv? Med afsæt i de 13 afsnit af Claus Meyer-serien Smag på Danmark! undersøger vi, hvordan serien er konstrueret og fortalt. Især ser vi på, hvilken rolle de 13 forskellige steder, som serien foregår på, har. Vi diskuterer begreber som terroir og mytologisering. Serien etablerer dobbeltheder og relationer, og i tråd med dette forlenes sted som terroir både med al og med ingen betydning. Mad knyttes som et tegn, med Barthes in mente, til stedet, men på en måde, der leverer rum for seerens eget forestillingsarbejde. Serien demonstrerer for seerne, hvordan smagsdomme kan foregå med Meyer som seerens stedfortræder i et ferie- og fritidsunivers. Den nydelse, som serien konstant etablerer, demonstrerer og anticiperer, kan seeren deltage i med sit eget fantasiarbejde: Det er god underholdning, fordi så meget er overladt til seernes forestillingsarbejde. Food, Terroir, and Television: Taste Denmark! Food has become more dominant in the media landscape, but how does a food programme on television entertain us? We analyse how the 13 episodes of the Claus Meyer series Smag på Danmark (Taste Denmark!)are constructed and narrated. We pay particular attention to the different locations of the episodes and discuss the terms terroir and mythologization. The series establishes ambiguities and relations, and in this connection the location understood as terroir means everything – and at the same time means nothing at all. With reference to Barthes, the series links food as a sign to location, but in such a way that room is left for the viewer’s own imagination. The series demonstrates to the viewers how judgements of taste can be made in a time of leisure and a universe of holidays, with Meyer acting as the viewer’s proxy. The series is constantly establishing, demonstrating and anticipating a pleasure in which the viewer can participate in his or her own imagination. This makes excellent entertainment because so much is left to be worked through in the viewer’s own imagination.

Abstract:
In the 20th century, the General Drafting Company was one of the “Big Three” American road map makers. When it came to the Company’s Christmas card maps cultural biases overrode their commitment to accuracy and high standards. Starting in 1930, General Drafting produced a series of Christmas card maps that featured Santa Claus. Cultural and regional stereotypes are highlighted in the 1930s maps; the 1950s maps also reveal a prominent American nationalist worldview. Although Santa Claus generally serves as an avatar for the benevolent “Traditional American” who is generous and jolly, the Santa of General Drafting maps portray him differently. Santas are seen harvesting natural resources, hunting animals, and being shown deference by non-Americans while disparaging the Soviet Union. Most disturbingly, Santa is shooting a Native American in the back, and enslaving other Santas in Siberia. The abhorrent behavior is being cloaked by the kindly image of Santa Claus to make his (America’s) actions more palatable. These Christmas card maps are compelling and unique examples that illustrate how accurate cartography can be supplanted by deeply engrained cultural stereotypes and ideologies.

Abstract:
The television series The Good Place (2016–2020), created by Michael Schur revolves around four humans who—after their deaths—end up in what they believe to be heaven: the “Good Place”. In reality, however, they are in a very sophisticated torture place, built and directed by demons from the “Bad Place”. During the four seasons of the series, the four humans discover the true nature of their predicament and try to reach to “real” Good Place, through—among other means—improving their moral attitude, e.g., becoming a better person by taking ethical lessons provided by one of the four, who is an actual professor of moral philosophy. During these lessons, the four discuss many ethical and philosophical notions, ideas and problems, among which is Philippa Foot’s famous 1967 thought experiment known as the Trolley Problem. The series as a whole, the author of this article argues, revolves around this impossible moral dilemma, suggesting self-sacrifice as an ultimate solution to the Trolley Problem.

The motif of initiation occurs repeatedly in the poetry of Hugo Claus and it can be regarded as an important key to his early work. In the series De ingewijde it is clear that the poems are not simply imitations or embodiments of traditional initiation rituals or ceremonies. In the poems there are almost concealed correspondences, and in order to determine their meaning initiation has to be studied as a universal phenomenon. In the first place one has to study what initiation means as a universal phenomenon, and then initiation in Hugo Claus’s poetry is studied.

Abstract:
Compared to the Claus process, selective H2S catalytic oxidation to sulfur is a promising reaction, as it is not subject to thermodynamic limitations and could theoretically achieve ~100% H2S conversion to sulfur. In this study, we investigated the effects of Co and Fe co-doping in ABO3 perovskite on H2S selective catalytic oxidation. A series of LaFexCo1−xO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) perovskites were synthesized by the sol-gel method. Compared to LaFeO3 and LaCoO3, co-doped LaFexCo1−xO3 significantly improved the H2S conversion and sulfur selectivity at a lower reaction temperature. Nearly 100% sulfur yield was achieved on LaFe0.4Co0.6O3 under 220 °C with exceptional catalyst stability (above 95% sulfur yield after 77 h). The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, FTIR, XPS, and H2-TPR. The characterization results showed that the structure of LaFexCo1−xO3 changed from the rhombic phase of LaCoO3 to the cubic phase of LaFeO3 with Fe substitution. Doping with appropriate iron (x = 0.4) facilitates the reduction of Co ions in the catalyst, thereby promoting the H2S selective oxidation. This study demonstrates a promising approach for low-temperature H2S combustion with ~100% sulfur yield.

Abstract:
The aim of the research – this article discusses findings from the experiments on the synthesis of catalysts in the protective layer and improvement of the technology for preparing catalysts using available raw materials. Evaluation of their efficiency in the processes of removing sulfur, oxygen and elemental mercury compounds from gas streams. For the synthesis of a catalyst of the protective layer, aluminum hydroxide of the pseudoboehmite modification was used, which had been obtained by processing of the wastes from the Shurtan gas-chemical complex manufacture – an alumina adsorbent after its use in the process of purifying a polyethylene solution. As a result of a series of comparative analyzes, it was found that the catalysts of the protective layer synthesized using pseudoboehmite obtained by processing of alumina waste completely satisfy the strength criterion, possess a set of physicochemical properties required for dehumidification of gas syrup from hydrogen sulfide and other harmful impurities, when the interaction of SO2 and H2 S in the ratio typical for the Mubarek gas processing plant. The most active and selective catalyst in the production of sulfur was exhibited by the Claus process catalyst.

Abstract:
A taxon, traditionally referred to the rank order, encompassing all recent taxa of caecilians and their close fossil relatives, is highly supported as holophyletic in all recent cladistic analyses of Amphibia. Under the Duplostensional Nomenclatural System, among 12 nomina available in the literature, only one, Gymnophiona Rafinesque, 1814, qualifies as a sozodiaphonym and should be used for this amphibian taxon. We show here that the authorship of this nomen, as well as of 32 other nomina published in 1814, is ‘Rafinesque’, not ‘Rafinesque-Schmaltz’. The nomen Apoda Oppel, 1811, that has often been used for this taxon, proves to be a distagmonym and a junior homonym of Apodes Linnaeus, 1758 and five other distagmonyms, and as such it is invalid under DONS. In total, we identified 34 distinct class-series nomina derived from the stems ἄπους (apous) or Apus in 13 distinct zoological groups, only two of which are valid under DONS Criteria: Apodiformia Wetmore, 1947, for the suborder of Aves currently known as Apodi Wetmore, 1947, and Apodomorpha Sibley, Ahlquist & Monroe, 1988 for the order of Aves currently known as Apodiformes Peters, 1940. Several other nomenclatural findings were made in the course of this study: [1] in the Teleostei, the nomina "Eupercaria" and "Syngnatharia", like all the other new nomina proposed in the paper by Betancur-R. et al. (2017) are anoplonyms and cannot be used as valid; [2] in the Mammalia, the nomina Cetus and Cetacea should be credited to Brisson (1759); [3] in the Holothuroidea, the nomen Apoda Claus, 1868, currently considered valid under the apograph Apodida, is invalid and should be replaced by the nomen Paractinopoda Ludwig, 1891; [4] in the Isopoda, the subordinal nomen Cymothoida Wägele, 1989 should be replaced by its senior synonym Darwinida Lakshminarayana & Rama Rao, 1977.

Nesta dissertação trabalhamos com três classes de distribuições de probabilidade, sendo uma já conhecida na literatura, a Classe de Distribuições Generalizadas Beta (Beta-G) e duas outras novas classes introduzidas nesta tese, baseadas na composição das distribuições Pareto e Weibull com a classe de distribuições discretas power series. Fazemos uma revisão geral da classe Beta-G e introduzimos um caso especial, a distribuição beta logística generalizada do tipo IV (BGL(IV)). Introduzimos distribuições relacionadas `a BG L(IV) que tamb´em pertencem `a classe Beta-G, como a beta-beta prime e a beta-F. Introduzimos a classe Pareto power series (PPS), que ´e uma mistura de distribui¸c oes Pareto com pesos definidos pela distribui¸c ao power series, e apresentamos algumas de suas propriedades. Introduzimos a classe Weibull power series (WPS), cujo processo de constru¸c ao ´e similar ao da classe PPS. Apresentamos algumas de suas propriedades e aplica¸c ao a um banco de dados reais. Distribui¸c oes nesta classe t em aplica¸c ao interessante a dados de tempo de vida devido `a variedade de formas da fun¸c ao de risco. Para as classes PPS e WPS, fizemos uma simula ¸c ao para avaliar m´etodos de sele¸c ao de modelo. A distribui¸c ao pareto ´e um caso especial limite da distribui¸c ao PPS, assim como a distribui¸c ao Weibull ´e um caso especial limite da distribui¸c ao WPS.

The estimation and analysis of signals that have polynomial phase and constant or time-varying amplitudes with the addititve noise is considered in this dissertation.Much work has been undertaken on this problem over the last decade or so, and there are a number of estimation schemes available. The fundamental problem when trying to estimate the parameters of these type of signals is the nonlinear characterstics of the signal, which lead to computationally difficulties when applying standard techniques such as maximum likelihood and least squares. When considering only the phase data, we also encounter the well known problem of the unobservability of the true noise phase curve. The methods that are currently most popular involve differencing in phase followed by regression, or nonlinear transformations. Although these methods perform quite well at high signal to noise ratios, their performance worsens at low signal to noise, and there may be significant bias. One of the biggest problems to efficient estimation of these models is that the majority of methods rely on sequential estimation of the phase coefficients, in that the highest-order parameter is estimated first, its contribution removed via demodulation, and the same procedure applied to estimation of the next parameter and so on. This is clearly an issue in that errors in estimation of high order parameters affect the ability to estimate the lower order parameters correctly. As a result, stastical analysis of the parameters is also difficult. In thie dissertation, we aim to circumvent the issues of bias and sequential estiamtion by considering the issue of full parameter iterative refinement techniques. ie. given a possibly biased initial estimate of the phase coefficients, we aim to create computationally efficient iterative refinement techniques to produce stastically efficient estimators at low signal to noise ratios. Updating will be done in a multivariable manner to remove inaccuracies and biases due to sequential procedures. Stastical analysis and extensive simulations attest to the performance of the schemes that are presented, which include likelihood, least squares and bayesian estimation schemes. Other results of importance to the full estimatin problem, namely when there is error in the time variable, the amplitude is not constant, and when the model order is not known, are also condsidered.

Abstract:
zoo is an R package providing an S3 class with methods for indexed totally ordered observations, such as irregular time series. Its key design goals are independence of a particular index/time/date class and consistency with base R and the "ts" class for regular time series. This paper describes how these are achieved within zoo and provides several illustrations of the available methods for "zoo" objects which include plotting, merging and binding, several mathematical operations, extracting and replacing data and index, coercion and NA handling. A subclass "zooreg" embeds regular time series into the "zoo" framework and thus bridges the gap between regular and irregular time series classes in R.

Let K be a real quadratic number field. Let p be a prime which is inert in K. We denote the completion of K at the place p by Kp. Let ƒ > 1 be a positive integer coprime to p. In this thesis we give a p-adic construction of special elements u(r, ??) ∈ Kxp for special pairs (r, ??) ∈ (ℤ/ƒℤ)x x Hp where Hp = ℙ¹(ℂp) ℙ¹(ℚp) is the so called p-adic upper half plane. These pairs (r, ??) can be thought of as an analogue of classical Heegner points on modular curves. The special elements u(r, ??) are conjectured to be global p-units in the narrow ray class field of K of conductor ƒ. The construction of these elements that we propose is a generalization of a previous construction obtained in [DD06]. The method consists in doing p-adic integration of certain ℤ-valued measures on ??=ℤpxℤp pℤpxpℤp . The construction of those measures relies on the existence of a family of Eisenstein series (twisted by additive characters) of varying weight. Their moments are used to define those measures. We also construct p-adic zeta functions for which we prove an analogue of the so called Kronecker's limit formula. More precisely we relate the first derivative at s = 0 of a certain p-adic zeta function with -logₚ NKp/Qp u(r, ??). Finally we also provide some evidence both theoretical and numerical for the algebraicity of u(r, ??). Namely we relate a certain norm of our p-adic invariant with Gauss sums of the cyclotomic field Q (zetaf, zetap). The norm here is taken via a conjectural Shimura reciprocity law. We also have included some numerical examples at the end of section 18.

Abstract:
Classification problems with multiple classes and imbalanced sample sizes present a new challenge than the binary classification problems. Methods have been proposed to handle imbalanced learning, however most of them are specifically designed for binary classification problems. Multi-class imbalance imposes additional challenges when applied to time series classification problems, such as weather classification. In this thesis, we introduce, apply and evaluate a new algorithm for handling multi-class imbalanced problems involving time series data. Our proposed algorithm is designed to handle both multi-class imbalance and time series classification problems and is inspired by the Imbalanced Fuzzy-Rough Ordered Weighted Average Nearest Neighbor Classification algorithm. The feasibility of our proposed algorithm is studied through an empirical evaluation performed on a telecom use-case at Ericsson, Sweden where data from commercial microwave links is used for weather classification. Our proposed algorithm is compared to the currently used model at Ericsson which is a one-dimensional convolutional neural network, as well as three other deep learning models. The empirical evaluation indicates that the performance of our proposed algorithm for weather classification is comparable to that of the current solution. Our proposed algorithm and the current solution are the two best performing models of the study.

Abstract:
The problem of estimating latent or unobserved states of a dynamical system from observed data is studied in this thesis. Approximate filtering methods for discrete time series for a class of nonlinear systems are considered, which, in turn, require sampling from a partially specified discrete distribution. A new algorithm is proposed to sample from partially specified discrete distribution, where the specification is in terms of the first few moments of the distribution. This algorithm generates deterministic sigma points and corresponding probability weights, which match exactly a specified mean vector, a specified covariance matrix, the average of specified marginal skewness and the average of specified marginal kurtosis. Both the deterministic particles and the probability weights are given in closed form and no numerical optimization is required. This algorithm is then used in approximate Bayesian filtering for generation of particles and the associated probability weights which propagate higher order moment information about latent states. This method is extended to generate random sigma points (or particles) and corresponding probability weights that match the same moments. The algorithm is also shown to be useful in scenario generation for financial optimization. For a variety of important distributions, the proposed moment-matching algorithm for generating particles is shown to lead to approximation which is very close to maximum entropy approximation. In a separate, but related contribution to the field of nonlinear state estimation, a closed-form linear minimum variance filter is derived for the systems with stochastic parameter uncertainties. The expressions for eigenvalues of the perturbed filter are derived for comparison with eigenvalues of the unperturbed Kalman filter. Moment-matching approximation is proposed for the nonlinear systems with multiplicative stochastic noise.

Cette thèse analyse la "révolution associative" en Serbie, le boom des ong locales depuis la dissolution de la yougoslavie. Loin des vues normatives qui célèbrent les ONG comme incarnations démocratiques, il faut expliquer ce phénomène à travers ses liens dialectiques avec l'industrie de l'aide, l'économie politique mondiale et les projets néolibéraux de restructuration étatique. J'analyse tout d'abord ce que la démocratisation fait en pratique, les épistémologies du changement social qu'elle produit, la manière dont elle essentialise l'Histoire et suggère des techniques de soi comme forme d'intervention sociale. J'examine ensuite les politiques culturelles autour du cadre dominant "démocrates contre nationalistes" à travers le prisme analytique de classe: en exposant le cosmopolitisme pratique que les ONG de salon déploient comme stratégie de légitimation pour se consolider, et en analysant les "nationalstes" à travers des expériences de dépossessions symboliques et matérielles, je montre aussi que faire des "projets" déradicalise la production du savoir et l'action politique, en même temps qu'il produit un nouveau précariat. Enfin, je discute le conflit assumé entre ONG et état via la réforme de l'état providence. Je soutiens que les hiérarchies de pouvoir se situent plutôt entre une élite technocratique d'experts, circulant entre ONG-donateurs-état et les ONG et institutions publiques qui fournissent des services, stigmatisées à cause de leur "résistance" aux réformes. This thesis sets out to unpack the ‘‘associational revolution’’ in Serbia, the boom of local NGOs since the violent Yugoslav dissolution. Far from normative views, celebrating NGOs as democratic incarnations, we have to explain this phenomenon within its dialectical constitution with global systems of political economy, aid, and current neoliberal state restructuring. First, I analyze what democratization actually does, what kind of epistemologies of change it produces, how it collides to local political constellations, how it ‘pathologizes’ history and suggests technologies of the self as a form of social intervention. Second, I examine the politics of culture behind the dominant framework “Democrats vs. Nationalists” through the analytical prism of class: by depicting the ‘‘practical cosmopolitanism’’ that the salon NGOs deploy as a legitimizing strategy for consolidating power; and by analyzing the ‘‘nationalists’’ through class-based experiences of material and symbolic dispossessions. Third, I look at the art of NGOing; how project-making deradicalizes knowledge and political action; what labor patterns it produces through the formation of a local precariat. Finally, I discuss the overstated NGO-State clash through the welfare reform (outsourcing policy/provision). I argue that power hierarchies are instead to be drawn between a technocratic élite of experts, circulating among NGOs-donors-state, and nonprofit and public institutions in service provision, stigmatized for their “resistance”. Aid, I conclude, not only creates the conditions for its own institutional reproduction, but critically partakes to the social reproduction of unequally structured global systems

AbstractThere are perhaps few terms that are used so frequently in the study of migration yet have as little definitional clarity as ‘governance’. This is perhaps not surprising, for, as the political scientist Claus Offe (2009) has observed, governance might best be understood as an ‘empty signifier’. What he meant by this was that governance acquires meaning through the ideas, processes, and practices that become associated with it rather than through a prior independent meaning that it possesses. For example, if migration governance is described as ‘multilevel’, as it often is, then this tells us that it occurs in lots of different places across ‘levels’ (local, national, international), whilst the actual meaning of governance remains unclear. This is a useful observation to take forward for the analysis that follows.

The Government of Vanuatu is undertaking significant primary education reforms, including major curriculum changes, to improve equitable access to and the quality of education. Since 2016, a new primary education curriculum has been introduced by stages, accompanied by a suite of in-service teacher training. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support new pedagogies focused on student-centred learning and community support, language transition and class-based assessment practices. These reforms are being supported by the Australian Government, through its Vanuatu Education Support Program (VESP). The Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has commissioned a study to investigate how the VESP is making a difference to the Government of Vanuatu’s ongoing primary education reforms. This research is part of a multi-year study series undertaken by DFAT's Education Analytics Service to investigate teacher and learning development initiatives in three countries: Lao PDR, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. The purpose of this summary is to provide a brief overview of findings and recommendations from the first year (2019) of the Vanuatu study.

In this paper we aim to disentangle how sectoral economic growth affects the growth of the middle class size using state-level data of Bolivia from 2000 to 2017, a country with limited data, breaking the three main economic activities into subsectors aiming for more specific results. By means of a Bayesian hierarchical longitudinal model for small samples, we find that the commerce and services sectors have the biggest impact, even though mining and agriculture also have a positive effect on the increase of the middle class in Bolivia. Our results also suggest that both formality and public social investment have a significant, yet smaller, effect.

Abstract. The article reveals the experience of organizing blended learning for geography students using Google Classroom, and discloses its potential uses in the study of geography. For the last three years, the authors have tested such in-class and distance courses as “Cartography and Basics of Topography”, “Population Geography”, “Information Systems and Technologies in Tourism Industry”, “Regional Economic and Social World Geography (Europe and the CIS)”, “Regional Economic and Social World Geography (Africa, Latin America, Asia, Anglo-America, Australia and Oceania)”, “Socio-Economic Cartography”. The advantages of using the specified interactive tool during the study of geographical disciplines are highlighted out in the article. As it has been established, the organization of the learning process using Google Classroom ensures the unity of in-class and out-of-class learning; it is designed to realize effective interaction of the subjects learning in real time; to monitor the quality of training and control the students’ learning achievements in class as well as out of it, etc. The article outlines the disadvantages that should be taken into account when organizing blended learning using Google Classroom, including the occasional predominance of students’ external motivation in education and their low level of readiness for work in the classroom; insufficient level of material and technical support in some classrooms; need for out-of-class pedagogical support; lack of guidance on the content aspect of Google Classroom pages, etc. Through the test series conducted during 2016-2017, an increase in the number of geography students with a sufficient level of academic achievements and a decrease of those with a low level of it was revealed.
