Jacobi, Lauren, and Daniel Zolli, eds. Contamination and Purity in Early Modern Art and Architecture. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462988699.

Full text
Abstract:
The concepts of purity and contamination preoccupied early modern Europeans fundamentally, structuring virtually every aspect of their lives, not least how they created and experienced works of art and the built environment. In an era that saw a great number of objects and people in motion, the meteoric rise of new artistic and building technologies, and religious upheaval exert new pressures on art and its institutions, anxieties about the pure and the contaminated – distinctions between the clean and unclean, sameness and difference, self and other, organization and its absence – took on heightened importance. In this series of geographically and methodologically wide-ranging essays, thirteen leading historians of art and architecture grapple with the complex ways that early modern actors negotiated these concerns, covering topics as diverse as Michelangelo’s unfinished sculptures, Venetian plague hospitals, Spanish-Muslim tapestries, and emergency currency. The resulting volume offers surprising new insights into the period and into the modern disciplinary routines of art and architectural history.

Lepak, David P., and Scott A. Snell. Employment Subsystems and the ‘HR Architecture’. Edited by Peter Boxall, John Purcell, and Patrick M. Wright. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199547029.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an interesting tension that exists within the HRM literature with regard to employment subsystems. On the one hand, a clear pattern is emerging in strategic HRM research that suggests that HR systems geared toward increased commitment and employee involvement can have a dramatic impact on organizational outcomes. Terms such as commitment-oriented HR systems, high-performance work systems, high-involvement HRM, and the like exude a connotation of extensive investment in, and reliance on, employees. This article first reviews the ‘HR architecture’ to provide a backdrop for our discussion of employment subsystems and changing forms of employment. Second, it examines the implications of globalization, strategy, and managing knowledge flows for how companies structure their portfolio of employment subsystems. Throughout the discussion it offers suggestions for future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Close observation of various attachment systems in animal skins has revealed various exquisite multi-scale architectures for essential functions such as locomotion, crawling, mating, and protection from predators. Some of these adhesion systems of geckos and beetles have unique structural features (e.g. high-aspect ratio, tilted angle, and hierarchical nanostructure), resulting in mechanical interlocking mediated by van der Waals forces or liquid secretion (capillary force). In this chapter, we present an overview of recent advances in bio-inspired, artificial dry adhesives, and biomimetics in the context of nanofabrication and material properties. In addition, relevant bio-inspired structural materials, devices (clean transportation device, interlocker, biomedical skin patch, and flexible strain-gauge sensor) and microrobots are briefly introduced, which would shed light on future smart, directional, and reversible adhesion systems.

Mandarin Theater’s opening in 1924 was remarkable for it was the first Chinese theater built after the 1906 earthquake and fire. This chapter provides a detailed look at the first three years of the Mandarin Theater’s music, performers, and productions as it evolved from a small, struggling theater into a significant cultural institution. In particular, from the elaborate architectural details, to fundraising activity, and to the city tax paid by the Mandarin Theater during the first ten months of the theater, it was clear that the theater was extremely ambitious.

Abstract:
This article briefly describes East Asian shipbuilding technology, as well as maritime history, based on the archaeological remains of vessels. The era of China's maritime expansion ran from the tenth to the fourteenth century. China was heavily influenced by the outside creating a rich and diverse maritime tradition. The archaeological remains of boats combined with textual and iconographic data, provide a clear picture of the development of the earliest forms of naval architecture in China. Various shapes and construction techniques can be seen on these vessels. This article gives an overview through the era, beginning from before maritime expansion, to the era of maritime expansion during the Song and Yuan dynasties, to the decline of shipping, during the Ming dynasty. Many aspects of maritime traditions in China require further research.

Martins, Ana Maria, and Adriana Cardoso, eds. Word Order Change. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747307.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a collection of thirteen detailed studies on word order change within the framework of diachronic generative syntax. An initial chapter contextualizes them and introduces the theme in order to make clear from the onset its relevance and appeal. The sample of languages investigated is diverse and displays significant historical depth. Different branches of the Indo-European family are represented both through classical and living languages, namely: a wide range of Early Indo-European languages (Sanskrit, Greek, Indic, Avestan, Hittite, Tocharian, among others), Romance languages (Latin, Italian, European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese), Germanic languages (Dutch, English), and a Celtic language (Irish). Besides, three chapters are dedicated to Hungarian and one chapter deals with Coptic Egyptian. The essays in the book use the tools provided by the generative theory of grammar to investigate the constrained ways in which older linguistic variants give rise to new ones in the course of time, with the aim of contributing insights into the properties of natural language. Two ingredients of the generative framework make it especially appropriate to deal with word order phenomena, namely movement as a syntactic operation (embedded in the theory of grammar) and a richly articulated clausal architecture composed with lexical but also abstract functional categories. This collective volume is unique in the way it provides through in-depth language-internal or comparative studies new perspectives on the relation between word order change and syntactic movement, under the constraints imposed by particular instantiations of clausal architecture.

Arnold, Paul. Genetics of OCD. Edited by Christopher Pittenger. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190228163.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often runs in families and has been shown to have significant heritability. It is genetically complex, and two decades of genetic work have not converged on a clear understanding of genetic risk factors. However, accelerating progress in recent years has begun to generate some insights into the genetic architecture of the disorder, and greater clarity is likely to emerge in the coming decade. This chapter summarizes several lines of genetic work, including genome-wide genetic and linkage studies; candidate gene studies; and investigations of gene-environment interactions and of pharmacogenetics. One developing theme is that genetic variance in components of the brain’s glutamate signaling system may contribute to the development of OCD. Advancing understanding of the genetics of OCD may lead to new insights into pathobiology and to new tools to optimize individual treatment.

Allende, Marcos. LACChain Framework for Permissioned Public Blockchain Networks: From Blockchain Technology to Blockchain Networks. Edited by Alejandro Pardo and Marcelo Da Silva. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003747.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade, different blockchain technologies have contributed to the creation of thousands of blockchain networks which have hosted thousands of proofs of concepts and pilots, with generally satisfactory results for stakeholders. However, scalability has been a big roadblock for most of these projects. We believe that the reasons why most blockchain-based solutions do not scale well are that they are built on ledgers that are not properly designed as the instrumental piece of architecture needed by these projects and that it is not clear who is liable for what. There is rarely an upfront discussion about governance, data management and privacy, technical support, operational fees (e.g., tx fees), maintenance, regulatory risks, or sustainability in these decentralized networks. This framework is a set of recommendations that enables the creation of multipurpose network of networks that are robust, reliable, sustainable, compliant, scalable, and have clear definition of accountabilities. The framework can also be applied to both permissionless public and permissioned private blockchain networks, but can only be fully realized in a permissioned public infrastructure. The framework builds on the idea that in order to develop scalable blockchain projects and solutions, it is necessary to switch the conversation from blockchain technologies to blockchain networks.

Abstract:
With the passage of CoP21, the world is leaving a relatively inactive stage and entering a second stage characterized by broad-based efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A third stage of reductions will almost certainly be required. This should chart a feasible path to a stabilized climate and put in place the necessary policy architecture for following that path, marking a global tipping point where effective climate change mitigation is no longer a goal but an accepted fact, with broad implications for behaviour and decision-making, not least a massive reduction in the resources allocated to prospecting for new fossil fuel reserves. A clear proximate operational challenge for achieving this tipping point involves effective implementation of country Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) with attendant information needs. Looking further ahead, four key research frontiers are presented, focused on achieving this tipping point and entering the third stage of emissions reductions.

Abstract:
Public astonishment at the explicit elimination of the University Church and other historic structures on Karl Marx Square in architectural drafts at the 1960 city planning exhibition stimulated a massive letter-writing campaign. Rhetoric from the regime about soliciting public opinion gave way to paranoia behind closed doors; insisting that all opposition came from a few malcontents, authorities repressed the clear prevailing opinion. Fear of this opinion made the regime pretend that its demolition plans were not imminent, even though extensive classified documentation proves that the University Church’s fate was sealed. 1960 thus represented not just the first outright plan to destroy the church, but also the final honest attempt by the regime to measure opinion before the eve of the 1989 revolution. Henceforth, the official communist ideal of a public forum was a farce put forth in propaganda articles and tracts that claimed glowing popular endorsement for socialist modernity.

Abstract:
This book has its origin in the research I did for my PhD studies in architecture, at that time it was not easy for me to look for the publication of the work, I was more interested in finishing my studies and continue with my life. Time and chance led me to publish part of that thesis in my first book, however that publication did not cover all the work done so far, so that’s what’s decided by the editors, leaving out the part of the analysis of the machines and taking only the explanations of hydraulic engineering, mestizo processes and treaties and their analysis, the book published in 2010, two years after obtaining the PhD, represented my debut feature Hydraulic Engineering in Mexico sixteenth century and despite the happiness that caused me that first publication had the feeling that there was something that I still need to do. Besides, I never found a clear explanation as to why only half of the thesis had been published, perhaps the number of pages, or the choice of a topic evaluated as being of greater interest, that question had been going around in my head for some time. Why had hydraulic machines been left out?

Abstract:
Chapter 4 focuses upon the institutional framework that Gordon Brown and his chief economic advisor, Ed Balls, put in place to make the Treasury the pilot agency of New Labour’s political economy. Insofar as the newly established Department for International Development (DFID) was concerned, this would ensure that it was the Chancellor, rather than the Secretary of State for International Development who would design New Labour’s international development policy. Yet the role that the Treasury played in ‘internationalising’ New Labour’s domestic political economy went beyond the conquest of other Whitehall departments. Brown took the macroeconomic blueprint – the ‘new economic architecture’ – that he had mapped out at home, to a number of key international financial actors abroad. This blueprint would create, in Brown’s mind, ‘a new Jerusalem’, a biblical phrase that the Chancellor used to describe the vision that he had of a world free from poverty, debt and disease. Embedding this vision into the orthodoxy of the ‘post-Washington Consensus’, Brown wanted to maintain not only a clear transmission of policy but also a distinct institutional ‘lock-in’, and a set of global governance arrangements that would provide the framework for the policies explored in the following three case study chapters.

Abstract:
Alleviating the tension between security and freedom is a fundamental challenge for a free and democratic constitutional state. How difficult it is to strike a balance between these concepts became particularly clear during the period of terrorism instigated by the German militant group ‘The Red Army Fraction’ in the 1970s. Forty years later the question of the right way of achieving such a balance is no less relevant. However, in view of our increasingly technological and globalised society, the legal questions which have emerged from this conflict require new responses. The documentation from the ‘JuWissDay 2017’ conference confronts this task. It collates articles regarding the need for reform of Europe’s security architecture, the obligation of the German Federal Intelligence Service to respect fundamental rights, the obligation of transparency in risk prevention law, the function of migration law in counterterrorism as well as reflections on the concept of an ‘anticipated state of emergency’ in legislation. Abstract:
War captivity is an ideal observatory to address three interrelated questions. First, I argue that in order to understand what a prisoner of war was in the eighteenth century, from a legal viewpoint, we must forget what we know about this notion, as it has been shaped by twentieth-century international conventions. In the eighteenth century, the distinction between a prisoner of war, a hostage, a criminal and a slave was not always clear-cut, in theory and even more so in practice. Second, war captivity tells us something important about the eighteenth-century state, how it transformed itself, and why it endured. The third approach is a social history of international relations. The aim here is to understand how eighteenth-century societies were impacted by war: how the detention of foreign enemies on home soil revealed and challenged social values, representations, hierarchies, and practices. The book’s argument hinges on the experience of prisoners of war as the pivot of social relations within and outside the prison, between Britons and French and between prisoners and host communities. War does not simply destroy society, but it also creates new sorts of social ties. The book addresses a wide range of topics, such as the ethics of war, philanthropy, forced migrations, the sociology of the prison and the architecture of detention places. One of its strengths is the sheer magnitude and diversity of the archival material used, in English and in French, most of which have been little explored by other historians.
