A sizeable group of theoretically grounded studies has defined clear speech production for neurotypical talkers as well as the perceptual consequences of neurotypical clear speech. Although less robust in size compared to the neurotypical literature, clear speech research focused on the clinical population of dysarthria has grown substantially over the last decade. The growth stems, in part, from the positive effects of clear speech on intelligibility, a perceptual construct central to the clinical management of dysarthria. When faced with communication challenges talker often modify their way of speaking producing clear speech. In a production study we investigated how American English talkers adapt medial flaps (e.g., petal and pedal are pronounced as [ˈpɛɾəl]) following miscommunications with a computer partner. When subjects said a word (e.g., petal) the computer either interpreted the word correctly or incorrectly (it guesses pedal, kettle or ???). Talkers produced longer words, vowels, and stop closure in response to an incorrect versus correct guess. Talkers also changed their flapped productions to stops

Clear speech is a speaking style that has been shown to improve intelligibility in adverse listening conditions, for various listener and talker populations. Clear-speech phonetic enhancements include a slowed speech rate, expanded vowel space, and expanded pitch range. Although clear-speech phonetic enhancements have been demonstrated across a variety of talkers, only a subset of these changes may be required for listeners to benefit perceptually from clear speech. AbstractBefore diving into Ricœur’s historical and conceptual experiences of free speech about Algeria, Nanterre and USA in Chaps. 4, 5 and 6, I provide in this chapter a clear working definition of ‘free speech’ as a negotiated process and explore how, by using the Communities of Inquiry approach, young people can learn the art of discussion as they progress through university. As an antidote to the chilling effects of the culture wars, this develops a politics of pedagogy that entails mutual recognition of each other’s arguments and helps us to share the risk with each other of causing offence. There are significant differences between this approach and the communicational ethicsof Habermas. This chapter and Chaps. 4 and 6 end with sample Communities of Inquiry.

Abstract:
Whereas prototypical conceptions of translation and interpreting as two separate and distinct entities are still being upheld in different contexts, the professional reality shows a less clear-cut picture, where the boundaries between translation, interpreting and accessibility are increasingly blurring. A case in point is Speech-To-Text Interpreting (STTI), which allows the production of written access to live events or programmes for people with and without hearing loss. This paper introduces STTI for readers who may not be familiar with it and addresses the quality of its final product and its recognition at the European Union and the ISO normalisation committees. The article ends on a personal note dedicated to Franz Pöchhacker, whose work is fundamental to support STTI as a new form of communication that can help bring down barriers.
